Report: Clinton and Carville ready to go after tea party leaders?
posted at 5:32 pm on February 17, 2010 by Allahpundit
I’m skeptical. What would it achieve?
Big Government has learned of at least one other conference call/meeting around this time. A meeting of former Clintonistas and senior Democrat political operatives to coordinate a push-back to the burgeoning tea party movement. Consider it a Democrat party relief effort…
Big Government has learned that Clintonistas are plotting a “push/pull” strategy. They plan to identify 7-8 national figures active in the tea party movement and engage in deep opposition research on them. If possible, they will identify one or two they can perhaps ‘turn’, either with money or threats, to create a mole in the movement. The others will be subjected to a full-on smear campaign. (Has MSNBC already been notified?)
Big Government has also learned that James Carville will head up the effort.
Obviously, there is no love lost between Obama and the Clinton machine. It may at first seem odd that Clinton would rush to Obama’s defense, but the tea party movement poses a threat far beyond the immediate goals of the Obama Administration.
For starters, while I suppose anyone can be “turned” if the dirt on them is dirty enough, you’re dealing with some pretty fervent ideologues when it comes to the tea-party leadership. Guys who believe firmly enough in what they’re doing to dress up like Thomas Paine aren’t ripe prospects to become traitors to their own side. Beyond that, precisely what sort of information are the Clintonistas hoping to glean here? The names of all the Birthers in the ranks? Advance warning of the next rally? The whole point of the tea-party movement is to remain decentralized and leaderless. Under those circumstances, what real power does a “leader” have? Beyond all that, given the attention right-wing media has devoted to the tea parties, why would Clinton et al. risk a PR clusterfark by targeting citizen leaders of a populist movement in this political climate? If it could be proved that Democratic bigwigs were trying to intimidate John Q. Public and his “Don’t Tread on Me” flag, the political cost would be vastly greater than the benefit.
But those are all details. Here’s the big question: Per this morning’s CNN poll, tea partiers are potentially the best friends Democrats have. All the left needs to do to blunt the effect of a Republican wave in November is convince TPers to run as third-party candidates, thereby drawing off 15 percent or so of the vote and ensuring Democratic reelection. In which case, er, why target them? Destroying tea-party leaders won’t blunt grassroots conservatives’ demand for smaller government; if you really want to protect the progressive agenda, the smart move would be to encourage more tea-party leaders and drive some sort of permanent wedge between them and the GOP. What am I missing here?
Update: For once, Michael Steele has the right idea.

See, they assume that we are like them: that every one of us has skeletons in his or her closet that would compare to Teddy’s or Blago’s or Edwards’; that we have only selfish, nefarious motives; that all our support of the movement is based around on person’s charisma and if that can be punctured, our support will evaporate.
They’re wrong on all counts, of course, and it’ll be fun watching them figure it out.

Oh yeah, the why question. I look to Clinton to sabotage Obama in some way in this effort. I still think Bubba set the Dems up on Obamacare with his bull about the ’94 Congress was a reaction to the failure to pass Hillarycare as a way to pay them back for switching to support Barry and not Hillary. Remember, narcissists care about themselves not others, even their own party, so it makes sense when you look at it from this perspective.

It’s just thug tactics. They want to intimidate people against speaking out.
Everybody has secrets they don’t want to be revealed.
Makes perfect sense to me. Carville and his ilk are just criminals who discovered that politics is less risky than the street anyway.
notagool on February 17, 2010 at 6:40 PM
Do they mean Sarah Palin? Now that’s funny, what hasn’t been thrown at Sarah Palin already? Don’t they think they might come off sounding like whinny little girls? That’s a broken record there guys. Going to start attacking women in a populist movement…Oh I can see now how attacking “Moms” and “Grand Moms” is going to go over with the public. They really are out of ideas.
Dr Evil on February 17, 2010 at 6:43 PM
It makes no sense for B.J. to join Carville and go after Tea Partiers because they’d have to find dirt on 30 million people, and it would destroy any reservoirs of good will amongst independents towards Hillary. That being said, some of these Tea Party leaders are maddening. From the Michael Steele link:
From 1994 on? 1994 was when the Republicans were in the budget balancing/fiscal conservative glory.
And…
I understand the concept that the GOP should stay out of primaries, but if they’re going to oppose Coats they better have some one spectacular to run against him.

Disturb the Universe on February 17, 2010 at 6:53 PM
I wonder if this was leaked to throw tea partiers off track.
I would expect a different strategy from Carville/Clinton, like orchestrating racist incidents at tea party gatherings. Send in a few African Americans, make sure you’re near the news cameras, and then have your thugs attack them. Verbal abuse would suffice. Others will spout their Birther views, anti-abortion, and other social agenda items.
All those who attend tea parties need to be prepared to intervene immediately when such incidents occur.
jeanneb on February 17, 2010 at 6:54 PM
Tea Party people must be extremely powerful. Imagine a former President…who was supposed to be President to all Americans…conspiring with cue ball to take down a group representative of middle America and the peaceful movement created to voice their opinions. I say, let them do it. Perhaps the former President will be surprised to discover the number of people who voted for him, as Democrats, but are now Republicans or Independents.
mtb on February 17, 2010 at 6:54 PM
Let’s see they are going to attack Middle Class Americans who apparently vote, who are paying attention to the state of our Country…so they are going to attack, and alienate these potential voters. All the while who is going to vote for the Dems, and contribute to their campaign coffers? Because wow that stimulus they passed really didn’t do anything for employment. Remember when the Democrat Party USED to be the party of the Blue Collar Worker NOT anymore.

The only grassroots Clinton has ever seen were accidently rolled into a fatty.
Aviator on February 17, 2010 at 6:58 PM
Perfect timing.
As mentioned above Bill Clinton was asked today about a new book on the impeachment wherein he did his classic finger waving denunciation of the investigation calling it an abuse of power and against the law and Constitution.
During the Fox roundtable Mort said in the book Clinton describes Henry Hyde as rabid and so on. Mort says what he’s always heard was Hyde took on the case intending to go the censure route and it was after the Clinton WH put out the story on Hyde’s ancient affair he realized he had to follow the facts and so it went.
That is how he operates. No point in wailing about how it “doesn’t make sense”. These people are out to attack and destroy where they can if they perceive a payoff in power can be attained.
KittyLowrey on February 17, 2010 at 7:04 PM

Sarah Palin telling folks to pick a side, did more damage than what Clinton and Carville could ever hope to accomplish.
The tea party folks are not made up of the regular herd mentality follow the personality so they are not going to be shepherded – or in Palin’s case Cowboyed into a Political Corral.
Here is an example of telling me to pick a side. I am down here in Texas and Rick Perry is the epitome of the paid for Politician, playing his odds with the Tea Party Movement right now trying to get some Tea Party Smell on Himself. So if Perry wins the primary for the Republicans, and he comes up against White the Democrat pick I might just want to punish Perry and the Republicans for trying to make me chose the lesser of two evils again…which I won’t, so The Republicans, think they can run their song and dance past the electorate one more time? They didn’t learn from 2008 and McCain? I had hoped the Republicans would have a faster learning curve.
Dr Evil on February 17, 2010 at 7:06 PM
The Race Card is the most rapid-fire all purpose ad hominem and vapid weapon of smear, mass deception and diversion ever conceived by man. It is a weapon under which weak minds are servilely crouched and can be fired with the greatest of ease by even the most intellectually challenged, and in fact, was designed especially for use by them. It is void of justice. It is void of liberty. It needs no footing in rationality. It has no expiration date. It doesn’t even appear to have a half life. There are those who theorize that it may continue to exist indefinitely in some form even after time itself has come to an end.

And not to go too far off-topic, but while posters here are right that Americans are getting tired of these thuggish smear tactics, the MSM will be there to aid and abet Clinton (and Obama) as much as possible.
In the aforementioned new book out on impeachment it mentions what is being treated as a revelation, even on Fox, but is in fact something that was long ago revealed by one of Starr’s prosecutors (Hickman Ewing, if memory serves), that there was an indictment draw up against Hillary in the Whitewater matter.
Compare how baseless ethics charges filed against Palin were treated to the bombshell (as I say, known years ago but verified in this book) that Hillary Clinton was almost indicted. The only reason she wasn’t is they had to have an absolutely air-tight case. They had enough evidence that the ordinary citizen would have been indicted.
And, as I type, related to the thread topic, Hugh Hewitt is saying that CNN just put up a story on Who Are the Tea Party people based on a poll of 124 people.
No, it may not work but they all will give it their best shot, throw enough against the wall and see if anything sticks. That’s the modus.

The same thing here applies to the Bill Clinton and James Carville crime syndicate. The only ones that care are the media because it gives them jobs. The media is way too lazy to dig up stuff and the stuff they make up is just too funny. The world has changed and the grass roots are in ascendency. The Democrats are not.

The amendment passed the House and lost in the Senate by one vote…Every democrat in the Senate voted against it…If it had passed the Senate it would have gone to the States for ratification…IF, the balanced budget amendment had passed we would have easily sidestepped the debt crisis that it now strangling our Republic…Which, is a principle reason for the Tea Party Movement…Bill Clinton and the democrats are the most destructive force this Republic has ever faced in its nearly 250 year history!

What? Hillary is letting Bill go out on his own again? The threat isn’t attacking Tea Party ‘leaders’, but in trying to do so and then get a ‘bimbo eruption’ that puts focus on Bill and what he is up to… and Carville isn’t the most telegenic of guys to have around when a ‘bimbo eruption’ happens. Its been way, way too long for Bill Clinton not to have had a few dalliances that will show up when he tries to step into things, and he will step in it.
Like clockwork.
Bill lost his only effective operative when he lost Dick Morris… Carville knows mean, but not subtle.
The Tea Party is transforming from a Rattlesnake into the Hydra… and its got way more than 7 heads coming from it, and you have the strange suspicion that if the C&C show tries to publicly take down one head, that two will appear right after it as no one, NO ONE, likes to see the rich and powerful pick directly upon the average citizen. Save the bitter Left, of course, but they are finding themselves eaten through with bitterness which just makes them vile, not effective.
