New McCain ad: J.D. Hayworth, Birther

posted at 2:28 pm on February 24, 2010 by Allahpundit

I figured his spokesmen would keep hammering the Birther thing, but a full-blown ad replete with cameo by Orly Taitz? Quoth Ron Burgundy: “Boy, that escalated quickly. I mean, that really got out of hand fast.”

My feelings about Birtherism are well known and, needless to say, this is an efficient way of marginalizing Hayworth with undecided centrists who might otherwise be weary of decades of maverickiness. (Geraghty was moved this morning to note Hayworth’s willingness to make chitchat with the John Birch Society.) But I hope McCain’s prepared to explain why he’s ready to go bareknuckle on Hayworth by linking him to Taitz when he refused to go bareknuckle on The One by linking him to Rev. Wright. The single biggest knock on his campaign among grassroots righties was that he pulled his punches against Obama after years of “straight talk” about Republicans and conservatives. I guess he figures, a la Romney, he doesn’t have a prayer with grassroots righties anyway and can afford to shrug off their irritation over the double standard, but he’s going to be asked about it. Wonder what the explanation will be.

Exit question per Rush’s critique of Mitt yesterday: Does Bob McDonnell’s endorsement of McCain today mean he’s just committed political suicide too? If Chris Christie ends up backing Maverick, that’ll mean all three Republican heroes of the last few months are in his corner. Some suicide.

John Birch Society… saying the birth certificate is an identity theft issue…

Goodbye, J.D.–should have stopped while you were ahead.

I dislike McCain greatly, and had hoped he’d be gone… but J.D. is not a strong enough challenger.

John McCain will win, but he’s having to pull out all the stops to do it.

And yeah, if he’d been this much of a fighter in 2008, we just might have him as POTUS.

The single biggest knock on his campaign among grassroots righties was that he pulled his punches against Obama after years of “straight talk” about Republicans and conservatives.

I would expand that. The biggest beef is that he put more energy into attack conservatives and other Republicans than he does the true opposition. This, at least, has been the trend since 2000.

But I hope McCain’s prepared to explain why he’s ready to go bareknuckle on Hayworth by linking him to Taitz when he refused to go bareknuckle on The One by linking him to Rev. Wright.

Excellent point. I suspect it was due to the race angle, but still it is absolutely criminal how the McCain campaign let Obama off the hook as far as Wright goes.

Then again, the dude suspended his campaign to work on the unpopular TARP, so savvy campaignin’ was probably asking a bit too much.

This is a great ad.

Many people don’t even know some of what was in that ad, so this may not work as well as McCain expects.

Hayworth isn’t going to win, if the polls are accurate but this is a win for those who want the records revealed.

sharrukin on February 24, 2010 at 2:35 PM

As Rush said last week when Hayworth was attacked by the McCain camp immediately after his announcement, “Funny how the gloves come off for McCain against a Republican in a primary but NOT against Obama in a Presidential election.”

teke184 on February 24, 2010 at 2:35 PM

But Erick Erickson has already given him the Non-Birther Seal of approval.

I get the impression that JD is a “birther” in the same mode I am. I’ve never heard of Obama producing a birth certificate, but I’m not looking for that as a reason to remove him from office. The issue is not totally settled, but he’s president unless someone can actually produce some evidence.

BobAnthony on February 24, 2010 at 2:37 PM

What disgusts me if McCain had personally invested even 1/2 of this intensity exposing Obama’s ties to ACORN, Bill Ayres and Bernandine Dohrn, and to Jeremiah Wright, he might have exposed Obama for the Marxist that he is. And nowhere have I mentioned where he was born. Obama outed himself with the redistribution of income tape on Chicago radio and on bankrupting the coal companies while being interviewed in SF.

I wish someone would ask Mccain the question if he now thinks that Americans have nothing to be scared of Obama with him being POTUS?

13thdistrictvoter on February 24, 2010 at 2:38 PM

I saw the ad earlier, and my thought was how different he is in this campaign, which really spells out the issue that Ferraro accidentally brought up.

Obama was so different because of his race. Everyone was into reading racial interpretations.

The single biggest knock on his campaign among grassroots righties was that he pulled his punches against Obama after years of “straight talk” about Republicans and conservatives.

Sure, but it’s not as though he had an answer for that at the time. He’s always had an easier time attacking people on the Right than on the Left.

Best guess is that he just enjoys the celebrity of it too much. Attack someone for being a Birther, and you get Jon Stewart’s respect. Attack Obama for his associate with Wright, and you lose it.

Is there a more direct correlation I’m missing?

“Birther” is a trigger word that’s supposed to activate emotions that block all rational thought. It’s a term of derision, like “teabagger”, that results in outright rejection.

If birtherism was so ridiculous, then we’d be able to look through the Pres’s records, from his birth to his college transcripts, to his law firm records, to the Annenberg Challenge files, etc.

But it was probably spoken of best here:
http://townhall.com/columnists/NickRizzuto/2010/02/22/blame_the_media_for_the_birther_movement

And the LA Times story on his background is still pretty interesting:
http://articles.latimes.com/2007/mar/15/nation/na-obama15

From his chameleon ability to be all religions, and his status as teacher’s enforcer, it’d be worth looking at… But never mind that man behind the curtain.

Most Americans know that The Precedent lies about nearly everything and find his actions in trying to hide hide past very, very suspicious.

McShame forgets that he had the Senate move to establish his “natural born” status – notice the co-sponsors of this joke of a resolution:

SRES 511 ATS
110th CONGRESS 2d Session S. RES. 511

Recognizing that John Sidney McCain, III, is a natural born citizen.

IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES

April 10, 2008

Mrs. MCCASKILL (for herself, Mr. LEAHY, Mr. OBAMA, Mr. COBURN, Mrs. CLINTON, and Mr. WEBB) submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the Committee on the Judiciary

April 24, 2008

Reported by Mr. LEAHY, without amendment

April 30, 2008

Considered and agreed to

RESOLUTION

Recognizing that John Sidney McCain, III, is a natural born citizen.

Whereas the Constitution of the United States requires that, to be eligible for the Office of the President, a person must be a `natural born Citizen’ of the United States;

Whereas the term `natural born Citizen’, as that term appears in Article II, Section 1, is not defined in the Constitution of the United States;

Whereas there is no evidence of the intention of the Framers or any Congress to limit the constitutional rights of children born to Americans serving in the military nor to prevent those children from serving as their country’s President;

Whereas such limitations would be inconsistent with the purpose and intent of the `natural born Citizen’ clause of the Constitution of the United States, as evidenced by the First Congress’s own statute defining the term `natural born Citizen’;

Whereas the well-being of all citizens of the United States is preserved and enhanced by the men and women who are assigned to serve our country outside of our national borders;

Whereas previous presidential candidates were born outside of the United States of America and were understood to be eligible to be President; and

Whereas John Sidney McCain, III, was born to American citizens on an American military base in the Panama Canal Zone in 1936: Now, therefore, be it

Resolved, That John Sidney McCain, III, is a `natural born Citizen’ under Article II, Section 1, of the Constitution of the United States.

And riffing off this resolution:

Whereas there is overwhelming evidence of the intention of the Framers to limit the Presidency to Americans who have never held any foreign citizenships or foreign allegiances;

I’m curious and I hope you don’t get offended. When you’re unsure of a word’s spelling do you make any attempt to learn the correct spelling? Or do you just try to spell things phonetically?

Thank you.

I’m curious. How does someone get as pedantic as you? Do you need to attend a special class or somethin?

sharrukin on February 24, 2010 at 2:49 PM

Then ……….

GWB was the real problem. He did so little for Republicans as a party that almost any Dem would have beaten the Maverick and the moose-hunter.

After 2012 elections ………

Obama was the real problem. He did so little for Democrats as a party that almost any Republican would have beaten the Messiah and the gaffe-master.

It’s coming. Oh yeah, it is.

As Rush said last week when Hayworth was attacked by the McCain camp immediately after his announcement, “Funny how the gloves come off for McCain against a Republican in a primary but NOT against Obama in a Presidential election.”

teke184 on February 24, 2010 at 2:35 PM

For the sake of precision, McCain was attacking Hayworth for weeks before he announced. I know, I live in AZ and heard the ads naming JD before he even announced he would be announcing. Probably an attempt to intimidate him not to run but there he is.

KittyLowrey on February 24, 2010 at 2:50 PM

I hope McCain’s prepared to explain why he’s ready to go bareknuckle on Hayworth by linking him to Taitz when he refused to go bareknuckle on The One by linking him to Rev. Wright.

Reason One: The brotherhood of the Senate.
Reason Two: The first to criticize The Won and/or Rev.Wright wins first prize in the racist category. Okay for a pundit, death for a politician.

Haven’t read all of the comments so this may have been said:
Too bad he didn’t go after Obama with such vim and vigor.
I’d rather have a “birther” in the Senate than a Marxist in the White House but Juan McCain must not see it that way. Oh well…

thomasaur on February 24, 2010 at 2:50 PM

John McCain is a dick.

I wish Arizona had a Marco Rubio to run McQueed out of office.

jake-the-goose on February 24, 2010 at 2:50 PM

I never blame the corrupt politician. He is what he is, corrupt. I always blame the voters who believe. They are just as corrupt.

This guys has problems outing a Marxist, but no problem blasting a Republican. His wife should not hire him.
