Valerie Jarrett: Maybe we should try talking to tea partiers in simpler terms

posted at 1:49 pm on February 23, 2010 by Allahpundit

In fairness, although the questioner asks specifically about TPers, she seems to think that talking to everyone in simpler terms would be a good idea. Which is a standard lefty dodge. Just as Obama’s supposedly going down the tubes because he hasn’t been aggressive enough in building Great Society II, the ObamaCare meltdown is due not to public antipathy to the bill on the merits but to the failure of our American Pericles to properly explain it the first 8,000 times he talked about it on camera. It’s a teachable moment — everything is — and he simply hasn’t taught yet. No worries, though. He’ll get it through our thick heads one of these days.

As for her point about tea partiers preying on people’s economic anxiety in their own “extreme” way, compare and contrast with what she said about Palin’s mild “hopey changey” joke on Obama supporters a few weeks ago as being not “constructive.” Enjoy a few minutes of constructiveness.

Meh. If it had been Ahnold saying this people would be making all sorts of comments about Ahnold’s idiocy and Austria (and Austrian, but that is something different) and Ahnold’s inability to actually speak English or understand America …

In fact, I think many of us said those sorts of things on the Ahnold thread yesterday.

neurosculptor on February 23, 2010 at 5:59 PM

They probably got that idea from the two books BHO’s been reading for the last year, “US Presidency, for dummies and morons” and “Teach yourself US Presidency in 14 days”.

Narutoboy,

“Well how do reactions like yours and jbh45’s help???”

People have to understand that when they engage in generalizations, such as this one, THEY open the door to other generalizations.

Your sensitivity to the issue may reflect what our Attorney General; Eric Holder means when he calls Americans “cowards” for not wanting to talk about race.

They problem is we DO understand. We don’t need it explained to us in simple terms because it already has been and we understand it sucks.

Someone needs to tell Valerie Jarrett in simpler terms that Obama’s policies suck. They don’t appear to suck, they just suck.

uknowmorethanme on February 23, 2010 at 6:02 PM

I hate to bust anybody’s bubble but it’s “all the rage” to speak gangster. Every preppy is polishing his ganster lingo. It’s quite amusing really in a paradoxical sort of way. As the clothing styles are influenced, so are the speech patterns. I’m not sure that the gangster lingo is a racial slur any longer in those under the age of 20. Pretty soon the NYT will have nothing to imagine.

There’s a crazy kind of irony to this whole deal: liberals often complain that conservatives have the edge over them in reducing complicated ideas to simplified slogans.

Now obviously, it’s possible to go TOO far in that direction, but the general idea is a good one…especially when the average attention span is approaching that of a housefly.

But Valerie didn’t mean it that way – unless I seriously miss my guess.

YOU may understand…those in the tea parties that are politically sophisticated may understand, but you and I both know the vast majority of this country is NOT politically sophisticated. Why cry foul at someone using this fact to grasp at a few straws while they drown in the political storm they’ve created?

ernesto on February 23, 2010 at 6:04 PM

I wish I could be as intelligent as those in the Obama administration. Just look at their record of success over the past year. Brilliant strategists. Bordering on genius.

Stupid me are so jealous.

ernesto on February 23, 2010 at 6:01 PM

Nothing. It’s the simple-mindedness of Jarrett and the Indonesian Imbecile that is grating. To have such idiots try to act condescendingly does tend to annoy far more than either their idiocy or their unfounded and insane smugness.

This is like having the kid who keeps failing every math test trying to talk down to those who actually know the material. It’s pathetic.

I also find it interesting that a group of americans purposfully speaks a slang dialect to differentiate themselves from mainstream america, and, when others not of that group, mimic that purposeful slang, the originators and perpetrators of this differentiating slang pretend insult. Why is not the purposful invention and use of the slang the actual insult?

Just asking

About their education and communication: Valerie, The One and the whole crew have not accomplished anything in their whole lives except to mouth lefty BS. Which is about all those academic programs taught them to do.

All they have is plans to spend the money of a nation in debt up to its ears. And only people who believed in houses for nothing and free gasoline believe a word they say.

The Tea Partiers have them sized up right.

It is a shame that we still have some good minds wasting away at those schools.

You come off really whiny. If you aren’t a racist and you see people as human beings, not as colors, you wouldn’t worry about such nonsense. Boo hoo, “they” have their language and get mad when I mock it. Christ! For one thing, not everybody apart of that particular “group” would fit into that narrow minded generalization. Secondly, every group has a significant amount of people who speak a certain way. For some, that’s based on race. For others, it’s based on what corner of America you were born on. Who cares.

Narutoboy on February 23, 2010 at 6:16 PM

There’s a crazy kind of irony to this whole deal: liberals often complain that conservatives have the edge over them in reducing complicated ideas to simplified slogans.

Dark-Star on February 23, 2010 at 6:03 PM

The most complicated ideas can generally be understood with the simplest of explanations. THe details will logically follow. Relativity theory can be condensed into the idea that in inertial frames the speed of light is constant. Much of the nature of the physical world can be seen in the few Mathematical constants {e, pi, Fiegenbaum’s constant}.

Simplicity of description is usually taken as quasi-evidence of truth (Occam’s Razor). This attitude tends to be correct.

Liberals like to take the other tack, to try and describe simple concepts with the most twisted, contorted, impenetrable explanations … because libs lack logical faculties and like to hide inside Rube Goldberg-type arguments, so no one can figure out (they think) how stupid they are. It is the liberals’ logical briar patch.

neurosculptor on February 23, 2010 at 6:17 PM

Whats wrong with simple language?

ernesto on February 23, 2010 at 6:01 PM

You’re joking with that, right?

Libs always twist around words, changing meanings and definitions. And don’t try telling me you haven’t seen it. And maybe been a part of it.

Like last week: a lib here tried equating accidental bombings with abortion. If a Con, in his eyes, isn’t screaming about the bombings, he/she has no place complaining about abortion.

We have made our points clear. The Left says, by Jarrett, we’re too stupid to grasp her points.

Think about all this, if you dare. Add it all up, if you can or have the nerve.

They don’t even have to have accents – though it makes it easier and funnier. Ahnold doesn’t understand America or American culture. That’s a fact. I don’t see what’s “discriminatory” about stating that. He is an Austrian and was raised with those sensibilities, not American sensibilities. He could have picked up American sensibilities some where along the way, but he hasn’t. He still thinks like an Austrian (a European, more broadly), not an American.

Why emphasize your whiteness when Valerie Jarett talks about needing to talk down to tea partiers? Are tea partiers all white like Keith Olbermann says? No? Then why do so many people start playing the victim and immediately segregate themselves into their little race categories when someone in the Obama administration speaks ill of the tea parties (see how that’s tea parties and not white folks?). It’s like you guys are purposely trying to be useful idiots for the left. Good grief.

Narutoboy on February 23, 2010 at 6:57 PM

If liberals were as right as they claim in their arrogance, why do they always balk when faced with a cool, logical debate?

One reason only: they’re cowards! That’s why the push government to act in their behalf, to take by the point of its gun what they–liberals–are terrified to do with guns in their own hands. Shoot at a lib with a .22, and he’ll drop his M16 and run from you, screaming for police.

She has to explain to the liberal rabble at the Kennedy Center for Big Government that Congress has a role in passing something like the health care takeover. I wonder how many of these “geniuses” who supposedly are the smart ones had to check their memory as to wonder if that is part of the American system of government. “Hope and Change for Dummies” or perhaps more accurately, “Hope and Change is for Dummies”

I think the biggest problem with Obama is that he just doesn’t talk enough. A few of his excellent speeches would certainly bring people around.

Blech. Off topic, but every time I see a picture of Valerie Jarrett, I can’t help but picture the Wayans brothers in that ghastly white-chick makeup

AttilaTheHun on February 23, 2010 at 9:07 PM

If you haven’t been persuasive after 485 ‘excellent’ speeches, you’ve kinda lost the initiative.

Unless you’re saying those 485 speeches just haven’t been enough. In that case, 485 failed speeches also declares you’ve lost the initiative.

Which way do you want to play it?

Let me say this slowly and in plain language so that you understand Ms. Jarrett:

g o s c r a t c h s l u m l o r d.

bbh on February 23, 2010 at 9:19 PM

YOU may understand…those in the tea parties that are politically sophisticated may understand, but you and I both know the vast majority of this country is NOT politically sophisticated. Why cry foul at someone using this fact to grasp at a few straws while they drown in the political storm they’ve created?

ernesto on February 23, 2010 at 6:04 PM

Elitism.
I’ve traveled the country; ordinary people, at work, at churches, in bars, are plenty sophisticated enough to grasp the complexities of modern life, including details of pending legislation.

I cry fowl whenever I catch a whiff of “we understand; you do not.”

Don’t fall into this trap.

I’d like to see a complete list of the errors that he’s seen immediately. It’s either really, really short, or it’s about 2000 pages long.

ontherocks on February 23, 2010 at 9:24 PM

I tried unsuccessfully to comment on Jarrett in the Chj. Sun Times. Let me try on Hot Air.

Valerie Jarrett belongs in jail.

The admirable Rev “Narutoboy” Jackson aint the only one on this site that is clueless. Allah pundit is too.

jbh45 on February 23, 2010 at 8:07 PM

The lady you quoted was clueless, fool. The sarcasm in the post had nothing to do with what I was addressing.

Narutoboy on February 23, 2010 at 9:56 PM

Is there an Analogy here?

Yes, Stupid is as Stupid does.

Kini on February 23, 2010 at 10:02 PM

Valerie who?

….

(I’m serious. Who the f!@# is she?)

Hawkins1701 on February 23, 2010 at 10:12 PM

I think she has confused the tea partiers with the dumb###ed
people that voted these clowns into office, now that’s simple.

I have often wondered why these people still believe the Dems. are their champions, since at least the 60′s they have been lifting these prople from poverty so how come they are still there 40 years later. Clueless

concernedsenior on February 23, 2010 at 10:13 PM
