Obama: On second thought, I love Vegas; Update: Video added

posted at 4:53 pm on February 19, 2010 by Allahpundit

Ed’s written a bunch of posts about The One’s dopey Vegas gaffe, not because it’s important but because watching Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman gleefully rub Obama’s face in his mistake has turned out to be such an odd, gratifying pleasure.

But all good things must end. Today, my friends, the healing begins.

“Let me set the record straight: I Love Vegas,” the president said, to applause. “Always have.” He then repeated that he “love” for the city and that he enjoys it “every time I’ve gotten an opportunity to visit.”

Mr. Obama then made a gambling joke, saying the night previous he “drew a flush on the river and cut the budget deficit in half.”

The president acknowledged that he “did receive a little bit of heat” when he said “folks shouldn’t blow their college savings in Vegas.”

Mr. Obama said the comment wasn’t meant as a slight.

“I think everyone here would agree that the only place people should spend their college savings is in college,” he said…

At a town hall event earlier in the day, Mr. Obama also offered kind words for the city. After one man said he was visiting the city, he said, “That’s what I’m talking about — everybody comes to Vegas.”

He was there for a town hall, at which he was kind enough to drop the name of Harry Reid repeatedly. Everything’s going according to plan.

Update: Greg Hengler shares the love for Vegas.

And the ENTIRE trip – totally in support of Harry Reid’s re-election campaign – is being paid for by YOU and ME!

Because it’s a “townhall” meeting…and because he never actually said “re-elect Harry Reid”, it’s NOT a political trip, therefore, WE foot the entire bill.

OBAMA VISIT: Air tour operators must stay grounded

The helicopter and fixed-wing airplane companies that run tours to the Grand Canyon and over the Strip among other landmarks estimated that they’ll lose $500,000 to $750,000 in business because of the 30-mile radius no-fly zone imposed on them by the FAA’s airspace restrictions.
[...]
The president is scheduled this evening to attend a private $1 million fund-raiser for the Democratic National Party, accompanied by Reid, who is facing an uphill battle for re-election to a fifth term.

On Friday, Obama will hold two official events: a 10 a.m. town hall meeting at Green Valley High School in Henderson and then a mid-day speech to the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority to discuss his efforts to boost the sagging economy.

Sounds like he’s off to a great start!

I get that he’s trying to apply the Chicago way(buying off support) at the national level. The problem is in order to do this, he needs to use taxpayer money to pay off his cronies which means less money for the private sector and a stagnant economy.

In other words, it’s doomed to fail.

The spin from the media this afternoon (or should I say, the spin they were given from the WH) was he meant this dig at Vegas as a compliment.

Because, get this, he didn’t say Reno or Atlantic City, he said Don’t go to Vegas, which is a compliment because he automatically associated good times and entertainment with LV, not these other places.

Wow.

Seven Percent Solution on February 19, 2010 at 5:00 PM

The stats I heard on the radio the other day were that convention visitors were 25% lower last year versus 2008. Much of that drop has to be attributed to pbo’s veiled threat regarding business coming to Las Vegas.
While the number of tourists was down too, it wasn’t as severe as for conventioners. But, the visitors weren’t spending as much as they have in the past.

All this leads to the State needing to cut nearly $900 million to balance the budget as required by State law – layoffs and unpaid “furlough” hours are the result.
