Quotes of the day

posted at 10:30 pm on February 15, 2010 by Allahpundit

“Most [scientists] don’t see a contradiction between a warming world and lots of snow. That includes Kevin Trenberth, a prominent climate scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Colorado.

“‘The fact that the oceans are warmer now than they were, say, 30 years ago means there’s about on average 4 percent more water vapor lurking around over the oceans than there was, say, in the 1970s,’ he says…

“‘So one of the consequences of a warming ocean near a coastline like the East Coast and Washington, D.C., for instance, is that you can get dumped on with more snow partly as a consequence of global warming,’ he says…

“‘Because if it’s cold enough to snow, you will get snow,’ Masters says. ‘We still have winter even if temperatures have warmed on average, oh, about 1 degree Fahrenheit over the past 100 years.’”

***
RUSH:… So the temperatures are not warmer, causing all of this snow, ladies and gentlemen. And it’s hilarious for me to watch all this. Global warming, they say, causes more snow, right? Well, then global cooling would cause less snow? I mean, different ways of saying the same thing, right? As one who is possessed with a tremendous amount of logic and critical thinking capability that would have to be true. But when there is less snow, the alarmists say that’s because of global warming. When there is more snow, they say it’s because of global warming. Now, you cannot have it both ways, otherwise you’re contradicting yourself and proving that all you are is on a political mission. Now, we’ve heard from all the experts, all the members of Congress, all the experts in the media telling us that these record snowfalls are just proof of global warming. Well, let’s go back to the audio sound bites. We have about seven of them here. March 21st, 2002, from the Senate floor. Not enough snow was falling back then and Robert Byrd said this proved global warming.

BYRD 2002: We need a climate change strategy badly. Look at the kind of winter we’ve had here in Washington. One snow, three inches? What can we expect for the spring and summer seasons? What’s going to happen to our crops, our livestock, our economy? This is serious. I’ve lived a long time, 84 years. Something’s going wrong out there. I don’t need a scientist to tell me that. We had better do something about it.

RUSH: You gotta listen to this, folks. These are Democrats complaining global warming proved by no snow. No snow in Washington, 2002, proves global warming. Yesterday and the day before, all of this snow in Washington proves global warming. They both can’t be right. Here’s Barbara Boxer, October 29th, 2007, on the Senate floor.

Let’s do a post-mortem on global warming.

Which killed it: the faulty science, the insane wealth transfer solution, both, or neither?

I’d say the solution alerted the opposition to the danger, which allowed it to withstand the science. Then, unexpectedly, the science fell to pieces. So, I conclude that both contributed but not at the same time.

Discuss.

I’m over here in Hillsboro and I could really go for some global warming right about now. I’m getting sick of walking the quarter mile down my driveway to my car because of the record snowfall. Just when we finally got a path that my car could pass over, it snowed another half a foot. And then another half a foot today.

I’m just surprised that the Warmers haven’t claimed the record snowfalls as a victory in their pursuit.

rmel80 on February 16, 2010 at 2:39 AM

Kevin Trenberth, a prominent climate scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Colorado.

Obviously there’s “lake effect” or “ocean effect” snow here in Colorado.
The law of diffusions states that things move from high concentration to low concentration, so here in teh high plains desert, we get dumped on when it gets hot. Just like the snow in Arizona.

News Flash from Berkley…

Climate change threatens the redwoods!!!!

http://news.yahoo.com/s/livescience/lessfogincaliforniacouldstressredwoods

Now when someone writes something like this:
————————–
“Climate models have predicted that with the warming caused by the buildup of greenhouse gases in Earth’s atmosphere, California’s coastal fog would increase as a result of changing atmosphere and ocean circulation patterns.

But weather records that just recently became available have shown the opposite trend of a significant decrease in fog over the past 100 years.”
————————–
Wow!
Hmmm… Who should we trust? Fake “Climate Models” or the actual recordings of data?

Well of course the little blurb at the end should catch your eye:

—————————
“The work was supported by the Save the Redwoods League and the Berkeley Atmospheric Sciences Center.”

The sad thing about this is that real science of all kinds will be the real loser.

gstrickler on February 16, 2010 at 3:15 AM

It is comical that they cling to data that has been disproved or shown to be biased to show warming by those keeping the records. For example the once urban data sites now sit in city environments next to air conditioning units or incinerators or the one in Maryland that was move down to a lower altitude but the data was accepted as the same in its old location, or the ignoring of the Russian data because it conflicted with data they had carefully cherry picked to show global warming and insured anyone who said otherwise was silenced or made out to incompetent.

As for the oceans. Those boyes that were sunk down 20 meters to take the readings; not all were functioning correctly. When the data was adjusted to take in account the innacuracy of the data; the new corrected data shows the oceans cooling. So these deluted and frantic to be right, scientist of questional definition, that are saying the oceans are warming, which is causing more mositure at the surface, have a problem. Of course there is the fact that even they have to admit that the earth has not warmed up since 1995. uh oh, that means the air is cooler and cooler air holds less moisture. They could blame it on the southern hemisphere, but it is not co-operating any better than the northren hemisphere. Maybe that is because the earth is not really round, its more pear shaped with the southern half having less area to be warmed by the sun. That is something they never mention. That does bring up the problem with the sun as well.

History is another problem. They thought they had that worked out by smoothing out the incovient bumps that show more recent history warming periods. There is the problem is the well documented fact that the vikings used to sail to America. They could do it because the earth was warmer then. I guess the particals form all those campfires of humanity at the time were trapping all that heat from the sun making us a green house. Then the “Little Ice Age” happen and the vikings could not endure the cold of the trip or the freezing of Greenland. That was beause all those camp fires were putting particals in the air that blocked the suns heat. That was not the worse of it. Thousand of years before all those gas belching masterdons were roaming the earth creating all that CO2. Look what that did. We had glaciers “Two miles high” gouging out the great lakes. /s

I guess they do not get it that mans .02 contribution to the “green house gases” is not going to change the ever changing climate of our world. How often have the pointed out that the fallen leaves in forest release CO2, tons of it if fact. Those green trees do take CO2 in during the day, but what happens at night? They do not go to sleep. They take water and nutirents from the soil and “gasp”, release CO2 into the air.

The real problem money, power and communism. What! communism?? If you understand their desires from their beginning you will see it, but more recently, read a copy of the 1997 Communist Party USA platform, partciuliarly the parts on how they will destroy the large corportations with anti pollution (green) laws and replace them with smaller locally state owned and operated companies. If you are wondering why health care is such a conncern for the socialist/communist, from their own mouths, it is the only way that they can sieze power in the United States. Healthcare is the vehical for progressive change (the less upsetting name they now use in place of communist), not the primary concern. If you want to know why Obama is so important to them and why healthcare is so important to him, compare his political platform to the Communist Party USA platform. There is little difference. His job is to deliver the shot in the back of the head to America, then his job is done and what he does after that does not really matter.

Let’s do a post-mortem on global warming.

Which killed it: the faulty science, the insane wealth transfer solution, both, or neither?

Truth. And the means to communicate it.

It’s the same thing that is killing the main-stream media. The proliferation of alternative information sources, particularly cable news, talk radio and the internet. Can you imagine if this scam had been conceived and perpetrated on the American people back in the day when there was really only ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, and the NYT and Washington Post?

It’s not just the AGW scam that is dead. The whole liberal (progressive) paradigm is dying because the old media can no longer control the conversation, silence the critics, and shape the debate.

Aslans Girl on February 16, 2010 at 7:14 AM

Have you picked up on the latest buzzword shift by the eco-Marxists?

Ice age didn’t work so they shifted to global warming, but that got shot down, so they tried co-opting any weather patterns as proof of their political hoax by calling it climate change - in effect, having it both ways, but now even the simple minded (who they ‘ve been fooling) recognize cold and snow in florida etc is not really Global warming and it’s been getting colder for a long time.

Now we have (get ready) “climate cycles” these will cover their lying butts well, as it can be warm or cold for years and they will just claim “it’s just a climate cycle” caused by man’s use of energy. They are free from the nasty business of prediction. It’s too embarassing anyway.

All this has but one purpose -to stop Capitalism. To humble a nation that has embarassed their ill-productive socialism (why work hard when you’ll get no more for it?)

So expect the words “Climate cycles” to be justfing what they must do, because they’ve spent billions of dollars (ours)and decades in preparation for this weapon and they won’t lay it down without a battle.

It wasn’t just the Daley family. It goes back to Chicago’s founding. Read “Devil in the White City” and do a little research.

On a side note, back in the late 80′s I was doing a $25K job at Eddie V’s house. The project took 10 days. Every day, one of Fast Eddie’s henchmen (staff) handed me an envelope that I took to my boss. Inside, $2,500.00 cash. Not bad for an alderman.

I think that the agenda tipped many of us off to the likelyhood that science was likely made up. It took an extraordinary collusion amongst junk scientists and the news media to keep the lid on it as long as they did.

It’s amazing that they were able to cover up the lack of warming for 15 years. Not amazing, SCARY. It shows you how powerful the left wing coverup machine is, and it makes me wonder what else has been covered up.

As Rush has said, it’s time for REAL scientists to step up to the plate and denounce these people, or risk their whole profession losing all credibility with them.

Johnnyreb on February 16, 2010 at 7:21 AM

Which reminds me of the reason why R-12 (freon) was banned (it was what was causing the “ozone hole” so the junk scientists claimed). It was banned ultimately because the patent ran out (thus allowing anyone to manufacture it royalty free) and the company that produced it happened to have a (newly patented) replacement formula, R-134…

Always follow the money. Contrary to popular belief, “corporatism” or collusion between big business and government is mostly a product of the left. Hence, GE and the democrat party.

Ironically I’ve used CFL bulbs for many years before the hysteria, and I can tell you that GE makes the absolute CRAPPIEST ones. They are low quality, prone to breaking easily and don’t produce natural light. Sylvania CFLs are much better…

So we now know the science is settled on the explosive facts that the weather changes from season to season and that that large ball of fire in the center of the solar system is the primary factor.

We must also acknowledge that the watermelon movement in the current “climate” are the same one’s from the sixties that were centrally controlled by the Soviet Politic.

These two items are not the factors that will do us in for good but mere distractions so that we ignore the illegal income tax and the Federal Reserve Bank entity that continues to erode the last obstacle to statism, the middle class.

Since he tried to screw all of us with polar bears…he should be sewn into a female pheromone saturated polar bear suit garnished with a collar of dangling raw salmon and dropped in the furthest reaches of the Greenland arctic wilderness during the height of polar bear mating season. His Oscar, Emmy, and Nobel Prize will be melted down into rudimentary survival tools (fish hook, dull knife, and a crude pot). He will then have his choice of a bonus item…either a flint for fire, or a bicycle with no seat for speedier travels.

Should he survive, he will have the option of living out his days working in an incandescent light bulb factory for below minimum wage, or work in the gift shop of the Al Gore Foundation For Scientists Who Can’t Do Science Good and Want To Learn To Do Other Stuff Good Too, which his fortune and assets were seized to fund along with healthy donations to other charities and petroleum engineering colleges around the country.

Kissmygrits on February 16, 2010 at 10:03 AM

Only a liberal minds is deluded sufficiently (as Hitler’s was) to think it can control something that has existed far longer than they have.

Mother Nature and science have been balancing themselves quite well since the beginning of time. They will always find a means to balance the impacts of mankind as a whole.

One the best examples of this balancing act is the Ozone Hole. Common liberal thinking is that humans have caused it to increase. Any further increases in its size will cause mankind to be sucked out into outer space, Untrue.

The Ozone is a portion of the atmosphere that encompass the earth filtering out bad stuff (excess UV, radiation, etc.) from reaching the earths surface, and keeping the gases and other substances beneficial to support life on this planet, in.

The Ozone Hole expansion and contraction is the means to maintain the earths balance. The atmosphere, is like a giant balloon surrounding the earth, and the Ozone Hole is that portion of the balloon that allows the good stuff in and allows the bad stuff out. The hole expands and contracts to balance the inner and outer forces. Nothing, mankind can do will change that balance if we did nothing Mother Nature would do just fine.

Our actions to restrict or increase the level of activity disproportionally weakens its elasticity decreasing its ability to react properly taking Mother Nature a bit longer to recover. But, it will recover just understand the concpt of balance.

Sultry Beauty on February 16, 2010 at 11:53 AM

In fairness to the issue, there isn’t a contradiction between more snow and a warming world. For the record, I think the climate change movement is concoted and generally a ploy for politicos to gain power by subverting science. But more snow is entirely possible with a warming world.

A warmer world will have two things.

1. Less wind.
2. More precipitation.

There’s more to it then that but those are two obvious results in weather. So for example, Al Gore’s “more hurricanes in a warmer world” argument is patiently bogus to anyone that knows anything about weather. Wind is driven by pressure differentials which are created by temperature differentials. Basically wind is just hot and cold air mixing to even out. Global warming theoretically should homogenize global temperature which means less of a differential, less energy in the weather system, and less wind. An example of this effect can be seen on Venus. The TOP surface wind speed on Venus is about 1 mile per hour. On earth the AVERAGE surface wind speed is about 25 miles per hour. Global warming means less wind.

It also means you’re less likely to see deserts then you are jungles. By the same token you could see heavier snow storms not that I think these storms argue for or against GW. We know the politicos brought this on themselves by claiming every winter and every summer was proof of GW. So a little turn about is fair… but we shouldn’t lose perspective lest we fall into the same trap.

To be the bigger people here we have to focus on the science and to argue the politics… not focus on the politics to argue the science.

I’m trying to decide if you are being facetious, or if you really this bad at basic science.

The only thing ozone does is block certain (not all) frequencies of UV radiation. It is also a fairly good greenhouse gas, but that’s a story for another day.

It doesn’t keep stuff in, good or bad.

The ozone hole is nothing more than a place in the atmosphere where the ozone concentration is lower than the rest of the atmosphere. It comes from the fact that the polar circulations serve to isolate the polar air mass during the local winter, and the sun don’t shine on the poles during the winter.

Even scarier if that post was reviewed by his/her peers.

Now if we could just get ride of the ozone, solar panels would be near 100% efficient!

And we would never have to worry about power again!

Isn’t that great!

From the beginning I thought it was fishy that all of these “brainiacs” could actually predict that within 100 years the earth would explode if we didn’t DO SOMETHING when every day the National Weather Service and the Weather Channel make predictions that never seem to come true. Like last Christmas (2008) when the morons with tea leaves here predicted (under the guidance from the national weather gurus, mind you.) that a small disturbance was going to come through dropping 2-3 inches of snow the first night then trace snow amounts for three or four days THEN sunny and warm. 10 days later: first night 6 inches of snow followed by snow every day for 10 days 2 or 3 inches at a time. They were amazed at how this snow storm “snuck up on them”. Yeah–these same meteorological society trained “Professionals” who are now trying to predict what the earth is going to do 100 years from now. HAHAHAHAHA! What a bunch of Maroons! (As Bugs would say) No snow here this year, which according to some models suggest a coming Ice Age with the Puget Sound as moderator keeping this area mild and relatively free of precip. And, oh yeah! There has been an astounding discovery: there is a glacier in the crater of Mount St. Helens. In fact, glaciers around the world are actually adding surface area, not retreating. Go figure!

Various phrases the Alarmists love using: “Peer-review,” “the science is settled,” “denying AGW is like saying the earth is flat.” What am I missing…

AGW deniers are the same as Holocaust deniers

Oh and why do you HATE!

Kids!
Old people!
Young people!
