Mitch McConnell: Yes, Republicans will attend the ObamaCare summit

posted at 8:15 pm on February 21, 2010 by Allahpundit

So much for Friday night’s boycott theory. The Gingrich plan is, it seems, in effect:

Republicans have accused the president of using Thursday’s summit as political theater, and had raised the prospect of not attending. McConnell dismissed the idea of a GOP boycott, saying that “we’re discussing the — sort of the makeup of the room and that sort of thing, but yeah, I intend to be there and my members will be there and ready to participate.”…

White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer said in response that “the upcoming meeting is an opportunity to get beyond oft repeated and completely false talking points like these. . . . The President is coming to the meeting with an open mind and he hopes the Republicans do as well.”

Right. Via the LA Times, take a nice deep whiff of the White House’s new “bipartisanship”:

As voters lose patience with political gridlock, the Obama administration is embarking on a strategy aimed at putting Republicans on the spot: Either participate in bipartisan exchanges initiated by the president, or be portrayed as the party of obstruction…

“When you’re the president, you have the loudest microphone and clearest TV camera,” said Mark Corallo, a Republican strategist. “You get to stand up and look reasonable, bipartisan and leader-like. And anyone else ends up . . . looking like a petty partisan who is just interested in saying no. There’s no upside for the Republicans in even attending the healthcare summit.”…

An administration official said that in coming months, the White House would be quicker to point out instances of what he described as Republican intransigence. Though the White House has long believed that Republicans were committed to derailing Obama’s agenda, officials will be more aggressive in making the case.

In other words, a day after we watched that communique from Mount Olympus urging both sides not to turn the summit into political theater, here’s the White House all but admitting that the summit’s a key scene in the elaborate political theater they’ll be staging until November. Wonderful.

I was going to give you a clip of McConnell dumping on reconciliation, but this snippet of George Will celebrating the joys of gridlock and slamming the media for whining about “broken government” only when that government is controlled by the left is a better use of your time. He’s having a big weekend, huh?

Instead, Democrats say, they hope the event will create a climate that helps revive their legislation in Congress and prove to the American public that they are willing to hear out Republicans and even adopt their ideas.

petefrt on February 21, 2010 at 8:26 PM

The Dems need this media event to get the votes they need. Nancy and Harry have no doubt lost votes since the last one. There hsve been townhalls, the Tea Party rally in DC, Brown’s election, many retiremnts (including Kennedy’s) etc.

I doubt either has the votes now, even Nancy, who probably had some to spare and let them vote against Obamacare to mislead their constituents. Obama was higher in the polls then, too.

This is to show the Dems that there is “momentum” and that they can confidently criticize the GOP in the fall for being “obstructionist.”

They cannot imagine that there are GOP candidates who will say, “I’m obstructionist and d*mn proud of it”?

“The makeup of the room”? Shades of the Paris peace talks over Vietnam, where the shape of the table was an issue.

The VietCong wanted to be considered a separate “side,” and the US wanted them to be part of the North Vietnamese contingent. So instead of a square or rectangular table, they had a round one.

I have to respectfully disagree. There is no reaason to participate in anything whose sole purpose is to resuscitate a totally un-Constitutional piece of legislation that should ahve died a natural death 8 months ago.

America does not want Congress spending their time trying to pass something that America just doesn’t want.

All the GOP should say about this meeting, or health care, in general, is that the federal government has to remain within its Constitutional boundaries and that does not include individuals’ health insurance (which has no effect on the federal budget), and that the only thing that needs reforming is Medicare, which DOES sit on the government’s books. The GOP should tell the dems to go get the $500 BILLION in waste and fraud that the dems have promised is easy to find and scoop off of Medicare (without affecting anything) which made up the bulk of the funding for their insane takeover of health care. That is it. That needs to be the answer given to every Dem mention of “health care”.

GO GET THE $500 BILLION FROM MEDICARE!!

There is nothing else that the GOP needs to say. Force the dcems to work on that

The GOP has to show up in some manner after all the hype put out by the filthy lying coward and his minions and useful idiots (i.e. morons like Mike Huckabee). It also precludes the first line defense of using reconciliation to pass a bill that nobody but radical socialists want. But that doesn’t mean the GOP has to take whatever comes afterward. I personally liked Charles Krauthammer’s idea of making Congressman Ryan in charge of the discussion since he can speak intelligently about the funding lies put forth by the Dems. But she has political sense and does not rise to the Susan Estrich level of annoying speech.

In the aftermath of Gray Davis leaving office, all the candidates had to file by a certain date and time for the special election. The Governator was a favorite and all the press was staked out to show Arnie arriving in Sacramento to put his name into contention. Arianna literally circled the block so that she could “happen to arrive” at the same time so that the cameras showed her along with Arnie with Maria going in to become candidates.

Huffington failed at becoming Governor of California but she really does have some credentials. Compare to Megan McCain.

artist on February 21, 2010 at 8:59 PM

In other words, they’ll be forced into bankruptcy allowing the federal government to swoop in and institute a single payer system. And how long before they do that to every industry? I feel like I went to sleep and woke up in the USSR.

Scott Brown MUST be at this meeting. He’s the reminder that the ‘obstructionist’ Republicans couldn’t obstruct squat until Massachusetts sent Brown to the Senate.

joejm65 on February 21, 2010 at 9:03 PM

Earth to GOP:

Get the dems to get the $500 Billion in Medicare waste and fraud, NOW, that their whole fraud is “funded” with.

That is it. There is nothing for you idiots to talk about.

neurosculptor on February 21, 2010 at 9:05 PM

I personally liked Charles Krauthammer’s idea of making Congressman Ryan in charge of the discussion since he can speak intelligently about the funding lies put forth by the Dems. Obama wants a discussion, the GOP should give him one and demand real answers.

highhopes on February 21, 2010 at 8:40 PM

If we had a nickel for every lie berri tells and every opportunity the GOP misses, highhopes.

The only one in charge of the discussion and the entire kangaroo court will be berri. The GOP are giving him the cover he needs by being the willing stooges who he can point to as obstructing the process, even one that he so selflessly arranged and took time to participate in; to personally “mediate” in his all-knowing and all-seeing wisdom, and to have it televised for all to learn the truth from his very mouth.

After the debacle of sound bites and msm editing that the useful GOP idiots hand over to berri, he will say that the GOP’s disgraceful obstruction has left the Democrats no choice but to pass this much needed reform through reconciliation – which 90% of the population won’t understand, and at which time berri can lie as usual, saying that it is always done that way when there is too much gridlock, blah, blah, blah.

In this battle for the survival of America, we have as our defenders men who are unarmed, unable and because they “represent” us, when they hand themselves over to berri on a platter, they literally hand each one of us over, too.

How. Dare. They.

McConnell, you sh1thead – willing dupe and accomplice to the Dems.

What a f@#$ing moron.

Why does “This Week” insist on having Arianna Huffington? That voice could cut glass.

darii on February 21, 2010 at 8:21 PM

I’m not sure where she’s from but she’s been in this country for at least a dozen years and still has a hard time speaking English.

FloatingRock on February 21, 2010 at 9:08 PM

Sets himself up as the dispassionate party, so that anything stupid about the plan hits the congressional dems, not him.

darii on February 21, 2010 at 8:40 PM

This is a tremendously insightful comment.

Remember, there are (3) possible outcomes;
1. The meeting is a shambles – nothing comes out of it; nothing is passed.
Obama looks statesmanlike, and a “broken” congress and “obstructionist” R’s are at fault.
2. The meeting is (whatever,) and a bill is passed via reconcilliation.
Obama gets to claim “he did the best he could, with what the congress brought him.
3. The meeting produces some sort of compromise bill, maybe even with slightly palatable elements in it for both sides.
Obama looks like the great mediator.

In other words, this is a trap for both sides; no possible outcome will be blamed on Obama, and any success can be claimed fully by him.

What part of NO GOVERNMENT HIJACK of HEALTHCARE hasn’t been clear??? We’ve been saying the same thing since April. If the Repubs make one move towards “getting along”, they are worthless, spineless jellyfish and deserve all of the contempt and condemnation they will receive.

It should be right behind my bucket of tar and that feather mattress.

massrighty on February 21, 2010 at 9:10 PM

I’d like to be optimistic but based on the GOPs past performance I find it very difficult. Obama controls the agenda and the air time . . . just what in the world these dolts believe they can accomplish by letting themselves be ambushed defies rational thought.

rplat on February 21, 2010 at 9:12 PM

Seriously – it’s bullsh1t like this from Republicans in DC that is going to get them their walking papers as well, as well as a serious third party effort. In the end, it will be futile and the Dems will win elections in ’10 and ’12, and these morons will have helped them do it.

My God, these Repugnicans insist on snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, don’t they?

I hit submit by mistake.

Ariana’s English isn’t so bad, considering that the current occupier of the White House has still not mastered the correct use of the indefinite article (we’ll leave his inability to deal with fractions for another thread).

O.K. Republicans go to Obama’s circus, and show us something or rather anything that would give us confidence in your leadership. Strategy has never been one of your strong points.
