Video: “Family Guy” creator responds to Palin

posted at 2:06 pm on February 20, 2010 by Allahpundit

The head manatee finally weighs in. As expected, the crux of his reply deals with the eternal identity-politics question of who legitimately can claim to speak for a victimized group. Palin purports to, but her legitimacy derives from Trig and is thus one step removed. Counter her with a bona fide member of the group itself and you’ve got yourself an authenticity trump card — at least, until someone with Down’s who was offended by the FG bit comes forward to take Palin’s side, thereby leading to the rare yet entertaining authenticity stalemate. Here’s hoping!

More from the NYT:

Mr. MacFarlane said in an e-mail message that “Family Guy” was proud of the way that the Ellen character was portrayed. “She is headstrong, outspoken and, at times, almost domineering,” he wrote. “The fact that she has Down syndrome was deliberately played as a secondary element to her character.”

In a telephone interview on Thursday, [actress Andrea Fay] Friedman, who has also appeared in television shows like “Life Goes On” and “Saving Grace,” said she was perplexed by Ms. Palin’s criticism.

“I’m like, ‘I’m not Trig. This is my life,’ ” Ms. Friedman said. “I was making fun of Sarah Palin, but not her son.”

Gail Williamson, executive director of the Down Syndrome Association of Los Angeles, which, among other services, assists films and television series in casting actors with the disability, and helped Ms. Friedman get hired by “Family Guy,” said it did not matter whether she thought the episode was funny.

“Within ‘Family Guy,’ the character was fully included, well-rounded, dynamic, not dealing with stereotypical Down syndrome issues,” Ms. Williamson said. She added: “Am I a fan of that kind of humor? Eh. It’s beside the point.”

The phone interview with Friedman should help settle the question of whether her e-mail to the Times yesterday expressed her true feelings or not. (Also of note: The Times now acknowledges that Friedman’s initial statement about Palin did indeed include the nasty bit at the end about carrying around Trig “like a loaf of French bread.”) As for the boldfaced parts, compare MacFarlane’s and Williamson’s take to the Anchoress’s take on this clusterfark earlier in the week. She saw it coming from a mile away.

MacFarlane talks a good game about respecting the dignity of the mentally disabled, but after you watch, go read the lyrics that C4P transcribed from a song sung in that same episode of “Family Guy.” Exit quotation:

Her kiss is so inviting, and her hugs are so delighting.
And what makes them really nice is that they’ve got a little spice
Because they’re tighter than a vice and they go on for an hour.
My boy, between the two of us we’ll get you on that shorty bus.

Update: Via Breitbart, here’s the vid of the “Family Guy” song.

South Park doesn’t really insult politicians. They stick mainly to Hollywood lefty celebrities which make ends up being a lot more funny (except I suppose to lefties who worship Hollywood lefty celebrities, but who cares about them?).

McFarlane is a predator, who goes out of his way to make fun of those he disagrees with, or sees as an easy mark.

As for Ms.Friedman…she says she was making fun of Palin? I’m sure in her politically correct world, despite her claim that her family teaches her to laugh at herself…she’d be hurt, if she were attacked without provocation.

I agree….some people need to lighten up, but McFarlan goes to far, and this girl doesn’t even realize how exploited she was. Just my opinion.

After several posts flinging poo at Palin for taking offense. Is poo-flinging only acceptable when Palin’s the target?

All I did was agree with RightOFLeft in that, right or wrong, Palin’s not going to ‘win’ this round.

The cartoon gets its viewership with bathroom humor and cheap shots; their audience is not likely to suddenly all go sour on them if they poke fun at any particular group.

Who are you calling a monkey, you product-of-incest? You’re supposed to shup up and take the abuse, loser. So shut up and swallow it, whore.

The whore’s child can only dish it out, but can’t take it. Talk about a hypocritical piece of s***, just like it’s name implies.

Ya know what I’d really like to happen? All is forgiven and done and someday Family Guy asks Palin to do her own voice on the show, a la Rush and Karl Rove. There’s no reason why that can’t happen. In my opinion, Palin was overreacting, but it’s because she is very sensitive about Trig’s life, and I don’t blame her. It’s not because she wants attention.
Frankly, I’m tired of people saying that she is saying that she was outraged just to get attention. The woman’s not perfect, but she has a right to respond when O’Reilly asks her a question and a right to respond when someone even mentions her family, or even her for that matter. Seth McFarlane needs to get a clue too. I’m not in the “it isn’t fair that they only make fun of conservatives” camp; I”m in the camp that says that it’s ridiculous that they (Seth and crew) are too uptight about their OWN views that they can’t make fun of liberal politicians. Really, I mean come on. Almost every single show on broadcast TV, or for that matter TV in general, just can’t bring themselves to make fun of liberals. It’s saddening, really, that they would be that sycophantic and stupid that they would act and write that way. I could count the amount of leans-right shows on one hand.

NathanG on February 20, 2010 at 9:07 PM

By the way, Bush didn’t end up with a low approval rating because of a couple smart alec insults on late night TV. He got a low approval rating because he spent like a liberal and Iraq casualties got too high.

Speedwagon82 on February 20, 2010 at 6:59 PM

Brilliant satire!

In reality, Chimpy inherited 2 things from his Democrat predecessor. A recession and the deadliest attack on the US mainland in the history of the country. We took a huge financial hit from both.

Chimpy Bush also inherited an “objective” news media that called the election for his competitor before the polls had even closed, then rushed to Florida to demand their own personal recount of the votes to prove he lost. That had never before happened in American history, and never would have happened had the Democrat candidate beaten the Rethuglican challenger by 1/2 of 1% of the vote. After that, they considered him to have stolen the election, and therefore illegitimate.

As for “Iraqi casualties got too high”, the only people who keep track of that are Leftist college kids like yourself and the Bush-hating media, who like you and your classmates breathlessly counted down to 1,000 dead, 2,000 dead, 3,000 dead, etc. In the entire history of America no other group of haters had ever done that-cheering for the enemy.

You get a grade of F minus. If I could give you a G minus I would, but the Leftists you parrot who teach you won’t allow it.

I saw family guy once and could not appreciate the humor.

Sarah Palin’s uppity attitude is her worst enemy, anyway.
Moesart on February 20, 2010 at 2:29 PM

Imagine the outrage if a black contender for the White House had been called “uppity!” But that really is what Democrats and their media enablers think of us rabble. 2010 is looking really good, and I hope 2012 continues the trend.
chunderroad on February 20, 2010 at 2:43 PM

Already happened:

By Jonathan Weisman –
Rep. Lynn Westmoreland, a conservative Republican from Georgia, let slip today what critics have been saying is the subtext of many of the attacks on Barack Obama: He’s “uppity.”

According to The Hill, a Capitol Hill newspaper, Westmoreland was discussing Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s acceptance speech outside the House chamber today when he veered into his thoughts on Michelle and Barack Obama.

“Just from what little I’ve seen of her and Mister Obama, Senator Obama, they’re a member of an elitist class individual that thinks that they’re uppity,” Westmoreland said.

When a reporter sought clarification on the racially loaded word, Westmoreland replied, “Uppity, yeah.”

of folks….and looks real good after ;)

Uppity is too nice

what you have is a bunch of douchebags who want to position themselves to draw a vig on everything we do.

The only thing they put on is the system that keeps them comfortably supported while doing nothing to earn it

uppity is too nice a term

Speedwagon82 on February 20, 2010 at 11:59 PM

Actually, the R word applies to those fools who believed the msm lie that the war was a “slow bleed”. The war was practically won when Bush left office, but Obama has us bogged down again.

“Within ‘Family Guy,’ the character was fully included, well-rounded, dynamic, not dealing with stereotypical Down syndrome issues,”

Exhibit A for “this was a set up from the day it was written”.
Since when has a Family guy character been well-rounded and dynamic?

Nice picture of Seth MacFarlane. It’s good to see that those regularly scheduled sanding visits at the dermatologist to treat his scar removals and other unrelated complexion problems has worked wonders for him. He even looks about ten years younger than he actually is. Good on ya mate, you’re finally in the clear, so to speak.

Or, until Bristol comes forward and reiterates her plea for the media attacks on her siblings to stop.

There are two issues here, and protecting the DS community is only one of them; the other is stopping the escalating media attacks on Palin’s children.

Outing the voice-over’er as having DS addresses the first problem but does nothing to remedy the second.

If Sarah presses the second issue the optics look bad, but Bristol can simply let it be known — again — that she didn’t appreciate the attacks on her siblings and is asking for them to stop, without being “mean”. If that implicates Friedman, so be it; after all, *somebody’s* responsible for the targeting the Palin family, so who is it?

Just the other day I was thinking to myself, “Where are the Iraq and Afghanistan casualty totals we used to hear every day on TV? Is Ted Koppel still giving those? Were they suspended with a bunch of fanfare at some point, or did they just suddenly drop out with nary a word to anyone? What happened??

We’re still in Iraq. We’re still in Afghanistan. We’re still taking casualties. So, like, what’s the deal, maaaan?

In the entire history of America no other group of haters had ever done that-cheering for the enemy.
