“Scientists have been forced to withdraw a study on projected sea level rise due to global warming after finding mistakes that undermined the findings.
“Siddall said that he did not know whether the retracted paper’s estimate of sea level rise was an overestimate or an underestimate…
“In a statement the authors of the paper said: ‘Since publication of our paper we have become aware of two mistakes which impact the detailed estimation of future sea level rise. This means that we can no longer draw firm conclusions regarding 21st century sea level rise from this study without further work.
“‘One mistake was a miscalculation; the other was not to allow fully for temperature change over the past 2,000 years. Because of these issues we have retracted the paper and will now invest in the further work needed to correct these mistakes.’”

“The freezing temperatures and persistent heavy snowfall have meant this winter is on course to be the coldest [in Britain] since the late 1970s.
“Rob Hutchinson, forecaster with MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, explained: ‘This winter is shaping up to be the coldest for 30 years.
“‘There is a 95% chance that the period will have been the coldest since the winter of 1978/79′.”

“According to Mr Schapiro, carbon trading is now the fastest growing commodities market on earth. Since Kyoto signatories bought in to the cap and trade concept in 2005, there have been more than $300bn carbon transactions, prompting several investment banks, including Goldman Sachs and Barclays, to set up their own carbon trading desks. But that’s just the start. If President Obama and his supporters can institute a cap-and-trade system in the United States – and that’s a big if for this increasingly marooned presidency – demand could explode into a $2 to $3 trillion market…
“‘Carbon developers’, many of them employed by large multinationals, travel the world in search of carbon reduction projects to sell, while firms of carbon accountants have been established to verify on the United Nations’ behalf that those reductions are real. The whole thing, though well intentioned, looks wide open to abuse and scams. Mr Schapiro’s account of the carbon trading market is obviously a sceptical one, and no doubt there are others that take a less cynical view. But I wonder what all the wide eyed climate change campaigners are going to say when the first scandals begin to break, still more what they’ll make of it when the whole thing turns out to be another giant asset bubble – if indeed the non production of carbon can be described as an asset.”

“Carbon emissions are real. But buying and selling them is as ridiculous as setting up a baseball card exchange or a fart exchange, or a urine exchange…”
Or an online Pez (TM) exchange. Man, that just shows how stupid free-market capitalism is…
Umm, wait a minute…:>
Carbon trading, unlike the above example, is a complete government-engendered boondoggle, brought to you by an “environmentalist” with a zinc mine in his backyard and a railroad engineer with no expertise in geoscience, among other weaselly filth-bags.

I’ll be glad to use their data if they would be so kind as to rescue it from whatever landfill they seem to have filed it in.

I promise not to break wind all this week. How many carbon credits can I sell for that?
petefrt on February 22, 2010 at 8:39 AM
Balderdash. Honest mistakes are indeed part of the process but when it comes to the global warming industry, science made the facts fit the agenda and it has been proven that more than one “study” was launched with a pre-ordained set of findings. The people at the heart of the global warming fraud do not deserve to be referred to as scientists because they are practicioners of a ponzi scheme that far overshadows anything done by ENRON or Bernie Madoff.

Carbon credits have always been nothing more than a wealth distribution vehicle. They have made Al Gore so much money that his druggie son will never have to work for a living.
highhopes on February 22, 2010 at 8:43 AM
Trading in carbon credits??!! You might as well be trying to sell air. Wait! Wait! CO2 is air!!

Dont laugh, while in college I worked for a flower shop in DC. We had a large display of fresh African Violets and as a joke our manager blew up brown lunch bags stapled them shut and had African Violet Air printed on them 25 cents. Guess how many people tried to buy them? A LOT! I lowered my IQ 10 points just being in the same room with them.

We should be grateful to the Warmers for this Cap and Trade idea. It gave us all the motivation to oppose it. It’s free ammunition! If they had not done so, their hoax would have gone unchecked. Now, we can don our tricornered hats, pick up our muskets and fight like we did at Lexington and Concord against those who would deprive us of our property and legal rights to appease foreign potentates. Tis the spirit of 76 all over again.

Carbon credits have no deliverable, and thus are prone to corruption. All you get is a promise to plant a tree somewhere. It’s kind of like “The Star Registry” where they promise to name a star after your kid. I suppose you could call that a “star naming market”, but it’s easier to call it hucksterism. There’s no reasonable way of verifying the promise. Did they plant the tree? Do they send you a picture of it like The Christian Children’s Fund? How do you know they didn’t “plant” the same tree seven times? Notice that they’re talking about a UN enforcement team. Lovely. They’re going to fly UN agents around the world to verify these facilities. How much carbon is that going to waste, flying those guys around? Is there an offset for the offset inspector?
You basically can’t create a real market in something that has no deliverable, because the mechanism of enlightened self interest doesn’t get a chance to work. You bought the carbon credit, but you’re not going to call the carbon credit place and demand to see your tree, so it’s up to them whether they do anything about it, but they already have your money.

Ah the coming carbon bubble burst. What scam is after that, polar bear semen transfers for profit?
Don L on February 22, 2010 at 9:28 AM
Saw a show on cable the other day about ice bears. Yes, they are no longer called polar bears, they are now ice bears. You know, because they need polar ice to live and all.

The rich get richer off of cap and trade. Who would have thought? /
scalleywag on February 22, 2010 at 9:45 AM
Did they mention that polar bears are the only bears known to stalk humans as food? I guess when you live on a chunk of ice you have to take whatever you can get.

This is a sarcastic post, right?
Richard Lindzen, the foremost authority in the world, has pointed out these problems for years. He and many others have been shunned by these other “scientists/humans”.
A mistake is no longer a mistake when it is pointed out, but the person making the mistake ignores the facts.
You don’t understand that?
A scientist uses a chart that is in error, and that is brought to his attention time and time again, then asked for back up stats, and he can’t provide them, but still used the chart…is that human error?
When a Richard Lindzen says that the stats don’t back up your theories, and you don’t produce your stats…is that human error, or is it something else?
This isn’t some news reporter or “peer”, this is the world’s foremost authority on meteorology stating this.
right2bright on February 22, 2010 at 10:11 AM
It’s all a lie. Like everything the libs get their hands on. Lies. Here comes the next bubble to ruin the economy — the carbon credit bubble. Thanks Al and IPCC. The tar and feathers await.

Years ago, I used to work part time for some friends of mine in the cosmetics and beauty industry, who made a bloody fortune selling eye shadow and lipstick. And they were a fairly small outfit. After hacking around in show biz I often thought I should have joined up with them.
But holy jeebus, this carbon scam is HUGE! How can I get a piece of that action?!
J.J. Sefton on February 22, 2010 at 10:16 AM
SO with crap & tax we are going to make a worthless gas become almost 10% of the whole world GDP?
That just don’t make sense.
jukin on February 22, 2010 at 10:25 AM
Forget carbon. Polar Bear Rugs! Everyone will want one as a symbol of Mankind’s victory over this relentless predator. I’ll bet Sarah Palin already has a warehouse full of them.
RedWinged Blackbird on February 22, 2010 at 10:26 AM
I thought this process was over. Settled. Rising oceans, shrinking glaciers, rising temperatures, everyone agrees. But the rising oceans were wrong. So were the shrinking glaciers, and so were the rising temperatures.

What’s sad is that, unlike the dotcom bubble and the housing bubble, carbon trading produces nothing of value for society. It’s just making up prices for a commodity that would otherwise be worthless because of its abundance.
At least with the other bubbles, some useful things were produced along the way.
hawksruleva on February 22, 2010 at 10:46 AM
oakland is a shrill for Big Carbon Offset™. No credibility.
daesleeper on February 22, 2010 at 11:02 AM
It is not a worthless gas it is a cornerstone gas required for life. That said the scam that it is a pollutant is what is worthless.

Since when is ripping off billions of dollars from all over the world a “good intention”????
jeffn21 on February 22, 2010 at 11:07 AM
I’ve heard Rush say this on more than one occasion. If it weren’t for these lies, manipulations, and created crisis’….there would be no point of a democratic party. So they do what ever they want, and need to, to stay alive. As pathetic as that is.
capejasmine on February 22, 2010 at 11:09 AM
This comment just shows your ignorance. It is one thing to be foolish it is another to open your mouth and show the world you are foolish.
chemman on February 22, 2010 at 11:10 AM
We need to call it what it is and well intentioned isn’t the first thing that comes to mind.
chemman on February 22, 2010 at 11:12 AM
Gore pays himself thru his tax and cap company everytime he fires up the Gulfstream. Isn’t that just cozy?
kens on February 22, 2010 at 2:24 PM
You know something? For a 1/16th” mistake on a graph on a piece of paper, the fines range from a couple hundred US$ to over US$3000… I am sick of hearing how these scientists are “only human, aren’t they allowed to make mistakes…”
I bet my next paycheck that if they had been held responsible for their work from day one we wouldn’t have ANY of this fiasco…
On the other hand…it IS quite entertaining…
Never mind! Keep ‘em coming!
TASS71 on February 22, 2010 at 5:20 PM
Where does it say this? You might want to read the article above these posts.
Who says this?? Surely not the Academy of Sciences, of which he is a member. Is he not just another scientist who has his own particular take on the subject?
oakland on February 22, 2010 at 9:37 PM
No worries — the Climategate brigade can help them ‘hide the decline’ with their patented rule from the Data Fudger’s Handbook:
‘-’ + ‘|’ = ‘+’
A negative plus a vertical hashmark equals a positive.
