Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on February 25, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

I know every new President wants to put his own stamp on the US government, but the Washington Times, Berman Post, and WeaselZippers suggests that Barack Obama may be taking that a little too literally. The Missile Defense Agency has unveiled a new logo this year, replacing their existing one:

This is the new one:

If that looks familiar, it should — because it appears to be based at least in part on Barack Obama’s campaign logo:

The irony here is that while the Obama administration clumsily attempts to politicize the MDA through logo homages, Obama has busily cut funds to the agency’s appropriations and spent most of the primary campaign pledging to kill missile-defense systems altogether.  Obama felt there were better use of federal money.  Apparently, though, copycat logo design was one of them.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Nice work!
This ain’t about US or OUR COUNTRY.
It’s all about Barry!
What a disgrace, taking a national defense agency and trying to Barry it!

Tom_OC on February 25, 2010 at 10:40 AM

At least they left off the union mark.

unclesmrgol on February 25, 2010 at 10:43 AM

What a contemptible tool.

daesleeper on February 25, 2010 at 10:50 AM

Maybe they should have replaced the star burst with an acorn.

King Obama! I’m tellin ya!

capejasmine on February 25, 2010 at 10:54 AM

At least now when America is destroyed in a nuclear attack because our defense budget has been used for Andy Stern’s paycheck, we’ll be able to look right at the logo to remember who was to blame.

RachDubya on February 25, 2010 at 11:00 AM

At least it doesn’t look like the Nazi symbol, like his health care logo did…

Dumbest President in history.

I thought the same thing. Transplanted Wisconsinite here aalmost 13 years. But DOT-I or DOH-I or IDOH could be just as bad.

When this is all said and done, we will find out that this guy is barely smart enough to tie his shoes.

And I’m going to shove every one of my liberal acquaintances noses in it.

It looks more like a modification of the Turkish flag.

Question: Does that logo become a unit patch? or pin to put on the Class A uniform?

journeyintothewhirlwind on February 25, 2010 at 11:40 AM

As Drudge points out, it actually looks like the Obama logo smiting the Islamic crescent and star symbol. Which is kind of cool, you have to admit.

And only last week I was moaning about about the decline in quality of Obama’s fo pas, that there hadn’t been anything on par with his student address in some time, and lo, here were are, with this… thing…

This is just awesome, in its completely impenetrable what were they thinking.

Please also notice the Crescent with a star…

Yishai on February 25, 2010 at 1:29 PM

I bleeb that islamic crescent with the star is an attempt to reach out to the muslim world.
Might as well reach out to a running wood chipper.

I’d like to know how much was paid to whom to produce that novel logo??

Beautiful!

DSchoen on February 25, 2010 at 3:12 PM

Am I the only one who sees a Muslim crescent shape in this new design (just like the one at the 9/11 Pennsylvania memorial site)?

NahnCee on February 25, 2010 at 3:44 PM

Really Ed, are you just beyond embarrassment at this point?

Richard Lehner, a spokesman for the Missile Defense Agency, dismissed the comparison entirely.

“It’s ridiculous,” Lehner told Fox News. “It isn’t a new logo to replace the official logo. It’s a logo developed for recruiting materials and for our public Web site. Also, it was used prior to the 2008 election and it has no link to any political campaign.”

More? Okay:

Turns out, however, the “new” logo is not so new. “This was a logo that was developed three years ago for our recruiting materials and our public Web site,” MDA spokesman Rick Lehner told our colleague Ed O’Keefe. “It did not replace our official MDA logo, and of course it has no ties to any political campaign. It was done one year before the 2008 elections. So the whole thing is pretty ridiculous.” Lehner said the insignia was chosen because it was “cheaper, because it’s three colors as opposed to the five colors on the official logo.” WaPo
