Open thread: Obama health-care summit; Update: Video link added

posted at 9:30 am on February 25, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

This health-care summit is already off to a great start. The White House leaked a scaled-down proposal just days after unveiling a formal proposal so vague that the CBO couldn’t score it. Meanwhile, Nancy Pelosi will kick things off at the summit by laying out her approach to any hint of a new direction for ObamaCare. In her opening statement, Pelosi will specifically reject what she calls “incrementalism,” demanding instead the kind of sweeping reform that has made ObamaCare political poison for Democrats living outside of San Francisco:

Traveling around the country, we’ve all heard stories about people unable to pay their medical bills. I’ve even seen a grown man cry – a senior citizen from Michigan, whose wife had been sick for 16 years. He didn’t know how he’d pay the medical bills. He was too proud to ask his children for help – they had financial challenges of their own. He worried he might lose his house because of the cost of care. All he could ask was: how can I tell my children?

His story and others illustrate why reform is so critical and why inaction and incrementalism are simply unacceptable.

Both “inaction and incrementalism” are unacceptable? They’re not the same thing, as even some of her Democratic allies have begun to realize. A sweeping reform in the wrong direction would be much worse than incrementalism that could later be reversed without doing extensive damage to the system — and it would be worse even than doing nothing at all.

What do you think the outcome will be? Take the poll:

a capella on February 25, 2010 at 9:44 AM

I doubt I’m even going to watch. It’ll be an endless parade of healthcare sob-stories from Democrats, because that’s pretty much all they’ve got in their arsenal. I’ll probably wait for the highlights instead.

There’s only two choices for Democrats on Obamacare anyway… ram it through and suffer the political bloodbath it causes in November, or drop it. Republicans will never support the “individual mandate” and without it, the insurance companies walk.

The best Obama can hope for in order to get a ‘win’, is to somehow finagle his name to the top of a Republican bill, or to settle for a bill that’s so innocuous no one could possibly object to it.

I checked with Spock. There is an approximately 87.3257641% chance that this will go exactly as expected, (absolutely nowhere) and approximately a 0.7853469% chance that the Republicans will pull a victory out of their hat, with the remaining 12% being that Spo- Obama, I’m sorry – will pull off a big win.

After two years of worrying everyday about Obama, I will make sure to enjoy watching him twist in the wind today. His allies are deserting him, and his political advisors mistakenly allowed him to take all the blame. No cabinet members were fired, and they stupidly allowed Obama to double and triple-down. With some luck, we can be witness today to his political end. I am hoping they read his political obituaries on the Sunday shows.

I don’t see how fining a citizen for not purchasing a commercial product can possibly pass Constitutional muster.

Can we start with tort reform and malpractice payout caps? Those drive doctors to practice defensive medicine and order a bazillion tests. And malpractice insurance premiums drive up costs. Seems to me that’s the low-hanging rotten fruit. Except of course, the John Edwards of the land have gotten rich off it.

The “Prime” Insurance Destination in the Midwest
Torchmark Insurance Group

In a city that’s world famous for its steaks, there’s also another aspect Omaha is “prime” for—the insurance industry. Just ask some of Omaha’s newest companies, which include a number of Fortune 500 companies that have re-domiciled to the state of Nebraska and opened Omaha operations. The reason for these re-domiciles is due, in part, to Nebraska’s low state premium tax and a strong Midwest work ethic.

In 2008, Torchmark Insurance Group re-domiciled two of its major subsidiaries to Nebraska and opened operations in Greater Omaha. This re-domestication is the seventh in recent years–including Pacific Life, AFLAC, West Coast Life, Fidelity National Title Group, Inc. and Arch Insurance Group. Following AFLAC’s decision, CEO Dan Amos stated, “We conducted a nationwide evaluation, and taking a number of factors into consideration, most notably premium tax rate and favorable business climate, and found Nebraska to be the best fit for AFLAC.”

Greater Omaha has an outstanding insurance workforce including claims experts, underwriters and legacy systems personnel necessary to operate a 21st century insurance company. It has proven to be a flexible, efficient environment for new insurance ideas, including an evolving regulatory structure and a proactive approach to integrating information technology into complex insurance industry challenges.

Since 2004, Greater Omaha has added more than 30 new or expanded insurance companies that have invested over $140 million in the Omaha area. These companies have helped Omaha have a financial services’ employment increase of more than 6.5 percent during the last four years.

And then, there are industry giants Mutual of Omaha and Berkshire Hathaway (including its numerous Omaha-based affiliates). Under the leadership of Dan Neary, chairman and CEO, Mutual of Omaha has reinvigorated their business, with the high-profile mixed-use development, Midtown Crossing at Turner Park, near their Midtown headquarters.

Berkshire Hathaway is most famous around the world for its CEO Warren Buffett. And to many Omahans, Berkshire Hathaway’s embodiment is Borsheim’s or Nebraska Furniture Mart. But many people are unaware of the company’s significant insurance presence in Greater Omaha including National Indemnity, Berkshire Homestate Companies and Central States Indemnity Co. of Omaha.

Another of the area’s largest employers, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska, continues to be a health insurance thought leader. A customer-first, wellness-focused company, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska has also been named one of the 2008 and 2009 Best Places to Work in Omaha.

Other health insurance-related companies have also greatly increased their Omaha operations base including PayFlex Systems, Perot Systems and Prime Therapeutics. These companies have been attracted to the strong workforce and good transportation options associated with living in the center of the country and operating in an environment with an accessible, connected airport.

In addition, Zurich North America and AAA have recently added significant property and casualty operations in west Omaha due in large part to the ability to find top-quality insurance people in the region. As AAA President and CEO Charles H. Podowski stated following their decision to expand in Omaha, “It was the passion, support and information that was provided to us by the people in Nebraska that made the difference.”

Woodmen of the World and Physicians Mutual® continue to thrive in this 21st century insurance evolution. In addition, long-standing institutions have become new growth leaders, such as Guarantee Mutual’s group operations now owned by Lincoln Financial Group, which has approximately 1,000 Omaha employees.

Doughboy on February 25, 2010 at 9:35 AM

This worries me too. I fear that the GOP hasn’t taken enough of the right people. McCain? He’s a terrible speaker.

That said, this is six hours of unscripted Obama. I’m convinced that he doesn’t grasp healthcare, economic, free markets issues at all. He just knows whiny, liberal talking points. I see the possibility for moments similar to Joe the Plumber and some of those stupid comments he’s made of doctors in the past. Obama really doesn’t understand the issues. I won’t bet on it, but I really do think he may open himself up to some “emperor has no clothes” moments.
