Video: O’Donnell meltdown on Morning Joe

posted at 10:52 am on February 12, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Anyone who recalls Lawrence O’Donnell’s meltdown with John O’Neill over the latter’s opposition to John Kerry in 2004 won’t be surprised at O’Donnell’s inability to behave himself with Marc Thiessen on today’s Morning Joe. O’Donnell accuses Thiessen of personally conducting terrorism himself and wouldn’t stop shouting, until finally Joe Scarborough took the unusual step of stopping the segment and announcing that he would continue the interview … “by myself.” Weekly Standard captured O’Donnell’s unhinged rant:

Why is O’Donnell still appearing on MS-NBC after his unprofessional behavior in 2004, and his generally consistent unprofessional behavior? The same network that features its “news anchor” declaring pickup trucks as racist probably doesn’t have many standards to begin with. It looks like Scarborough, who openly criticized Keith Olbermann and got a corporate smackdown for it, has had about enough of it. And who could blame him?

Update: Story Balloon has more of the interview.

Anyone watching that exchange would agree that Theissen came out the winner. When you make a reasonable argument and claim that’s counter by frothing at the mouth then you’ve won.

gwelf on February 12, 2010 at 11:37 AM

Thiessen came out the winner in this one too.

Joe just said that he think O’Donnell lost his bowels during his meltdown. They are ripping on him now for his meltdowns, with Tucker. And they said Lawrence was banned for a year over another meltdown. They need to ban him forever.

Kensington on February 12, 2010 at 11:34 AM

While that may be true, at least he’s not as nutty and stupid as Olbermann, Maddow, Matthews, or Ed Schultz. Morning Joe is probably the only show on MSNBC that doesn’t send me into a fit of rage every morning.

Shock the Monkey on February 12, 2010 at 11:41 AM

Previous show, panel discussion with O’Donnell remote -

Scarborough: “Crazy Larry, are you still with us?”
(long pause)
O’Donnell: “Lawrence O’Donnell is still here.”

Marcus on February 12, 2010 at 11:43 AM

O’Donnell is on the Joe and Mika radio show right now. Why do they give him even more time?

sarainitaly on February 12, 2010 at 11:28 AM

Because the whole thing was a setup, with Scarborough posing as the lead player.

They knew exactly what they were doing and knew this video would go viral.

O’Donnell is just telling the truth. A large percentage of the Left blames Bush solely for 9/11. They have done so since 9/12. They were just quieter about it back then.

Speedwagon82 on February 12, 2010 at 11:46 AM

Looks like The Jerry Springer Show has some competition over at MSNBC with that Robert Gibbs look-a-like Lawrence O’Donnell.

redwhiteblue on February 12, 2010 at 11:46 AM

From NRO’s ‘The Corner’

Oh, and lest you think O’Donnell’s outburst rose up from some deeply-seated conviction, witness this tweet from Scarborough:

The best part of Lawrence O’ Donnell’s. rant is that when we went to break, Lawrence broke out in a huge smile. “It’s what I do best.”
So this was purely a planned shout down. Allowing PMS-NBC to claim they have people with opposing viewpoints on, while at the same time, preventing those opinions from being aired… Pathetic

Caper29 on February 12, 2010 at 11:47 AM

Soooooooooo……the terrorists were awaiting the outcome of the 2000 election?
Had Gore won, there would’ve been no 9/11…????
And once Bush was declared the winner, the terrorists began hatching the plan for September 11, 2001…?????
Prior to that, they had no desire nor inclination to attack us….????

Is that what Larry is saying….????

guitarguy on February 12, 2010 at 11:49 AM

It is amazing that liberals can say that Bush made us less safe due to the Iraq war or Gitmo but if someone says that liberal policies make us less safe that’s beyond the pale.

O’Donnell needs to be removed from that network. He neither has the emotional or professional qualities needed to be on such a show.

He does have excellent taste in women, however. So he’s got that going for him.

SteveMG on February 12, 2010 at 11:49 AM

You always know you’re on the right isde of an argument when that’s the way you have to behave to make a point. All that was missing was the fingers in the ears and the “la la la la la I can’t hear you!”.

Scrappy on February 12, 2010 at 11:49 AM

I won’t watch it. But I hope Thiessen fought back. Sitting still and absorbing abuse with polite decorum is getting old. I’ve seen Thiessen elsewhere when he permitted himself to get shouted down and abused.

rrpjr on February 12, 2010 at 11:50 AM

It’s kind of amusing when Far-left National Socialist Democrats go nuts.

Okay, let’s break down the double standard:

Bush coming into office should have Known that the Muslim terrorists were going to attack and done something about it.

And yet in the midst of a war Obowmao doesn’t have to care if the same Muslim terrorists want to attack us and can dismantle the mechanisms that have protected us with impunity.

Do I have the double standard correctly framed?

Colbyjack on February 12, 2010 at 11:50 AM

I agree too. That and if I have to watch anymore of the MSNBC commercials trashing Republicans. Especially the commercial for Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow (“When will the Minority Party realize it’s the minority” and “It’s harder to tell with the center ends and the fringe begins.”). MSNBC is 10x worse than liberals make Fox out to be.

Rovin on February 12, 2010 at 12:01 PM

Why is O’Donnell still appearing on MS-NBC after his unprofessional behavior in 2004, and his generally consistent unprofessional behavior?

Because shrieking liberals is their standard format. Like all liberals (without exception),they argue an issue on its merits, so they use their Alinsky tactics and talk over, yell whine, whatever it takes to keep the conservative from being heard. I’m sure that it played well to the idiots who actually watch MSNBC (both of them), but to the sane segment of society it drives moderates to the right.

It’s all good.

orlandocajun on February 12, 2010 at 12:01 PM

Indeed. If conservatives would stop dissecting interviews from TIME, CNN and MSNBC, maybe they’d be gone by now.
hawksruleva on February 12, 2010 at 11:59 AM

Exactly. Conservatives continue (at least subconsciously) to seek validation from the mainstream media they condemn. Until we break this orphan-child syndrome, little will change.

rrpjr on February 12, 2010 at 12:19 PM

Where is the Hanna Giles or Lila Rose for the devastatingly corrupt organizations that we call the American mainstream media?

There have to be some working in those organizations who know what real journalism is and are just stuck working in these cesspools. HotAir and MM should look for those staffers who have the evidence and encourage them to be whistleblowers. MM has the clout to protect a source and HotAir has proven that it can break stories and bring them to the public fore without the biggies in print and broadcast media.

It’s fast becoming time that this biased yellow journalism be slapped down hard once again.

Jason Coleman on February 12, 2010 at 12:21 PM

Yep, Joe S. is the ‘sane’ voice at MSLSD. Too bad for Joe that he miscalculated by going after Chris Wallace for the ‘eye roll’ that didn’t happen. He might have lined up a good gig at Fox when MSLSD finally folds. Alas, poor Joe has been slowly succumbing to Stockholm sydrome before our eyes and alienating his former cohorts.

O’Donnell’s brain is stuck on the first floor. He has the intellectual depth a sack of crap. Why do they waste time with a$$-hats like this?

Claypigeon on February 12, 2010 at 12:56 PM

I tend to watch MoJo most mornings. I like the “in depth” political discussions rather than the typical potpourri of morning drivel. However, Old Joe has really started to wear on my nerves with the constant Republican bashing and Democrat a$$ kissing. His ego is also way out of proportion with reality.

joedoe on February 12, 2010 at 12:57 PM

O’Donnell is one scary dude.

The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. He’s originally from Quincy, MA. His old man was a former cop and then attorney who made a living suing police.

Pop O’Donnell was just as unhinged and inflammatory as sad Larry. Pops was a regular (in the 80s) with America’s first radio talk show host Jerry Williams (on Boston’s WRKO).

The old man filled the airwaves with conspiracy theories and unfounded (angry) accusations against anyone who wore the blue uniform. Larry is no different, a crank.

d1carter on February 12, 2010 at 1:05 PM

O’Donnell needs to get off the air, period. But the interesting thing here is the more subtle response of Mike to Theissen. She won’t even look at him. She looks away as if it is painful to see him. I suspect disgust, and perhaps some fear that what he wrote in his book’s subtitle is true.

I recall vividly the O’Donnell blowup in 2004 and he was “suspended”, or at least not invited back for several months.

They mentioned something I completely forgot about and this was not talked about by the media. They stated on his 2nd day in office President Obama disbanded our CIA detention and interrogation unit and that they were going to create this new Interagency Task Force one instead, which still has not happened.

Executive Order 13491 – Ensuring Lawful Interrogation

Sec. 4. Prohibition of Certain Detention Facilities, and Red Cross Access to Detained Individuals.

(a) CIA Detention. The CIA shall close as expeditiously as possible any detention facilities that it currently operates and shall not operate any such detention facility in the future.

That means after the Christmas day bomber was capture there were was not “2 choices” about what to do with him because this supposed “Interagency Task Force” never created the units it was suppose to and there is no other place to hold him even if it was.

Why has no one hammered the Obama administration about creating this new task force unit before disbanding our present system? Heck why is no one hammering him on the fact that after a year there is still no system in place besides the FBI now?

Oh and in case you are wondering, the Chairman of this task force is the Attorney General, who was suppose to make sure all of this was accomplished since 22 Jan 2009, yet not a single thing has been done.

JeffinSac on February 12, 2010 at 2:58 PM

Oh and here is the link to the other executive order that dealt with the detention policy they were suppose to create and still have not.

Executive Order 13493 – Review of Detention Policy Options

Section 1. Special Interagency Task Force on Detainee Disposition.

(a) Establishment of Special Interagency Task Force. There shall be established a Special Task Force on Detainee Disposition (Special Task Force) to identify lawful options for the disposition of individuals captured or apprehended in connection with armed conflicts and counterterrorism operations.

and

(e) Mission. The mission of the Special Task Force shall be to conduct a comprehensive review of the lawful options available to the Federal Government with respect to the apprehension, detention, trial, transfer, release, or other disposition of individuals captured or apprehended in connection with armed conflicts and counterterrorism operations, and to identify such options as are consistent with the national security and foreign policy interests of the United States and the interests of justice.

this was suppose to be accomplished within 180 days and here we are 385 days later and nothing has been done. Heck I have not even heard if they have held a single meeting.
