Video: Feinstein used hand notes in 1990
posted at 1:05 pm on February 13, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
Fox News reports that the political history of writing notes on one’s hand shockingly didn’t start with Sarah Palin in 2010. Twenty years before, Dianne Feinstein used it in a televised debate — despite its rules prohibiting the use of notes. Steve Doocy points out that Palin was just giving a speech, where the use of notes is somewhat expected (via Story Balloon, The Blog Prof, and PoliJam):
Honestly, this kerfuffle has me entirely perplexed. Who doesn’t know someone who routinely jots down notes on their hand? In my earlier career, I worked with several people who used this habit, including one of my key direct reports, perhaps one of the most competent people with whom I ever worked. In my mind, having someone at the podium that can speak at length more or less extemporaneously while working from a small set of notes indicates more poise, presence, and preparation than reading a prepared text word for word, although there’s nothing wrong with the latter approach, either. If Palin’s opponents are exerting themselves over the placement of the notes, it tends to indicate that they have no real substantive rebuttal to her speech.
Before the clip gets there, though, listen to what Dana Perino points out about the effectiveness of humor by the White House. I completely agree that we need a sense of humor, but that self-deprecating humor goes a long way to establishing rapport with people, while nasty snark aimed at one’s opponents winds up making the White House look petty.

Yes, you did.

Your second part contradicts your first part. The voters elected Obama with the knowledge (giving them credit for knowing what was going on vs. riding the “historical” wave) (yeah, too much credit, probably) that the Legislative branch was already held by (D)s. They thought this majority was different, and part of the reason was because that’s what they were told. And who are you going to believe, Obama and the press corpse or your lyin’ eyes?
rogerb on February 13, 2010 at 4:10 PM
The accusation is that Palin was “cheating”, but she wasn’t. And yet when someone finds an almost identical incident when someone on your side did the same thing, and actually did cheat in the process, you excuse it. That’s the Leftist double standard in spades.
BTW, since you asked for a “more recent” example of a double standard, as you recall there were 2 guys running for President in 2004. One was the incumbent, and had served in the military some 30 years previously. His Democrat “opponent” had also served in the military at the same time.
However, these 2 candidates were held to a totally different standard by you, and by the “objective” media.
One was allowed to keep his military records from being viewed by the public. The other was successfully sued by the Associated Press to release all of his.
Which candidate was allowed to keep his military records secret? Yours.
C’mon, you can do better too.

Won would have thought that the palm pilot was invented by Sarah Palin. And he’d be wrong.
But, as has been pointed out by Ed, she cheated. And, as we say in the fleet-footed-feline business, cheetahs always lose.

Hey look, Sarah Palin writing a couple of words on her hand is a much bigger story than the dem vp candidate from ’04, John Edwards. If only she had the class and upstanding demeanor of the trailer-trash story John and Elizabeth are turning into.

I do not think that word means what you think it means. Desperate is ignoring the content of a speech to concentrate on a few lines of crib notes on a hand and then proceeding to paint the speaker as dumb because she cribbed her main throughts. Now that we have Feinstein doing the same thing, and in a venue where doing so was cheating, is she dumb? No — but she is still a cheater.
We expect our politicians to be articulate, and to not read verbatim from a sheet of paper (or a set of half-silvered mirrors). The speech must appear to be extemporaneous, if not actually so.
In my mind, a few notes on a hand are just slightly less humorous than a guy whose teleprompter frequently locks up — leading him to say things that would put even his “chimpy” predecessor in office to shame. Of course, sometimes the writing on the hand is far more humorous — as when it reads “Hi, Mom!”
What we are doing here is going nucular — and lovin’ it.
unclesmrgol on February 13, 2010 at 4:26 PM
I think Elizabeth is better left out of this. John has done it all himself.

LOL… how old ARE you?
Hope you’re never planning to make any references to anything before the year 1990. What a silly argument… to compare a speech (sans tele-prompter) and a debate with explicit rules about using notes.
princetrumpet on February 13, 2010 at 4:32 PM
Ah, the lefty “Old news, let’s move on” tactic rears its ugly head.
Of course if any righty had anything—anything at all!—20, 30, 40, even 50!, years in their past it would be worthy of consideration and discussion.
And you know what? So is this. So are all the deeds, even in the past, of the lefties just as they are for righties.
KittyLowrey on February 13, 2010 at 4:35 PM
It’s hard to believe that real living adults are having this conversation. This is what actually matters to some people.
Forget about Iran becoming nuclear, Obama listening to our cell conversations or spying on prolife groups. It doesn’t matter that Obama just axed space flight, lost or destroyed 19 million jobs and is attempting to take over whatever health care is left that has not yet been destroyed by Democrats. No, none of that matters because Sarah Palin read something off of her freaking hand during a speech.

Hard to find a Democrat who can write.
Dr. Charles G. Waugh on February 13, 2010 at 4:45 PM
Even more on Hillary, the documented fact that her boss on the Watergate Committee deemed her dishonest and unethical and declined to give her a reference.
The mind reels at what an assessment like that on an R resume would result in media coverage…and from a boss the Dems revered (at one time), too.
KittyLowrey on February 13, 2010 at 4:48 PM
The beauty of this entire thread is that libs who are always bringing up the past are now complaining that Fox had to dig back 20 years to get some ‘dirt’ or prove a point.
I have always found that boorish of liberals, and think the same in this instance. So, maybe the liberals here will finally get honest with themselves and stick to their own complaints, and not bring up old things that bear little relevance to current issues.
If we call Olbermann a racist I don’t want to hear from some leftie about Jim Crow, in a pitiful attempt to defend Olbie.

I want to remind those who recognize the “corpse man” mistake for what it is, something that exposes Obama has some real areas of stunning ignorance for someone who had the education he supposedly had, that he also misspoke the word “Orion” last year. Like “Corpsman” he repeatedly made the same misspronunciation as he read his Teleprompter, saying it as “OR-ee–un” instead of “or–I–un”.
Now, he was talking about the company but anyone who has received a good education learned that word back in high school and knows how to say it properly.

What a joke…this coming from the “smart ones” who continuously tell us that Joe “jobs is a 3 letter word” Biden is the “smartest man in the room”.
So we have liberals whose leader, the failed community organizer Obama, can’t even speak to ten people in a room without a teleprompter telling him his every word…..
…..has failed to accoplish anything but failed policies like the stimulus with filibuster proof majorities in the Senate/House….
….thinks the US is made up of 57 states, speaks Argentinian, reads “profits and cost ratios” reports, and does not have a clue what is or how to say “corpseman”….
…but is touted by the “adults” like grow fins and crr6 as some kind of super intellectual.
Palin marks down a few notes on her hand, like other democratic Senators do,and this reveals her to be “stupid”.
…but according to super smart grow fins…the fact Feinstein does it shows her to be “intelligent”.
It is painfully apparent that liberals have no credibility at all in determining who is “intelligent” and who is not.

Some? Your way too kind.
Obama has two distinct patterns of speech when he is not reading from the TOTUSA (3 if you include the “ping pong match” body language, or as Jon Stewart pointed out “Cu….ties”)
Off script Obama stumbles and bumbles through questions with errrs and ahhhs along with a good dose of uhmmmmmmms.
Some have been fooled into believing that he is deeeeeeeep in thought.
However as we all know this does not indicate deep thoughts, it does indicate the One is totally lost!
The other pattern is to go into “campaign mode” and shout out “Bumper stickers”
Yes we can!

The liberals were not “laughing” at Sarah because of the hand notes: they were attempting to diminish her. What Diane Feinstein did was wrong, because she cheated, which is of no moment to the liberals, who depend upon cheating and for whom cheating is standard election procedure.
GaltBlvnAtty on February 13, 2010 at 7:22 PM
I think you are missing the point about comparisons to Obama. The common tactic the Palin apologists revert to is to cry “but Obama”. I’m sure you know which people are reasonable people who like Palin versus the ones who are wearing blinders.
I have one point and that is simply that I don’t think Palin is the best qualified or right person to be president. At the same time I will be the first to point out that Obama’s inexperience has been revealed time after time. I backed McCain more than any other candidate in the last 20 years. He has a lifetime conservative rating of 85% or so but to hear commenters at HA he was a hair short of being a libtard commie. That is what happens when objectivity is tossed to the side.
I want someone that knows what the hell they are doing and believe there are several other people far more prepared/qualified than Palin or Obama.
As far as Feinstein – the internet was not really widely used 20 years ago. Had it been, in my opinion her notes on the hand would have generated similar attacks from the blindly partisan.
Perhaps you think differently but that is the way I see it.

It wasn’t so much the crib notes on Quittercuda’s hand (she’s been touted as a leading expert on energy, yet she even had to write that down!), it’s that she mocked the President for using a teleprompter.
Hope this helps.

It’s not about whether she could remember them or not, it’s about scribbling notes on one’s hand to help remember, just in case. If you see no difference between mocking O’ and his Teleprompter and what she did, there really is no hope for you ever being Intellectually honest.

Analogous to the Palin Feinstein split on the palm notes is the Palin Obama split on the “quiting” issue. Obama quit as a senator after 2 years, in which 2 years he did nothing of value, and which led to the Burris appointment. Yet he receives no criticism for that, I suppose because he was just an easily replaceable liberal vote as a senator or because no one expected him to serve a full term.

Last May, he claimed that tornadoes in Kansas killed a whopping 10,000 people: “In case you missed it, this week, there was a tragedy in Kansas. Ten thousand people died — an entire town destroyed.”
The actual death toll: 12.
Obama has as much trouble with numbers as he has with maps. Last March, on the anniversary of the Bloody Sunday march in Selma, Ala., he claimed his parents united as a direct result of the civil rights movement: “There was something stirring across the country because of what happened in Selma, Ala., because some folks are willing to march across a bridge. So they got together and Barack Obama Jr. was born.”
Obama was born in 1961. The Selma march took place in 1965. His spokesman, Bill Burton, later explained that Obama was “speaking metaphorically about the civil-rights movement as a whole.”
Earlier this month in Cape Girardeau, Mo., Obama showed off his knowledge of the war in Afghanistan by homing in on a lack of translators: “We only have a certain number of them, and if they are all in Iraq, then it’s harder for us to use them in Afghanistan.”
The real reason it’s “harder for us to use them” in Afghanistan: Iraqis speak Arabic or Kurdish. The Afghanis speak Pashto, Farsi, or other non-Arabic languages.
…..real genius here chump….absolute intellectual genius…
…because as everybody knows….before 9/11…Afghanistan had just a hugeeeeeeeeeeee defense budget…..
“What you’re now seeing is a profit and earnings ratios get to the point that buying stocks is a good thing if you have a long-term perspective on it,” he said to reporters after meeting in the Oval Office with visiting British Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
Shouldn’t a President of the US know that “P/E Ratio” means “price-to-earnings ratio,” not “profit and earnings ratio?” There is a difference.
….ohhhhhhhhh man…..what an intellectual.
“I’m always worried about using the word ‘victory,’ because, you know, it invokes this notion of Emperor Hirohito coming down and signing a surrender to MacArthur,” Obama told ABC News.
On September 2, 1945, on the deck of the U.S.S. Missouri in Tokyo Bay, the Japanese envoys Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu and Gen. Yoshijiro Umezu signed their names on the Instrument of Surrender….Hirohito was not there.
…can’t expect Obama to know everything…I mean it was only a surrender by the Japanese in WWII….
..Japan was just a “tiny” country anyway.
Confirmed: DVDs that Obama gave Gordon Brown are the wrong format
“And I believe the nation that invented the automobile cannot walk away from it.”

Although several other German engineers (including Gottlieb Daimler, Wilhelm Maybach, and Siegfried Marcus) were working on the problem at about the same time, Karl Benz generally is acknowledged as the inventor of the modern automobile.[8]
“There’s something about August going into September where everyone in Washington gets all ‘wee-weed’ up,” the president said.
“But what they fail to understand is that every economist, from the left and the right, has said, because of the Recovery Act, what we’ve started to see is at least a couple of million jobs that have either been created or would have been lost.

Zombie Time!… Obama Sees Dead People at New Mexico Speech
Barack Obama opens up his Memorial Day speech in Las Cruces, New Mexico:
On…and…on….and…on….the idiocy of Obama is on display for liberals to ignore and whine about Palin writing a few words on her hand.
Liberals have no credibility at all in determining who is intelligent and who is not.

Like President Obowma? READING a teleprompter at a school in front of second grade kids….or saying “ya know” or umm every other word…or “57 states”…or saying “Souix City” when he was in Souix Falls…or just last week, “CORPS-man” three times when it is pronounced “coreman”?
Your liberal logic only twists you into a pretzel.

Quit after two years of a six year term — a third of his first term. Quitter. Not only quit, but broke promise to finish his first term. Quitter and oath-breaker. Quit to seek a higher office he promised his constituents he wouldn’t seek. Quitter and liar. Didn’t quit to return to private life or to have more time for his family, but for higher office. Quitter and glory-seeker.

LOL!
Your not a bright one are you?
What makes you think this is the “only” example they have?
Have you ever heard the term “being played”?
Remember ACORN?
The first video came out and was denounced, as this is fake! Yada yada yada
A few days later, another video, and more denunciations.
A few more days later, another video, and more denunciations.
And then ACORN has no credibility anymore.
Again, what makes you think this is the “only” example they have?

What comes off as desperate is the pitiful and all-consuming fear that the Left feels for Sarah Palin – which accounts for the infantile attacks which they launch about everything Palin does or says.
Your response is typical, too: When your critique of Palin is shown to be hypocritical, unfair and not limited to just her (i.e., as with that moron Feinstein), your respond: “Aw, but thats not the same thing.”
Soooo pathetic, really.
seanrobins on February 13, 2010 at 11:31 PM
Oh please. Now you’re getting as juvenile as the Liberals. This is the best we’ve got in response to attacks on Sarah Palin?
Ugh.
SuperManGreenLantern on February 13, 2010 at 11:42 PM
You’re wrong and your post is a perfect example of why we have the Tea Party movement. You’re not getting it. This is something that happened TWENTY YEARS AGO.

The only idiots are the liberals that have to come up with lame excuses like “it happened years ago” to defend their pathetic hypocrisy concerning Palin and laughable stance that Obama is some kind of “intellectual”.
…just another liberal smear biting the dust in the face of reality.
Baxter Greene on February 14, 2010 at 1:04 AM
Which in no way, shape, or form discredits the fact THAT IT DID HAPPEN.
This is not the hand of Eleanor Roosevelt…….this is the hand of a current and high ranking democratic Senator.
She wrote notes on her hand just like Palin did.
Period.
If doing so is such a sign of stupidity when Palin did it….then it applies to the democrats also.
The fact it happened a few years ago is irrelevant to the fact THAT IT DID HAPPEN.
If there is some type of statue of limitations as to when someone’s actions are irrelevant, please list them and inform all the liberals who have spent the last 8 years calling Bush a drunk and coke head due to his partying years in college more than 30 years ago (hypocritically ignoring that the chicken hawk Obama was a cocaine abuser himself) was irrelevant.
Baxter Greene on February 14, 2010 at 1:21 AM
They would just ignore it and talk about something real important like “did Palin pay for her clothes” or “is trig really her baby”…….
Baxter Greene on February 14, 2010 at 1:25 AM
Who the hell cares if ANY of these bozos, left, right or middle, scribble a coupe of words on their hand?
Now, if you need a team of speechwriters and multiple teleprompters to sound halfway coherent, that is worth some media coverage and negative comments from the opposition, but, man, I’m sick of this sillyness.

She’s written:

and
“Act like W. Blitzer didn’t advance me debate questions”
only once.

See… Comments like this one, might actually have some weight, if D. Frankenstein had not been raised up to such a high level in government… However, when you worship and elevate cheaters you get things like this Washington Times story…(and btw… DiFi was cheating with her hand writings, Sarah merely memory jogged when specificity was important, but where there were no rules were against notes… but then you know that, don’t you.)…

Still cheating her aging little a** off I see. Notice that a spokesmen had to give that excuse (the bolded section)… Because it was too long to fit on Di’s hand no doubt.

..Good point….
Feinstein also appears to posses the same level of intelligence that Joe “I won the Iraq war” Biden possess…..
Good work, Feinstein: Senator blabs that U.S. drones are based in … Pakistan
http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/world/la-fg-uspakistan13-2009feb13,0,4776260.story?track=rss
….but…but…but she is so intelligent.
The balance between carrying out very unpopular military actions and keeping a country’s populace in check was extremely important in Pakistan.
A balance that the democrat Feinstein blew with what liberals call “smart power”.
….As anybody paying attention knows….our relationship with Pakistan has deteriorated.
They have already announced that there will be no more offensives against the Taliban launched.
…but liberals don’t have any answers for such idiocy so whine about really important issues like “did you see the bracelet Palin had on”…..
“smart power” indeed…..

RepubChica on February 14, 2010 at 10:56 AM
The reason this is stupid is because people don\’t understand public speaking-I have to give speeches regularly, with question and answer sessions after wards. I am pretty good at it, I guess, since I get invited to speak often. I use notes for my speech, and often use bullet points for the questions, much like Sarah did. Anyone who public speaks often knows that when you are up there, speaking in a dynamic way, you can lose your train of thought, or even have a total mind blank from the pressure of all of those people staring at you. Bullet points help you focus your mind. People keep saying she was idiotic to not be able to remember seemingly easy things- You are only allowed to make this charge if you have ever given several speeches in a row, and done it flawlessly with out notes. I know talks tend to run together in my head- bullet points let you keep it all straight while you\’re under the lights. Seriously, the argument that her notes are mock worthy because she made fun of Obama\’s teleprompter are laughable- reading a speech like a drone, and giving a dynamic speech and answering questions off the cuff with little more than bullets are two totally different things. Any idiot with an elementary school education can read a prompter-what Sarah does is harder, and she does it extraordinarily well.
