Duke rape accuser charged with arson, attempted murder

posted at 10:55 am on February 18, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

North Carolina TV station WRAL offers a bizarre coda to the strange and polarizing case of the allegations of rape involving the Duke lacrosse team.  Three years ago, Crystal Mangum started a national debate on race and justice when she accused the team’s players of raping her at a party, only to have the entire case fall apart and the prosecutor accused of misconduct.  Last night, Durham police arrested Mangum for attempted murder, arson, and identity theft after responding to a domestic disturbance call:

Durham police arrested Duke lacrosse accuser Crystal Gale Mangum, 33, late Wednesday after she allegedly assaulted her boyfriend, set his clothes on fire in a bathtub and threatened to stab him.

Authorities charged her with attempted first-degree murder, five counts of arson, assault and battery, communicating threats, three counts of misdemeanor child abuse, injury to personal property, identity theft and resisting a public officer. …

Mangum is the author of the memoir “Last Dance for Grace.” She was a student at North Carolina Central University in 2006 and also worked as an exotic dancer when she performed at the now infamous Duke lacrosse party.

It was there, she claimed, that three white members of the team trapped her inside a bathroom and raped and sexually assaulted her.

According to the WRAL report, Mangum committed the arson while three children were in the house.  She gave a fake name (hence the identity theft charge) and resisted arrest.  She will appear this morning for her arraignment, where it will be seen if she make can make bail.

If there’s one lesson to learn from this, it’s not to jump to conclusions.  Just because the police have filed these charges doesn’t mean they’ll stick.  Attempted murder has to involve more than a threat to stab someone (although technically that qualifies as assault, which only requires a realistic threat of violence).  Mangum gets to have her day in court, if it goes that far.

Too bad some of Mangum’s supporters, including dozens of instructors at Duke, didn’t keep that in mind the last time.

hell, with the MSM in the state that it is, just watch hardball or countdown tonight and that little ploy will be played for her.

Maybe Sharpton can bring Tawana Brawley with him when he goes down to NC to defend the criminal and impugn every innocent person connected to the case? That would serve to bring his whole career full circle.

Or, maybe Sharpton won’t go to NC but will be invited onto O’Reilly (who loves to have the scum on), who will be more than happy to host Al and Tawana on his pathetic show. They can discuss how the prohibition against false accusations is just the West imposing its values on poor, unsuspecting minorities …

.

She’s the Henry Louis Gates of pole dancers.

More seriously here, Mike Nifong is the one most to blame for the Duke Lacrosse trial debacle. He saw an opportunity to score points with the black community during his campaign for re-election and took Ms. Mangum’s accusation and ran with it to offer up white college boys to pander to the victim-American class.

Wonder what Mangum ever did with that college education Jesse Jackson gave her.

Dire Straits on February 18, 2010 at 12:17 PM

I can imagine the laundry list of excuses we’ll hear from the Left…

1. Her accusation might have been false but it was accurate. We all know what she alleged happens all the time.

2. This long list of charges is revenge, so she ‘learns her place’.

3. She’s suffering from PTSD.

4. Maybe she didn’t know the children were in the apartment.

5. It’s wrong to bring up the past.

6. The incidents aren’t related.

7. She needs help, not punishment. After all, even if the rape didn’t happen as she said, she was still traumatized.

8. Making this a news story is pandering to Tea Partiers and people who drive pick-up trucks.

Yadda, yadda, yadda.

But, I wonder, if the boyfriend and those three children are black, too. What about the targets of her fury? Or don’t they count?

An NTSB official told Fox News that they are investigating this as an intentional act, and said it appears the pilot set his own house on fire and then got in his plane and flew it into the building (which is next door or very near to a local FBI office)

it was a lynching party, not a bit of debate ever happened. the media and faculty declared them guilty and shouted down anyone who tried to point out the flaws and fallacies in the case.

I don’t recall any debate. None. Zero. Zip. Nada, pendejo. What I do recall are accusations, exploitation, self-promotion, posturing, high dudgeon, extortion, and a lot white guys trying to weather the storm. Again.

Doorgunner on February 18, 2010 at 2:24 PM

and a lot white guys trying to weather the storm. Again.

If you think only white people were troubled by that episode you’re mistaken. What storm did these white guys have to weather? What does that mean? Were all white people on trial?

That is an odd statement. I’d love to understand it.

PatriotRider on February 18, 2010 at 11:11 AM

I’m sure they’ll chalk this up to post traumatic stress syndrome from her previous attack by the lacrosse players lying.

Durham is a liberal’s dream: college town, lots of VWs and Subarus, truthers, Obama stickers, coffee shops and tree-hugger outfits. When the anthrax scare was going on 5 or 6 years ago, one large house on a main road sealed up it’s windows and vents with sheets of plastic and duct tape. They had a sign in the front yard that decried the war and another with a giant question mark.

There are several nice areas of Durham, but it’s reputation as a crime-ridden city keeps most people from buying property there. People get shot in broad daylight at the mall and there are certain streets you don’t drive through, even during the day. The diversity-championing city planners put government subsidized housing throughout the city, in every neighborhood, so there wouldn’t be one “ghetto.” Instead, there’s a little ghetto everywhere.

The cops always pile on the charges when making an arrest. It is difficult to get additional charges filed after the case goes to the DA and very easy for charges to be bargained down in return for a “guilty” plea.

Expect this to be plea bargain down to Domestic Assault and Reckless burning. There may or may not be special circumstances due to the precense of the children.
