Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on February 22, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Look, I get that Barack Obama has a big problem with China when it comes to the Dalai Lama. Last year, while I didn’t agree with Obama’s kowtowing to Beijing by snubbing the Tibetan activist and holy man, I also understood that with China holding so much of our debt and building a bigger blue-water navy, I also didn’t begrudge him the tough choice. Last week, Obama finally received the Dalai Lama, but in an attempt to show some distance to keep China from getting too irritable, the White House pushed him out a side door, along with the garbage, as the New York Post reported (via Red State and the Weekly Standard):

The Dalai Lama may have visited the White House, but he didn’t go out the front door.

The spiritual leader, who visited Washington this week, had a rather undignified departure from the White House, exiting from a side door — walking past big piles of bagged garbage — on Thursday after he had a sit-down with President Obama.

The Dalai Lama’s march out the Palm Room doors took him alongside heaps of trash whose removal had been delayed by snow.

Did it keep China from objecting? Hardly:

Officials in Beijing have summoned the U.S. ambassador to China to protest President Barack Obama’s meeting Thursday with the Dalai Lama, the exiled spiritual leader of Tibet.

Within hours of the White House talks between U.S. President Barack Obama and the Dalai Lama, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman issued a statement saying the meeting had “seriously harmed” U.S.-Sino relations.

“We believe the actions of the U.S. side have seriously interfered in Chinese internal affairs, seriously hurt the feelings of the Chinese people and seriously undermined China-U.S. relations,” he said.

Either don’t meet with the Dalai Lama, or meet with him properly. There are good arguments for either choice. But sending him out through the piles of garbage in an attempt to make his visit more “low key” is the worst of both worlds.

Note: I’m taking a few days off this week, so Allahpundit will be enlisting our Green Room contributors to keep things lively. However, I have a sneaking suspicion I may not be able to keep myself from posting an Obamateurism or two anyway…

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

The WH gave the press photos. The press objected and just HAD to use their own photo. This photo is the fault of the AP.

And, the Dalai is a very humble being. I don’t think he was phased by some trash.

But, the WH needs a trash CAN or something to put those bags in. Clean up your act, WH.

What a chicken sh*t Obama is.

katy the mean old lady on February 22, 2010 at 8:18 AM

A) 50 buck says the White House doesn’t recycle properly

2) When asked for comment, the Dalai Lama said, “Gunga galunga… gunga, gunga-lagunga.” So we got that going for us, which is nice.

C) Now if only they could grab the Pope and walk into a bar, maybe the joke wouldn’t be on us.

So a Tibetan holy man comes to see Odamna, The One, and The One shows him out the side door. It’s just another subtle “finger” to the rest of the world. 2012 cannot come soon enough

Exactly. Side doors are for union officials and other low lifes to sneak in and out of the West Wing without fanfare. That “trash” was probably the latest bags of cash waiting for pick-up by the SEIU and ACORN.

The Dalai Lama should have been treated better- if for no other reason than wearing sandals in DC’s slush and snow is no small accomplishment.

Does the White House garbage usually end up just sitting outside the doors…not even in a trash can or dumpster? Almost seems as if the “garbage” bags were placed there on purpose for just that photo-op.

I put “garbage” in quotes because it looks more like papers and such that were stuffed in the bags to make it look like garbage.

Similar to Obama being pictured talking to Netanyahu. Obama had his feet up on the desk, and the soles of his shoes showing. A sign of disrespect for Muslims, so Obama was sending a “I’m dissing the Israelis” message.

The original quote came from Rush Limbaugh. I think he was joking. Some blogs, like the one you quote, picked it up and ran with it.
Blogs are not plausible sources. The day I heard about it, I scoured the internet to find out about it. All I get is a couple of right wing blogs and the original quote by Rush on his webpage. He said it on the radio. I think he was joking and people believed it.
If you can find a credible source, let us know. Otherwise, I don’t think it’s a true story. SOMEone in the press would have picked up on it. Namely, Fox News. But there is Nothing out there that is plausible.

bridgetown on February 22, 2010 at 9:32 AM

bridgetown on February 22, 2010 at 9:32 AM

You could be right. I did see official reports later about the letter from FDR.

However, as to plausible… the National Enquirer isn’t considered a good source either, but they were all over the Edwards scandal when the media (including Fox) couldn’t/didn’t touch it.

Just because you don’t see it on CBS/NBC/Fox doesn’t mean it’s false. Be interesting to see if Rush revisits to clarify if he was joking, or if he has a source of credible info.
