Video: CPAC boos speaker for condemning invite to gay conservative group

posted at 6:05 pm on February 19, 2010 by Allahpundit

Via Greg Hengler, a clip that’s not as surprising as it may at first seem. The One’s agenda has vaulted fiscal conservatism to the top of the list of right-wing priorities; with even Darth Cheney sanguine about gay marriage, social issues simply don’t have the same bite that they used to. In fact, I’m curious to know if Ed’s gotten the same vibe at the convention that Time magazine’s getting — namely, thanks to the GOP’s tilt towards libertarianism, that the big tent is a little bigger this year than it used to be.

While I was flipping through the autobiography, a woman approached the booth. Catherine Sumner, it turned out, was part of GOProud, a group of openly gay Republicans and conservatives that for the first time is taking part in CPAC. “Is this your flyer?” Sumner demanded, waving the white and green pamphlet. Thus launched a debate about gays in the military that pretty much ended when the booth attendee told her that homosexuality is a sin and she’s going to hell.

“It’s insulting,” Sumner, 31, who edits a military magazine, said turning away. “Across the board the reaction to GOProud’s presence here has been positive, but then you have guys like this. Even Dick Cheney came out and says he supports us. Conservatives have to be more inclusive, they have to be.” In fact, just one group, Liberty University, boycotted CPAC over the inclusion of GOProud, though the Catholic crowd weren’t the only ones unnerved by their presence: one booth down from GOProud’s set up in the fourth row, those manning the National Organization for Marriage, which works to ban gay marriage, kept casting nervous – and slightly envious – glances at the somewhat larger crowd surrounding GOProud’s booth.

The tensions didn’t end there. Along the back wall 2004 World Poker Champion Greg Raymer stood waiting for a talk radio interview. “Focus on the Family considers poker immoral,” Raymer said, gesturing towards the Focus on the Family booth down an aisle. “They have no right to tell me what to do.” Raymer is at CPAC representing the Poker Players Alliance, which is lobbying to have a 2005 ban on Internet poker lifted – literally one of the last bills passed by the GOP before they lost control of Congress. “In the privacy of our own homes, consenting adults should be able to do whatever they want,” Raymer said. “Gambling is legal in America. They shouldn’t be mandating how we live. If they consider it a sin, they shouldn’t do it. But don’t tell me I can’t do it.”

Ed wrote a solid post supporting GOProud’s participation back before Christmas. Read that as prep for the clip.

Isn’t it possible, though, that the people you speak of are the ‘Liberal’ gays and not ‘conservative’ gays (like Tammy Bruce and Gaypatriot)? In which case, you could make the above claim about Liberals in general (because, really, don’t they all pretty much do the same thing?).

Hades69 on February 20, 2010 at 2:01 AM

If anything, Conservatives should reach out to Lesb!ans, Gays and Bisexuals. Specifically Gays and Bi-men, if they subscribed to the SoCon Virtue of Moderation or Restraint, their STD infection rates IMO would far closer to Heterosexual rates and Society would benefit as a whole from it.

I wasn’t trying to prove anything here, just a very simple question to the comment poster. I had no gender characterizations of God in the comment, so I have no clue as to where this thought process is going or what your “Mrs. God” statement means.

I can also see the Dept. of Education being either reformed or dismantled, as well as the IRS.

MadisonLiberal on February 20, 2010 at 12:38 AM

Nope, it should be dismantled all together. The Dept of Ed , which is not its original name, has gone through many premutations since the late 1800′s. It took presnt name in the 70′s if memory serves and split with the other half becoming HHS. But rather than halving eachs power, in actuality it doubled it, just one aspect of which is that it now occupies two seperate cabinet positions, plus their respective budgets balloned well beyond that.

It took its intrusive micro-management superceding local governance took place in 1953. For me this is the dividing line that where it burgeoned well beyond its mandate. and constitutionality. But that is a whole other arguement.

Where the rubber meets the road is results, which collectivists always wish to ignore because to them intent is is their focus. It matters not if little Johnny & Susy can’t read, they had good intentions. The road to hell and all that.

The point is, hands down the US had the top rated ed system in the world in ’53, it is 37th now now. with each progressive intrusion over time, every time they fiddle wityh it its mandate from education to social engineering, the system performs a little worse.

Bottom line, the more the guv gets involved and meddles, the lower the test scores of students, its a direct arc of performance. Numbers don’t lie.

The socialists have permeated the Federally mandated Ed system and rotted it to it’s core, it is cancerous and must be removed if the patient is to survive. No ifs, ands, or buts.

If they were just a nuisance, I’d go with your sentiments. But they are far more than a nuisance. They are seeking to reorder and restructure the traditional values to remove the basis for individual moral opposition to perversion.

Make no mistake – they look down on everything normal which is why they make sure that everybody knows what they do in the bedroom that they insist everyone stay out of.

They have no need of protection and they do not deserve special favors. The fact that they demand/solicit these things shows that they are both depraved AND deceitful.

MadisonConservative on February 20, 2010 at 2:23 AM

Alright we need some consistency here, is the accepted principle limited Gov’t or not?

One legislate penalties for criminality, but cannot legislate morality. This is behind the founder’s reasoning for freedom of religion, each religion’s definition of morality differs, so whose gets made into law at the expense of the rest? It is an insolvable problem which is why they deigned to steer well clear of it.

I argued above that the Fed’s involvement in education, which technically is outside it purview, on issues of moral beleif and bedroom activities it can only manage to be worse.

What two consenting adults do in the privacy of their bedroom should be beyond the law’s reach. What is acceptable in public should be all that is within it’s mandate.

I know the social right does not wish to accept this, but the means to address it constitutionally simply do not exist. That’s just the way it is.

Oh wait… I was supposed to stop yappin as I’m way buzzed. Hope I made sense.

God has no sexual preferences, does he?

I would assume God has no personal sexual attraction to anything. Sexual attraction is an animalistic trait required in humans for the propagation of the species; I would assume God isn’t subject to such a silly thing as sexual attraction.

Hence, males being attracted to females has nothing to do with being “made in the image of God,” does it?

We are only in the image and likeness of God analogously, so that doesn’t mean our fall means imperfection in God. Besides, because we are material beings, we are therefore imperfect by definition.

On top of that, the state of Adam and Eve was sustained by supernatural grace. So, it’s not as if our nature as rational, volitional creatures changed. If that’s what you are implying.

I’m agnostic and I’m dating an Asian girl. I guess I’m next on Jenfidel’s hit list.

I may be of help: When you quoted MadisonConservative you wrote MadisonLiberal. Whether one or the other, no one wants to be called the opposite of what they are (especially if conservative and called a liberal!).

Hades69 on February 20, 2010 at 2:50 AM

Oops my bad, must’ve crossed my wires, sorry. And you ain’t a kiddin! I was getting downright pissed!

I’m pretty sure MadCon said the DoE is in need of huge reforms or complete dissolution. But dissolving it isn’t going to instantly cure our school systems.

For the record, I’m a product of an American public school. Are you?

Good Solid B-Plus on February 20, 2010 at 2:58 AM

You want to use the state as an apparatus to inflict your morality on the rest of us.

While you want to use the State as an apparatus to inflict your immorality on the rest of us…

How does that make you any better than Johnny Bleedingheart who wants to use the government as a fulcrum to take from the rich and give to the needy? Both of you want big government interference, you just have different rationales.

Good Solid B-Plus on February 20, 2010 at 2:53 AM

I haven’t called for big government interference anywhere on this thread!
You have me confused with someone else.
As for “taking from the rich to give to the needy,” count me out.
I pay my income taxes under duress and I give to the needy through private Christian charities.
I don’t kid myself that the Nanny State can really reach the needy.

Jenfidel on February 20, 2010 at 2:59 AM

I haven’t stated that I loathe anyone here…

You’ve blamed interracial marriage for murder and egregious infidelity, so it can hardly be said you’re complimenting those that enter into such marriages. You dismiss and ignore the very real threats that still face homosexuals from people with your shared despisement. You’re just a bubble of hatred.

While we’re on the subject of hating, is there anyone you won’t attack for being clean and decent?

Jenfidel on February 20, 2010 at 2:55 AM

I never attack anyone for that. I do attack you for being a bigot of multiple stripes.

MadisonConservative on February 20, 2010 at 2:59 AM

Good Solid B-Plus on February 20, 2010 at 2:49 AM

There’s far too many who have ceased their devotion to the practice of sexual deviance for them to have been “born that way.” I understand the reluctance of many people to objectively judge perversion for what it is but that reluctance doesn’t require creating an explanation out of thin air. Deviants are bad for society and approval of deviants as equivalent to normal people is both illogical and destructive.

Disapproval does not mean persecution, nor does it compel persecution.

The only culture that has ever condoned homosexuality before modern times was that of ancient (Athens)Greece and that didn’t last all that long.

OK one more. A curious thing that, private in primary both here and abroad, limited public in secondary and dropped out in the 10th, later got an academic at Univ of Wash for my undergrad and just recently (many years later, I’m long in the tooth) got my masters from Univ of Illinois.

But Ive forever been a rebellous trouble maker and drove the Ultra-lib profs U of I bloody nuts. I was also oldr than most of them so they did not give me a whole lot of grief.

That would be a nice little conundrum for an Islamic scholar. After all, I have the ability to use taqiyya as soon as I convert, so lying to protect myself is sanctioned, but if my conversion itself was a deception….retroactive taqiyya!

The better part of agnosticism is valor. I’ll convert to whatever you want me to if you’ve got a gun to my head. Even those funky druids with their stone circles.
