Video: Frozen Wasteland
posted at 9:57 pm on February 11, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
At first, you’re tempted to dismiss this cover version of the Who classic “Baba O’Reilly,” until you start listening to both the lyrics and the musical performance of this band from Minnesotans for Global Warming (M4GW). It’s almost as good as an “Unplugged” version of the song might be by the original band. M4GW took its inspiration from the Super Bowl halftime show, which means I should apologize for my snarky tweets during the game about the geriatric impulse of the NFL in scheduling the recent halftime shows. (Kathy Shaidle scolded me properly at the time.) I’m not sure that I have a favorite part, but I do like how this works as both a satire of the global-warming hysterics and music videos in general. Enjoy.
Update: My bad — the real name of the song is, of course, “Baba O’Reilly”. I knew that, but I’ve always thought of it as “Teenage Wasteland,” and the “Frozen Wasteland” title of the video tripped me up.

Y’all are seeing it as a funny anti-Global Warming video, while I (sigh) am longing for the BWCAW (Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness) up near the Canadian border in northern Minnesota. Our two labs were born and bred there, and our yellow lab, Echo is named for a particularly picturesque trek, as well as the local “newspaper” (term used loosely), The Ely Echo.
Even though we go there in summer and fall when there is no ice and the water is the color of cool, clear tea, the walleye and northern pike are biting, and the wind is whispering through the pines like a mother’s kiss…anything Minnesota makes me long for that place, but when the weather is good! I wouldn’t give you a wooden nickel to live there in the winter!

I know – I watched Breitbart’s speech, too- wasn’t it great?!
I don’t get around that much, got to know him cause I have a daughter who is a staunch conservative ( small minority on that campus) at Cornell Univ. and so was there for a senior day activity, had been exchanging email with this guy since last summer when I followed a HA link to one of his arthicles articles – he actually got hold of the kid when she got back to campus last summer and met with her…

Hey, that was pretty good; I like it.
By the way, the reason that they have gone with classic rock groups for the last several years or, as you have put it, “the geriatric impulse of the NFL for scheduling halftime shows”, is because well established, all male, classic rock groups tend to me much, much less prone to “wardrobe malfunctions” than do not-as-established, young female performers who need a reason to be in the news for awhile.
By the way, I like the halftime show picks of the last several years. :) :) :)

If it weren’t for continuous “wardrobe malfunctions” Lady Gaga and a couple of others wouldn’t have a career. The classic rock bands needed talent to get by on; these aforementioned “ladies” will have about as much staying power as the average 80′s band.
This is from an over-the-hill Steely Dan fan.

Magnificent video. This is pure speculation but perhaps as those in opposition to liberal power increasingly encompass more libertarian elements we will see more creativity in expression of that opposition?
The stereotype with which I am familiar is that liberals tend to be more creative while conservatives are less so. Not hanging my hat on it, just putting it out there.
