Video: Donny Deutsch calls Marco Rubio a “coconut”; Update: I didn’t know it was a slur, says Deutsch

posted at 4:32 pm on February 23, 2010 by Allahpundit

Such is my ignorance of this particular slur that I didn’t grasp the outrage when I first watched the clip. I took “coconut” to be some sort of archaic Three-Stooges-esque putdown, like “dimbulb” or “numbskull.” Turns out that the boss emeritus has been dealing with it for decades, just as black conservatives have had to deal with the “Oreo” nonsense. A review of the transcript at Newsbusters makes me think, yeah, that’s exactly how Deutsch intended it:

BEHAR: What’s his name? I don’t know him. Rubio?

DEUTSCH: Marco Rubio. He’s running against Charlie Crist, who I think has done a great job. And he is the new great, you now, hope down there.

BEHAR: So, basically, these people, the tea partiers are basically angry with the right and the left for the same reason, that there’s fiscal irresponsibility?

DEUTSCH: No, they’re angry- they’re basically- their argument is- and I think there’s a lot of racism underneath it- is- “He, they, are taking your civil liberties away. They’re stomping on the Constitution. They’re telling us how many bullets we can have in our guns.”

Rubio should consider himself lucky: Yesterday at The Root, Clarence Thomas got lumped in with Mugabe, Idi Amin, and the D.C. Sniper as black men so monstrously embarrassing to their race that history would have been better off without them. Looking forward to Rubes inevitably ending up on the left’s Cuban version of the same list, along with Batista and … well, anyone but Castro.

If you’re searching for a silver lining here, consider this evidence that Rubio really has arrived as a national figure. You’ll know he’s presidential timber when blackface photoshops of him start showing up on nutroots blogs. Click the image to watch.

Yeah, right, Dandy Douche.
That’s contemporary slang you hear all the time.
I believe the last time it was used was in the Ziegfield Follies of 1912.

so, donny accuses tea party peeps of being racist, then makes a racist remark, then when called out for it, claims ignorance.

We aren’t supposed to believe he is a racist, even after making a racist remark, but he can accuse thousands of americans of being racist with no proof at all….

interesting.

Really?

List of ethnic slurs
Coconut
(New Zealand) A Pacific Islander. Named after the coconut, the nut from the coconut palm.[42]
(UK) A black person who exhibits behavior associated with caucasians; (US) a Hispanic person trying to be ‘white’. [43]
(South Africa) A black person who acts white[44]

No.
Here’s a huge list, don’t know if its all inclusive but there are many I never heard of.

Racial Slur Database
http://www.rsdb.org/

Macaca = Indians, Derived from the word “monkey.” Famously used by Republican U.S. Senator George Allen during his 2006 re-election campaign.

Coconut = Blacks, Blacks, Hispanics, Filipino, Arabs, etc. Mainly used to describe dark-skinned people who are perceived as trying to be “white”…brown on the outside, white on the inside.

I know that Mr. Rubio is not your candidate but why are you ascribing this incident as something he is putting forward. He probably doesn’t even know about it. I am willing to give Mr. Deutsch the benefit of doubt even though the Left has ruined two political careers over things equally weak.

Cindy Munford on February 23, 2010 at 9:15 PM

If his intention truly wasn’t to make a racial remark, then why not choose one of the other myriad words for someone whose intelligence you’re trying to deride? There are tons.

Moron
Numbskill
Idiot
Simpleton
etc.

“Coconut” just seems to be such an obstruse term for a mentally-deficient or simple person to just pull out of the aair as the first word off the top of one’s head.

Didnt you know any critisism of Rubio is raaaaaaaaaaascist.
Squid Shark on February 23, 2010 at 8:30 PM

Really?

Deutsch employed the derogatory term while hitting politicians with no experience.

He noted the success of such candidates and derided, “…You almost need that blank piece of paper. That’s the new model. Like, you know, this coconut Rubio down in Florida.”

Sounds more like strait up “name calling” to me.
He mentioned nothing about “policies” something that could be criticized.

As to politicians with little to no experience, he could have been talking about Obama, do you really think he would refer to Obama as a “Coconut”?

I don’t buy that ‘splainin’ douche guy said. Nuts, whacko, bananas or crazy are more appropriate, but, “coconut?” who says that? Squid Shark on February 23, 2010 at 10:09 PM

As a conservative of hispanic descent, I have had to deal with this slur my entire adult life. In all honesty, it is painful to hear. It is difficult to understand, however, why such outwardly racist and vile language is acceptable so long as the insult is hurled at a conservative.

I don’t buy Deutsch’s explanation. He knew damned well what he was saying and he looks like an even bigger sack of dog excrement by trying to lie his way out of it.

Rubio obviously did something during his tenure that irritated you or that you didn’t approve up and I assume you don’t believe he has seen the error of his ways. That is exactly how most of us feel about Gov. Crist except that the great talk came first, then the disappointing actions. Either way I will support the primary winner.

I used to be called this without understanding what it meant as I’d never heard the term before. I thought it was like that other popular slur that came at others like me, ‘monkeys living in trees’. When I found out what ‘coconut’ meant, I shrugged. No point in changing perfectly good habits of speech and behavior to appeal to the most ignorant lowest common denominator. BadgerHawk on February 23, 2010 at 10:24 PM

The big thing with me is ethics and fiscal responsibility. Rubio is a notorious pork hound he oversaw one of the most corrupted Houses in Florida since Reconstruction, I think more will be revealed with the release of the new House ethics report coming out, but his handpicked sucessor, Ray Sansom resigned ahead of the results. Sansom got in trouble for doign something Rubio himself did, take a high paying part-time job at an institution he funneled state money too.

Furthermore I take general issue with his failure during the budget crisis of 2007. He arguably had more power over the process than anyone and he spent nearly the entire special session arguing about whether we should ban “truck nutz”

Squid Shark on February 23, 2010 at 10:30 PM

It’s pretty obvious that he knew what he was saying, or he would have used a different phrase, or words. Now he’s trying to do damage control. How much more evidence does a liberal need, to see that the left are the true racists here.

Rubio should consider himself lucky: Yesterday at The Root, Clarence Thomas got lumped in with Mugabe, Idi Amin, and the D.C. Sniper as black men so monstrously embarrassing to their race that history would have been better off without them.

So Clarence Thomas is considered monstrous, and embarrassing to his race, and Reverand Wright isn’t? Hmmmmmmm

Interesting. This is illustrative of why I don’t care too much for politicians in general, even when their political views line up fairly well with my own. I value honesty and integrity a great deal (I actually like Feingold despite him being a hardcore lefty), so if what you say is accurate that kind of blows.

Is Crist squeaky clean when it comes to ethics? Most politicians aren’t, and if Rubio’s going to be better as a fiscal conservative than Crist I don’t find the argument that compelling either way. I’m pretty sure Crist will dish out his fair share of pork if voted into office as well, judging by his willingness to suck at the Stimulus Teat and to take federal dollars for just about anything, including a completely unnecessary train system.

Tony737 on February 23, 2010 at 10:42 PM

Is Crist squeaky clean when it comes to ethics?

He has had two instances of actual note in that Arena. One is his support of former RPOF Chair Jim Greer, who is a scumbag.
The other is a questionable buy up of sugarcane land down south from a company that Crist has political ties to. I think this will be cleared ethically but it is not exactly clean looking.

But the issue with Rubio, is that he is a porker and has no real record of responsible fiscal conservatism. In fact, Crist has line itemed some of Rubios pork out of the budget over the years.

Django on February 23, 2010 at 11:42 PM

Wow, I have NEVER heard the term ‘coconut’ as any kind of racial slur at all – like you, just a kind of ‘nitwit’ reference.

Puts a whole new light on that classic and apparently racist song, “I’ve got a lo-ve-ly bunch of coconuts…” Who knew that Danny Kaye, Monty Python, and many others were actual raaaaacists?

Midas on February 23, 2010 at 7:21 PM

That is silly. I do not see where it has been suggested that “coconut” is a racist word by itself and in all contexts. People have just pointed out that the term is used as a pejorative against Latinos who are not seen as Real Latinos. See, being a Real Latino is apparently more than about ethnicity and cultural heritage; it is about having the correct view of the progressive-liberal corporate state. A Latino simply cannot be a Real Latino and stand athwart it, instead of for it. We simply will not earn our brown bona fides by talking about liberty and limited government and whatnot. That is the stuff of “coconuts.”

I do not believe Donny Deutsch’s claim that he did not know that the term was a slur when he used it to describe Marco Rubio. Deutsch was pandering to those who measure ethnic and racial authenticity against political ideology.

Men like Donny Deutsch and women like Senator Ma’am and other affluent white liberals love, love, love minorities (especially as backgrounds for photo-ops!), only so long as we remember our place. As long as we carry their water to the polls – election after election, thus ensuring generations of a dependent underclass – rich white liberals are our greatest advocates. But as soon as we dare to question or oppose their statist schemes that deny our people real opportunity, real prosperity and a real voice, then there is no ethnic or racist slur that they will not hurl at us, while intimating that we have forgotten our place.

And according to Donny Deutsch, the U.S. Senate is no place for a conservative American of Cuban descent. Or as he would say, a “coconut.”

Threshing Flora on February 23, 2010 at 11:45 PM

I’m from flipping nowhere North Dakota and I know that coconut is a racial slur. I’ve never heard it used in the way that DD is trying to claim he used it. His comment makes it even more obvious that he’s full of crap. He would have never used the terms “simple, bananas or goofy” either. The term “coconut” was used very intentionally here without a doubt.

thevastlane on February 23, 2010 at 11:49 PM

I don’t have my copy of “A Practical Guide to Racism” handy, but I can honestly say I have never heard this term. I even checked the thesaurus at dictionary.com and it didn’t seem to return as being synonymous with “simple”.

His choice of words was almost as poor as his excuse.

Before people decide to flame me as being racist for actually owning this book, you should take a serious look at it. It takes an equal shot at white people, black people, hispanics, muslims, gypsies and even extends out to mermen.

CooCoo Ku Klux for Coco Puffs Coconuts

The Race Card on February 24, 2010 at 1:54 AM

As a conservative of hispanic descent, I have had to deal with this slur my entire adult life. In all honesty, it is painful to hear. It is difficult to understand, however, why such outwardly racist and vile language is acceptable so long as the insult is hurled at a conservative.

I don’t buy Deutsch’s explanation. He knew damned well what he was saying and he looks like an even bigger sack of dog excrement by trying to lie his way out of it.

CapitalistPig on February 23, 2010 at 10:11 PM

Your statement edifies my own personal standard of speaking out against any such displays regardless of ethnicity, gender, religion, race and to some degree social-class.

Deutsch is dealing in the ugliest type of bigotry. Maybe people don’t remember, but he gave Ann Coulter absolute grief over her bomb-throwing.

Let’s stipulate that he didn’t mean to make a perfectly suited ethnic slur that actually happens to be an ethnic slur. Based on his abject liberalism and outspoken posturing on other similar episodes, Deutsch should take this opportunity to make his point clear. He should also prostrate himself to some degree on behalf of non-white conservatives and explore this insidious but common form of bigotry.

“I didn’t know I was a bonehead,” says Deutsch.

John the Libertarian on February 24, 2010 at 2:15 AM

I’m sure it’s been said already, but I think it’s worth saying again –

What a Deutschbag.

During the few moments I could bear to listen to this thing on CNBC, he turned me off.

Yes, he inherited his wealth. He also divorced his wife, got his girl friend pregnant, and then broke up with her. Typical rich liberal guy.

chris999 on February 24, 2010 at 3:29 AM

Liberals love to flaunt their control over political debate. Some really are racist, but often they’ll intentionally use racist/sexist language against conservatives just because they can.

Meanwhile, they can take any comment by a conservative and turn it into a scandal. How can they get away with this? Let me explain: Shut Up!!

Joe Biden – “I have three words for Deutsch:

MA CA CA”

Lockstein13 on February 24, 2010 at 5:12 AM

Since folks are offering their own anecdotal evidence – coconut has been around since at least the 70′s, and in SoCal it was applied in high school to Mexicans who hung out with Anglos.

There’s such a thing as a racial slur database?

Oy. What a brave new world and all the creatures in it.

Not.

smellthecoffee on February 24, 2010 at 6:44 AM

As a rule, I don’t call people words I don’t understand(coconut, Macaca), obversely, I don’t become outraged over being called words I don’t understand(niggardly).

Thanks to Donny, we all now know what a Deutsch bag is.

Open The Door on February 24, 2010 at 6:45 AM

So, he thought he was saying “bananas?” Isn’t that a term for Asians who act white? /sarc.

smellthecoffee on February 24, 2010 at 6:46 AM

I said “coconut” meaning simple, goofy, bananas…wasn’t even aware it could be a racially charged word

Yeah … sure.

Remember, make the left live by their own rules.

darwin on February 24, 2010 at 8:03 AM

Let’s just label everybody with food terms. Then, to determine the diversity of an organization, all you have to do is pull out the old food pyramid.

highhopes on February 24, 2010 at 8:14 AM

Look, I’m giving Deutch a pass here. I’m mid-40′s and I’ve *NEVER* heard it used as a racial epithet, and I’ve *USED* it personally to describe people who were being stupid, and I *KNOW* I didn’t use it with racial overtones and have used it against various people of various genders and ethnicities, lol.

As I said earlier, people making a brouhaha about this are off-base, and are a ‘lovely bunch of coconuts’ indeed.

Enough with the faux outrage – isn’t this one of the things we laugh at wacky liberals about?

Midas on February 24, 2010 at 8:24 AM

I know that it is fun to make the left live by their own rules, but when we do so, we reinforce those rules. The left is never going to be “punished” by the media for breaking those rules to the extent that the right is, and when we reinforce these rules (taking offense and making everything racial), we give the P.C. rules credence and it will give power to the next attack against a republican for some innocent comment – which the media will dutifully push.

Monkeytoe on February 24, 2010 at 8:30 AM

Macaca!

Yes I know I’m not the first.

Deal.

Midas on February 24, 2010 at 8:24 AM

As you, I am willing to give Mr. Deutsch a pass and trust that he really is uninformed. But I am not willing to label as “faux outrage” those who are offended, especially if the term has been directed towards them. This is just another thing that the Left gets a pass on.

Cindy Munford on February 24, 2010 at 8:36 AM

Anyone who defends Donny Deutsch is a POS. I mean that in a good way.

SurferDoc on February 24, 2010 at 8:38 AM

re: “update” Donny Deutsch is lying, he is a racist. Why does MSNBC continue to empoly racists like Keith Oblermann, Chris Wallace & now Donny Deutsch? The only conclusion I can draw is that MSNBC is a racist network.
I’ve heard Oreo (black on the outside, white inside) twinkie (yellow — Asian — on the outside, white inside) and apple (red — Native American — on the outside, white inside).

It is the Left that continues to use racist language and view people on the basis of race. And they do it to continue to divide the populace, making it easier to control them.

rbj on February 24, 2010 at 8:39 AM

Oh yeah, I use “coconut” all the time to decribe someone who’s silly or crazy.

“Oh that Obama, he’s just a silly coconut”.

darwin on February 24, 2010 at 8:42 AM

Cindy Munford on February 24, 2010 at 8:36 AM

Really? When in your life have you ever heard anyone using the word “coconut” to describe someone silly or crazy?

I’ve heard nut, fruitcake, fruitloop, bananas … but never coconut.

“Man, when Bob heard the news he went absolutely coconuts!”
