Quinnipiac: Obama down to 45%

posted at 5:35 pm on February 11, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

A pair of polls released today show that the electorate continues to sour on Barack Obama and his agenda after the State of the Union address.  Quinnipiac’s survey of over 2600 registered voters produces a 45% approval rating with a 46% disapproval, the highest yet from Quinnipiac.  Trust in government has plunged as well:

American voters remain deeply divided about President Barack Obama’s job performance, giving him a 45 – 46 percent job approval, but disapproval of both Democrats and Republicans in Congress tops 2-1. This could explain why only 2 percent trust government to do what is right almost all of the time, and 16 percent trust government to do right most of the time, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

While President Obama’s ratings on the economy and job creation remain low, voters strongly support the steps he has proposed to put Americans back to work, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University survey finds.

American voters still disapprove 54 – 35 percent of Obama’s health care reform plan, but they say 52 – 44 percent they want Congress and the President to keep trying on health care reform rather than giving up and moving on to other matters.

But how exactly do people want Obama and the GOP to continue working on health-care reform?  Rasmussen’s survey of likely voters says a wide majority wants to shred the current ObamaCare proposals and start from scratch:

President Obama this week called for a televised bipartisan summit to get his health care reform plan back on track, but 61% of U.S. voters say Congress should scrap that plan and start all over again.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds just 28% who think it is better to build on the health care plan that has been working its way through the House and Senate.

Support for and opposition to the existing plan remain at the same levels they’ve been at since just after Thanksgiving.

The Rasmussen numbers on ObamaCare look about the same as Quinnipiac, 58-39 opposed.  Majorities in every age and income demographic support starting over from scratch, as well as 66% of independents.  Democrats support building on current proposals, but only by a 53/35 majority.

The internals of Obama’s approval ratings look increasingly desperate.  Independents disapprove 40/49, as do middle class voters 41/51 ($50-100K) and 43/54 ($100K-250K).  He has now lost Catholics, 41/52, while Jewish voters split evenly 49/49 — which are two big red flags among- usually loyal Democratic groups, especially the latter.

Obama has now gotten two bad days of polling news, and one thing is clear: attempting to pose as bipartisan at the House Republican Caucus meeting and in the State of the Union speech did Obama no long-term good at all.  Voters still dislike Obama’s policies, and his demand for Republican cooperation hasn’t rallied anyone to his standard.  Republicans apparently managed to win the long-term argument from those appearances — which should give them confidence in standing their ground and continuing the debate.

rob verdi on February 11, 2010 at 5:36 PM

Give Barry a break. He’s never held a job long enough to be held accountable. And, now that it has happened, I don’t think he likes it too much. He’s never had to accomplish anything other than to show up and be the cool black guy who is holding a particular job until it is time to run for the next job.

He’s also learned that there is a difference between campaigning and governing. All the campaigning and plants at union-only town halls saved Obamacare from being unpopular. If it passes by the trickery the House is considering, it will be a firestorm for the left come November.

Fact of the matter is that I think Obama has POTUS checked off on his bucket list and he intends to become UN Secretary General or some other “citizen of the world” sort of job after four years of destroying America. Which is good because I’m not so sure how popular Obama will be after four years of “No Child left a Dime” spending.

WashJeff on February 11, 2010 at 5:51 PM

My mother tried to warn me not to hang out with the wrong crowd because it would reflect badly upon me. I didn’t understand then. Seems like no one ever warned Obama. Since he spent his life hanging out with the wrong crowd he hasn’t a clue what’s wrong and how to fix it. Many pundits have written that Obama needs to find a way to govern from the center, but he thinks HE is the center! Even the left will miss George W. Bush by 2012.

Dale on February 11, 2010 at 5:53 PM

LOL!!!!!!!!!

Reid killed the bill after hearing complaints from members of his own caucus who argued that Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.) had gone too far beyond the core goal of job creation in order to win Republican support.

It was a major rebuke for Baucus, who’d spent weeks working with Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), the ranking Republican on his committee, trying to come up with a bill that Republicans would support.

Approval Poll Change…

Haiku Guy on February 11, 2010 at 5:59 PM

I find Rasmussen’s 61% (scrap it) to 28% (work from it) numbers on Obamacare to be gratifying.

For the life of me, I can’t figure out what people are thinking in the Quinny poll that prompts the following reporting:

While President Obama’s ratings on the economy and job creation remain low, voters strongly support the steps he has proposed to put Americans back to work, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University survey finds.

WTF has he proposed that will put anyone back to work? This is incomprehensible.

I look forward to reading about his numbers after it has been reported that he’s gone agnostic on middle-class tax increases. I hope the scales finally fall for any independents who haven’t abandoned him yet.

I gotta say, my leftist in-laws who were full of themselves this time last year are remarkably silent about politics now. They won’t come out and admit they were duped but they are beginning to grouse about things like taxes (last year they had the mantra that paying more in taxes was patriotic).

While they will never vote for a non-Democrat, I think they are open for another option come 2012.

Low poll numbers become poison if they stay low over a prolonged period of time. Obama could have weathered a dip into the 40s without much fear but he’s consistently polling low- even after events that are supposed to help like SOTU speeches. Democrat strategists have to be concerned. Obama is actually bringing down Democrats as they ramp up for the 2010 elections.

Nice breakdown. I’d still put blacks at 95% for Obama. And thinking aloud, I wonder in the union group whether there should be a distinction for private-sector union members and public-sector union members. The latter are 100% in Obama’s corner. Indeed, they’ll be the first in line for the fatal Kool-Aid distribution. Meanwhile, the private-sector union members might have enough of an independent streak to oppose (quietly) Obama. I couldn’t begin to speculate what percentage that might be, but I really can’t believe they’d be 100% for Obama.

My own take? It’s chaotic. People can take conservative or even liberal, but what they can’t handle is chaos.

He’s way, way too chaotic in his messages. He got by with this in the primaries due to his race. People gave him a pass.

He got by with this in the election. People really like Palin, but they were worried about her readiness. People liked McCain, but they were worried he was Bush redux.

They shifted in the last weeks to Obama.

He had a shot. He could have emerged as a good, solid president. He has fallen way short.

Palin has a shot. Same thing. Either she rises, or she won’t.

1) They more apt than not to be in those families making $250K or better, so there in line to get hit on taxes.

2) Almost every Jew I know, and I know many by relation, professes some connection and/or affinty for “the promised land”.Yet which Obama and his cadre are continually pressuring and siding agaist, & whose feckless dithering on the Iranain WMD program pointedly targeted to be aimed at Israel threatening to turn israel into a wasteland.

3) And for a people consumed with their past they are remarkably oblivious to the fact that when collectivist utopias fail to materialize, inevitavbly the collectivists look for a scape-goat. Jew are usually the first and most convenient candidates offered up for this unenvyable status.

Are these people just secretly masochists’ or what? I don’t get it.

Floor of the polling center: “…the live feed on your numbers is showing nearly 100% against, people, this can’t be right. Call the SEIU union hall and poll them right quick or this whole polling practice will look bogus”.

For the life of me, I can’t figure out what people are thinking in the Quinny poll that prompts the following reporting:

“While President Obama’s ratings on the economy and job creation remain low, voters strongly support the steps he has proposed to put Americans back to work, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University survey finds.”

WTF has he proposed that will put anyone back to work? This is incomprehensible.

BuckeyeSam on February 11, 2010 at 5:59 PM

Yeah, that’s troubling. Apparently, just calling something a “jobs bill” or saying that you’re working on creating jobs is enough to win public support.

What we need is a Republican to stand up and give an elementary lesson on job creation: government jobs do not create wealth, while private sector jobs do create wealth — how and why.

Are any of them up to the task?

He had a shot. He could have emerged as a good, solid president. He has fallen way short.

Wow…whole lotta Hand Wringing Troll Free threads today.

Figured they could use the ‘Raging Snow Storms, Bitter Cold Confirms Global Warming’ method…

Obama’s falling poll numbers just signifies he’s getting more popular all all the time.

Republicans apparently managed to win the long-term argument from those appearances — which should give them confidence in standing their ground and continuing the debate.

What? They haven’t done a thing. The GOP hasn’t shown anything! They are simply the beneficiaries of the opposition to Obama.

Are these people just secretly masochists’ or what? I don’t get it.

It might be Stockholm syndrome. Most Jewish immigrants came because of pogroms or Hitler… from Socialist Utopian societies… and then they want the same thing here! Somehow the fact that those kind of plans don’t end well for them seems not to be a consideration.

Maybe Republicans insulted them at an earlier time or something because insults can last a long time.

But they should be witnesses against Utopian socialism and yet they vote for it enmasse. It really makes no sense.
