Video: Rubio rocks CPAC

posted at 12:50 pm on February 18, 2010 by Allahpundit

Politico has a quickie edit of the best moments and a transcript of the choicest excerpts. (His most memorable line was about the salutary effect of the D.C. snowpocalypse.) There’s nothing groundbreaking here, but there doesn’t need to be. The point was to introduce himself to conservative America, serve up thick cuts of Grade A red meat, and take the occasional shot — indirectly, by needling Specter — at Charlie Crist. Mission accomplished. WaPo and Hotline report multiple standing ovations, and Ben Smith’s hearing chatter in the hallways about writing Rubio in as an alternative to Palin and Romney in the CPAC straw poll. An interesting point from Philip Klein:

Rubio has been billed as a rising star on the right, and in some senses, his speech was the mirror image of then state senator Barack Obama’s 2004 speech to the Democratic National Convention. To be clear, I’m not branding Rubio as a conservative answer to Obama or suggesting that this speech will have anywhere near the impact. But both speeches used similar framing to advocate very different ends. Back in 2004, Obama, similar to Rubio today, said that, “in no other country on earth, is my story even possible.” The difference is that Obama used that as a jumping off point to argue for a renewal of liberalism while Rubio used a similar theme to call for a resurgence of conservatism.

That’s a nice analogy, deepened by the buzz of youthful promise that they share. The One was an exciting break from the aging, wooden Gore/Kerry model of Democratic leadership when he made his splash in 2004; same today with Rubio (and Palin, of course) vis-a-vis McCain, Cheney, etc. Optics and charisma matter, and the optics and charisma here are good. It’s no coincidence that he was tapped to lead off a CPAC geared towards establishing a new conservative order.

Only one false note worth mentioning: Making teleprompter jokes about Obama when you’re … standing in front of a teleprompter?

Good for him.

The fact that he’s being discussed as a national candidate really speaks to how weak the bench is in the GOP category.

That’s as silly as pushing Brown or, multiple-loser, Romney.

AnninCA on February 18, 2010 at 12:57 PM

So he was standing in front of a teleprompter (which was already set up for other speakers as well).

Does that mean he was using it? Looks to me like he was looking down at his notes.

Bush and Cheney should both go away….except it is mildly entertaining when Cheney takes the blessed Caliph to task on Terrorism.

Not all Conservatives are in love with VP Cheney.

Without going into all the failures of the Bush presidency the fact that they had 7 years plus to win in the little podunk nation of Afghanistan and couldn’t beat the Taliban or Al Queda seems to be a failure of LARGE MAGNITUDE.

Cheney isn’t that Conservative on some other issues as well and he’s a career politician. Useful to bash Obama? Absolutely………any thing else……..not so much.

Danish, at least Rubio and Jindal have governing experience. Jindal was in Congress and has been Governor for three years. Rubio was the speaker of the Florida House. Also, what has experience done for the likes of Pelosi, Kerry, Reid, Shumer, Obama and the rest of the Washington elites? There aren’t many experienced Obama challengers who can beat him.

Rubio has been billed as a rising star on the right, and in some senses, his speech was the mirror image of then state senator Barack Obama’s 2004 speech to the Democratic National Convention.

Mirror image in more ways than one. I posted this on the other thread too.

Thought for the day:
This politician became well known because he successfully launched a campaign as an “outsider” while effectively pocketing Washington insider funds. His rhetoric was his strength, as he smoothly and sometimes movingly talked to his constituents about how he shared their passion for the same values that they held so dear. These voters, many who shared his ethnicity and heritage, and many who simply shared the ideals he espoused, were so taken in by this rhetoric, they either failed to check out his true voting record, or in the end, simply didn’t care. Finally this “outsider” probably was successful for more than any other reason, because he was able to capitalize on the mistake of anothers’ bungling of a very public issue. He was obsessed with the mistakes of his opposition, and effectively exploited them, even to the point of being able to avoid the spotlight on his own shortcomings and what would have been easy find flaws.
Clearly, I am talking about:

A. Barack Obama
B. Marco Rubio
C. It’s just not clear.

Squid Shark on February 18, 2010 at 2:45 PM

The teleprompter is there whether the speaker is using it or not. Doesn’t look like he’s reading off a TP, but a cue card with a few bullet points to remark on.

roninacreage on February 18, 2010 at 3:23 PM

Back in 2004, Obama, similar to Rubio today, said that, “in no other country on earth, is my story even possible.”

That’s right Barry. Your story was only possible in this country — but that doesn’t mean there is anything exceptional about this country, does it?

This great and generous and prosperous nation gave you every opportunity in the world, and instead of being grateful to our country, you vowed to “fundamentally transform” it.

If one knows how to use a teleprompter, one’s audience does not know it is being used. If one doesn’t know how to use it properly, one comes off like a cold, mechanical Obobblehead.

IF Rubio was using a teleprompter, he was using it properly. His connection with his audience was not broken or hindered by it; his delivery was natural and warm.

The joke Rubio made references not Obama’s use of a teleprompter, but his dependency on the gizmo, and therefore, isn’t the least bit hypocritical.
