Paul Ryan to Obama: You realize your bill is a fiscal disaster, right?

posted at 5:50 pm on February 25, 2010 by Allahpundit

Via the Standard, this was the most buzzed-about moment among righties on Twitter this afternoon, and with good reason. Now that you’ve laughed at the freak-show stuff, settle in for six minutes of Ryan wonking out about what’s destined to happen to the “cost curve” and our annual deficits if The One’s leviathan bill passes. This has always been a core problem of Obama’s health-care pitch: He knows that the moral argument for the bill — sure, it’ll cost us dearly but it’s worth it to insure the uninsured — is a political loser so he resorts to preposterous assertions about how our giant new federal entitlement will actually save us money in the long run. It’s win-win, you see. (Kaus dubbed this nonsense “Orszagism” after The One’s budget chief.) I think I’ve said before that it reminds me of the left’s arguments about enhanced interrogation. They won’t acknowledge that intel could be lost if detainees aren’t pressured because the public will blanch at that trade-off. So voila: Simply insist that enhanced interrogation never, ever, ever works and the circle is squared. Win-win again. There are no trade-offs in Candyland.

So unpersuasive is his argument that a clear majority of 53 percent says America can’t afford to take these vital “cost-saving” measures right now. (The same poll puts Obama’s health-care approval rating at 35/55.) Viva Orszagism.

I thought it was especially interesting when Ryan said he questioned the “reality of (CBO) score”. Really? As member of the Budget Comm.? If we dont trust CBO who do we trust?

TruUSA on February 25, 2010 at 6:02 PM

I trust the CBO’s numbers up until 1 day after a spending/tax/budget bill passes. AFter that their numbers go out the door.

THe CBO has to use projected (guesses)static numbers for GDP, tax rates, tax revenue, etc to “cost” out a bill like this. If ANYTHING changes slightly, their cost estimate is gone. And that ‘anything’ can include raises in interest rates, inflation, recession, unexpected (heh) numbers participating thus raising the cost. (cough) illegals (cough)

canopfor on February 25, 2010 at 6:31 PM

I have impossible standards, I admit, but I think the GOP missed a huge opportunity to frame this debate within a larger context of freedom and ideology. The debate was almost exclusively couched in financial/fiscal terms. The republicans looked like brilliant and articulate number-crunchers and risk assessors, but not so much as inspiring tribunes of individual freedom. They simply didn’t use the opportunity to expose young Americans weaned on liberal catechisms of “compassion” to the fallacy of Statist benefaction (the myth of “compassion”) represented in this malignant bill, but also to inspiring notions of individual sovereignty and empowerment as outlined in their own proposal. What woud be the first impulse of Ronald Reagan at such an event, when directly confronted by the architects of such a massive government takeover of individual life? To argue cost? I don’t think so. What if Obama’s healthcare cost nothing, or was fiscally neutral? Would we then be conceding the issue? I get the feeling sometimes that we would.

I think in fact that our expectations of the GOP have so fallen that we’re thrilled that they were able to show up without their pants falling off, and indeed were able to mount an impressive factual presentation. But what of the moral presentation? What is it they stand for beyond budgetary responsibility?

terryannonline on February 25, 2010 at 6:27 PM

Kohl’s Senate seat is up for re-election in 2012, and there was some talk about drafting Ryan for the governor’s race this fall. But that race has drawn a good candidate from Milwaukee (Scott Walker), plus Ryan’s economic talents are much better suited to the House than the Senate.

He’s in the perfect spot if the GOP can retake the House this fall, which is why I think he’ll stay there and get plucked as the VP by whomever wins the primary in 2012.

BadgerHawk on February 25, 2010 at 6:34 PM

The problem is two fold:

1. The MSM will find some way to make the republicans look racist or evil.
2. A good part of the electorate, at least 52% that voted for obama, will not understand a word that Paul Ryan, Eric Cantor, or even John Mccain, *shudder*, said today. All they will come away with is what the MSM tells them. All three are white men that are racist against the historic leader.
It is too bad our society has become one of hand out, not hand up.

Seven Percent Solution on February 25, 2010 at 6:42 PM

For me, the disconnect with reality that Obama displays is astonishing.
He comes into office effectively saying “give me a trillion dollars or the country gets whacked”. Then goes around saying he saved the country from the “Great Depression II”. Next he wants to pass the biggest, most fiscally irresponsible entitlement ever.
So in order, he claims to haved saved the country from financial ruin, then he sets about finishing the job of bankrupting us.
His priorities are all discombobulated and based solely on ideology, rather than reality.
If he really thinks he’s such a hot shot, why doesn’t he prioritize sanely, like start with fixing Social Security, then fix Medicare, then balance the budget, THEN talk about universal health care!
If he does the first three he gets re-elected in a landslide. Then he can do universal health care in his second term. Then they’d put his face on Mount Rushmore lol!

Agree with the first point, disagree with the second point. An important part of the 52% that voted for Obama – the indies – have been bailing on him for about a year now, since Porkulus passed. They gave him a chance, and then proceeded to split in large numbers. If they were smart enough to start the exodus, they’ll be smart enough to see what went on today and make up their own minds.

I submit that a narcissist like him is incapable of performing in any other manner. He sucks in all the spiritual energy like a black hole, giving nothing.

If he does not get sufficient spiritual energy, he feels like he’s being suffocated rather than suffering. It’s literally a life-threatening situation for him to be deprived of your life force to which he deems himself so richly entitled.

I get where you coming from by wanting the Republicans to speak more about freedom and liberty. However, I think sticking to the financial costs has it’s benefits too. If we make the liberty and freedom arguments they will might tout their moral arguments (which I think is their strongest argument….although I don’t agree with him). If they take insult to me addressing them by their first name, I point out that they best show me the same respect they demand from me. If I was Rep. Ryan, I would have called Obama Barack just to see his head explode.

Six minutes rapid fire of coherent, clearly enunciated, on-topic and rational expression.

Very good.

At 5:24, the famous Pres Obama middle finger…what a child.

sbugzmom on February 25, 2010 at 6:38 PM

Ah…looks like his index finger to me….

BigWyo on February 25, 2010 at 6:46 PM

I stand by my middle finger observation…only his ring finger and pinky are bent. The extended finger is the middle.

The Hornet stings. That’s why I try not to provoke her.

If the GOP elites were capable of surprise attack with a lethal weapon and they weren’t as afraid of Sarah as the Dems, they would have brought her in, unbeknownst to anyone, to bring the house down. berri would have given her the finger and run away crying as Sarah hit a Reagenesque home run on how obamascare would steal our freedom, violated the Constitution and will ration care and still be based on death panels.

Talk about living rent free in their heads – when Sarah finished with them they wouldn’t have heads left.

Oh, I completely agree: Taking down the bill on its financial/economic points is great, it definitely has to be done. What I should have said is that, once those points are made, move directly up the ladder, into issues of liberty and freedom. there are soooooo many reasons this bill is bad, and I think the GOP has a golden opportunity not just to kill this bill once and for all, but to use it to frame itself as advocates of something more closely resembling the founding fathers’ original vision for the country.

That sounded overly grand, especially for the folks in charge of the GOP right now, their solid performance today notwithstanding.

Point is: *Anything* closer to the founding fathers’ original vision is better than this turd of a bill/party/vision the Dems have.

greggriffith on February 25, 2010 at 7:58 PM

Maybe Obama isn’t even aware quite yet of how deep in the hole he really is.

Maybe that awakening is yet to come.

Nonetheless, he was so in the hole with this, I honestly felt bad for him.

He couldn’t even conduct himself as a moderator.

He just doesn’t have it in him.

AnninCA on February 25, 2010 at 7:11 PM

I feel a whole lot sorrier for us and our country then I ever will for Obama. Obama, Pelosi and Reid drove me out of the Democratic Party. I don’t feel the least bit sorry for him or any other a**hat who voted for him.

What possible reason is there that a man that can talk that coherently off the cuff is not mentioned as a contender when Scott Brown and Sarah Palin are?

thphilli on February 25, 2010 at 6:24 PM

That’s as silly as anointing Palin only on the basis of her RNC speech, or anointing Brown just because he won a Senate seat.

Great job by Rep. Ryan, but “Whoever 2012!!!!!” gets a little tiresome after Whoever has had a good day.

ddrintn on February 25, 2010 at 8:00 PM

Paul Ryan is my new hero. Bravo, sir!

Mutnodjmet on February 25, 2010 at 8:01 PM

It’s ridiculous that Obama by himself talked more than all of the other Democrats, and the Republicans got less time than either Obama or the Democrats.

Obama 119 minutes
Democrats 114 minutes
Republicans 110

Did anyone else find it incredibly stupid looking that the POTUS had a name card in front of him? As if he couldn’t be identified in a room full of US Congressman and the viewing audience might not know who he is either? Or does he love seeing his name so much that he didn’t realize how foolish and childlike he looked?

btw, if he did flip off Rep. Ryan, that should be added to the utube videos that compile his other flips – there are three or four now and all of them conveniently occur when he is mentioning the name of a rival – in this case his rival is speaking to him. This stuff needs to go viral – Get on the stick Beck, Hannity and O’Reilly. (Not holding my breath)

tigerlily on February 25, 2010 at 8:02 PM

Addressing his opponents by their first names, knowing they would be compelled to refer to him with a respectful title, “Mr. President,” was a cheap trick by Obama to try to make himself look better. He’s the adult, “Mr.”, and everyone else is a child, not deserving of a title. Cheap and transparent. I guess that’s the transparency Obama’s been promising us. I would have loved it if one of the Republicans had replied, “Well, Barry . . .”

Well, that sure didn’t work out for O, now did it.LOL

Fighton03 on February 25, 2010 at 6:36 PM

I dunno maybe it is more of a promotional disaster than true war.

Something along the lines of WKRP’s “As God is my witness, I thought turkey’s could fly.”

Lily on February 25, 2010 at 8:03 PM

OMGosh! Bravo and a big AMEN to Paul Ryan.

It sounds as if he has actually read the bill and knows what is in it. Even though I normally turn off the set when BHO is speaking, I would have loved to have heard him mutter, stumble and fumble his way through his debate of Ryans numbers.

DuctTapeMyBrain on February 25, 2010 at 8:05 PM

… and the Dems could not stop him, nor the media. The word got out. That look on Obowma’s face;

“The truth hurts!”
