Good news: Super busy president already gaming out reelection campaign

posted at 12:40 pm on February 24, 2010 by Allahpundit

I’m not sure how much outrageously outrageous outrage is truly warranted here — given the realities of modern campaigning, it’s no surprise that the inner circle’s already chatting about 2012 — but the optics of it are so gruesome as to make it irresistible. The team that spent month after month neglecting jobs measures so that they could obsess about ObamaCare nonetheless found time to start working out the details on … their next campaign?

Given how The One’s master strategy has played out in the polls, if you think you’re pissed to read this, imagine how the left feels. They wanted a perpetual campaign and they got it:

President Barack Obama’s top advisers are quietly laying the groundwork for the 2012 reelection campaign, which is likely to be run out of Chicago and
managed by White House deputy chief of staff Jim Messina, according to Democrats familiar with the discussions…

David Axelrod, White House senior adviser, may leave the West Wing to rejoin his family in Chicago and reprise his role as Obama’s muse, overseeing the campaign’s tone, themes, messages and advertising, the sources said…

The DNC sees Republican challengers ramping up earlier than ever and has decided to begin defining potential opponents early. Operatives are already assembling research and drafting unflattering narratives to push about the leading possible 2012 candidates…

The themes for Obama’s campaign are not yet chosen, but a top adviser said not to expect a radical surprise: “He knows who he is.”

My humble suggestion for a campaign slogan: “I am who am.” A quickie Google search reveals Bush’s reelection planning was already in full swing 18 months before the election, with Rove conducting “in-depth interviews” with Republican bigwigs about previous campaigns and aides noodling the pitfalls of moving Bush around NYC at the convention without seeming to exploit 9/11. The One’s obviously moving even faster than that — the election’s 32 months away(!) — but (a) it sounds like they’re only in the very earliest stages of talking about it, i.e. who’s onboard, where should the HQ be, and (b) considering how the primary season seems to begin earlier every cycle, there’s some sense in starting earlier themselves. Romney’s already all but declared, and since the field’s wide open, dark horses have an incentive to start visiting Iowa, New Hampshire, etc, as soon as possible. President Spock, quite logically, wants to be as prepared as possible. But he sure doesn’t want people to know about it. Thanks, Politico!

You’ll be pleased to know that all the old favorites are coming back for the sequel, including Anita “My favorite philosopher is Mao” Dunn and, as the story notes, Jim Messina. He was the guy who reassured nervous Democrats after the health-care townhalls last year that the White House would “punch back twice as hard” against critics; tea partiers and alienated independents have been beating the hell out of the left ever since. In today’s piece, an unnamed colleague of Messina’s crows that he’ll be bringing “the bare knuckles” next time. I can’t wait.

Update: An excellent point from the comments that had completely skipped my mind: Didn’t The One tell us just a few weeks ago that he’d rather be a great one-term president than a mediocre two-termer? I guess he’s … planning for mediocrity, then?

I did not know about this.
You have succeeded in turning my attention.
This is like Deep Throat stuff-why is no one talking about this?!

Badger40 on February 24, 2010 at 1:55 PM

When does he petition the Vatican for canonization and ultimately, ascension?

NoDonkey on February 24, 2010 at 2:06 PM

Here’s the Obama 2012 Campaign Song.

profitsbeard on February 24, 2010 at 2:11 PM

Anyone else seen the Obama administration’s new logo for the new Missile Defense Agency? It’s up on Drudge. It looks like a cross between Obama’s logo and the Islamist flag. there should be an uproar over this. Bad enough that it looks similar to the Obama logo, add the other and it’s over the top.

Maybe this is what they have been spending all their time on.

Susanboo on February 24, 2010 at 2:11 PM

You’d think with all the Clinton re-treads in his camp, Barry wouldn’t need to be reminded of the always-relevant Clinton-era slogan:
It’s the Economy, Stupid!
All the campaign planning in the world is not going to help this chump. If the economy doesn’t get a whole lot better in a hurry, Barry’s going to be a one-termer . . . whether he plans it that way or not.

AZCoyote on February 24, 2010 at 2:12 PM

Jimmy Messina plays wicked guitar.

John the Libertarian on February 24, 2010 at 12:42 PM

Yeah – “you’re momma don’t dance and your daddy don’t rock and roll” Loggins/Messina

I noticed Messina reunited with Loggins in a concert tour not too long ago.

Now we know where the unspent $500 Billion of the initial STIMULUS bill will be going…

You won’t be able to swing a dead cat in America with out hitting a “Re-Elect Me!” sign.

But the sources said Obama has given every sign of planning to run again and wants the next campaign to resemble the highly successful 2008 effort.

The absolute hubris and audacity. Am I the only one that finds this offensive? Maybe I’m reading into it a bit much. Maybe what they are referring to is the logistics of the ’08 campaign. Anything more than that would be an insult to the intellect of the American public. The entirety of the ’08 campaign was based on a pretense of hope and change. Add to that a rhetorician extraordinaire portraying himself as a pragmatic centrist, a complicit media, a motivated base, and a public hungry for change. That was Obama’s election to lose. Instead, America got a fierce partisan ideologue who subjected the public to the fury of the Chicago political machine. There is NO WAY America will be fooled twice.

ncconservative on February 24, 2010 at 2:15 PM

Makes perfect sense from the Obamunists’ POV. They’re going to need to have their milestones / stage layout figured out now, so they can misuse all their official powers in the intervening three years to ensure a win.

/wondering if the Republicans in the House will have the stones in January to impeach the POSUS.

rayra on February 24, 2010 at 2:17 PM

It’s the Economy, Stupid!

Barry’s slogan will be, “It’s the stupid voters”.

NoDonkey on February 24, 2010 at 2:19 PM

Are the gaming a scenario where Barry loses all 57 states?

NoDonkey on February 24, 2010 at 2:23 PM

This can’t really surprise anyone. He never stopped campaigning in the first place.

Though this should help stroke a little outrage considering all the work he has in front of him. He’s barely out of his first year. He might find it easier to campaign when he’s actually done something.

Esthier on February 24, 2010 at 2:34 PM

When the going gets tough, the tough go shopping! (or campaigning; whichever is less stressful).

Cybergeezer on February 24, 2010 at 2:36 PM

this should help stroke a little outrage considering all the work he has in front of him.

Having him campaign and make speeches might keep him from working on his jackass agenda?

By all means then Barry, campaign away.

NoDonkey on February 24, 2010 at 2:36 PM

Hey! I thought Barry said that he was “working” 24/7 on jobs….jobs….jobs. I didn’t realize that it just meant HIS JOB.

GarandFan on February 24, 2010 at 2:36 PM

“He knows who he is.”

We know who he is: an inexperienced failure.

ya2daup on February 24, 2010 at 2:36 PM

I’d like them to bring in the guy who was canned for authorizing the AF1 New York flyover to helm the whole thing.. It’s been a real mediocre presidency so far, why not really WOW ‘em on round 2?

That guy screams competency, just like Obama. He’d be perfect.

saus on February 24, 2010 at 2:46 PM

2012 The proof awaits … I bet several states want to see that birth certificate and his paperwork on citizenship ….

tarpon on February 24, 2010 at 2:49 PM

That’s quite presumptuous considering how unpopular his policies are and his approval rating. Maybe he’s trying to get campaign donations ramped up before his polls are in the teens.

scalleywag on February 24, 2010 at 2:53 PM

thought Barry said that he was “working” 24/7 on jobs….jobs….jobs

He’s doing an outstanding job, jobbing the American people.

The debate is over, Worst President Evah!

NoDonkey on February 24, 2010 at 2:53 PM

Wait until they realize Hillary started campaigning last year.

JammieWearingFool on February 24, 2010 at 12:46 PM

Exactly.

HRC will bug out of this Administration sometime this year, presumably over a pretextual foreign policy dispute with the Administration.

And there won’t be any hope and change to sell in 2012, at least not by the One.

molonlabe28 on February 24, 2010 at 3:00 PM

Lets see how many new jobs the new jobs bill brings. Ought to be at least a couple million. At least.

scalleywag on February 24, 2010 at 3:00 PM

FOCUSED like a laser beam on creating…or saving…..JOBS!

jukin on February 24, 2010 at 3:13 PM

Good lord, this is news? The man has never stopped campaigning. It’s all he knows how to do. Because he sure as hell can’t govern.

capejasmine on February 24, 2010 at 3:14 PM

Unfortunately for Team Barry, there’s several huge problems facing them in 2012 they didn’t have to deal with in 2008:

1. They can’t fool anybody by trying to run Obama as a moderate centrist.

2. He won’t be able to get votes by reminding everybody incessantly “I’m not George Bush” and “It’s Bush’s fault”

3. He’ll be forced to run on the actual record of the previous 4 years, and if the first year was any indication of the 3 remaining years that are coming, he’s going to have very little he can actually run on.

4. Hopey-Changey rhetoric only works when you are the Rorschach Blot Candidate inviting all people to translate you into whatever they want to see. Obama will have spent 4 years defining himself.

As an aside, everything I have seen about Barack Obama when I first began to pay attention to him in 2007 tells me his ego will not be able to handle it if he continues to drop in the polls and he spends the next 3 years not being able to pass anything progressive once the Democrats lose a big chunk of their majority (or even control of Congress outright) after the midterms this year.

This man truly does not have a bipartisan bone in his body, and neither does the team he’s assembled around him. They attempted to use the economic crisis as a legislative window to quickly ram through a bunch of progressive policies and after almost a year of reading the handwriting on the wall they still refuse to give up on health care or cap and trade.

As 2012 draws near and he’s faced with the prospect of a grueling election campaign he knows he can’t win – while also knowing that even if he pulls off a miracle he’ll be stuck for 4 more years not being able to get the policies he truly wants – he’ll quit.

He’ll pull a Lyndon Johnson.

manofaiki on February 24, 2010 at 3:25 PM

He’ll pull a Lyndon Johnson.

I’ve been saying that for months.

Why toil 20 hours a day, 7 days a week for a measely half million a year, when he can make $100,000 for a one hour speech in Paris, badmouthing America?

NoDonkey on February 24, 2010 at 3:38 PM

Ben Bernanke testified today that he sees unemployment remaining high through 2012.

Say goodnight, Barry. The only thing you’ll need to be planning for 2012 is where to move to. I hear you’re fond of Indonesia and Pakistan . . . .

AZCoyote on February 24, 2010 at 3:46 PM

Maybe DingleBarry can make points on AGW, (Al Gore Warming) as soon as they dig out from the most recent snowstorm.

Today’s dose of Obamanomics success stories:

2009 lending levels was the worst decline in 67 years

Problem banks spiked last year to worst level in 16 years

Mortgages 3 months past due now 5%- worst level ever recorded

January new home sales drop to worst level ever recorded and erase an entire year of gains

Begin the campaign!

Begin the campaign!

Chuck Schick on February 24, 2010 at 3:56 PM

2012 Campaign Slogan: “I’m Due!”.

He can argue that he’s crapped the bed for four straight years, but he’s GOT to have a hot streak soon.

NoDonkey on February 24, 2010 at 4:29 PM

Obama’s 2012 Motto;

1,000,000 ACORN voters can’t be wrong! Vote early. Vote Often!

Star20 on February 24, 2010 at 4:45 PM

Hey, Allah, don’t forget this little nugget from Obama’s SOTU a short month ago

But what frustrates the American people is a Washington where every day is Election Day. We can’t wage a perpetual campaign where the only goal is to see who can get the most embarrassing headlines about the other side -– a belief that if you lose, I win.

NoDonkey on February 24, 2010 at 2:06 PM

Never, his ascension is hitched to the star and cresent moon. Notice the new missle defense logo with his stripes and circle of his presidency with the star and cresent moon of Islam. Hard to imagin that as a accidental goof.

Exercise in futility.
