Video: O’Donnell meltdown on Morning Joe

posted at 10:52 am on February 12, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Anyone who recalls Lawrence O’Donnell’s meltdown with John O’Neill over the latter’s opposition to John Kerry in 2004 won’t be surprised at O’Donnell’s inability to behave himself with Marc Thiessen on today’s Morning Joe. O’Donnell accuses Thiessen of personally conducting terrorism himself and wouldn’t stop shouting, until finally Joe Scarborough took the unusual step of stopping the segment and announcing that he would continue the interview … “by myself.” Weekly Standard captured O’Donnell’s unhinged rant:

Why is O’Donnell still appearing on MS-NBC after his unprofessional behavior in 2004, and his generally consistent unprofessional behavior? The same network that features its “news anchor” declaring pickup trucks as racist probably doesn’t have many standards to begin with. It looks like Scarborough, who openly criticized Keith Olbermann and got a corporate smackdown for it, has had about enough of it. And who could blame him?

Update: Story Balloon has more of the interview.

I think O’Donnell is kept on only as a sideshow attraction. The guy doesn’t have enough brainpower to be trusted making change at the grocery store. Of course, that means that he’s qualified to be the Dem Presidential candidate.

I predict that O’Donnell is eventually going to do something very bad on TV.

neurosculptor on February 12, 2010 at 10:54 AM

Lawrence O’Donnell is the only other person crazy and stupid enough on MSNBC to fill in for Keith Olbermann on Countdown.

Shock the Monkey on February 12, 2010 at 10:56 AM

O’Donnell fits in quite nicely with Olbermann, Matthews and the rest of that left wing MSNBC trash.

O’Donnell is probably the worst interviewer on TV these days. Here he is ‘interviewing’ Peter Schiff and actually talking more than the guest.

Allah, I think you need to get the screen shot of him about to smack Cathy Siepp. That O’Donnell is a tough guy!

joeindc44 on February 12, 2010 at 11:05 AM

Hey, this is just the lamestream media variant of “Blame Bush”. Obama does essentially the same thing every time he blames Bush, except that he never has the pulpit all to himself so he doesn’t have to talk over anyone else.

I’m guessin’ MSNBC hopes his head does explode. It’s about the only thing that might improve their ratings.

ProfessorMiao on February 12, 2010 at 11:07 AM

Marc destroyed O’Donnell. I love the way Marc argued with facts at hand while O’Donnell resorted to attacking the messenger by saying that (oh the horror!!) he went to a boarding school with a golf course. Yeah, Larry that proves your point.

thedudesblog on February 12, 2010 at 11:07 AM

Completely unacceptable. There are a lot of “pinheads” (even on this site) that like to say O’Reilly runs people over in interviews. This goes waaayyy beyond that, and is completely beyond the pale. They’d better remember this the next time they want to criticize FOXNews for not “really” being a news outlet. This partisan hack needs to go, but, if they’re going to keep on Olberman and that lying, racist drunk Matthews, its just more eeason to trust FOX, and distrust MS-NBC.

Virus-X on February 12, 2010 at 11:07 AM

Will Mr. Scarborough get reprimanded again?

Cindy Munford on February 12, 2010 at 11:07 AM

Lawrence O’Donnell should have been drummed out of network journalism a long long time ago. The man is neither objective nor is he reasonable. He is nothing but a loudmouthed shill with one single point of view and he will express that point of view whether anyone wants to hear it or not.

I don’t blame Scarborough one bit for finally cutting this clown off.

But I am suspecting if anyone ends up getting disciplined for this, it will most likely be Scarborough, because MS-NBC is leaning more and more toward filling their moderator seats with idiots like O’Donnell.

SouthernGent on February 12, 2010 at 11:06 AM

I think he’s married to former Steeler quarterback Neil O’Donnell, who is most noted for completing two passes to cornerback Larry Brown in Super Bowl XXX.

Mark1971 on February 12, 2010 at 11:11 AM

There can be no question that O\’Donnell is convinced that George W. Bush actively courted the 9/11 attacks for some nefarious purpose. He literally became unhinged. The fact that he so quickly reached that state of hysteria showed that he planned that reaction towards Thiessen before the segment. MSNBC, with that segment, mainstreamed trutherism. That network is a disgrace and Scarborough is part of the problem. As long as he hangs around as the token conservative he gives them cover.

walkingboss on February 12, 2010 at 11:11 AM

Can an entire network have a nervous breakdown? That’s the direction MSNBC is headed (though when I just saw the headline here, I was kind of hoping to get a video of Nora O’Donnell going batshirt crazy. Seeing Larry do it is like watching a re-run that wasn’t very good the first time around).

jon1979 on February 12, 2010 at 11:11 AM

Larry O’Donnell is a decent actor, and I always enjoy when he pops up on Big Love.

I’ve heard Scarborough (the few times I’ve watched that garbage show)say some pretty stupid things as well, and as far as I’m concerned he belongs on that “network”. As far as O’Donnell(listen to the beginning of the clip where he clarifies he’s a Socialist)he’s just another brainwashed Moonbat who can only cry, “Bush,Bush,Bush.” He’s a lunatic right up there with Olbergoebbels and Butch Maddow. This is the ENEMY WITHIN. These are the people who are PROGRESSively tearing apart the Constitution and the country.

The things that pass for knowledge

Babino on February 12, 2010 at 11:21 AM

They have O’Donnel on because he connects with the low IQ raging thug segment of the liberal movement which is much larger than any fringe on the right and probably does rate a homeland security alert memo.

Speakup on February 12, 2010 at 11:21 AM

From NRO’s ‘The Corner’

Oh, and lest you think O’Donnell’s outburst rose up from some deeply-seated conviction, witness this tweet from Scarborough:

The best part of Lawrence O’ Donnell’s. rant is that when we went to break, Lawrence broke out in a huge smile. “It’s what I do best.”

So this was purely a planned shout down. Allowing PMS-NBC to claim they have people with opposing viewpoints on, while at the same time, preventing those opinions from being aired… Pathetic

This sort of shit is going to be happening more and more as the leftists (the traditional violent side of the political spectrum) come to the reality that America does not want their super special Empty Utopian Unicorns they are selling. Throw in the fact that their cult of Gia is freezing up and there is going to be some real fun watching them emotionally erupt. Expect lots more.

Lawrence is a prime example of lefty madness. And with the flame out of obama, its just going to get more and more extreme as they go through EXTREMELY traumatic effects of the utter rejection of their messiah and his/their philosophies.

I think someone like this…You really have to wonder about their kids. Because this goes beyond rage issues, it goes into psychotics. Hopefully the kids of Mr O’Donnell have not been harmed in any way.

Handel on February 12, 2010 at 11:25 AM

O’Donnell should write a nice apology note to both of Morning Joe’s viewers. Personally, I think the whole interview should have ended when the personal accusations started.

Not knowing who flew the airliners into the Towers and the Pentagon at the moment it happened shows stupidity, eh?

I don’t think so.

No, stupidity happens when you find out who did it and, knowing that, fail to act to prevent it from ever happening again.

unclesmrgol on February 12, 2010 at 11:25 AM

Weakness invites attacks.

The 9/11 attacks were planned during the Clinton years, after the 1993 first terror attack on the WTC’s. Billy Jeff demonstrated weakness after the two embassy bombings in Africa, the year 2000 USS Cole strike, et al.

Bush’s diffident response to the de facto downing and capture of a military plane by China early in 2001 likely hinted to Bin Laden and scum that Bush was carrying forward with the Clintonian weakness.

And the 9/11 attacks went forward likely under that assumption.

They guessed wrong.

Bush was only unfocused.

3,000 dead cleared away the scales from his eyes.

And the jihadists were driven from their terror-supporting Taliban state in Afghanistan, which was defeated and overthrown by our military under Bush.

Weakness, which Obama has reinstalled in Washington, will invite more attacks.

SEE: Fort Hood. Christmas Day Underwear Bomber.

WEAKNESS is the key, O’Dumbell.

And Obama is the Crown Prince of Weakness.

Sugar Land on February 12, 2010 at 11:13 AM

Same could be said of O’Reilly sometimes. But most of the time, O’Reilly sticks to the facts, and raises his voice out of frustration over someone trying to jerk him around. Lawwweee O’Donnell just shouts and pounds his fists because his positions are so easily defeated.

At any rate, I think some of these guys like O’Donnell are just trying to emulate O’Reilly to get ratings. But most of them just can’t pull it off.

UltimateBob on February 12, 2010 at 11:29 AM

Too bad this video doesn’t show what happened after the break. Joe gave O’Donnell 30 seconds near the end of the interview but Thiessen had the last words. O’Donnell knew which schools and college Thiessen had attended and tried to discredit his authority on terrorism because he hadn’t served in the military. Yet O’Donnell didn’t state his own qualifications for making those accusations. O’Donnell was happy though, to have something for Ed tonight. His behavior was appalling, absolutely unacceptable. Hope Joe doesn’t let him back on the show. Thiessen definitely won the fight and made his point about how Obama has made the country less safe by eliminating the CIA’s enhanced interrogation program, on his second day of presidency. Which makes me realize that for over one year we have had no means of interrogating terrorists other than what happened with the underwear bomber. Scary!
