Operation Moshtarak under way in Afghanistan’s Helmand province

posted at 12:21 pm on February 13, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

The first major offensive in Afghanistan under Barack Obama’s command has begun this weekend as Coalition troops swarmed into the Helmand Province town of Marjah.  The Taliban had increased its strength in Helmand in part by holding Marjah, and first reports have them falling back into a smaller perimeter inside the city as air and ground forces attack.  Operation Moshtarak (“Together”) aims to cripple the Taliban in their primary position of strength:

The massive offensive was aimed at establishing Afghan government authority over the biggest southern town under militant control and breaking the Taliban grip over a wide area of their southern heartland.

Maj. Gen. Nick Carter, NATO commander of forces in southern Afghanistan, said Afghan and coalition troops, aided by 60 helicopters, made a “successful insertion” into Marjah in southern Helmand province. He said the operation was going “without a hitch.”

Thousands of British, U.S. and Canadian troops also swept into Taliban areas to the north of Marjah, seeking to clear a wide swath of villages that had been under Taliban control for several years. …

The few civilians who ventured out to talk to the Marines said teams of Taliban fighters were falling back deeper into the town, perhaps to try to regroup and mount harassment attacks to prevent the government from rushing in aid and public services _ a key step in the operation.

The long-awaited assault on Marjah is the biggest offensive since the 2001 U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan and is a major test of a new NATO strategy focused on protecting civilians. The attack is also the first major combat operation since President Barack Obama ordered 30,000 U.S. reinforcements here in December to try to turn the tide of the war.

The results of this offensive won’t really be known for months.  The Taliban have to hold onto Helmand to maintain credibility as a force in Afghanistan, but they have been remarkably flexible about how they do so for much longer than the US has been fighting there.  If we can free Marjah and deliver government services in an efficient manner, that will go a long way toward building the Kabul government’s credibility and undermining the Taliban’s threat, but only if the Marjah Afghans believe that the government will remain in business in Helmand.

To a great extent, that depends on the determination of NATO, the US, and Barack Obama.  With major coalition partner Canada due to exit its commitment at the end of next year — no great surprise, considering the snub they received from Obama last year and their own domestic politics — Obama has about 18 months to secure Helmand and build up an Afghan contingent that can replace the Canadians and other NATO partners in holding it.  Operation Moshtarak may mean “together,” but togetherness has an expiration date.  That’s one reason why Obama had to flood the zone in order to have a chance at crippling the Taliban and convincing the Pashtuns to cut ties with its extremist leadership.

We’ll see a lot of tactical success in the first days of Moshtarak, and that will be very good news.  Keep focused on the weeks and months ahead to see whether we’ve built on that success, or whether we’ve had to hunker down in Helmand instead.  And keep the troops, their commanders, and their Commander-in-Chief in your prayers, because they’ll all need them to prevail.

Rushing in aid and “Afghan” public services are the decisive weapon of victory? Building a girls school will be the equivalent of raising the flag on Suribachi? Announcing our attack, and thus allowing them to both prepare defenses, and reinforce the area, is a risky venture.

Yes, if they stay, we have lured them onto “Dangerous Ground”… and can thus unleash our firepower upon them

But if we don’t relax the Rules of engagment (thus using our firepower), AND ensure there is no valid line of retreat?

I truly hope that announcing this was a MILITARY decision, not a POLITICAL decision…

We are so fortunate to have the greatest military on the planet! May God keep these men and women safe. May he comfort their families here at home while this engagement proceeds.

On Fox this morning they reported that the military had warned the Afghans of this forthcoming movement into the area. Okay. The result they hoped for was that the Taliban would stay behind, the people would move out, and then we would kill lots of Taliban and not Afghans. Here is praying they are correct.

However, I worry about the amount of IEDs which would have been scattered about in the past 3 weeks. Fox also said that most of the Marines would be going in on foot because of the terrain. They will have air cover. Who is to say the Taliban did not force the citizenry to stay behind to give them cover? I am all for trying to ease Afghan tensions by doing what can be done to protect civilian life, but not at the expense of IEDs being planted all over the country side, and the result being our soldiers are maimed or killed. For once, could we just go in, surprise the hell out of these guys and just clean their clocks? Why do the commanders not get this as a tactic?

And if a Republican is elected in 2012, the ROE need some SERIOUS reviewing. Total pc B.S.!

We’ll see a lot of tactical success in the first days of Moshtarak, and that will be very good news. Keep focused on the weeks and months ahead to see whether we’ve built on that success, or whether we’ve had to hunker down in Helmand instead.

…..and the Taliban will not offer significant resistance, they know they can’t fight our Military toe to toe.

This is why they will blend in and retreat to other areas and prepare for the hit and run tactics they are so famous for:

Militants plan to wait out looming offensive disguised as civilians)

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/35293212/ns/world_news-south_and_central_asia/

“a Taliban commander told NBC News’ Richard Engel that many insurgents would wait out the offensive.”

“They (U.S. and coalition troops) will come in and announce that they have conquered the area. We will let them come in. They are welcome.
“They will ask, ‘Are there any Taliban in the area?’ We will say, ‘Yes, but they have left’,” the Taliban leader added.
“We will not fight them face-to-face,” he said. “We will shake their hands, as civilians. Then they will leave.”

Like with Iraq…the training and success of the Afghan forces combined with a willingness to reject the enemy (Taliban/al-qaeda) is going to be one of the main keys to victory.

We can only hope that Obama is in this to win and not to just slip away when politically convenient.

There is no doubt our Men and Women in Uniform can complete the mission in front of them…….
….will the people of Afghanistan do their part like the Iraqis did????

…..and what about Pakistan????????

The offensive was widely broadcast by the media and it seems the military in Afghanistan built up troops on their perimeter knowing full well the effect it would have- the enemy fighters would largely withdraw, leaving behind scores of IEDs and booby traps, ready to fight again another day. You don’t tell an enemy like the Taliban a week in advance you’re planning to attack them- you just do it.

Latest reports I’ve read suggest isolated fire-fights from the few enemy that remained behind but the chance to strike the enemy hard- and kill a large number of them- has been thrown away.

Seems to me like a political decision to avoid heavy fighting and concurrent losses. Instead we have a huge media hype about a major offensive that will fail to seriously damage the enemy.

It is more like allowing our soldiers to be killed in the defense of innocent women and children…announcing days ahead of time that a major offense is about to take place allowed the insurrgents to place more roadside IED’s and to be prepared for an attack…instead of the usual warfare where you strike before the enemy knows what hits them…
Obama and his “new, more compassionate warfare”….
May God bless and keep our soldiers, and those fighting alongside…

The concept/tactics was demonstrated in Falogah(sp) c. 2004.

1. Warn of violence ahead. Civilians move out as much as possible. Combatants (bad guys) dig up stashes and prepare for “fun”. “Gonna get soma them infidels now.” MSM ignores most of this phase.

2.Hit the town (80,000 total week before last) with maximum violence (If it moves shoot. If it moves again, you were not accurate.) Divide the town into sectors and secure (empty) them one by one. From Falogah, “The Americans were like a machine. They just never stopped coming.” MSM counts US casualties and proclaims failure.

3. Repopulate the town thru closely guarded checkpoints slowly. Keep control of cleared town. Examine politician’s careers to see if they are useful to US or not. MSM ignores this step; proclaims failure.

4. Work on power and sanitation. About a year with some smaller sabotage. MSM mostly ignores except on a slow day. Citizens bring out their weapons and hunts t’s on its own. Sure its vigilante but gets rid of the few bad guys left.

Worked well in Iraq. In A’stan, there is poppy and tradition. The overall object IMHO is to bring 18th Century A’stan closer to early 20th. Cell phones will help. TV not so much.

First off it is Fallujah.

Fallujah (Arabic: الفلوجة‎; sometimes transliterated as Falluja, Fallouja, or Falowja, Aramaic: Pumbeidtha.

While what you suggest would clear the town it does not solve the problems that a poor, landlocked country, with no infrastructure can deal with.

The only goods an Afgan farmer can grow/bring to market is poppy/opium.

Cell phones and TV’s wont cut it.

The country needs a complete infrastructure build up. Not just a repair.

I know you quoted that from Wikipedia, but that Arabic says: “Al-Fallujah”

Fallujah itself would be: “فلوجة”

I don’t know why but they often drop the “Al” when talking about Al-Fallujah.

So, if you are going to belittle someone for their spelling or pronunciation you probably shouldn’t post contradicting information.
