Oh my: GOP ready to boycott ObamaCare summit?
posted at 6:38 pm on February 19, 2010 by Allahpundit
I’m reading between the lines, but you don’t have to read too closely. Greg Sargent reported a few hours ago that Reid is now openly talking about using reconciliation not only to pass O-Care but to pass a public option too. I still think it’s a bluff, but that’s a provocative bit of muscle-flexing ahead of a meeting with the GOP that’s supposedly aimed at compromise and conciliation.
Now here comes Cantor with a statement of his own responding to Reid. You tell me: Is this or is this not an implied threat?
“If the President is sincere about moving forward in a bipartisan fashion, he must take the reconciliation process – which will be used jam through legislation that a majority of Americans do not want – off the table. By using the reconciliation process, the Administration and Democrat leaders are sending a clear signal that they still refuse to listen to the American people and have no interest in bipartisanship. To be certain, by using the reconciliation process, the Administration makes clear that their promise of bipartisanship is dead.
“If the President’s intention for the health care summit is to finally show that he is ready to listen and work in a bipartisan way to produce incremental reforms that the American people support, he is off to a rocky start. The health care bills that the Obama Administration has apparently combined to form a new plan – unfortunately again behind closed doors – have not only been rejected by the American people and Republicans, but by Democrats on Capitol Hill who have spent that past year arguing amongst themselves over them. I urge President Obama, Speaker Pelosi, and Leader Reid to stop trying to subvert the will of the American people and finally start listening to them.”
He and Boehner demanded once before as the price of negotiation that Democrats take reconciliation off the table, and their bluff was called. If Obama calls this bluff too, what choice do they have but to walk?
Eh, I don’t think they have the stones to do it. They’ll show, but the summit will very quickly devolve into a grievance session in which the GOP pounds the table about reconciliation and The One pounds the table about obstructionism. That’s all it was ever going to be anyway; Reid and Cantor are just setting up the props for Thursday’s show.

On this alone, the Republicans should boycott the meeting as a farce.
And then when they try to shove it through reconciliation, clog up the process indefinitely with endless amendments.

They should send a scarecrow to the meeting so Obama can debate his favorite opponent: The Straw Man.

It has been insulting to have the president “call out” the Republicans to come to his healthcare drum circle and then hearing every Democrat in the country talk about how they are going to snooker the Republicans.
I didn’t want them to go in the first place and I will happily defend them if they end up boycotting it.

Originally I thought they should go, but now its clear the actual negotiations have been occurring behind closed doors again which defeats the stated purpose of this meeting. Unless the GOP has a rabbit that will really throw Obama and the DEMS off their guard, cancel and scream bad faith if not outright lies by Obama are to blame.

No. Obama posts his Steal America plan on Sunday. If it has any whiff of reconciliation than the deal is OFF and the GOP should fight tooth and nail to stop this.

wildcat84 on February 19, 2010 at 6:46 PM
It will be interesting to see if this really happens on the 25th. The President and the Democrats are still going to ram this bill down our throats, so I hope the Republicans all show up and one by one, each get up and leave the room.
yoda on February 19, 2010 at 6:47 PM
I really don’t know if they’ll show, or not. But I hope at this point, that they don’t.
It’s disingenous of Obama to call for a bipartisan meeting, where he says he’s willing to listen to all ideas brought to the table, all the while endorsing, and supporting reconciliation.
If this is what the Dems want to do…then do it. But why should the GOP show, if at the end of the day, the plan is reconciliation?
I’m so ticked off at these dems. They really don’t give a crap about the people, and they salivate incessantly at getting this crap passed, all so they can slurp up more power for themselves. It’s disgusting!!!

They might. But they need to defeat the meme that we’re the party of no without a plan.
They should call a press conference and say they aren’t attending Barry’s phony meeting, but at the same time they should have their alternative plan in hand. They should wave it in front of the cameras, make copies for everyone, send it out to the universe – really make a production of it. Finally, they should film GOP leadership stuffing it in envelopes, going to the post office, and sending it special delivery to Barry, Nancy and Harry with a copy to Brian Lamb at C-SPAN.

To the Dem’s bipartisanship means the same thing. When asked about it they use the Wynetter line except they say, ‘We have both! Liberal AND Moderate Democrats!’

It is my understanding that if the hc bill goes through the reconciliation process as a budget item them the Pubs can load it up with all kinds of ammendments like tort reform and purchasing insurance across state lines ect. Each ammendment will have to be voted on and this can really stall the process not to mention possibly kill the thing when the house and senate can’t agree on the ammendments.

We tried repeatedly to speak to you. To negotiate with you. We even belittled ourselves at your feet because we are inferior. We posted bills online. We attended every meeting, but alas! We found you behind closed doors with your lovers: Big Pharma, Big Labor, Big Insurance.
We were perplexed, yet we yeilded to your great wisdom, even though you cast us off as irrelivant, assinine obstructionist fools.
Yes, Dear Dem. We stood aside. As you took Big Business Interests and Big Pharma and Big Labor into your bosom, we watched and wailed and posted alternatives online. But you took our thoughts and you mocked them. You spewed about our ability to do “nothing”. All the while, millions spilled into the streets asking you to reconsider.
And now, here we are. Naked. Ashamed. Oh, dear Democrats. Do what you must. We naked, ashamed, bashed, taunted, ridiculed, scorned, undeserving, pithy people must stand aside so that you Democrats in your great wisdom and knowledge who purport to know what is best for us peasants do what is best for you.
Carry on, BaDonkADonks. Carry on.

Schadenfreude on February 19, 2010 at 7:13 PM
Exactly. Which is why Republican leadership should tell them to stuff it. They should come to the cameras and speak directly to the American people in the example of Reagan about what they want to accomplish and how no tweaking of the House/Senate healthcare plans can accomplish it.
It’s completely possible to spring a bear trap without using one’s leg to do it. The GOP would do better to get a good stout stick instead and poke it from a distance. It’s not like Democrats aren’t going to whine about “obstructionism” regardless of whatever Republicans decide to do anyway.

2. Have a man with a lumbar support place the bill on a table.
3. Press Obama himself to read page 1087 of the bill and be familiar with what it says.
4. No teleprompters.
5. He can’t answer what is on page 1087 and we’ll get the uhh, uhh, uhh, bush, uhh. uhh. Whatever.
6. Hand Obama a six page document that has been available. ONLINE and in the press for the last 9 weeks.
7. Ask Obama to answer why he still insists that there are no alternatives.
8. Warn Obama. Don’t you do this. Start over.
9. Walk out.
10. Watch Nancy Pelosi’s face melt.
