Video: “Family Guy” makes fun of Palin’s son, sort of

posted at 6:06 pm on February 15, 2010 by Allahpundit

Not the first time they’ve taken a nasty shot at her. Remember the episode that aired just before the election when Stewie found a McCain/Palin button on his Nazi uniform?

Serious question: Does this even qualify as a joke? There’s no punchline per se; the humor, such as it is, lies in knowing that (a) the character has Down’s syndrome, (b) Palin’s son also has Down’s, and (c) Palin is a former governor of Alaska. The goof, I guess, is that … all Alaska governors have kids with Down’s? Or that all of Palin’s kids have Down’s? (They don’t.) Whichever it is, consider this a useful illustration of the notorious laziness of the FG writing staff, beautifully mocked by “South Park” a few years ago. Looks like the manatees only delivered one ball for this joke.

Blowback

All I want to know is when the FG episode with Rush Limbaugh is going to air. I remember him mentioning that he went out to LA to record the voice work…

I saw it on the Star Wars spoof, not sure if he’s doing more. That was actually pretty funny.

I’ll still take King of the Hill.

reaganaut on February 16, 2010 at 12:17 AM

Thus, this is his way of telling those families with children a big, fat round of “F@$#$ You!” Tells you a whole lot about him, or doesn’t it?

Since Family Guy was started in the late 90′s I think you are full of s&&^*t

Palin Responds

She knows when to come out swinging, and when to appeal to our better selves. I don’t need a leader who knows every detail of every policy matter off the top of their head. I want one who knows the best thing to do when presented a situation. Palin has shown consistently she knows what to do whatever is thrown at her – she may not make a great law professor, but I’ll take her as CIC.

Used to be a big fan of this show.

…..Between the aforementioned laziness, and the increasingly bitter and unfunny anti-Bush/Republican “jokes,” I grew out of it.

The McCain/Palin button on the Nazi was the last straw for me.

Hawkins1701 on February 16, 2010 at 1:52 AM

I’m sorry this is NOT funny. My sister-in-law has special needs and I feel we are blessed to have such an innocent sweet soul in our family. She’s 45 but mentally 12 and all she talks about is Bon Jovi, which gets old FAST after 17 years, but I would not trade her for the world. I love seeing her smile and doing things to make her smile, even if it means having to sit through a Bon Jovi concert and hear his lib hate spews. It makes her happy so I do it.

Stupid show written and designed for one thing only and that’s to destroy the American family.

long_cat on February 16, 2010 at 3:44 AM

PIT-I-FUL! Palin has responded on Facebook, or rather Bristol has.

conservnut on February 16, 2010 at 6:45 AM

I mean this was pointless.

I’ll play devil’s advocate. It’s obvious the girl in that episode wore the pants in that relationship. And maybe that was there point, special needs people can be in control. Which is OK; if that’s what they were trying to do.

But them bringing up Sarah wasn’t even funny. There was no point to it. It wasn’t part of the bit at all. It was just there. It’s obvious it was some type of swipe because it served no other purpose. But it wasn’t even a funny swipe. It was just pitiful. It laid there and died.

I still watch Family Guy sometimes because I’m the type who likes random humor- and they have ALOT of that. I started to fall out of “like” with that show over Quagmire. At first he was just a horny dude, but then he morphed into this crazed oversexed pedophile who kept Chinese women locked in his garage. (I’m not kidding, that was in a episode.) They tend to have ALOT of aggressive scenes that are anti woman, for example when they mocked rape scenes or domestic violence. That’s really not funny. And I’m trying to figure out who decided they were.

I’ll probably still catch it every now and then on Hulu, but I’m not wasting my time tuning in.

I’m with you – what was the joke, exactly? Other than “ha ha I managed to bring up Sarah Palin’s kid – your turn now”?

RD on February 16, 2010 at 8:05 AM

Family Guy was great when lampooning cultural schtick and materialism, etc., but these people forgot that many of their viewers don’t share their political philosophy.

There was no reason to do this. It was just gratuitous, like Colbert’s bash.

victor82 on February 16, 2010 at 8:53 AM

The show hasn’t been funny since it came back from having been canceled.

I used to record it but haven’t since a DVR mess up and don’t miss it at all.

Remember when Cartoons were for Children?

portlandon on February 15, 2010 at 6:38 PM

I dunno about that, I remember “The Flintstones” had a lot of humor in it that went over the kids’ heads but the adults understood. It was on Friday night at prime time if I remember correctly. Our whole family watched it.

This satire is crap and offensive

Rush’s satire is crap and offensive

Palin only has a problem with Family Guy’s

Why is that?

Dave Rywall on February 16, 2010 at 1:41 PM

What, Lassie? Seth’s stuck in the dry well? Of suck?

*bark, bark*

Dave Rywall on February 16, 2010 at 1:41 PM

She called out Rush and didn’t even call out Family Guy, letting her daughter do it for her on a Facebook post no less.

But I don’t care what Palin does or thinks here. The joke wasn’t even offensive. It was just stupid and lazy. Really, the show has sucked so bad since it came back.

If you have to try to be edgy, you’re not.

Esthier on February 16, 2010 at 2:21 PM

She excused Rush, saying it was satire.
That is not calling him out on it.

Dave Rywall on February 16, 2010 at 2:36 PM

She said something about it being crude and inappropriate.

But again, she didn’t even say anything about this one. She was harder on Rush than she’s being on Seth.

If that’s your whole problem though, it’s not hard to understand a double standard being applied to people you know don’t hate you verses one applied to those who’ve put your campaign button on Nazi uniforms.

There are plenty of things I don’t like being teased about, but I’m more likely to be alright with it (or at least pretend to) if a friend is doing the teasing, whereas I might get angry and lash out at someone who is barely an acquaintance, let alone someone who doesn’t like me.

But again, I don’t care what Palin did here. I just think the show has gotten stupid.

BTW – McFarlane has been quite candid about that in the past. He has NO LOVE for anyone who voted for Bush in 2004. (That means people like my husband and I, also parents.)

That’s the company you keep there. Jerk!

I know you’re right about how Seth feels about Bush voters, but Squid is also right. The show started when Clinton was president.

However, the show was canceled in 2003 and returned in 2005 with an obvious change in tone. That could be what he meant in the quote you reference.

Esthier on February 16, 2010 at 3:34 PM

It was just a sad attempt to slam on the Palins. To that I say FAIL!
