Too good to check: No-name lefty candidate may sneak in as Dems’ Indiana Senate nominee
posted at 5:29 pm on February 15, 2010 by Allahpundit
Remember that last-minute filing deadline that Ed talked about this morning, how Indiana Democrats would be forced to go through a caucus process because no one qualified for the ballot in time? Well, “no one” is on the verge of becoming someone.
Red State’s got the right idea. She claims she needs 500 signatures by tomorrow, especially from the 8th District, although she’d feel safer with 1,000. If you’re a conservative Hoosier and you get a knock on the door, you know what to do.
It would be something close to a nightmare scenario for Democrats: were [Tamyra] D’Ippolito to qualify for the ballot, she would be the likely nominee and the party would be left to face the GOP with a political neophyte who said she is running in part to take on a party establishment she said practices “sexism with a big S.”
It’s precisely what Bayh had hoped to avoid. By disclosing his retirement one day before the filing deadline, the idea was that no Democrat would qualify for the primary ballot and the party’s state central committee could tap their favored candidate…
“This would be a complete and unmitigated disaster,” said a leading Democrat in the state. “We’d be up sh—’s creek.”…
She said she was committed to the race in part because she was sick of the male-dominated Democratic Party in the state.
“It’s very much an old boys club in Indiana and I’m out to break it,” she said.
She tells TPM that the state party is working against her, which is undoubtedly true and will be even truer now. But don’t lose hope. Remember, Harry Reid initially vowed to block Roland Burris’s appointment by Blagojevich until the race card was dutifully played by Burris’s supporters, leading to the inevitable reversal in the name of diversity. Sounds like D’Ippolito’s already got her own identity-politics ducks in a row, so if anything underhanded is tried to disqualify her, this is going to turn into one glorious clusterfark. Cross them fingers.
Here’s her campaign Facebook page. She says she’ll be collecting signatures tonight at someplace called Ragazzi’s. Hop to it, Hot Air Indianans!

I don’t see how her getting in would be an unmitigated disaster.
It might be for us.
I’d much rather allow the party apparatus to pick their candidate of choice. Because they are out of touch and wouldn’t pick a good one.
If this woman gets grassroots support she has a chance against anyone we run.

The Democrats will find a judge to get them out of this mess. They always do.
Mark1971 on February 15, 2010 at 5:43 PM
I’m not complaining but Bayh’s strategy of throwing this to a caucus process was a bit too clever by half. He didn’t set up the conditions where the Indiana kingmakers could engineer a replacement (in much the same way Scuzafava won the GOP nomination in NY-23). Instead, he ensured chaos. IMO, he will be hurt when the Indiana Dems implode by this last minute skittering.

Depends on her grasp of the issues and mindset. If she’s a one trick pony(bad wording), running just to overcome alleged sexism in the Democrat Party doesn’t sound like a winner. Could be highly entertaining.
a capella on February 15, 2010 at 5:48 PM
This happened back in 2001.
No party would officially have Majority status, and they would share equal spots on committees, and they both would lead procedures on the floor. But Democrats would retain a slight advantage due to Biden’s vote (just like Republicans retained a light advantage due to Cheney in 2001).

Counting or not counting the rock bands that want to friend everybody?
Seriously, even if successful, this woman does not have the statewide organization to run for Senate unless each and every one of those 173 fans are chairs of local Democrat party organizations. The best bet for the Dems is to trot out an old politician with a few miles on them but statewide name recognition.

If I read correctly elsewhere, she needs signatures from a particular district of Indiana. That should be checked before people in the wrong district start participating in C-H-A-O-S.
Sue on February 15, 2010 at 5:50 PM
Make fun all you want. I’d sign this woman’s petition in a minute. The party leaders, both parties, play this process like it’s their own personal game. This woman deserves her shot, period.

Also, she writes a blurb about how we need more funding for education. The woman needs to take an English class, herself. I couldn’t comment on her page, but I would have….I guess I have to become a ‘fan’ to do so.

RealMc on February 15, 2010 at 5:52 PM
Would it actually be a 50-50 split?
Lieberman is an Independent.
I know he caucuses with the Dems. However, the numbers would be as follows:
Republicans – 50
Democrats – 49
Independents – 1
That looks to me like Republicans should have the majority.
I’m not entirely sure I want Reps to be the majority though. If they were good senators and did a good job of pushing for smaller government, perhaps. If they’re just going to let the Dems walk all over them and be Reps by spending not quite as much as dems would have, I might pass.
There is always the Supreme Court to think of though. Assuming the Reps would have the balls to oppose a more radical choice by Obama.

That’s exactly who Tamyra D’Ippolito is. Even less qualified than the filthy lying coward in the White House as she apparently has done nothing but run a combination bar & art gallery in Bloomington. But she was collecting signatures when everybody was laughing at her dark horse status as the liberal challenger to Bayh. It will be interesting to see where things stand as of the filing deadline.

thebrokenrattle on February 15, 2010 at 6:00 PM
The Republicans, IMO, shouldn’t be shooting for outright majority status. Just enough sure votes to gum up the works. Obama and the Dems need to own Congress and all the failures brought about by this administration. We do not need to give them an easy enemy to triangulate their own failures against. The House is another matter entirely and if majority status is possible it should be reached.
In the meantime, it is fun to speculate on how the filthy lying coward in the White House is going to “govern” when he doesn’t have the Congress locked by partisanship. Will he become less bombastic or will he throw even more public temper tantrums when he doesn’t get his way? My guess is the latter.
highhopes on February 15, 2010 at 6:00 PM
It would be, on highly unlikely risk of us taking a lot of seats this year:
Republican – 50
Democrats – 48
Independents – 2
Lieberman and Sanders, while Independent, are considered part of the Democrat caucus.
Now that’s an interesting question because there were no independents in the 2001 Senate when it was tied. I think they’d go by caucus rather than party status. But if it comes down to the above, I see Lieberman jumping parties and giving Republicans majority status.
Enoxo on February 15, 2010 at 6:00 PM
