Video: The eerie yet riveting Mossad assassination clip

posted at 4:25 pm on February 17, 2010 by Allahpundit

The first vid will give you the basics but I recommend watching at least a few minutes of the much longer second one to get a feel for how elaborate this operation was. The target: Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, a Hamas military honcho at the top of Mossad’s hit list. The team, allegedly: 11 Mossad operatives, a mind-blowing number not only in terms of the coordination involved but the risk that one of them would be found out and the whole squad would be pinched. The Times of London picks up the story:

Stepping out of the lift, al-Mabhouh was escorted to room 230 by a member of staff at the Al Bustan Rotana hotel, near Dubai airport. Unnoticed, the taller man followed him down the corridor, clocking his room number and that of the room opposite, 237. In the hours that followed, room 237 became the staging post for the audacious murder of the senior Hamas official.

Within an hour of al-Mabhouh checking in his killers had established that room 237 was unoccupied and moved in across the hall. By that evening seven of the team were gathered in the room, waiting for their opportunity…

Security footage of the killers’ movements during the afternoon, released by police in Dubai yesterday, underlines the professionalism of the operation. The group switched hotels several times and wore disguises including false beards and wigs, while surveillance teams rotated in pairs through the hotel lobby, never hanging around for too long and paying for everything in cash…

Throughout the operation, none of the suspects made a direct call to any another. However, Dubai police traced a high volume of calls and text messages between three phones carried by the assassins and four numbers in Austria where a command centre had apparently been established.

Follow the link for details of the hit. One bizarre footnote to all this: Evidently the passports used by the assassins match those of Israeli citizens who are unconnected to the operation. Essentially, Mossad stole their identities and now the innocents are left to deal with the consequences.

Exit question: How on earth did Dubai intelligence put all these pieces together so quickly?

This is all very strange. Video cameras everywhere. Talking on cell phones. Speaking into hidden devices. All caught on camera. Almost intentionally caught on camera.

I’m amazed that they figured all this out, and so quickly. I mean the idea of going back and scanning CCTV cameras seems simple enough, but you have to figure the poor quality of the video and the sheer number of people who come through Dubai airport, the hotels, the shopping center, etc. And how did they even know which businesses to ask for CCTV footage?

If the identities of the assassins are real, it’s pretty infuriating that they would publicize them. Hopefully Dubai was in on the assassination and is deliberately helping spread disinformation. If not, then maybe we need to “accidentally” drop a bomb on a UAE embassy somewhere.

this is a great question. To put this detail together in a month is pretty dadgum good. Either the intel folks that did this are turbocharged, or this was a setup to watch a Mossad operation and bait them.

ted c on February 17, 2010 at 5:50 PM

Absolutely incredible. Whoever the killers are, they did an outstanding job.
I wonder why if the hotel had such excellent security cameras the wings/hallways were not filmed just the lobbies? Also at least two male “civilians” had their faces blurred in the clip but civilians were not generally blurred. Both times it happened as an agent was being filmed/highlighted. I would bet there is more film and the Dubai authorities know more.
Also I think the door could be locked from outside w/bent nose pliers that are normally used to remove wire clamps from carb/fuel hoses on vehicles. The means would be easy after the other logistics these guys were able to pull off. How about the two women agents—they rock. The whole team did. I watched the entire clip thinking they were going to shoot the suspect w/a silencer pistol—I guess that is too 1980s.

arnold ziffel on February 17, 2010 at 5:50 PM

Because Dubai knew. This is their obligatory outrage to cover up any geopolitical or domestic problem. I’d be shocked if multiple countries, including Austria and European countries, didn’t know. Heck, I’d be shocked if we didn’t know.

No one outside of whacko world is sorry to see this guy go.

amerpundit on February 17, 2010 at 5:14 PM

Exactly. In public, the Arab nations need to support outfits like Hamas, but in private, they would be happy just to see them go away or at least kept well under control. I have heard somewhere, Stratfor maybe, that a number of the Arab nations “unofficially” dialog with Israel and are happy to let the Israelis do the dirty work on stuff like this. They then play their role and feign indignation when actions such as this are carried out. The truth be told, it is in the interest of Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, etc. to have Israel as a foil for the Palestinians. If Israel did not exist, all these terrorists would be able to focus on toppling the House of Saud and other of the corrupt Middle Eastern regimes.

I mean the idea of going back and scanning CCTV cameras seems simple enough, but you have to figure the poor quality of the video and the sheer number of people who come through Dubai airport, the hotels, the shopping center, etc. And how did they even know which businesses to ask for CCTV footage?
joe_doufu on February 17, 2010 at 5:46 PM

They should have been able to put this together in less than 48 hours, very easily. You start at the end and work backwards:

The victim was found inside the room. The electronic door locks will reveal when the door was last opened. Checking CCTV for that time will show who else was on the floor about then. Those faces can be matched to check-in CCTV from the lobby which then gives you check-in time and passport number.

Records from mobile phone base stations will give a list of phones in the area which, when matched with CCTV records will allow you to get a short list of phones possibly used by the suspects. Those phones can then be checked for movement and since many big buildings will have their own interior base stations you can easily match phones to individual buildings at specific times. Checking the CCTV for those buildings will confirm or refute that the suspect was linked to the phone. Once you know which phones were in use you can check the numbers dialled. Then you find all other phones that dialled the same or similar numbers, or that received calls as the suspect phones were making calls (thus even though they were contacting one another via Austria you could link the calls by time). The base station records will tell you where these other phones were at given times so you can check the CCTV records for those place at those times to see images of other suspects.

The passport numbers will be linked to flight numbers and hence to arrival and departure times thus, even if the phones were not in use at the airport you still know for which times the airport CCTV will be relevant.

They don’t even necessarily need to do all the searches manually. Software exists to analyse phone records to find patterns of call usage that would link two phones even though they never call one another and never call the same numbers.

The team, allegedly: 11 Mossad operatives, a mind-blowing number not only in terms of the coordination involved but the risk that one of them would be found out and the whole squad would be pinched.

Later reports reckon at least another 6 suspects were involved, so 17 minimum.

There is no reason why every team member needed to know every other team member. For example, the surveillance teams only needed to visually recognise the target, so even if they were caught they wouldn’t have incriminated the others because they possibly wouldn’t have known who else was involved, how many people were involved, or even what the ultimate plan was. It is quite possible some team members only learned what their mission was about after they read about it in the newspapers.

If one member was caught then, as soon as they failed to make a check call, the others would be alerted to abandon the operation and leave immediately.

I watched the whole 27 minutes when this way in the headlines this morning, and posted the same question.

It’s not like I’ve ever tried to kill a senior level terrorist in a foreign country before, so maybe it takes that many people to pull it off smoothly. The terrorist was also alone (his security personnel arriving on a later flight), so maybe the 11 people was in anticipation of a larger group.

Either way, at least 3 of those agents now have their faces known and it seems like it would be difficult for them to continue as field agents from this point forward.

It’s sort of a non-secret secret that Israel and the UAE have been working together. An American security agency, whose key execs are ex-Mossad, constructed a multi-million dollar training facility in the desert outside Dubai to train Emirati security forces.

Wouldn’t be surprised if the UAE allows the Israelis to stage its strike assets there in advance of any raid on Iran.

As for how they managed to lock and latch the door from within, that is really strange.

I have stayed in hotels where it was feasible for a brave/foolish person to clamber from balcony to balcony and then re-enter the building through an unlocked window of an adjacent room, and from there back to the corridor. They apparently had door control technology so they could have gained access to any adjacent room to open a window.

Take it somewhere with posters that don’t go “TROOOFUR!” like a jack(ass)-in-the-box.

Dark-Star

Both of you are full of crap. Everyone knows the Jeewwzzzzzz were responsible for 9/11.

One down, 150 million terrorists to go.

If terrorists can cut off American’s heads, should we feel sorry for a known terrorist who supplies arms to Hamas in order to murder Israeli civilians?

Do not mess with the Mossad or God’s chosen people.

dthorny on February 17, 2010 at 10:42 PM

Anything involving Israel, and especially the Mossad, is a sure-fire Troofer magnet. Thanks to David2.0 and Dark-Star for keeping the record perfect.

Spiny Norman on February 17, 2010 at 10:44 PM

The other thing is if its locked and chained from the inside…how did the killers escape?
Conservative Samizdat on February 17, 2010 at 6:28 PM

They didn’t.

They manipulated the chain with “rare earth” magnets from the outside of the door, along with a small optic fiber camera so they could see the chain and the latch.

They need to check the chain for residual flux lines.

DSchoen on February 17, 2010 at 10:50 PM

There is just one word for such a despicable act.

COOL!

faol on February 17, 2010 at 10:56 PM

How do we know the Israeli citizens are alive?
Couldn’t the Mossad have used documentation from people killed previously?

gstep58 on February 17, 2010 at 9:53 PM

Some of the actual individuals were interviewed in a few of the written pieces I saw.

BadgerHawk on February 17, 2010 at 11:03 PM

May all Hamas scum meet the same fate.

WannabeAnglican on February 17, 2010 at 11:22 PM

Now that was an eye opener! One thing that is crystal clear…If Massad wants you..You are dead..Another scumbag bites the dust!!

It’s common for troofers to commit the classic argumentative fallacy of making hyper-dramatic unsourced claims and requiring everyone else to prove them wrong.

That’s always been their M.O., and that’s the way they snare a lot of people with sawdust for brains who skipped out on their Logic 101 classes.

When troofers are backed into corners and forced to give evidence, it either lacks thoroughness, or is of questionable origin, or both.

Oblige the big talkers to provide their absolutely unassailable and unquestionably credible and thorough sources, or tell them to go jump off a cliff.

Basically life is too short to spend much time swimming in troofers’ rivers of horse diarrhea.

Edouard on February 17, 2010 at 11:49 PM

Islamists, you look to your terrorists and the Mossad will not have to take them out.

Good job, Mossad.

Time for Israel to bomb Iran nuke facilities by the way.

Past time.

Get to it!

Sherman1864 on February 17, 2010 at 11:54 PM

I guess there’s no statute of limitations for Mossad.
Abby Adams on February 17, 2010 at 4:34 PM

You guessed right!

In 2001 the sister of Ilan Sa’adon, the other soldier whose kidnapping and murder al-Mabhouh took part in, said; “I very much hope they find them and kill them, just as they did to my brother.”

Twenty-one years later, a long outstanding debt has finally been paid.

DSchoen on February 18, 2010 at 12:15 AM

Proof?

It’s a known fact.

Hell, it might even be in the 9-11 commission report.

Your ignorance is no incentive for me to do your homework for you.

Google it.

David2.0 on February 17, 2010 at 6:08 PM

LOL, what an idiot. amazing how people claim such outlandish accusations are such common knowledge, yet they stammer when it comes to providing proof or even directing you to where proof can be found. It’s always the same response, “it’s a known fact, google it”.

And no, none of that is mentioned in the 9/11 Commission report.

I haven’t stayed in a hotel with an actual chain-style security lock in years. They all have the metal loop deal now.

That style lock would be easy to engage as you closed the door just by, say, putting a loop of nylon monofilament around it an pulling the latch closed as you shut the door. Then pull the nylon string out just before door closes tightly.

Molon Labe on February 18, 2010 at 4:01 AM

this was riveting. Coordinated, sophisticated, professional (as far as I can tell).

ted c on February 18, 2010 at 4:08 AM

The other thing is if its locked and chained from the inside…how did the killers escape?

That’s an easy one. The killers had a room next to his. Already had cut an opening through the wall to get in before his arrival. Their entrance and exit was through the wall opening.

Next question?

There\’s so much detail in these that half expected to see Erin Andrews in her Dubai hotel room…
