Boxer in trouble in California

posted at 2:55 pm on February 16, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Usually, when an incumbent can’t get above 50% in a poll, holding the seat begins to look like a long shot.  In California, Rasmussen’s latest poll shows that Boxer can’t get above 47% against any of the three Republicans vying for the nomination to run against her.  Two of them manage to get within the margin of error in the poll:

For the second month in a row, incumbent Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer is in surprisingly tight races with three potential Republican challengers in California.

Most troubling for Boxer in the latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of likely voters in the state is her continuing inability to cross the 50% threshold against any of the GOP hopefuls. Incumbents who capture less than 50% of the vote at this stage of the campaign are considered vulnerable. …

Boxer leads former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina 46% to 42%, virtually unchanged from January. Another seven percent (7%) would vote for some other candidate, while five percent (5%) are undecided. Boxer led Fiorina by nine points in November and 10 points in September.

The incumbent also holds a four-point lead over former Congressman Tom Campbell, 45% to 41%. Four percent (4%) like another candidate, and 10% are undecided. Boxer held the same lead over Campbell, just after he joined the race in January.

Andrew Malcolm wonders whether the dump-Democrats tidal wave can reach California:

For a Democrat in a Democrat state that gave Barack Obama 61% of its votes in 2008 (and still likes him more than many other places) to be mired in the mid-40′s is a sign of real trouble. This is especially so given the fact that disgruntled voters gave Democrats control of the House, Senate and White House in 2008, expecting something to happen beyond another[C]ongressional payraise. Voters appear to be looking at a the stubborn ineffectiveness of the much-vaunted economic stimulation bill, continued high unemployment and waning Obama approval. It’s not like they don’t know Boxer after all her years in the state’s public life. To help with the warmth of money, Boxer will have Al Gore headline a fundraiser for her next weekend.

Yes, sure, incumbents retain huge powers and money advantages over challengers and it’s a long time until November, when the five-term ex-representative Boxer will turn 70. But nationally, indications are growing that 2010 could be a tidal wave election beyond the usual midterm swing with voters believing in a different kind of change to believe in.

Is it possible they could dump out a Democrat even in California?

Looking at the internals of the poll, it’s possible — but it really depends on turnout.  Without Obama at the top of the ticket, Democrats can’t count on the kind of flood-the-zone turnout they got in 2008.  There will be a battle to replace Arnold Schwarzenegger as governor, but none of the candidates have the candlepower to provoke a massive turnout on their own.

Throughout the rest of the country, independents have fueled a backlash against Democrats.  That’s not so much the case in California.  Each of the Republicans edges Boxer in unaffiliated voters, but not by much.  Fiorina does best at 45/40, Campbell slightly less well at 42/38, while DeVore gets 41/40.  Those aren’t numbers among likely voters that portend a seat change, at least not at the moment.  However, her favorability among independents is well under water, at 45/51, never a good sign for an incumbent, and more strongly disfavor her than strongly support her, 30/39.

Another factor in Boxer’s favor: Obama is still popular among Californians, more so than nationally.  Rasmussen puts his approval rating at a health 58% in the Golden State, with only 41% disapproving.  He gets the exact same split among independents, which tends to argue that (a) Boxer is really seen as extreme and/or ineffective, and (b) the reaction to the Obama agenda seen in other states won’t be as much of a factor in California.

The real wild card may be instead the state-level anti-incumbent fervor.  The state is mired in financial meltdown, and Democratic control of the state legislature makes them particularly vulnerable to a big anti-Democrat turnout.  Rasmussen didn’t poll on legislative elections, but that could become a factor in November, especially after the budget process this summer.   Without that, though, don’t get your hopes up for a Republican takeover quite yet.

Exactly.

Having lived out there during the “good days” when the big issue was rolling blackouts by Gray Davis, all I can say is any Californian that votes anybody back into office at any level is, to use the words of the Obama administration, an effing R*tard beyond compare. The state is so mired in debt from years of mis-management by a Dem controlled legislature and morons like the Governator that nobody should be keeping their jobs.

highhopes on February 16, 2010 at 3:11 PM

Kinda depends on when California becomes a failed state; before the election or after.

Kinda depends on when civil insurrection and civil war breaks out in New Jersey when the unions take to the streets.

Wouldn’t that be sumthin? Unions go out on strike, the governor shuts down state government, puts non essential government employees on indefinite layoff. How would they sign up for unemployment if the unemployment office is closed and all the employees there are laid off?

Could be fun.

From now until the election, the GOP needs to run the committee-hearing clip of Boxer talking down to the head of the Black Chamber of Commerce, which prompted him (Mr. Alford) to shove it right back in her face.

It was a great smackdown. Boxer looked horrible.

BuckeyeSam on February 16, 2010 at 3:29 PM

JiangxiDad – we kinda, sorta thought we were going to get a start on that with Arnold.

But he completely blew the ballot initiatives by trying for everything at once, then rolled over and ended up being, for all intents and purposes, an enviroloony but fiscally moderate Democrate.

Most of the GOP in California wants to get rid of Arnold almost as much as we want to get rid of Boxer.

The idea of Jerry Brown (California’s own Jimmy Carter) getting another run at the governor’s office is a little like eating a bad burrito, managing to get it out of your body, then having someone try to shove the excretions back down your throat. I have no doubt he’d be even worse this time ’round.

viviliberoomuori on February 16, 2010 at 3:36 PM

I certainly hope this woman is voted out. She’s stayed beyond her welcome in my opinion. But it all rides with the voters of California. Do they want more of this tax,and spend for their state, and country, or do they want a renewed vigor that only good change can bring? Such as lower taxes on all fronts, businesses coming back, jobs with it, and new, and better prosperity?

The entitlement mentality that grows in this country needs to stop. We need to re-educate, and show people a better way, where everyone has opportunity, and freedoms…and not mandates, taxes, and restrictions on our lives.

Boxer is an embarrassment to California. I can say that without hesitation because I live there, however unwillingly. I feel completely unrepresented, except for my House member, who is a Republican. And since the Rs are in the minority in the House, I’m pretty much without any representation in Washington.

I’ve called her offices repeatedly to protest the “health” bill and I could hear the scorn in the voices of her assistants who answer the phone.

Boxer has no concern for the little people. Well, this “little person” will be at the voting booth in November to do my best to vote her ample fanny out of the Senate. She isn’t qualified to represent a city dump, much less California. (No jokes about the equivalence, please.)

Honestly, the situation in CA is that people just aren’t that political. The ones who are are simply hard-core Leftie nut jobs. Californians tolerate them because they’re too busy surfing, hiking, skiing, going to the gym and working at their jobs to pay them any serious mind. On top of that, the Republican Party is a freaking joke of an establishment deal were the rich RINOs have a strangle hold on the Party make up. I support the Ace of Spades option for California but there’s just not enough people who care about politics to get involved and change it. So we end up with the same lame and tired people we’ve had. The establishment tired to convince us that Arnold was a true Conservative and would ‘teach’ the left nutjobs activist in Hollywood what Conservationism is really about. Wasn’t ever gonna happen. And his marrying Maria should have give people the true clue.

California voted for Reagan, Deukmajian, and Wilson. It’s not a Democrat Governor strong hold. It’s not like NJ, or MA where it happens infrequently. Which should show the people outside just how they Democrats carved their Districts so conveniently. I don’t like the option but their better than anything the Left is putting up. So, even though I know they won’t be the kind of Republican I want, I’ll STILL vote for Fiorna and Whitman. I believe they are the ones that have the potential to win and make a bit of difference.

“The real wild card may be instead the state-level anti-incumbent fervor. The state is mired in financial meltdown, and Democratic control of the state legislature makes them particularly vulnerable to a big anti-Democrat turnout.”

We did the right thing on traditional marriage, twice but that is only because the black vote is opposed to gay marriage and they crossed party lines to preserve marriage.

The state legislature holds a firm grip on power here and the L.A. dems usually get their people out, providing buses if necessary.

Maybe this time is different, Boxer has really stunk up her seat with the cap-n-tax, health scare and the “call me senator” messes.

The fact it could be close gives me hope but we have a propensity to hire the least common denominator, we always do.

Look I know we are all the generation of Hollywoodites, raised with flair and dramatic and CGI, so much so we EXPECT that out of our leaders BUT I have to say this (as an actress!): I’d rather have someone less thrilling up the leg but with an understanding of the Constitution, et al. than someone who can use a teleprompter well but has the ethical, moral, and political acumen of a sea scallop. I’m no longer a resident of California. I was a California “democrap” before I married a military officer and began traveling the world. I saw the error of those ways, repented, and changed stripes. I still have family down there and recently returned from an extended stay. California is LOSING population by the droves. Businesses are leaving and taking jobs with them. My family (all “democraps”) were bemoaning that fact. I chimed in with: “Well, if the state didn’t tax the crap out of businesses and actually revamped its tax, transportation, and education structures you might keep business here!!” It was really quiet in that kitchen. I hope Boxer has her rank pulled off her shoulders, her uniform ripped, and her sword broken over the knees of Californians in the next election. That old soldier needs to fade away–in SPADES! As far as DeVore is concerned, if I still lived in CA I’d vote for him. The others just look too well rehearsed to be candidates “of the people by the people and for the people”. I live and work in fantasy land. I want someone real to govern.

Starting to sound like the only Dem Senators who aren’t in trouble are BOTH of New York’s.

Yeah, we’re pretty pathetic.

58% think Obambi is doing well. What the heck is wrong with that state?? I hope Carly gets the nom; if she wins, it’ll be by 1-3%. Campbell is a fiscal liberal.

TimTebowSavesAmerica on February 16, 2010 at 3:15 PM

Actually 75% of the ones who think 0 is doing well are probably on welfare. And if the Fiorina wins we just as well leave Boxers in office. Chuck DeVore is the only change from the current status quo. Here’s hoping he wins.
