Good news: Super busy president already gaming out reelection campaign
posted at 12:40 pm on February 24, 2010 by Allahpundit
I’m not sure how much outrageously outrageous outrage is truly warranted here — given the realities of modern campaigning, it’s no surprise that the inner circle’s already chatting about 2012 — but the optics of it are so gruesome as to make it irresistible. The team that spent month after month neglecting jobs measures so that they could obsess about ObamaCare nonetheless found time to start working out the details on … their next campaign?
Given how The One’s master strategy has played out in the polls, if you think you’re pissed to read this, imagine how the left feels. They wanted a perpetual campaign and they got it:
President Barack Obama’s top advisers are quietly laying the groundwork for the 2012 reelection campaign, which is likely to be run out of Chicago and
managed by White House deputy chief of staff Jim Messina, according to Democrats familiar with the discussions…David Axelrod, White House senior adviser, may leave the West Wing to rejoin his family in Chicago and reprise his role as Obama’s muse, overseeing the campaign’s tone, themes, messages and advertising, the sources said…
The DNC sees Republican challengers ramping up earlier than ever and has decided to begin defining potential opponents early. Operatives are already assembling research and drafting unflattering narratives to push about the leading possible 2012 candidates…
The themes for Obama’s campaign are not yet chosen, but a top adviser said not to expect a radical surprise: “He knows who he is.”
My humble suggestion for a campaign slogan: “I am who am.” A quickie Google search reveals Bush’s reelection planning was already in full swing 18 months before the election, with Rove conducting “in-depth interviews” with Republican bigwigs about previous campaigns and aides noodling the pitfalls of moving Bush around NYC at the convention without seeming to exploit 9/11. The One’s obviously moving even faster than that — the election’s 32 months away(!) — but (a) it sounds like they’re only in the very earliest stages of talking about it, i.e. who’s onboard, where should the HQ be, and (b) considering how the primary season seems to begin earlier every cycle, there’s some sense in starting earlier themselves. Romney’s already all but declared, and since the field’s wide open, dark horses have an incentive to start visiting Iowa, New Hampshire, etc, as soon as possible. President Spock, quite logically, wants to be as prepared as possible. But he sure doesn’t want people to know about it. Thanks, Politico!
You’ll be pleased to know that all the old favorites are coming back for the sequel, including Anita “My favorite philosopher is Mao” Dunn and, as the story notes, Jim Messina. He was the guy who reassured nervous Democrats after the health-care townhalls last year that the White House would “punch back twice as hard” against critics; tea partiers and alienated independents have been beating the hell out of the left ever since. In today’s piece, an unnamed colleague of Messina’s crows that he’ll be bringing “the bare knuckles” next time. I can’t wait.
Update: An excellent point from the comments that had completely skipped my mind: Didn’t The One tell us just a few weeks ago that he’d rather be a great one-term president than a mediocre two-termer? I guess he’s … planning for mediocrity, then?

They might as well campaign. The more time they spend on that, the less time they spend on “governing.”

Maybe they are going to hire tens of thousands of campaign workers to solve the jobs problem.
OK its sarcasm. But if they could they would.

Well when your in this deep of a hole you need to start early filling it back in. My prediction is Health Care will pass, with the help of Scott Brown, and there are no Republicans or Tea Party people who will be able to beat Obama.

I’ve said all along that no sane candidate would announce/portray that they are running any time soon for this very reason.

I thought this bho said he did not care if he was only a one term pres. I think the 2012 is going to be a blood bath with all the crud this bho and team will try to get on people. acorn the the black panthers will be out in full force. We may have some sort of ‘crisis’ to deal with in 2012 that could stop the elections!

Not to mention that incumbents in the past were pretty sure that they would be re-nominated by their party without a whole lot of effort. I’m not so sure that will be the case for the filthy lying coward in the White House. One year into the job and his accomplishments can fit on a post-it note, he’s below 50% in the polls, and he managed to lose momentum in Congress with an overwhelming majority in both houses.
highhopes on February 24, 2010 at 12:51 PM
When did he actually stop campaigning? His campaign operation has been active since 2008.

PBHO should hit the campaign trail, maybe start shaking hands in the Obamavilles popping up all over the nation.
He could stand on a podium wearing pince-nez glasses and a Homburg hat while extolling the virtues of the new workers programs he intends to create.

Considering the total number of his present accomplishments could very easily be dropped into a thimble and shook around, I’m curious as to what exactly is being based on as to what is to be used for this “groundwork” being layed out…and whether laying it out at the present time will require one pair of tweezers or two.

Here’s his major problem for 2012. Obama will have to defend what he’s been doing for the last four years. I don’t think he’s ever have to do that before.
Pcoop on February 24, 2010 at 1:08 PM
Bad news for Obama: the voters know who he is in 2012. They didn’t in 2008.
Steve Z on February 24, 2010 at 1:09 PM
No, his only competition right now is Jimmy Carter. That would be “historically awful one-term President” for those of you keeping score at home.
Jaibones on February 24, 2010 at 1:10 PM
The best way for any incumbent to campaign for re-election is to do a good enough job in his/her current term to justify anyone voting for them.
Campaigning is essential when applying for the job. After that, it’s the job done that counts.
JetBoy on February 24, 2010 at 1:10 PM
His theme should be the Blame Bush Campaign. That’s what it’ll amount to and there are plenty of people stupid enough to still believe it.

Step 1: Tell congressional Democrats to sabotage their own reelection chances by voting for Obamacare.
Step 2: Organize your own reelection campaign staff and strategies.
Step 3: Tell congressional Democrats to stop looking at your that way.

If his defense, Palin’s been campaigning since last fall, so he’s just trying to play catchup.
The problem is what will the theme of his reelection campaign be. For Clinton it was “building a bridge to the 21st century”(i.e. the economy’s recovered and let’s not veer off course). For Bush it was “the 21st century will be liberty’s century”(i.e. we’re winning the war on terror so let’s not veer off course). With Obama doing poorly in the areas of both domestic and foreign policy, what exactly can he use?
