Las Vegas mayor snubs Obama
posted at 10:12 am on February 17, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman has a very busy schedule. After all, the city has a budget deficit, and even after that, Goodman has to bolster tourism to keep the local economy running, and Vegas has had some setbacks on that front. Goodman doesn’t have time for frivolities … like accepting a meeting with the President of the United States on his next visit:
Mayor Oscar Goodman has refused an invitation to meet with President Obama when he arrives in town on Thursday. Mayor Goodman called President Obama a slow learner after he told Americans not to blow money on a weekend in Las Vegas if they were saving to put their kids through college.
“I’ve got other things to do quite frankly for my constituents here in Las Vegas who rely on me to do the right thing as a mayor,” explained Mayor Goodman. …
“I haven’t heard an apology, I haven’t heard a response, all I do is get invitations,” Goodman went on to say.
Obama’s going to Vegas? I thought if we were saving for a college education, we shouldn’t blow money on the casinos. Doesn’t the same axiom apply if we’re saving to nationalize the student-loan industry? I guess this must be Obama’s way of showing patriotism, after Harry Reid’s stern lecture on the subject.
Honestly, though, Goodman’s overplaying his hand. The first comment Obama made about Las Vegas was objectionable, but the comment from earlier this month wasn’t an attack on the city, but just common sense — although Obama probably should have avoided mentioning Las Vegas by name and stuck with the generic “casinos” reference. Regardless of party, an invitation from the President to meet with a mayor while visiting a city should be treated with respect for the office, at the least.
As I suspect that I’ll be in the minority on this point, let’s take a poll:

He should accept and take the opportunity to explain to Oblabbo in front of a live camera that words mean things, and that Oblabbo should be more careful in choosing his.

I don’t like arrogant people so I wouldn’t accept his invitation. If the guy takes such efforts to hide something as trivial as his college records, I can’t imagine him ever becoming a genuine, forthright friend. Don’t waste my time.

Obama\’s political poison, and he\’s slammed LV on two occasions. Had he received a personal call from The One to meet, he probably would have accepted. As for Respect for the Office, the Office shouldn\’t \”play favorites\”, and Obama\’s repeated jabs at LV are pretty selective.Dubuque, IA, has some casinos, but you don\’t hear Obama saying that you shouldn\’t go to Dubuque on a junket.

I take my previous comment back. Accept the invitation, then stand him up!
That’s the disrespect he deserves.
riverrat10k on February 17, 2010 at 10:54 AM
How should you treat the man who has single hand idly done more to bring disrespect on the office of POTUS than anyone?
Good on you Mayor!
donh525 on February 17, 2010 at 10:55 AM
That doesn’t surprise me in the least. But the MSM will still paint a picture; people often have short memories. It’s more an aside than a major factor to me.
I can’t blame the mayor per se, and Dem propaganda will go on no matter what until the MSM is beaten back and crushed.
I’m thinking along the lines of how I was raised, and that I come from a long line of soldiers. If I somehow came face-to-face with Obow, I’d show all courtesy due him as the duly elected president. If he asked me what I thought of the job he’s doing, however, I’d tell the truth.
Then go for that hot shower.
Liam on February 17, 2010 at 10:56 AM
He’s the most powerful man in the world right now, and that’s something we used to be proud of. Just because Obama’s disrespected the office doesn’t mean we should, betraying our own principles in the process.
Maybe so, but they consider Lieberman a Democrat even if he’s their John McCain. Besides, since he’s not one of us, we have no sway over him. He’s far more likely to listen to Harry Reid than Michael Steele, and the ones paying attention enough to know about this snub must also realize this.
Personally, I’m more worried that people here no longer respect the office of the presidency because of partisan politics.

Also mentioned the window company outside of Philly that was saved by stimulus funds. Failed to mention the cronyism involved in sending money to that company while ignoring other nearby window companies that were losing business, thanks to the gubmint looking out for their friends.
Also predicted by this time next year our country’s manufacturing share of long-life batteries will jump from providing 2% of the world’s supply to 20%. Thanks Carnac, you are awesomer than Jesus.

That’s my largest concern and has been a long time, since Clinton left office and began criticizing Bush–thus breaking a long-standing tradition of former presidents commenting on a later Administration.
I say to let libs be themselves, and not always fight fire with fire. There are times and places for that, and if done it should be with all that can be mustered.
Now, for me, were I in the mayor’s place I’d get my tail out of town–maybe a vacation in Atlantic City.
Liam on February 17, 2010 at 11:03 AM
“NOT commenting on former presidents” that is.

jukin on February 17, 2010 at 11:07 AM
The man in the office, represents the office.
Respect can go up and respect can go down for the man.
We all can have mixed feelings on how that affects the office itself.
There has always been partisan politics. What’s changed?
And what do you mean by “people here”?
donh525 on February 17, 2010 at 11:07 AM
Mayor Goodman is correct that Obama was flippant about singling out his city. Twice.
He’s not categorically turning down the invitation, either. He’s asking for an apology, in the form of a private phone call, first.
Hardly “disrespectful”.
RushBaby on February 17, 2010 at 11:07 AM
It is impossible to respect the “office” of President when that office (aka the administration) acts in such a partisan manner. Stimulus passed on a party-line vote. Obamacare was fended off on a party line vote. The GOP has been left out of any substantive legislative discussions time and again by Pelosi, Reid, and the filthy lying coward in the White House. Respect for the Presidency begins and ends with a President that respects his/her role as President. Referrring to the White House as “his house” shows that the rat bastard traitor doesn’t get it.

Obama should have said Atlantic City instead of Las Vegas. Even Reno would have been an improvement.
Also, do we know when the mayor is next up for re-election? Perhaps he’s concerned about getting a kiss-of-death endorsement…

ED….you are in the minority….first of all the argument about “respecting the office” doesn’t fly here for 2 reasons…
1) Obama doesnt respect the office and sets the example for what “respect of the office” means.
2) Obama misinterprets what it means when someone meets with him out of “respect for the office”. He doesnt see it as anything other than that person has given in to Obamas motives and wishes and desires like a good little narcissist that he is. He doesnt understand the concept of meeting him out of the “respect for the office” which means that the person doesn not agree and is basically visiting with him unter protest but is trying to show that he respects the POSITION and OFFICE with which Obama occupies, not Obama himself.

That’s what the GOP has always done & look where the country is today. The only way to fight libs is kick ‘em when they’re down & keep kicking them!! The time & place is now & wherever we find them. Maybe I just took people seriously when they said they were bothered by the Left’s disrespect for the office when Bush was president.
People who are here at Hot Air. I don’t know how to make that more clear.
Change a few words, and this is exactly what they were saying about Bush a few years ago.
Esthier on February 17, 2010 at 11:26 AM
Exactly. He used to represent a bunch of guys who buried a lot of problems in the desert outside of Vegas. The movie Casino is based on his main client, Tony Spilotro, who was played by Joe Pesci in total psycho mode.
teke184 on February 17, 2010 at 11:28 AM
Yes, indeed. I find myself thinking and reacting and saying things that sound just the same as was said about Bush. And formerly, my credo was to always fight fair, always. But just speaking for myself of course, I’ve gotten scared and worried that my high-mindedness was going to ultimately help me lose to those for whom fair-fighting doesn’t compute, or worse, force me to flee and lose everything I hold dear. Perhaps my ideological opponents on the left thing the same. That’s why I’ve decided it’s war.
JiangxiDad on February 17, 2010 at 11:31 AM
Pop quiz, Ed…what segment of the population is responsible for any non-Vegas/Atlantic City casino operation in the United States?
He shouldn’t have mentioned casinos at all…if you specify any industry, you’re going to offend someone who works in that industry. Besides, people spend money way more frivolously on goods and services they don’t need than they do on gambling. The sob stories about losing the life savings, house, or car to the casino are the outliers, not the norm.
He could have simply said, “If you’re saving money for college, stop spending money you don’t have.” It’s not that difficult to be vague enough to not offend but meaningful enough to get your point across. You just don’t single anyone out.
James on February 17, 2010 at 11:32 AM

Enough already with 5-4 court decisions that enrage half the nation and presidents being hamstrung by their opponents in Clowngress. As corny as this sounds, one side or the other needs to be told “you lose” in such an epic manner that it slinks under a rock for the next decade at minimum.

Because his entire campaign, almost, was a lie; and because of the past year, I have trouble considering the big O president. I was ashamed of Clinton, but at least considered him the President. This president is ashamed of us, wants to change us into something more acceptable… How can you consider someone who signs you up for >$40,000 in debt as your president?
Big O is more like an impostor, Manchurian candidate. It’s more complex than simple respect for the office. I wouldn’t care to meet him. From the mayor’s perspective, what good would it do?
OT: don’t know anything about the mayor, but there are reasons besides being a lush for having a red face. Rosacea(sp?) comes to mind, probably there are many.

The mayors refusal is exactly what LV needs.
Penn Gillette was on B O’Reilly’s show last week and set up the reality nicely: “People are in real fear here, not the million dollar acts – but the actual working, breathing life of Las Vegas. We aren’t just a gambling town – but a family destination – filled with weirdos and quirky people. Thats why tourists come here.”
As to casinos – you are either for them or against them. To say “in these times its common sense not to go to a casino” is tripe.
Goodman has set up a lovely “us vs them” scenario – in Nevada that went Obama in 2008 – along with an ACORN investigation. One guy, along with his admin in the WH is killing the economy – and specifically called out avoiding Vegas – twice now, in order to make a cliche-ridden “point” about responsible “spending”….as the national deficit, debt, unemployment and federal bailouts tip the trillions…
Obama is trying the tired “everyman” argument that worked for the fools during his campaign – but have now been the bain of his presidency. I notice Obama had no comment concerning seeing a broadway show 1,000 miles away for a “date night”…
Me thinks this issue runs a little deeper than a photo op “rejection”.
Odie1941 on February 17, 2010 at 12:23 PM

You’re correct. Even against the protests of a few of our founders, the USA was engineered so as to limit the damage that the popular will could do. There will be neither stability OR fairness in any system if there aren’t some parts of it the whims of the people can’t hijack.
Unfortunately, modern mass media has done an end-run around the safeguards.
