Hope and Change: Obama open to tax hikes on middle class
posted at 4:37 pm on February 11, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
Jim Geraghty says that the expiration dates come too fast and furious to keep pace these days, but this one’s a doozy. After having insisted all along that anyone suggesting his economic policies would require middle-class tax hikes was deliberately lying, Obama suddenly proclaims himself an “agnostic” on whether imposing higher taxes on people earning under $250,000 will be necessary:
President Barack Obama said he is “agnostic” about raising taxes on households making less than $250,000 as part of a broad effort to rein in the budget deficit.
Obama, in a Feb. 9 Oval Office interview, said that a presidential commission on the budget needs to consider all options for reducing the deficit, including tax increases and cuts in spending on entitlement programs such as Social Security and Medicare.
“The whole point of it is to make sure that all ideas are on the table,” the president said in the interview with Bloomberg BusinessWeek, which will appear on newsstands Friday. “So what I want to do is to be completely agnostic, in terms of solutions.”
Obama repeatedly vowed during the 2008 presidential election campaign that he would not raise taxes on individuals making less than $200,000 and households earning less than $250,000 a year. When senior White House economic adviser Lawrence H. Summers and Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner suggested in August that the administration might be open to going back on that pledge, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs quickly reiterated the president’s promise.
We don’t need to go to Robert Gibbs to get the lowdown on Obama’s pledge. Obama made his “firm pledge” crystal clear in 2008 on the campaign trail:
“No family making less than $250,000 will see any form of tax increase. … not any of your taxes.”
What changed? Obama’s economic policies have had the effect that we predicted they would during the campaign. The White House sees trillion-plus budget deficits for most of the next ten years, thanks to massively expanding federal budgets and the drag they put on economic growth. Either Obama has to drastically reduce federal spending and the intrusion it creates in American lives, or he has to hike taxes in a broad manner to generate enough income to offset the spending. Taxing just the upper 5% isn’t an option.
Unfortunately, neither is reining in a federal budget that Democrats have already increased over a trillion dollars since taking control of Congress in 2006. They seem incapable of cutting spending, or even halting the increase of spending. Instead, they will suck more capital out of the private sector as they create a massive nanny-state system that has already failed in Europe.
Obama fooled middle-class voters into supporting him in 2008 with this pledge. Once it expires, he’s left with nothing but the reality of being another Leftist idealogue with a penchant for top-down government control.
Update: This is definitely related — my old friend Jonathan Last looks at whether Obama has a problem with blue-collar voters.

These are the famous “Reagan democrats”. They will abandon the democrats…IF…the GOP gives them a reason to. And, ahem, sitting down with democrats to draft further government intrusions into our lives is NOT a reason for them to flock to the GOP!
SouthernGent on February 11, 2010 at 4:41 PM
Am I the only one who is not surprised by this? It made no sense whatsoever to tout all the big government plans he had and then say that 95% will not have to pay extra taxes and on top of that we will get tax rebates. The math wasn’t working at all.

“READ MY LIPS…NO NEW TAXES!”
Worked out great for Bush ’41, Obambi…keep it up, Mr. One Term.
Obambi set everyone up for being suckered into more taxes by spending deficit funds like candy, then letting his MSM cheerleaders “argue” the case for higher taxes to cover the costs.
In short, Obambi raped and pillaged the economy, and you’re gonna pony up for it. Now.

Can any of us say that we are surprised by this? His whole philosophy is based on wealth confiscation for the purpose of redistribution. This should have been expected by everyone, which is why I have little sympathy for otherwise intelligent “Hope-n-Change” voters, or those who sat out last election because John McCain did not fill their requirements.

It’s not like this is the first time Bubba has had heart issues. I did think this is interesting:
Sources on Capital Hill tell ABC News that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was seen leaving the Oval Office a short time ago and did not seem “too concerned” or “in a rush.”
It is commonly known that Clinton has not been faithful in the years after leaving office. I honestly think that there will be a divorce once Hillary is sure that she will never be POTUS.

I grow more afraid everyday, that utter economic collapse is the only possible outcome of the course that we are on.
The Democrats will never permit more than a token in spending cuts, and the nation is pretty much maxed out when it comes to taxes. Raising taxes will generate little if any new revenue.
We patriots need to be discussing what will be needed in the next constitution to try and keep this disaster from happening again.

So, he is now unwilling to commit to an an opinion about a middle class tax hike. Sounds as though he is pulling a reverse Kerry: Being against something before he is (maybe) for it.
To bad he isn’t becoming an agnostic about his ability to actually act Presidential.

I think Clinton’s legacy of the 9/11/01 attacks is pretty much his due. 3,000 human beings were incinerated in one morning because Clinton was more interested in having sex with interns than he was in doing his job. I don’t wish him to die but I’m afraid I’ll have to stop short of saying a prayer for the man.

Obama raising taxes on the middle class wouldn’t exactly be a shocker. Most of us predicted it during the campaign. Palin mentioned it in her convention speech. People in his administration like Geithner have refused to rule it out. And the clearest sign that he’s planning to jack up everyone’s taxes is the bipartisan committee he wants to set up to deal with the deficit. He needs as much cover as possible when he announces to the American people that he’s violating his signature campaign promise.

Cindy Munford on February 11, 2010 at 5:00 PM
More like voting present. If Congress gives him a budget that includes tax hikes, he’ll point to them as the ones who broke the campaign promise of no tax hikes. Of course it was always a lie because he is letting the Bush tax cuts to expire so the middle class gets a double dose of “eff you” from the filthy lying coward in the White House.
highhopes on February 11, 2010 at 5:01 PM
Who would have thought that Obama’s answer to this mess he has created would be more taxes, unless of course, you don’t pay any taxes. Those folks need a redistributive justice policy that spreads the wealth.
Does anyone think they can tax their way out of this mess? I guess if he tries, he will certainly be a one termer.

Seven Percent Solution on February 11, 2010 at 5:04 PM
It took him all of what, 3 months?, to break that promise. I realize I’m in the minority being one of those “filthy smokers”, but since I make less than $250k per year, I’m pretty sure I saw my taxes go up significantly last year.
darury on February 11, 2010 at 5:05 PM
The fact of the matter is that the only solution to this budgetary problem is to stop some of the massive entitlement programs that comprise something like 60% of the budget. It will take adults willing to make hard choices, which of course, won’t happen so long as a thin-skinned manchild is playing President along with his Chicago cronies.
I used to like Chicago but I’m beginning to hate them for inflicting this administration on America.

Obama will say he didn’t know how bad the economy was, and just had to spend all that money to make it better, and now just has to raise taxes to offset the deficit, because this is a problem he inherited.

unclesmrgol on February 11, 2010 at 5:11 PM
This is just a start. The middle class and the nonprofits are where the money is. He wants to get rid of IRAs and have people contribute to a government pension fund wiht a guaranteed rate (fund soon to be filled with IOUs). When you die, your heirs get 50% of the fund. (You know where the rest goes.)
He also wants to starve nonprofit charities for money by taking away the deduction for high-earners and siphoning off volunteers with his SERVE Act.
Wethal on February 11, 2010 at 5:12 PM
So Obama is “open” to tax increases on the middle class. Please, everyone except welfare recipients and day laborers will be subject to higher taxes.
Phil Byler on February 11, 2010 at 5:13 PM
Say the prayer anyway. 9/11 was not Clinton’s fault — that’s like blaming the pedestrian in the crosswalk for the SUV that comes barreling around the corner. Whether or not the pedestrian is facing a “walk” or a “don’t walk”, the guy driving the truck is still at fault.
unclesmrgol on February 11, 2010 at 5:14 PM
That was the plan from the beginning. Why do you think the jobs bill is pretty much nothing but an extension of unemployment benefits? The plan from the beginning was to make people totally reliant on government because then government has the power and if the people want to continue to get “free” money, they’ll have to vote for the right people.
MobileVideoEngineer on February 11, 2010 at 5:18 PM
Are there really adults in this country who believed a democrat president wasn’t going to raise their taxes? They must be the same folks who voted for Obama cuz they thought he was a “moderate.” You can’t fix stupid.
Rational Thought on February 11, 2010 at 5:18 PM
He already is saying that. When he published his budget he claimed that he had no choice but to spend all of this money because of how messed up the country was because of Bush. I would bet that he blames the upcoming tax increases on Bush saying that he had no choice. My guess that every bad thing that happens in the future will be Bush’s fault, while every good thing will be because of his wise and benevolent leadership.
txaggie on February 11, 2010 at 5:18 PM
Sorry but you are wrong. Clinton’s eight years were filled with incidents like the first WTC bombing- all dealt with as criminal acts, not terrorism. He was offered OBL but declined. He eased immigration laws to the point that 19 terrorists had no problem entering and staying in the US long enough to launch an attack…..
Clinton was lax on national security and 3,000 human beings were killed. It really is that clear.
