Obamateurism of the Day
posted at 8:05 am on February 25, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
I know every new President wants to put his own stamp on the US government, but the Washington Times, Berman Post, and WeaselZippers suggests that Barack Obama may be taking that a little too literally. The Missile Defense Agency has unveiled a new logo this year, replacing their existing one:

This is the new one:

If that looks familiar, it should — because it appears to be based at least in part on Barack Obama’s campaign logo:

The irony here is that while the Obama administration clumsily attempts to politicize the MDA through logo homages, Obama has busily cut funds to the agency’s appropriations and spent most of the primary campaign pledging to kill missile-defense systems altogether. Obama felt there were better use of federal money. Apparently, though, copycat logo design was one of them.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Cult of Personality.

Lenin, Stalin, Mussolini, Hitler, Mao (one of Dear Liar’s Anita Dunn’s favorite philosophers), Castro, Pol Pot. What a great group of guys.

Jackie did a better job, especially with the

loudmouth883 on February 25, 2010 at 8:12 AM
Uh, maybe I am just seeing things that are not really there, but part of that new logo looks very much like the Islamic crescent moon and star.
Anyone else see that as well?

There are days when I tremble over this administration… sometimes it is anger, sometimes it is fear. I prefer it on the days when it is caused by great laughter.

One for our geeks (like me): New logo is about as aesthetic as the first Star Trek movie. The filmmakers got it right in the sequel; will the MDA?

Why, yes I did!
Maybe it’s a hint to muslims that we won’t shoot down any of their missles.

This is narcissistic arrogance beyond belief. It is a combination of Obama’s messianic campaign emblem, a Pepsi commercial celebrating him, and a very Islamic symbol.

Instead of a missile launched from earth, hitting something in space, the new logo looks like something launched from somewhere on the world, hitting somewhere else on the world.
A Tea Party, perhaps?

If he doesn’t do it before he’s gonna really break down mentally when he loses in 2012. I don’t think at this point he fathoms that he could lose. Or, then again with him already rolling out the campaign plans maybe he does realize he’s gonna lose so he’s stamping everything with himself he can before it’s too late.

The real question: Why does any government agency need a logo to begin with?
TXUS on February 25, 2010 at 8:24 AM
If some conservative blog had cobbled up the Obama logo and a crescent moon, I bethcha they would be called racist.
Another thing odd about the new logo is that it omits the actual interceptor missile.

Its all about the O. In fact, since he gutted the funding for missile defense, I heard they will soon rename it the Obama Defense Agency.

If this logo had been unveiled under a Republican, it would be called aggressive and racist. It clearly symbolizes an unprovoked Zionist-Christianist attack on Muslim civilians. I mean, look at that big red swoosh slamming into the mirhab with a white-hot explosion.

Since he’s vaporized any chances of memorializing his mug on Mt. Rushmore, the POTUS has now resorted to memorializing himself through petulant logo shenanigans.
How utterly ironic though. The agency charged with shooting down threats to our country now bears the logo of the biggest threat to our country.

I also see the crescent imagery, but maybe I’m just a xenophobe.
What’s the over/under on when huge pictures of the Dear Reader (not mine, but it fits) go up on govt. buildings and public squares? 2011 or 2013 (assuming he wins)?
cs89 on February 25, 2010 at 8:43 AM
There’s some great digital comedy out there for folks with Adobe Illustrator or other design programs to take other federal government agency logos and give them the same Obama touch (and no, you can’t redesign the Great Seal of the United States of America. That’s already been taken).
jon1979 on February 25, 2010 at 8:45 AM
Style over substance. Remember the female CEO at Pepsi redesigning their logo to make it look more like Obama’s?
The Islamic stylization is extremely creepy.
kingsjester on February 25, 2010 at 8:46 AM
I doubt Obama was directly involved in the design.
But his sycophants were. And they presented him with this. And he said yes. I’m sure he was delighted.
keebs on February 25, 2010 at 8:47 AM
How much is it going to cost to replace the logo everywhere – on the agency building, on stationary, in literature…was there any reason to change it other than making it more Obama-y? I think not. Changing the logo is not needed, and it’s yet another wasteful expenditure by government. Our tax dollars at work!
CarolinaGirl6 on February 25, 2010 at 8:47 AM
The new military will make them shaped like phallic symbols.
And vertical smiles all around.
Cybergeezer on February 25, 2010 at 8:47 AM

pain train on February 25, 2010 at 8:50 AM
Before being permitted to use it (new logo), the symbolism should be explained to all Americans. It obviously has meaning to the designer and that should be articulated to those it impacts—us! I’m reading all kinds of things into this new logo…”Lucy, you got some ‘splaining to do!”
texabama on February 25, 2010 at 8:51 AM
Soon, I expect Obama to be wearing a phony military uniform of some sort. Something inspired by Napoleonic cavalry parade uniforms, except with extra plumes and loaded with big fake medals.

Logos, messages, NEA grants, music, raps, art, graffiti, columns, talking points—these guys are all over the place–text messages to college kids, it’s everywhere.
During the campaign they put out this commercial linked right here regarding taking a day off. It’s full of symbolism and encouraging people to subjugate themselves to the message of Obama. Slick advertising and obviously, no substance, as their track record shows.
ted c on February 25, 2010 at 8:52 AM
That is my guess also. Something is just not right about the whole thing. I can’t see why he has spent literally millions trying to keep it hidden, unless there is something on it he doesn’t want to see the light of day.

According to The Grapevine, this new design was picked three years ago. It also says that Pepsi took heat for appearing to coopt Mr. Obama’s campaign logo. Which is weird because I thought Pepsi’s logo came first and as ardent supports of The Won they turned a blind eye to the similarity. Maybe my memory is going.

Anyway, I am not buying the three year time line and I hope one day to research the Pepsi logo.

ohiobabe on February 25, 2010 at 9:01 AM
Interesting. It would make sense that something like changing a logo would take years when a government agency is involved.
Quotes like this make me wonder though;
Why is it ridiculous? It looks a lot like it. Why not say, “well yes they do look similar, and I can understand the comparisons, but here is what happened…”
Dismiss is as ridiculous? No, if you were asked about it, adress question, FFS. It could very well be a coincidence, but then there would be files somewhere on logo options, the process involved in selecting one, etc…
I don’t know, I’m just sick of the “That’s ridiculous, move along now” excuses for things.
reaganaut on February 25, 2010 at 9:01 AM
I don’t know that it looks all that much like the Obama logo, except for the red/white/and blue which is fairly meaningless. To me, Obama’s logo looks like Pepsi meets Mao’s rising sun. But I do agree it’s a waste of taxpayer dollars from the guy who just said no to missile defense.
Meanwhile, some have pointed out that this new logo also resembles the Iranian space agency’s logo.

Point taken about B not wanting to destroy the country. This past weekend I noticed and enjoyed the absence of Blagojevich highway signs (or Ryan signs for that matter) as we drove south to Indiana. It was part of his job to improve the highways or to see that it was done by IDOT. I shouldn’t have to feel like I need to fall to my knees and thank him or any governor for smoothing out the Hillside Strangler or filling some potholes or looking at all the smog created by cars stopped at tollways and using new technology to reduce that. They signed up for the job. As someone in the Army I knew used to say, “sorry you signed the dotted line.”

MSGTAS on February 25, 2010 at 9:24 AM
Read it closely. Either this is a very poorly constructed sentence, or the spokesman is being very careful to tell the truth while giving the impression he wants to:
Richard Lehner, spokesman for the Missile Defense Agency, dismisses the comparison as ridiculous, saying the new logo is for recruiting and the public Web site was developed almost three years ago, has no link to any political campaign, and is cheaper to reproduce on paper.
cs89 on February 25, 2010 at 9:31 AM
You are wrong, Ted. I’ve done a Democrat-style (as in “fake”) geological study of Mt. Rushmore and determined that the image of Teddy Roosevelt could be recut to closely resemble Ob+ama. That change would be the least offensive to most Americans, John McCain excepted. Of course the ears will have to be omitted. There’s not enough mountain for that.
