Video: Palin responds to “Family Guy” on the Factor
posted at 10:00 pm on February 16, 2010 by Allahpundit
A complement to this morning’s Facebook post. Even some lefties are taking her side on this one, but the Anchoress counters with an intriguing question: Did Sarahcuda miss an opportunity here?
Family Guy represented Chris’ date as having the common sense, social awareness and self-confidence than the (so-called) “normal” character lacked. The character says her mother is the Governor of Alaska. So?
What exactly is the victimization, here? The Down Syndrome character was respectfully rendered; the Governor of Alaska is the mother of a Down Syndrome child. By reacting as she has, all Palin has done is helped reinforce a notion that she is brittle and defensive and not-unwilling to play the victim card on behalf of Trig, who — she has admirably said, herself — is perfect, beautiful and will be participating in life and athletics and everyday challenges like everyone, and will be lucky enough to do it with a proud, loving and supportive family…
Were I Palin, I would have taken this cartoon in the best possible spirit: (regardless of how I thought it was meant) and commented:
It was gratifying to see Family Guy depict people with Down Syndrome as functional, social, courteous, outgoing and independent, and I was so glad to see it. In an era where the word “retard” gets thoughtlessly thrown around by even the most “sophisticated” of people, and when so many in the medical community are so quick to recommend aborting babies that are correctly (or sometimes incorrectly) diagnosed with Down Syndrome, my family and I so are grateful to the producers of The Family Guy; they had the insightfulness and generosity of spirit to help normalize the notion of what it means to live with Down Syndrome, and how full any life can be, even when the definition of “ordinary” becomes a little changed. While my family was not specifically named in that episode, we are proud to be associated with it.
A clever retort, although I can’t blame Palin for opening fire on a show that once implicitly compared her to a Nazi. Exit question: Did she drop the ball here or was a little outrageous outrage perfectly appropriate?

You know, George W. Bush was attacked relentlessly and brutally by the msm and he never spoke up. Not a word of protest. And where did that get him?
No, no one should take this crap laying down, especially if it’s your own child.
atheling on February 17, 2010 at 12:34 AM
This Anchoress has got to be kidding right? The DS girl presented was nasty and pushy which is not a flattering picture of her and is not like any DS child I have ever encountered… She wants Sarah to praise that?

Yeah, I thought that was hot too!
atheling on February 17, 2010 at 12:35 AM
Silly, silly people. This is the kind of woman most men dream of. Strong feminine (not femnatzi) keeps commitment and is Mama Bear. The kind of woman you can be a man for. And topping it off, the left hates her.
Yep, my kinda gal. For President.

It takes a strong woman to make a great man.

She’s right to take the offensive about this kind of crap. Anyone who watched it knew that it was a joke about Sarah Palin’s Down Syndrome baby.
It’s not defensive when you counterpunch.

It would appear that some GOP no longer understand that. Look at Mitt. a guy takes a REAL SWING at him. and he calls a flight attendent to come save him. It would also appear the moderate GOPer’s most favorite position is the fetal position.

Caststeel on February 17, 2010 at 12:52 AM
People here seem to have the impression that she was being strong and standing up for her children and counterpunching and not lying down…etc. But I didn’t see it that way. I saw it as her depicting herself and her family as victims. If she is so strong then she wouldn’t need 10 minutes to defend herself against a 10 second bit on a freakin cartoon. I agree she should have said something. But it should have been short and concrete.
unrealcitizen on February 17, 2010 at 12:52 AM
If she gets the nod, I’m voting for her without a second thought.

Okay, so tell us what she should have said. Give us an example of “short and concrete”.
atheling on February 17, 2010 at 1:05 AM
Noted. I think O’Reilly and Palin here are both fighting a no-win battle, but hey, more power to ‘em.
Palin could talk about this for an hour straight and it wouldn’t change my opinion that she’d be balls to the wall awesome as president.
That being said, I think she’s too good for DC.

Ditto that.

FG actually used a handicapped child to portray Sarah Palin as a prostitute animal abuser.
Brittle in this case is a spear broken off in (a fictional character portraying of course) the Family Guy Producer.
No more unanswered lies, its how liberalism validates itself.
Speakup on February 17, 2010 at 1:09 AM
I like the Anchoress a lot. She’s one of my favorite bloggers.
But I think she watched a different episode from this one – at least, from her POV. I’ve been quite familiar with Family Guy, and I can tell you that it IS crude, rude, and nihilistic. Having a 2-year-old with nefarious desires just doesn’t suit me. (Having to deal with a three-year-old girl who refuses to eat dinner is hard work enough for me. I don’t have to watch the cartoon of a toddler brat to reinforce it.)
The offensive nature of this episode was not necessarily targeting Trig directly: it was a punch at Sarah and her children in general, implying that ALL of her children are “retards”. That little Trig may have a heart of gold doesn’t matter here: this was meant to insult the entire Palin family. I believe that’s what p!$$ed her off. That’s why she asked, “When is enough, enough?”
Seth McFarlane has shown zero love for Republicans over the years: don’t be surprised by this move. I also think he has stepped over a land mine, and he’s about to blow with it.
newton on February 17, 2010 at 1:11 AM
Awww, c’mon. “Short and concrete” like “FO you fool.” and you would somehow have no criticism?
A five minute statement is verbose?
Not that you would be guilty of such but just commenting that you are approaching something that has been done before.

This whole invented-outrage issue is like watching a bunch of mangy dogs rolling around in each others’ excrement. The Leftist MSM, the lib-trolls here, even the likes of Allahpundit for eagerly carrying the sewer-water of this nonsense.
We are all cheapened by it.
/and anyone familiar with my blogging past knows I’m not one for the pretense of ‘the high road’.
The Lefts (and PDS-afflicted) EVERY repetition of this character assault on Palin is nothing more than a deliberate setting back of any rational discussion, back tot he first days of her being named to the McCain campaign. It is as deliberate as the cries of ‘racist!’ hurled at conservative speakers at universities. It is nothing more than a deliberate attempt to divert from more substantive discussion. And its working. Here we are, discussing nothing more than the empty reaction to an empty charge. While NOTHING else changes or is changed by the discussion. Groundhog Day.
rayra on February 17, 2010 at 1:13 AM
After getting late to the party, and wading through three pages of posts, I’m left with a question bouncing around in my mind. I’m curious.
Of all the posters who think that Palin should have handled the situation differently, than the way she chose to, I find myself wondering how many have walked ‘that path’, in ‘those shoes’. How many critics have tread the mile in the shoes of a special-needs-child’s parent. Lets have a show of hands.
In this world of ours there are some truly evil people. They think theirs is a world of entitlement, and one group of those entitlements is the right to belittle, insult and castigate those with whom they disagree. If they can’t achieve their goals directly they will attempt it through attacks upon the person’s children, their religious beliefs or their lack of a socially acceptable education from the ‘proper school’. Even worse, they might be from a state with a low population. Nothing about the non-entitled is sacred, from their viewpoint atop the elitist mount of entitlement.
These evil and warped people need to be identified. Held to the ridicule their actions deserve. Coddle them and you just encourage more of the same. Some, when they don’t get their due, their entitlements, might even resort to shooting their co-workers.
It’s long past the time to turn the other cheek, and take the crap. It’s time to throw it back in their face.
Some. Things. Just. Aren’t. That. Funny. Anymore.
Yoop on February 17, 2010 at 1:15 AM
I thought this was good. But the real point is that this is becoming her only story. I just wish she would focus more on critiquing BHO and his policies. She might be, but I haven’t heard it and neither has the next person. Its just disheartening since she has a lot to offer.

Re atheling:
No I don’t read her facebook page. No I didn’t hear her Tea Party Convention speech. There already arn’t enough hours in the day for that. I only hear and see snippets. Which is exactly my point. Everyone, besides those following Palin’s every move, just hears snippets too. And the lack of variety in the snippets are what is troubling.
And I already answered your question on what she should have said when I quoted ckoeber.
And I think Bush’s strategy was fine, and an impressive display of not letting his emotions get the better of him.

So, years ago I used the name unrealcitizen as my sn and it kind of stuck.
unrealcitizen on February 17, 2010 at 1:34 AM
i love you concerned trolls. You wouldn’t last a minute in Palin’s shoes the left would eat you up and spit you out.
Palin got the left running in circles. while they try to belittle her she fires off, does a speech for 5,000 supporters raises $400,000 in a hour time for the GOp to attack your candidates in 2010. and the left is forced to make fun of a psecial needs child and then say she didn’t handle things right.
How is that concern working for you all…..ROFL Palin is doing everything right. she has yet to make a mistake and her popularity and power continue to grow unchecked.
so go ahead make fun of trig some more or willow or bristol. I would strongly suggest to leave Piper alone. she would mess you up more than her mother.

Caststeel on February 17, 2010 at 1:44 AM
So you complain that she doesn’t attack Obama and his policies enough, yet are ignorant of all she has done regarding that because all you hear are “snippets”. And whose fault is that? Sorry, but saying you can’t take a half hour of your day to catch up doesn’t give you any right to make that kind of complaint. Like I said before, your opinion is an ignorant one.
Well maybe you should find a place that serves you better “snippets”. This is a problem with the average American voter. Too “busy” to find the whole picture. That’s exactly what got Obama elected.
It was fine? And where did that get him? Reviled by even those on the right? 30% approval? Not even allowed at the Republican National Convention?
I seriously question your judgment.

No, Sarah didn’t miss an opportunity. As she said in response to an obviously uncomfortable O’Reilly in dealing with the subject: She made a promise to the Special Needs Community that they would always have a voice.. [via her, whatever the circumstances she intends to fulfill that commitment].
The Anchoress was viewing the whole situation from a detached and dispassionate mode. Palin has first person experience with the Special Needs Community, and consequently it is a subject which elicits Sarah’s passion as well as compassion.
Both are quite different response mechanisms, and I think Yoop was spot on in his assessment.
KendraWilder on February 17, 2010 at 1:49 AM
It’s not that you question how she does something, it’s how you make a criticism of her based on ignorance. And that’s no one’s fault but your own.

From her twitter in NOV of 2009:
Not sure I can convince Sen. Lincoln to vote no – but will do everything in my pwr to convince my friends in Arkansas to vote against her.
11:42 AM Nov 21st, 2009 from web
tonight she helped raise $400,000 and gave a barnburing speech to 5,000 people to do just that. Her word is gold.

Am i take away from the outrage that any representation of people with Down Syndrome in cartoons is offensive or is it just because FG decided to mention Palin was the girls mother because nothing about FG’s portrayal of the actual girl is in anyway offensive.
Living in a house with a special needs child (my sister has severe cerebral palsy and attends a special needs school) i happen to have spent a decent period of time around children with DS and they like the girl in the clip are fully functioniing members of society who have a slight learning disability and a distinctive appearance and voice. The girl in the clip has a pushy/strong personality which is completely separate from the disorder.
I can only assume the this is supposedly offensive because they made reference to the fact that Sarah has a child with DS which is true and nothing to be embarassed, ashamed or get defensive about. The clip does not demean or make fun of individuals living with DS in anyway.
TBH this whole furor is dissapointing because you know it’s exactly what McFarlane expected and wanted when he included the Palin reference in the clip.
I’m just bemused by the whole thing really. The Letterman crap was way over the line and she deservedly smacked him down but this was completely innocuous and didn’t require comment at all as far as i’m concerned.
Equanim1ty found on February 17, 2010 at 5:33 AM
Sarah is RIGHT!! The little clip is only part of the bashing that no one else is seeing. I saw a transcript of other parts of the episode that were HORRIBLY insensitve. If it were only about the Former Gov of Alaska, this imagined response would make sense. However, it is not. There are other aspects of the show that were much much worse. Go Sarah!!!
Dan Pet on February 17, 2010 at 6:04 AM
Lefties always mistake outrage for relevance. They can’t rely on creativity because creativity requires a wide-open soul…and their souls are rotten from the hatred and bitterness they harbor at everything and everyone. Bitterness kills creativity. No creativity = no humor.
Grace_is_sufficient on February 17, 2010 at 6:19 AM
Grinding out hatred and personal abuse is just…lazy comedy. It’s like they can’t be bothered to work up something clever.
But that’s family guy for you – it is sometimes very funny, but usually it’s cheap laughs or hit-and-miss humour. The makers apparently think that being offensive is cutting edge and challenging. I mean, it can be, but being offensive loses its edge very quickly if you aren’t clever and original.
I’ll always compare Family Guy to South Park which is rarely (if ever) lazy, consistently hilarious and has a cutting edge based on intelligent and original writing.
Even when politicians are the target, the attack is clever and funny, rather than crass and sloppy.
But fuck – there are plenty of dumb, shallow people out there and family guy will always find an audience. People will always eat Twinkies for that matter.

Am I the only one that is finally sick of O’reilly? His program is based on getting pretty girls as his foils, or on having folks using his show for career advancement or to sell books, just so he can bully them. He hardly ever lets people speak. For most of the interview with Palin he tried to paint her in a box and she did an outstanding job of not complying…she really made him look foolish. Clearly she is about ten times smarter than he is.

People do Palin jokes because of the endless whining (and OUTRAGE) whenever someone does a Palin joke.
At this point, it’s all beyond dumb. The jokes and the reaction.

this is hollyweird, and these types of jokes will be made when the best they can hire is high school freshman to write television shows.
jdsmith0021 on February 17, 2010 at 7:09 AM
Agree, and attempted parody becomes actual self-parody. “Lil’ Bush” is the textbook example.
Yep. In extraordinary circumstances like these, good advice (i.e., “let it go”) becomes bad advice.
Normally letting things go leads to them eventually petering out. But in extraordinary circumstances where this won’t happen, effective response is essential.
In Palin’s case, they are trying these opening attacks hoping they go unchallenged, on the idea that if they do this long enough without being challenged, they will succeed in “mainstreaming” them to the point that they can then be done any time, any place, without consequence. Their near-term goal is not to level any specific accusation but rather to change the vernacular of “open” discourse to the point that it perpetrates the most savage insults imaginable with the most casual ease imaginable, to the point that even criticizing it appears extreme (at least on the surface).
The ultimate goal — an aspirational goal, so its success is not assured thank goodness — is to devalue Sarah Palin not through the piecemeal insults themselves, but by plying them so often, and so casually, without a response that the pattern is established that Sarah Palin is someone who CAN be mocked this way, when no ordinary citizen could be without protest; and is therefore someone who deserves it, or who has so little personal dignity left that she isn’t worth defending from even the very worst, off-color attacks on her family.
In effect, the jokes themselves become the weapon used to make Sarah Palin, literally, “a joke”, something they were unable to achieve on the merits themselves.
Now, even the most gung-ho smear merchant may not think this will succeed all the way, but they may be hoping that if they can get this out in the public domain, the law of averages will kick in and the evidence of her presidential suitability will be “averaged” with the pathetic joke meme in the public mind, and the average will be something less than needed to merit the presidency.
By speaking up early and loudly we resist this idea. And by resisting the idea we thwart their ability to succeed at it. With luck all candidates in 2012 and beyond will be judged on their actual merits and not on the result of a well-orchestrated dehumanization campaign.
Of course, cries of “What’s the matter, you can’t take a joke?” will emanate from the peanut gallery, as well as “If you don’t let it go they win” from well-intended fools, but in the long run those are sucker’s bets. The key always is to resist but be selective in picking targets so that the strategic goals are denied to the perpetrators.

madmonkphotog on February 17, 2010 at 7:47 AM
I think it is an attack on innocence that makes it so outrageous. I agree with you that DS folks are fully functioning members of society but do they often go after people to make fun of them for perceived differences?
Cindy Munford on February 17, 2010 at 7:55 AM
I think this proves Palin has no interest in running for President. No President is going to go on record as criticizing a cartoon. If Bush had to issue a press release everytime a tv show insulted him or his family, he would STILL be issuing them.

I am sure that they would think that saying something explicitly about Trig would be considered unacceptable too.
Palin’s persecution complex seems to be infectious. I defended her alot during the campaign, even when that still, small voice started nagging my conscience about it. But she went over the victimization moon a long time ago.

OK, I will play your game, how was Sarah Palin or Trig Palin attacked?
Is Trig Palin probably the most well known person with downs syndrome in the country since Corky from “Life Goes On”?
Were DS persons portrayed in a negative way in this episode or were they portrayed as being just like anyone else?
How was Trig Palin insulted in this episode?
My feelings towards Palin are immaterial in this instance.
Squid Shark on February 17, 2010 at 8:59 AM
I dont see how that is an insult, except the fact that she has Downs Syndrome. Did McFarlane call her a “retard” or somehow imply that DS persons are somehow less than normal people?
The only people insulted here are the usual suspects. Palin had an opportunity here to turn this around on FG, but she did not take it.

You have done enough. Have you no sense of decency sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?
That was what came to mind when I listened to the interview with O’Reilly. The whole Family Guy episode was sickening.

And if President Obama’s children were portrayed as monkeys in a cartoon? After all, monkeys are cute. Many children love Curious George. “People are just too quick to take offense!”

No, the first was adequate. Your pointless elaboration was actually b*tchier. I attended public high school in WV, and The Wasteland was part of our assigned reading.
This is the problem with leftists. Besides getting caught up in the passion of “the sky is falling” imaginary peccadilloes and the cheap thrills that substitute actual attachments to human beings, they also underestimate their opponents and rely on flimsy stereotypes.
That also explains why they have “enough hours in the day” for Family Guy, a show that has never been funny.

For the record, I felt Palin’s response was dignified and impressively compassionate, even uncharacteristically meek for her, which encourages me that she is evolving as a leader and politician. This issue needed to be addressed, and I am grateful that she did. Good interview overall.

Glad I’m not the only one who has had it up to here with “exit questions” and “heartaches” and double standards.

Sometimes men just has to forget that their mothers raised them to be a gentleman. There comes the time when it’s more prudent to ruffle some feathers, kick some a$$, or take names for the tombstones.

There comes a time when forebearance ceases to be a virtue – Edmund Burke
I fully believe that George felt that in his current environment whatever was said would be more ammo for a rabid media
there was no right answer
furthermore he was well aware of the fact that I. Other places in the world Americans were being shot at and if the more he bore, the less they did and we all know that they weren’t off limits
George is a good man

Excellent spot on analysis.

Charles Krauthammer said: “If Bayh Wants To Be President, Resigning Is Smart.”
Sarah Palin resigned and she’s a quitter. Evan Bayh resigned and he’s smart. Sexist. Evan Bayh had no reason to resign except fear of losing an election. Sarah Palin resigned to save Alaska’s and her family’s finances from being eaten up by legal fees caused by ankle-biters.
Yet, she’s the “quitter.”
Bayh quits and can run for the presidency. Palin quits and that puts her outside the pale because nobody loves a quitter. Yet, Evan Bayh, says Krauthammer (who demanded Palin leave the room before he parroted her points) is “smart.”
Just goes to show you, even Conservatives are biased against Conservatives … when their tails are split different.

Oh, the source on Bayh the “smart” quitter: http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2010/02/16/krauthammer_if_bayh_wants_to_be_president_resigning_is_smart.html.

Depends on the context. In this case, the mere mention is cause for offense.

Hmmmmm.
“This Anchoress has got to be kidding right? The DS girl presented was nasty and pushy which is not a flattering picture of her and is not like any DS child I have ever encountered… She wants Sarah to praise that?”
Amen! What little I watched, frankly it wasn’t just a running insult … it was incredibly boring, the more awful was the depiction of the girl.
memomachine on February 17, 2010 at 10:38 AM
Since you didnt watch the whole thing, you didnt get the punchline, which is that DS people are just like everyone else.

I love how Palinistas turn into the identity politics whores when is suits them.
Hypocrites.

Sorry about getting carried away, though, but that kind of crap makes my blood boil like a cheap, Russian space suit.

Sorry about the anger boiling over; I usually try confining that to my own blog!
