CBS: Obama’s bipartisanship call is really demand for GOP surrender
posted at 8:48 am on February 10, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
The only thing surprising about this analysis of Barack Obama’s call for bipartisanship is that it comes from CBS — although the reporter, Mark Knoller, has quietly become a good read in the White House press corps. Knoller gives a biting report on Obama’s actual intentions and the desperation leading to it, but it won’t really come as shocking news to anyone in the GOP. The Democratic definition of bipartisanship has been the same since Bill Clinton demanded it for his own government takeover of health care:
It was more a plaintive plea than a political observation. His top legislative priorities are going nowhere and he’s searching for a way to get them out of lockup.
In this 13th month of his presidency, he’s anxious to pass a jobs bill and be seen addressing an unemployment rate that only last week declined from double digits. And his efforts to enact bills on energy, financial regulatory reform and especially health care are stuck in Congress despite the solid majority his party holds in both chambers.
He’s appealing for a spirit of bipartisanship – urging Democrats and Republicans alike “to put aside matters of party for the good of the country.” …
Mr. Obama said he “won’t hesitate to embrace a good idea from my friends in the minority party.” But he wants his way. He wants his energy policy enacted along with his jobs bill, his financial regulatory reform and his health care plan.
And if the opposition continues to block his objectives, he said he “won’t hesitate to condemn what I consider to be obstinacy that’s rooted not in substantive disagreement but in political expedience.”
When a sitting president calls for bipartisanship by the opposition – he really means surrender. And if they block his proposals, its “obstinacy” and not political views they hold as strongly as he holds his.
At one point in his analysis, Knoller mentions that the first President Bush made the same kind of call in 1990, but Knoller forgets to mention that Bush actually followed through on his claim to bipartisanship to enact a tax hike Democrats demanded. Bush had promised during the 1988 presidential campaign that he would follow in Ronald Reagan’s footsteps and not increase taxes (although Reagan did sign a tax hike), using the phrase “Read my lips — no new taxes!” What was Bush’s reward for that bipartisanship? Democrats used that clip in commercial after commercial in 1992 to call Bush a liar, even though they had demanded it from him.
For Democrats, the definition of bipartisanship has always been Republican surrender. That was true in 1990, and it was true in 1992, and it’s still true today. The surprise here isn’t the intent of Obama to use bipartisanship to bulldozer GOP opposition to his agenda, but that the media finally reports it as such — and perhaps especially at CBS.

What you hear is a few at CBS waking up to the fact that, if there is to be a jobs-created-or-saved for them personally, they had better turn around their ratings. Obama is not going to save them.
Re the Repubs and bipartisanship: take a few buckets of sand and some hammers to the meeting. Present them to Obama.

And on top of everything, Obama wants his energy policy passed? Is he joking? Any GOP member who even thinks about that economy-killer should be removed from office. You hear that Lindsey Graham?!
ROCnPhilly on February 10, 2010 at 9:59 AM
So how’d all that water carrying for the administration work out for ya, CBS? Feeling a little foolish now that none of the promises materialized? Tired of the lies about transparency and bipartisanship? How about the spending, like the spending? Like those FOX news ratings?

No meeting, unless the Dems publicly agree to scrap the healthcare legislation. The American people have empowered the GOP to stand tough and rid us of this terrible legislation. Empowerment is a terrible thing to waste.

It would be ashamed not take advantage of the goodwill the Republicans have garnered through this mess. It looks like the press may be more willing to look at thier suggestions also. The word “comprehensive” needs to be taken off the table.

I have made this observation before, this sums it up for me.
The Dems, want some political “Cover” this is an election year. I don’t think the Republicans are in a politically suicidal mood. I could be wrong but they don’t look like they want to spend decades frozen out of power.

When your adversaries are busy destroying themselves, the smartest position is to stay out of their way.
Dr Evil on February 10, 2010 at 10:38 AM
Given the help some in the MSM are giving them, the GOP could set the context for the meeting with repeateds
“This is empty theatre. Obama does not intend to seriously negotiate. But we have to send someone because protocol requires a response to a presidential invitation.”
Make it clear ahead of time that this is a joke.

Obama: D@mn those obstinate voters who substantively disagree with the Great I am! Who do they think they are? They owe My Majesty a trillion dollars for health care I will generously provide them four years from now! How dare that opposition party stir up that rabble of peons of the US of KKK A for political expendience?
Let them eat cake!

Harry and Nancy are probably not quite to a deal yet, regardless of what Harkin claims. Obama needs the summit to nudge them along, claiming it will give nervous Dems the “bipartisan” cover or if the GOP won’t deal, the Dems can run on the Party of No theme.
The more the GOP represents this summit as a joke, the less leverage Harry and Nancy get. And if the GOP is proud to say No to socialized medicine, huge deficits and weak national security, that meme is lost, too.
Wethal on February 10, 2010 at 10:44 AM
Agreed!!! Look what George W. Bush got for his “comprehensive” Social Security reform, “comprehensive” immigration reform, and “comprehensive” energy reform. Nothing!
Which is what Obama deserves for his “comprehensive” health care reform!
The GOP should put out some common-sense proposals which have broad support from the people (tort reform, purchase across state lines, no refusal for pre-existing conditions) and say NO to socialized medicine and huge Medicare cuts. These all-or-nothing “comprehensive” deals cost too much and hurt too many people to ever pass Congress.

Mark Knoller better look both ways before crossing the street. Especially for any black SUVs.

They smell the blood in the water and know the Dems are in for a rude shock come November. CBS was fine with airing fake memos when they thought Kerry was going to win but has no motiviation to continue lying for this administration which has essentially been a lame duck from the very beginning due to thier own anti-American radical agenda.

The GOP MUST dig in their heels and tell the President, “Nuts!”
I doubt he’ll get it.
I wonder if the GOP does.
dogsoldier on February 10, 2010 at 11:15 AM
I really don’t see the GOP going against the American People right now. Espically with elections coming up soon, they know if they vote for anything of Zero’s their job is out the door. I think there are a few in the GOP that are listening and telling others becareful of what you say and do because the people may be coming after you.

To quote a line from a play that I like a lot:
Speaking of trial combat between lawyers, but I think it has application to the situation in which the Incredible Sinking POTUS finds himself vis-a-vis the R Party.

We have to go back to Obama training ground. Organizing a bunch of people to go to banks, government offices, etc. to demand their rightful share of the booty.
The powers that be would mostly give in because they didn’t want the bad PR.
Now he’s going to try to shake down the R’s. They’ll have to be strong. Shake downs depend on people being afraid.
Are the R’s afraid? The press/Left will be in full attack mode.
I saw a poodle from ABC News saying that Obama has to get Something or is first year is in ruins.
Storyline: R’s try to destroy Obama’s Presidency for partison gain.

Moving from blaming GW Bush for everything, to blaming the GOP for everything.
Not bright, probably most Americans are grateful for the GOP being the ‘party of NO’ right now.

Remember in Office Space when Peter says because his job keeps getting worse, every day you see him, that’s the worst day of his life?
This presidency is doing that to Obama.

I hope to goodness that the GOP realizes the insincerity of the Libs. This is a trick, and maybe someone is wise enough to handle Obama and the MSM.

GOP to Obama – We have no interest in a Government takeover of Healthcare. You couldn’t get it passed without us, what makes you think you’re going to get it passed with us? Your oppose your bill, get it?
At least that’s what they should say. Boehner sits up there and talks too much, he needs to learn to wrap things up in one nice little soundbyte.

I don’t know how to start one of these but, I am going to call email my representatvies and simply tell them to start over on health care. that is my only message.
I can only ask other readers to do the same.

I don’t subscribe to the conventional wisdom that that doomed Bush Sr. His problem was that he was a globalist who mismanaged the disintegration of the USSR (giving a huge amount of power and US sovereignty over to the UN at precisely the time when the UN had to be disbanded) and refused to handle Iraq correctly, as anyone with a brain understood, the minute that Saddam Hussein intentionally dumped 40,000,000 barrels of oil into the gulf and lit just about every single oil well in Kuwait on fire, all as he was being allowed to retreat in one of the most humilitating military defeats of all time, that he could not be allowed to remain in control of one of the strategically sensitive areas of the world.
BTW, Saddam’s defeat and scorched-Earth strategy are almost identical to the Dems’ attempts to scorch our federal government as they are being allowed to retreat after the amazingly humiliating defeats they have been handed.
