Obama’s Jobs for Fatcats program

posted at 9:25 pm on February 17, 2010 by Karl

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss. The Daily Caller gets the ball rolling:

Barack Obama has long decried the corrupting influence of money in politics. As a candidate, he ran against lobbyists and the pay-for-play culture of Washington. As president, he has continued to hammer the theme, most recently in his impassioned attacks on the Supreme Court’s ruling in Citizens United v Federal Election Commission.

Given this, it’s a little surprising to learn that Obama has not only embraced the sordid money-driven culture of DC, but actually outdone his predecessors. An analysis by the American Foreign Service Association, for example, found that Obama has stuffed the diplomatic corps with more political appointees (i.e., cronies) than any president in the past 40 years. Only a year into the administration, close of half of the president’s biggest donors already have federal jobs.

Of course, it is really no surprise, as Obama’s bundlers got perks during campaign and were are made to feel part of its inner workings through weekly conference calls and quarterly meetings, advance copies of his speeches, access to his top advisers, opportunities to influence the campaign’s message, and so on.

The DC’s Chris Palko goes on to list the Obama bundlers who landed plum jobs with the administration. However, the story does not examine their biographies, so here are a few highlights.

Howard Gutman raised over $500,000 for Obama, and is now Ambassador to Belgium. He was once a lobbyist, but more recently a lawyer whose clientele included Susan L. Rosenberg. Who is she? Rosenberg is a one-time member of the Weather Underground terrorist group who was charged in the notorious 1981 Brink’s robbery that left a guard and two police officers dead. Her pardon was blasted across the political spectrum.

Tom Perelli, another lawyer who raised over $500,000 for Obama, is now Assistant Attorney General. His former clients include the RIAA, and he is continuing the crusade against teenagers downloading MP3s from his new post. He also helped Michael Schiavo terminate his wife’s life support.

Alan Solomont, another top-tier buck-raker, is now Ambassador to Spain. In his past life he was a founder of J Street, a recently formed “pro-peace” Jewish lobby designed to be a counter to AIPAC, from which even Democrats scramble.

Then there are the folks from Wall Street. Democrats usually see these folks as greedy jackals who destroyed the global economy, unless Obama puts them in the special “savvy businessman” box. For example, Michael Froman, who raised over $200,000 for Obama, is now Deputy National Security Advisor for International and Economic Affairs. He worked for Citigroup. Eric Schwartz, who raised over $100,000 for Change, is now Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees, and Migration. He worked for Goldman Sachs. Louis Susman raised over $200,000 for Obama, and landed a gig as Ambassador to the Court of St. James in the UK. He worked for Citigroup Corporate and Investment Banking.

This just scratches the surface. The story is a nice addition to the reporting already done showing that the Obama administration is stuffed with the people who created the financial crisis in the first place. But there is more to mine from the data.

How Goldman Sachs Made Tens Of Billions Of Dollars From The Economic Collapse Of America In Four Easy Steps

Goldman SachsInvestment banking giant Goldman Sachs has become perhaps the most prominent symbol for everything that is wrong with the U.S. financial system, but most Americans cannot even begin to explain what they do or how they have made tens of billions of dollars from the economic collapse of America. The truth is that what Goldman Sachs did was fairly simple, and there may not have even been anything “illegal” about it (although they are now being investigated by the SEC among others).

The following is how Goldman Sachs made tens of billions of dollars from the economic collapse of America in four easy steps….

Step 1: Sell mortgage-related securities that are absolute junk to trusting clients at vastly overinflated prices.

Step 2: Bet against those same mortgage-related securities and make massive bets against the U.S. housing market so that your firm will make massive profits when the U.S. economy collapses.

Step 3: Have ex-Goldman executives in key positions of power in the U.S. government so that bailout money can be funneled to entities such as AIG that Goldman has made these bets with so that they can get paid after they win their bets.

Step 4: Collect the profits – Goldman Sachs is having their “most successful year” and will end up reporting approximately $50 billion in revenue for 2009.

“Barack Obama has long decried the corrupting influence of money in politics. As a candidate, he ran against lobbyists and the pay-for-play culture of Washington.”

Another day, another example of a psychopath saying the exact opposite of what he actually does…

… with a smile on his face. In fact, it seems to amuse him on how easily he can fool the masses.

In the coming years, as the true measure of the damage done, ripples through our nation…

… I am sure the taste for revenge and justice for those who caused this crisis to our families, feeds a never ending desire for retribution.

I remember and was shocked back then. But (she puts on quizzical look, tilts head and twists index finger into cheek, musing:)How in the word is it that this EVERYMAN rose from obscurity to become the leader of the free world?

The media should be throttled for foisting this ‘poser on us! And, I believe they will be correctly judged by history.

Also shocked to see AP producing 12 posts on a slowish newsy night. New management perhaps?

I THINK we’re in agreement, but I’m not sure I understand the sentiment, quite.

Chewy the Lab on February 17, 2010 at 10:01 PM

At this point, we might as well vote in an oil baron or a media mogul for POTUS. They’d surely do better on at least some national issues, and we could quit pretending that our government listened to voters over lobbyists.

What I want to know is who/which organization moved half a trillion dollars worth of U.S. money market accounts overseas overnight on Sept. 11/12, 2008. In my opinion, that was the ‘straw’.

I’d also like to know if anyone involved in those moves is now an Obama administration staffer or appointee.

My personal “favorite” is the buying off of the new Ambassador to Malta, Doug Kmiec.

This former very influential pro-lifer turned his belief system upside down in order to sell his soul to Obama.

Kmiec’s apostasy delivered Obama tons of misguided cafeteria Catholic votes.

marybel on February 18, 2010 at 8:24 AM

The only way we’ll ever change the way things work in DC is to throw all the bums out and start over again. And since that isn’t possible, we’re stuck with a liar for 3 more years. We can only take comfort in the fact that there’s no way in hell this guy will have a second term.

MarkTheGreat on February 18, 2010 at 9:05 AM

Why? It’s no secret that big business & big government have the hots for each other, even if they both try and undercut/outflank/manipulate each other on a regular basis.

The least we can do is declare what is common knowledge instead of constantly ignoring the elephant in the room.

Dark-Star on February 18, 2010 at 9:35 AM

And to clarify a bit…at least a business tycoon would have some idea of how the hell to direct a national economy in a positive manner. (unless we stupidly elected some spoiled brat who was born with a platinum spoon in his/her mouth)

If push comes to shove, I’d much rather live in a prosperous corporations than a crumbling nanny-state empire.

Dark-Star on February 18, 2010 at 9:39 AM
