Anti-Palin Faux-troversy of the Day: The Black Bracelet
posted at 7:31 pm on February 10, 2010 by Legal Insurrection
I thank Yale Graduate School student Eric Robinson for his service to the country in Iraq and Afghanistan. But Robinson’s hit piece on Sarah Palin, Palin’s bigger blunder, leads me to believe Robinson has succumbed to the New Haven funny water, either that, or he is spending too much time with Bruce Ackerman over at the law school.
Robinson writes that Palin has shown contempt for the memory of fallen soldiers by wearing a black metal bracelet (see photo) with the name of her son living son Track on it:
The name on her black memorial bracelet — one, like the gold star, a demonstration of a friend or associate who was killed in action — is that of her oldest son, Track. Track served honorably in Iraq, and both he and his parents should be thanked for his selfless service to his country. He is also alive.
Commemorating Track’s service by wearing a a black memorial bracelet which is reserved for those dead or even a red bracelet for those missing in action, demonstrates a horrifying contempt for those who gave their last full measure of devotion or an almost unbelievable ignorance of the importance of symbols in American history.
Unfortunately, given Palin’s reputation and frequent public statements, I assume it is the latter.
Needless to say, this gotcha is making Robinson something of a hero. Political Carnival proclaims: “Not only did she mega-embarrass herself again, she did it tastelessly… Barbie wears live people. And the humiliation continues….” Taegen Goddard’s Political Wire has picked up the story, as has James Joyner (neither one expressed a view on the propriety of wearing the product).
It may be that wearing a black wrist band with a fallen soldier’s name on it is a common method of honoring that soldier, but a simple internet search demonstrates that that is not the exclusive use of black wrist bands.
The Trophy House sells a black metal bracelet which it calls the Soldiers’ Deployment Bracelet:
Let the world know that your loved one is serving abroad in the United States Armed Forces.
These bracelets are currently available in two styles. We have the silver bracelet, made of highly durable .05 gauge scratch-resistant stainless steel. And the black bracelet made of black aluminum.
The engraving on the bracelet includes the soldier’s name, the unit served in, and the date of their deployment. These bracelets are guaranteed not to fade. Wear it with pride while your loved one defends our liberties and freedom!
Palin’s wearing a black metal bracelet with her son’s name on it would seem to be consistent with honoring his deployment.
To make the leap from Palin wearing a commonly available deployment bracelet to Palin having contempt for fallen soldiers is both a bridge too far and a bridge to nowhere.
Just because an item is used for one purpose, doesn’t mean that such use is exclusive to that purpose. I hope they teach such concepts at Yale, because you will need them when you enter the real world, and even more so when you enter politics.
Cross-Posted with updates at Legal Insurrection Blog
Update (Ed): C4P says the bracelet isn’t even black anyway, but bronze.
Update II (Ed): Mary Katharine Ham confirms that the bracelet is bronze — with the organization that gave it to Palin in the first place. They also gave one to Joe Biden for his son.

The Mess-in-chief is in freefall and dragging the whole country down with him, and people have time to worry if Palin is wearing the correct color bracelet… Worthless and weak.

You, sir, demonstrate contempt for the fallen heroes by dragging their honorable memories through the sick mud of your political hit job. As an alleged veteran, you should be ashamed of yourself!

When did fashion accessories become “one of the most recognizable symbols of grief”? The Washington Post today highlighted the funeral of a Marine killed in Afghanistan. No mention whatsoever of wrist wear. The reality is that the whole wristband thing which was so significant when it was about Vietnam POWs has lost any meaning when every cause has a wristband, a special color, and a magnetic ribbon for the car. It is all without the same meaning that the symbology that “gold star mothers” had in the past.

This reminds me of a StarTrek episode.
“On stardate 5730.2, the Enterprise is on a mission to help decontaminate the polluted atmosphere of the planet Ariannus when sensors track a Federation shuttlecraft reported stolen from Starbase 4. The craft is disabled and brought aboard along with its strange alien pilot who is found injured and taken to sickbay. The man later awakens and identifies himself as Lokai — a political refugee from the planet Cheron who requests asylum. Lokai’s most striking feature is that his skin is half black and half white, the two halves split perfectly down the center of his body. His unique physiology is explained by Mr. Spock as possibly being “one of a kind”.
Shortly thereafter, sensors detect another spacecraft in fast pursuit of the Enterprise. Curiously, the craft remains invisible to all but sensors and sets itself on a direct collision course with the ship. Moments later, Spock reports the invisible craft has disintegrated and deposited an “alien presence” aboard the ship. Kirk turns to see the alien pilot who has beamed himself directly to the bridge. The second alien identifies himself as Bele.
Like Lokai, Bele is half black and half white, with the color divided by a line through the exact center of his face. However, the sides of Bele’s black and white skin are reversed from those of Lokai, a difference which seems inconsequential to the Enterprise crew but of great importance to Bele, Lokai, and, apparently, their civilization. The difference is pointed out by Bele to a perplexed Captain Kirk who asks what is the difference between them, to which he replies, “Isn’t it obvious? Lokai is white on the right side. All his people are white on the right side.”"
So, my question is: “Is Eric Robinson, Bele or Lokai?”

Taegan Goddard also has an update, in case this wasn’t posted earlier:
Update: HeroBracelets.org claims they sent Palin the bracelet.
http://www.herobracelets.org/?p=3256
Back in 2008, we had heard that both Sarah Palin’s son and now Vice President Joseph Biden’s son were heading off on deployements, so we made them both a set of Deployed HeroBracelets with their son’s names on the bracelets. Our way for thanking them both for having son’s in the military. We actually got a very nice call from Senator Biden’s office, thanking us for the HeroBracelets. And now we’re quite proud to see Sarah Palin wearing her HeroBracelet.

Technically, BDD (Bracelet Dysmorphic Disorder) is a Somatoform Disorder as per the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition. It specifically involves an excessive preoccupation with one or more physical characteristics of a bracelet. Although this condition is classified as a Somatoform Disorder, it shares many similarities with OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder ) in that individuals with both conditions experience obsessions and compulsions relating to appearance. For example, someone with BDD may have a compulsion to repeatedly check the way a bracelet looks under different lighting conditions. Individuals with BDD have obsessions about either an imaginary defect in the appearance of a bracelet or an exaggeration of a defect in appropriateness that to others seems inconsequential. Unique to BDD, the obsession or preoccupation regarding this imaginary or exaggerated defect predominates any other obsession. Even more than with OCD, the belief in the defect is very strongly held. Individuals with BDD may believe so strongly in the perceived defect that they can appear virtually delusional.

When caught in a slanderous, manufactured lie about Palin, it’s then time to say it was her own idiocy for carelessly causing the slanderer to be confused, because, really, she is just so stupid, after all, and it’s actually reasonable to assume she would be as dumb as you presume her to be, even if she wasn’t… this time.
(Just ask Roger “King of the Movie Boobs” Ebert.)

Speaking as a private clinician, I’ve noticed a very high incidence of BDD in patients who also suffer from PDS, as well as BDS and other forms of acute leftism. It’s usually a case of malignant liberalism brought on during childhood, and can be surprisingly difficult to treat. The experience of being mugged has often been quite effective and occasionally leads to a complete remission. Also, long-term exposure to Democratic governance can have a similar therapeutic effect, though I tend to avoid that avenue of treatment, as the side effects can be rather severe, and even fatal.
RINO in Name Only on February 10, 2010 at 9:26 PM

From the war for Independence, up until this point, brave men ,and women have gone to battle in defense of this nation. Right, or wrong, these soldiers fought, and fight bravely, and to protect the freedoms, and liberties we enjoy today. And to wish any one of them dead, is to wish away the very things they fight to preserve.
I pray for those who feel this way, and I pray that they NEVER know what they are truly wishing for. To wish away those who fight for us, is to wish away the very thing that makes us free.

Robinson has updated his piece.
Author’s Note: In my column in the News Wednesday, I criticized former Alaska governor Sarah Palin for wearing a black memorial bracelet with her son’s name on it, as Track returned unharmed from Iraq last fall. However, Sarah Palin’s bracelet was not black; instead, it was a dark brown “DeployedHero” bracelet worn by those who have loved ones currently serving in the military. The bracelet is different from the black one associated with men and women who are killed in action overseas. Recognizing this, I apologize to the governor and to any reader who might have been misled by my piece. I hope that this serves as an important lesson for anyone interested in the importance of these symbols.

Palin dishonors the fallen troops? (Cue the bearded Spock, people.)
Probably a result of that strange Leftist trope that their opposition cannot honestly hold their own opinions in any considered way – that it is not possible to come to a different conclusion.
It’s why I don’t bother to argue the facts with leftists anymore, you can’t argue facts with someone whose premise is that they’re right and you’re wrong. You need to get to the premise or you’re just spinning your wheels.

You were jumped on because you were wrong. We civilians are the ones wearing these bracelets, and we wear them for many reasons — not just the POW/MIA original reason. As one commenter has already noted, there’s a bracelet for every cause. This is just one example of a commemorative bracelet for those who are alive and who were serving at the point at which the bracelet was made. There are many companies making these bracelets — they’re called prayer bracelets, deployment bracelets, military charm bracelets…
It helps those who wear same show a connection to a loved one.
That is the manner in which Mrs. Palin wore hers. Now, you can do the same thing that the author of the article discussed did — apologize — or you can continue down your own stubborn path. It’s your choice.

If we’re going to have a war over every piece of Palin trivia that comes down the pike I can all but guarantee that half the country including a sizable portion of Republicans/conservatives are simply going to wash their hands of her from sheer battle fatigue. In fact it wouldn’t surprise me if anti-Palinistas instinctively aim to bait people like some of the commenters on this thread into invective that will be turned against her by association. If she is smart she will devote herself to articulating policy goals and not let herself get dragged into these inane skirmishes. Her problem is that two thirds of voters still don’t take her fully seriously as a presidential aspirant (assuming she is or intends to be one). She is in fact a moderately conservative Republican woman who has got to reach out beyond her populist core constituency and the best way to do that is to develop and widely publicize reasonably detailed proposals that address the whole electorate.
Seth Halpern on February 11, 2010 at 12:43 AM
Sarah could lay a wreath at the foot of an 80 year old female veteran and the left would find a way to say that she did it because when in her 70′s, the woman told an unnamed associate: “I’ve never done it, but if I do and I get pregnant, I’ll keep the baby.”
Good Lord, these folks are pathetic!
BTW: Hi Mom! Yup, she’s been gone a number of years, but, “Hi Mom!”
Chewy the Lab on February 11, 2010 at 12:55 AM
I believe that’s called being a conservative. They called Reagan a stupid, dangerous cowboy. Bush was chimpy McHitler. Sarah Palin was Caribou Barbie.
If a conservative is going to give up until they find a candidate that won’t get ‘The Treatment’ then they should look to Andrew Sullivan as their next candidate. Someone who will safely lose the election to the Democrats. If they actually want to win, then they will have to deal with the Democrats as they really are. They will fight every step of the way.

He made sure that he didn’t research any of the facts in the piece and winged it from the get go. 3. He slammed Palin without knowing her or asking any questions of her for her side of the story. 4. And finally he almost apologized and in the process still made his victim look like she had really done something bad.
I am proud of Mr. Robinson for he will be an asset to the fine tradition of the MSM journalist!

Alert the mainstream media Pul-ease!
Sarah Palin HATES–I tell you–HATES soldiers of ANY KIND (S’pecially if they are members of the US military!!)
Tell all your friends!!! Make sure they know that this is a dangerous woman who is OUT TO GET OUR SOLDIERS!!!!
She is wearing a WRISTBAND for God’s Sake! And, furthermore, IT APPEARS TO BE BLACK!
A contributor to the Puffington Toast (who prefers to remain unanimous)fears that hate crimes will be committed, and soon!
This person, who requested anonymity, guardedly told our reporter: “I’ve been called an idiot by many, and though I may resemble that remark, I challenge my detractors to show how it isn’t true, if even in the slightest.
Furthermore, if I wanted to be an effing idiot, noone would have the right to stop me or should say otherwise without me saying it’s like, kinda ok.”
Stay tuned to see how this developing story, er…develops like a prepubescent girl.

Hair
Glasses
Shoes
Daughters
Husband
Toenails
Clothes
Hands
Can we call them all sexist now????

I thought the difference is that no one pays any attention to Joe Biden.

I’m sorry but this is NOT about checking your facts or anything of the kind. It’s pure unadulterated stupidity.
Whether or not one “likes” Sarah Palin, do you not know enough “about” the woman (uh, particularly since you purport to know virtually everything about her, including what she’s thinking at any given moment) to understand that even suggesting she would denigrate fallen service men and women is so ludicrous that it makes a fool only of the one who says it. Or, in the more familiar version… “You’ve GOT to be kidding me!”
Take her on for her policies if you don’t agree. But, really, to question her patriotism or to suggest that she’d denigrate the very service to which her son is devoted is to demonstrate such an ignorance of her and her family that anyone suggesting such a thing should be sent to China and prevented from Blogging other than to support dildos made in China for a term of not less than 20 years, and not more than oh, a lot. Just go away.
What a dumb s*** (a/k/a person).

I really don’t understand the American left and it’s hatred of the US Military.
If someone showed disrespect for the Australian Defence Forces they would be shown as treasonous and unpatriotic.
What’s the difference?

I’ve thought that for a long time. With the press and Sarah Palin, it’s the death of a thousand cuts. It doesn’t matter if very few of the cuts are fair or warranted, they still ultimately do damage. But, come on, it started early.
I remember even before the election was held, the prominent political expert Pam Anderson was asked about what she thought about the Governor from Alaska having a bear hide in her office. She said, “I can’t stand her. She can suck it”. (Which is funny considering the videos I understand you can find of Ms. Anderson herself on line with a simple Google search). But to be so visceral and mean really requires a depth of emotion that I’ve frankly never felt for any politician. I don’t understand it and I don’t know if our country can survive this kind of hate.

Good post. Stay safe hawkdriver. The tide is turning. Its a good thing the fringe left has gone over the top. They are obviously frayed at the edges, symptomatic of impending demise, banishment into obscurity. Payback is long over due.
America has awakened, the rational majority will overwhelm them with the force of renewed passions. We are all in this game to win.
The ground swell is on our side. God Bless.
