Boehner: This health-care summit is a total sham but we must attend anyway

posted at 2:29 pm on February 23, 2010 by Allahpundit

Sad but true, my friends, sad but true.

House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) told his colleagues on Tuesday that Republicans plan to attend the president’s high-profile healthcare summit this week in order to “crash the party.”

According to a House GOP leadership aide familiar with the top-ranking Republican’s remarks at the weekly closed-door conference meeting, Boehner appealed to skeptical Republican lawmakers, saying, “We shouldn’t let the White House have a six-hour taxpayer-funded infomercial on ObamaCare. We need to show up. We need to crash the party.”

Following the private hourlong breakfast meeting, Boehner acknowledged to reporters that House Republicans have not officially accepted the president’s invitation.

He called it an “infomercial” in his official statement this morning too and demanded again that the negotiations start from scratch. (Cantor chimed in on GMA by dismissing Obama’s bill as a “non-starter.”) Now that all pretense is gone that this will be anything other than a political passion play, can someone explain to me McConnell’s picks for the GOP’s Senate attendees?

Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., Senate Republican Whip
Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., Senate Republican Conference Chairman
Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, Ranking Member Senate Finance Committee
Sen. Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., Ranking Member Senate Help Committee
Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., HELP Committee
Sen. Tom Coburn, M.D., R-Okla., HELP Committee
Sen. John Barrasso, M.D.,R-Wyo.

Who’s missing? Right, Number 41, whose very presence would remind viewers that our “bipartisan” president is prepared to stamp his feet and go nuclear with reconciliation if Republicans don’t sign off on his gigantic new bill. Granted, he’s the most junior senator in Congress, but who cares? This is nothing but theater so there’s no excuse for not staging it correctly. I get why most of the others are there: Kyl’s number two in the caucus, Alexander’s the head of the conference, McCain’s the former nominee, and Coburn and Barrasso are both doctors. But neither Grassley nor Enzi can be spared for Brown, their legislative influence notwithstanding? For that matter, where’s Olympia Snowe? She’d remind viewers that even the lone Republican who was willing to vote with Democrats on this early on is now prepared to walk away from a monster boondoggle; as such, she’s probably best positioned to make the case publicly against reconciliation, which she showed herself willing to do last night (“a huge mistake, frankly — tactically, strategically and in terms of what is in the best interest of the American people”). And of course, she’d bring a bit of gender balance to the all-white, all-male, all-senior Republican team. Any explanations for why she and Brown are MIA?

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on February 23, 2010 at 2:32 PM

Can’t they have it on some golf link (hopefully somewhere warm) so Boehner can at least enjoy himself?

Mr. Joe on February 23, 2010 at 2:34 PM

McConnell should have sent DeMint or Sessions – at least one hardcore conservative to throw a few sucker punches at Obarfa. Or Lindsay Graham. He’s awful on amnesty and glo-bull worming but can be very combative when he wants to be. And yeah, Scott Brown should be there.

And McCain? What is he gonna do? Re-enact his stellar debate performances? Ugh.

fiatboomer on February 23, 2010 at 2:35 PM

Yeah Snowe should be there. But McCain shouldn’t. He’s crap with numbers and this is all numbers.

can someone explain to me McConnell’s picks for the GOP’s Senate attendees?

Answer:

This is a list of the “real” contenders for the GOP nomination in 2012:

Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., Senate Republican Whip
Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., Senate Republican Conference Chairman
Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, Ranking Member Senate Finance Committee
Sen. Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., Ranking Member Senate Help Committee
Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., HELP Committee
Sen. Tom Coburn, M.D., R-Okla., HELP Committee
Sen. John Barrasso, M.D.,R-Wyo.

BobMbx on February 23, 2010 at 2:35 PM

Sure, you show up. Then ask if Mr. B+ will consider starting together with the GOP to find common ground and write a new bill. When the answer is of course “no”, stand up give him the finger and walk out! OK, maybe leave the finger part out…but it’s OK to refuse to be part of the sham. GROW SOME CAJONES!

search4truth on February 23, 2010 at 2:35 PM

Maybe neither Scott nor Olympia wanted to go.

chris999 on February 23, 2010 at 2:36 PM

Sen. Coburn and Sen. Barasso make sense. Both are doctors and have actual experience with the subject. Grassley is the Finance guy so I guess he makes sense. McCain has name recognition and reputation for not liking earmarks so maybe he helps. Kyl is a hard-core conservative so he should keep them honest. Lamar Alexander and Mike Enzi seem like filler to me.

I’m more interested in the House picks. We need people like Paul Ryan and Eric Cantor who have detailed knowledge to politely pick apart the crud that’s being shoveled. Plus they’re rising stars and we should showcase them.

Jill1066 on February 23, 2010 at 2:37 PM

Grassley and Enzi are the respective ranking members of the two committees involved.

That’s how things are DONE in the Senate. Jeez. Rank hath its privileges. McConnell would know. He’s been there forever, and he’s about as rank as they get.

So shut up.

Control is more than enough. They get control of the middle class by making it dependent on the goverment for health care (as soon as the insurance companies go bust). That will ensure the middle class votes Dem to keep its benefits.

The GOP would be reduced to the current state of the post-Thatcher, CINO Conservatives who just argue that they can run the social welfare state more efficiently, not that they’ll dismantle parts of it.

Priscilla on February 23, 2010 at 2:52 PM

Any explanations for why she and Brown are MIA?

Because the Republicans still don’t know that you don’t bring slingshots to a political gunfight.

Dems – curse them – know they’re in a fight for their lives, and the Republicans insist on some misguided notion that they have to fight on their knees, blindfolded, with one arm behind their backs.

Tip (I think it was him) was right – ‘politics aint beanbag’ – it’s a damned bloodsport, and the Republicans are notoriously inept and continually surprised by it.

They’re going to “lie unchallenged” anyway. Republicans, respecting the Office of the Presidency, will hold to decorum and as a group will not engage in any meaningful and fully warranted “you lie” moments.

They may pose a few good questions, which Obama will promptly give the back of his hand to and spout off some other scripted talking points/lies.

Like the last one, this will be a ‘win’ for Obama, except this is a longer session, and getting much more media play before and surely afterwards.

There’s a way out of that respecting the Office conundrum. I think the office should be respected. It’s important to our constitutional system. I believe Barack Obama can be challenged effectively and ethically and properly by implying that his ideas, or comments, or reaction, or statement, or whatever he does that’s offensive, is disrespectful of the office of the President.

You see, it’s not only the opposition who can disrespect the office, it’s the office holder as well.

ihasurnominashun on February 23, 2010 at 3:25 PM

I know it’s hard for most of us to accept but the Republicans are actually doing the most tactically intelligent thing they can do at this point.

Consider the GOP’s vulnerabilities on the economy—there’s plenty of baggage that allow the Arianna Huffingtons and Tom Friedmans to defer the blame to the previous eight years. If the debate from March till October consisted of Obama’s remedies to previous eight years, they can start pointing at positive outcomes from a NATURAL recovery and claim their keynesian stimuli have worked.

OR the debate could devolve to the wars in Afghanistan, where the GOP would be in an even more awkward position of either opposing a floundering war or supporting a democratic prosecution of an effective one. Neither is appealing.

OR the debate could turn to immigration, where the GOP is again vulnerable after McCain and Graham’s recent flirtations with amnesty.

Considering all that, it’s pretty clear that the last thing the GOP really wants to do until November is to _STOP_ talking about Obamacare. The polls are unanimous in the voters’ dissatisfaction with the Democrats’ misadventure with healthcare reform, and even their own staffers and strategists are urging them to get away from the crime scene post haste.

If the dems go out of their way to keep shifting the debate back towards healthcare, we have every political advantage in accommodating them.

Of course there are risks with the format, and of course there will be risks of the Republicans getting made to look like needy and irrelevant fools. But if Obama insists on believing his own interpretation of the public’s distrust of his healthcare agenda, there is practically zero risk of anything other than even MORE outrage at his antics until November.

It’s always gonna be infuriating hearing the dems talk and pretend that their vision is what’s right, and there’s no reason to doubt that they’d ever stop trying to shove their policies with GOP support. I think it’s pretty smart for the GOP to give them as much rope as they need until fall.

and Coburn and Barrasso are both doctors

So is my Representative. Why only Senators?

They should arrive, demand existing schemes are publicly declared dead and, if not, march out as a group and hold 24/7 loud pressers on the issue.

JIMV on February 23, 2010 at 3:28 PM

If they’re smart, they will have a spreadsheet put together that shows all of the ear marks and pork and garbage for the special interests in play. And highlight them one by one. Ask the dems to explain what these items are, whey they are in the 2709 page bill, and the moment you get a “duh…umm.. I dunno”, turn and say to the American people, “This is why we oppose this bill”. AND. WALK.

Obama: “It won’t add a single dime to the deficit.”

Response: “I respect your office sir, but you personally are an unrepentant and umitigated liar.”

This is the only acceptable and fully appropriate response.

Any explanations for why she and Brown are MIA?

Captain Obvious, any explanation as to why you have to ask such a stupid question?

TexasJew on February 23, 2010 at 3:35 PM

Grassley? Kyl? McCain? Give me a break!

Could Boehner picked any other RINOs? No wonder the GOP is in turmoil.

madmonkphotog on February 23, 2010 at 3:38 PM

If they don’t yell you lie then you’re not crashing the party. Your showing up only serves to say, “remember us?”

Mr. Boehner,

You’re making a big mistake. You do not have to go. Show some spine and say no. Its the right thing to do. You have nothing to gain by attending and much to lose.

If you stand up to Bozo and say you know what? You showed us your utter contempt for the American people yesterday. We are the party of “Hell no!”

We put out our plan last year. Neither you nor Pelosi or Reid would even talk about it. We are done talking.

Thats what you should do.

dogsoldier on February 23, 2010 at 3:40 PM

I know it’s hard for most of us to accept but the Republicans are actually doing the most tactically intelligent thing they can do at this point

Agreed…if they were to boycott this “summit” they would hand the healthcare narrative back to Obama and the MSM.

Regarding Brown, I think that his vote for the jobs bill was to establish his bi-partisan credentials right up front, and putting him in the mix at the summit would be so blatantly symbolic that it would be mocked – and perhaps rightly so – as further evidence that the GOP has nothing to add to the healthcare debate other than resistance.

I would change that slightly to something like “lying like that Sir is disrespectful to your office.”

JiangxiDad on February 23, 2010 at 3:50 PM

Good grief … this is war. Put the warriors in there. The last thing we need is Senatorial civility in a death match.

darwin on February 23, 2010 at 3:52 PM

I want Jim Demint to be there and Scott Brown.

Speaking of Scott Brown: I don’t agree with RomneyCare but I do agree that in the individual states is where any health care reform belongs. If a citizen does not like RomneyCare they can vote to change it, or if they can’t change it they can move to a different state. If the change comes at the federal level you can’t flee.

Any explanations for why she and Brown are MIA?

Probably the funny accents? I dunno.

SouthernGent on February 23, 2010 at 3:58 PM

AGAIN I ASK:

WHERE IS PAUL “FREAKING” RYAN?!?!?!?

These GOP “leaders” are the biggect bunch of putzes and unless they have some secret plan, they are walking into the “Trap of all Traps”

Be the Party of NOOOOOOO – the people want you to be!!!

LordMaximus on February 23, 2010 at 4:00 PM

Invite Palin as an “independent observer”. She can stare at Obama and silently mouth “death panels”.

Can’t have the good Sarah upstaging a bunch of carreer panderers like Mccain. She might call the filthy liar a liar and when his ginormous ears start somkin and twitchin Mccain would jump up and say hey, thats’ uncalled for lets all be civil (or subservient) now!

Apologize to Pinnochio, Sarah, thats’ not respectful.

Er Pinnochio here is a good family man that just wants whats good for our country and Michelle and her kids.

Thanks John, go away, quietly!

We need people like Paul Ryan and Eric Cantor who have detailed knowledge to politely pick apart the crud that’s being shoveled. Plus they’re rising stars and we should showcase them.

Jill1066 on February 23, 2010 at 2:37 PM

They are not “next in line”, so they just need to sit down and shut up.
