Anti-Palin Faux-troversy of the Day: The Black Bracelet

posted at 7:31 pm on February 10, 2010 by Legal Insurrection

I thank Yale Graduate School student Eric Robinson for his service to the country in Iraq and Afghanistan.  But Robinson’s hit piece on Sarah Palin, Palin’s bigger blunder, leads me to believe Robinson has succumbed to the New Haven funny water, either that, or he is spending too much time with Bruce Ackerman over at the law school.

Robinson writes that Palin has shown contempt for the memory of fallen soldiers by wearing a black metal bracelet (see photo) with the name of her son living son Track on it:

The name on her black memorial bracelet — one, like the gold star, a demonstration of a friend or associate who was killed in action — is that of her oldest son, Track. Track served honorably in Iraq, and both he and his parents should be thanked for his selfless service to his country. He is also alive.

Commemorating Track’s service by wearing a a black memorial bracelet which is reserved for those dead or even a red bracelet for those missing in action, demonstrates a horrifying contempt for those who gave their last full measure of devotion or an almost unbelievable ignorance of the importance of symbols in American history.

Unfortunately, given Palin’s reputation and frequent public statements, I assume it is the latter.

Needless to say, this gotcha is making Robinson something of a hero. Political Carnival proclaims: “Not only did she mega-embarrass herself again, she did it tastelessly… Barbie wears live people. And the humiliation continues….” Taegen Goddard’s Political Wire has picked up the story, as has James Joyner (neither one expressed a view on the propriety of wearing the product).

It may be that wearing a black wrist band with a fallen soldier’s name on it is a common method of honoring that soldier, but a simple internet search demonstrates that that is not the exclusive use of black wrist bands.

The Trophy House sells a black metal bracelet which it calls the Soldiers’ Deployment Bracelet:

Let the world know that your loved one is serving abroad in the United States Armed Forces.

These bracelets are currently available in two styles. We have the silver bracelet, made of highly durable .05 gauge scratch-resistant stainless steel. And the black bracelet made of black aluminum.

The engraving on the bracelet includes the soldier’s name, the unit served in, and the date of their deployment. These bracelets are guaranteed not to fade. Wear it with pride while your loved one defends our liberties and freedom!

Palin’s wearing a black metal bracelet with her son’s name on it would seem to be consistent with honoring his deployment.

To make the leap from Palin wearing a commonly available deployment bracelet to Palin having contempt for fallen soldiers is both a bridge too far and a bridge to nowhere.

Just because an item is used for one purpose, doesn’t mean that such use is exclusive to that purpose. I hope they teach such concepts at Yale, because you will need them when you enter the real world, and even more so when you enter politics.

Cross-Posted with updates at Legal Insurrection Blog

Update (Ed): C4P says the bracelet isn’t even black anyway, but bronze.

Update II (Ed): Mary Katharine Ham confirms that the bracelet is bronze — with the organization that gave it to Palin in the first place.  They also gave one to Joe Biden for his son.

Deliberate lying and smearing.

I hope Mr. Robinson does a better job researching his thesis than he did on black braceletts, but I gotta feeling he won’t. But that’s okay, Yale will gladly take his money as he pursues a decade long graduate degree program.

Burn in hell, Eugene Robinson.

Eric Robinson picked a liberal indoctrination University to continue his education. That was his first mistake. Just proves your schooling doesn’t create intelligence.

gud thing we got thems smartt yalies to tell us dumb white trailer park trash what is rite and rong, and how stoopid sarah palin is.

what a bunch of haters. like she would really wear a bracelet commemorating the death of her son, who is currently serving in Iraq.

Funny that he called this Palin’s *bigger* blunder. So, apparently writing on her hand wasn’t so bad, after all.

Looking closely at the bracelet in the picture, it looks more bronze than black, to me.

But oh, how delusional most of the posters over there are–and they say we’re full of hate?

I particularly enjoyed these comments:

There are several angles of the bracelet in the posted photos and it definitely is black. It’s not copper.

Definately BLACK…

No wonder they think everything is racist…they see black even where it doesn’t exist.

Hate, don’t verify. The motto of even our “best and brightest.”

The tempered and thoughtful lines he used to critique Palin: “horrifying contempt for our military..” “unbelievable ignorance…”

Here’s a good response to the whole thing.
I think a trend is starting. It was not my original idea, and maybe someone here has already posted something like this. I think her supporters need to mark “Palin 2012″ on their palms and wave them around every chance we get, until there are millions of these waving at her on in DC as she takes the oath of office!
http://jellytoast.wordpress.com/

JellyToast on February 11, 2010 at 9:59 AM

And another one of those geniuses criticizing the dummy Sarah Palin. This guy goes to Yale? When I was in graduate school for Comparative Religion scholarship the first thing I was warned about: don’t jump to conclusions based upon limited information and personal perspective — even if it comes from an authority in the field. I guess that must be for post Graduate students at Yale. What is wrong with these people? To have an idea that something is amiss with some data you observe (the bracelet) but to not perform due diligence before commiting to writing and again besmirching the reputation of a person is unbecoming a scholar of any sort. If he is truly a person of honor, I hope he posts a retraction soon.

SurferDoc on February 11, 2010 at 10:27 AM

Once upon a time there was a rule in journalism that if you can’t confirm something you don’t report it. Perhaps the mentally lazy and ethically libertine Eric “Duranty” Robinson could learn from that advice? I doubt it.

viking01 on February 11, 2010 at 10:31 AM

Yale Daily News UPDATED Robinson’s retraction, acknowledging Palin’s bracelet is dark brown, not black.

Being aware of symbolism matters when a politician chooses to wear emblems. There is no offense becoming aware of traditions. And similar to the “stolen valor” Leftist story, this one explains what black bracelets symbolize for our fallen heroes for whom none here would want forgotten or to be ignorant of ceremonial tradition.

This brings me back to my issue with Palin.

Sarah Palin, please take off the bracelet. Be thankful you have no reason to wear it.

Eric Robinson is a first-year graduate student in international relations. He is a veteran of both the Iraq War and the war in Afghanistan.

Author’s Note: In my column in the News Wednesday, I criticized former Alaska governor Sarah Palin for wearing a black memorial bracelet with her son’s name on it, as Track returned unharmed from Iraq last fall. However, Sarah Palin’s bracelet was not black; instead, it was a dark brown “DeployedHero” bracelet worn by those who have loved ones currently serving in the military. The bracelet is different from the black one associated with men and women who are killed in action overseas. Recognizing this, I apologize to the governor and to any reader who might have been misled by my piece. I hope that this serves as an important lesson for anyone interested in the importance of these symbols.

To those who counsel not to “let it go”, I say that Mr. Robinson is young, a veteran, and a -someday, maybe- potential political ally. I would prefer, as a conservative, to be cautiously conciliatory with an adversary who can admit a mistake, rather than belligerant and drive him deeper into entrenched opposition. This is not war; it’s politics. If you want to believe, like Mao, that all politics comes from the barrel of a gun, please move to China.

It is absolutely stunning how hard the left attacks a person who isn’t:

1) An elected official, or

2) Currently running for election

Are they that afraid of what the ‘Cuda represents? An idea so powerful and dangerous to communsim and socialism that it must be “aborted”?

I think the answer is “yes”.

BTW, Eugenus Maximus Robinson, Hero of the Two Wars, has apologized.

Now that you’ve been wounded in the Palin War, give yourself the Purple Yellow Heart.

War, in the sense that the preceding posters used it, does not mean violence, but rather a battle (politics is nothing if not a battle) of ideas and philosophies.

When one’s enemy begins to misbehave and then is suitably chastened, it can be let go.

When misbehavior turns into serial smearing, you grab it, throttle it, and refuse to let up, or it will grow to a crescendo and be that much harder to be heard against. That is the scenario now, so, by all means, make the man feel the weight of his idiocy.

In any event, it was a pretty low blow to a person, to claim that they are using their son, a soldier, as a political tool to garner sympathy. Without class, without honor.

Okay let us get this straight, the Left can get their knickers in a twist over a bracelet, but they cannot muster any outrage over how long it took President Q-tip to send re-enforcements to Afghanistan?

The more I thought about this last night the madder I got. Where is the media outrage over Ft. Hood? Where is the outrage over the ROE our soldiers are forced to adhere to which endanger their lives? Hello!

Where was the media or morons like this kid when it came to Code Pink parading around with Hamas carrying signs stating they wish our soldiers would die? But no, the Left has to zero in on a bracelet Sarah Palin is wearing and then falsely accusing her of some serious error!

Point well made.

What I’m trying to do is truly consider the source. Yes, a big East Coast, Ivy League school is a bastion of our enemy. But, Eric Robinson is not of the professoriate; he is a student. And he writes in a student newspaper, not Newsweek.

I agree that he engaged in deplorable behavior, and he should “feel the weight of his idiocy”, but I do not wish to damn him past the point of redemption.

Well said, clarifications called for. We are absolutely at war, and it was made on us and America by the Left. We can refer to Mao, or Clausewitz or Patton or Sun Tzu for our varying interpretations and responses, but the fact remains a war – often a recondite one waged mostly in the realm of rhetoric and ideas but no less a war — against the premises of America has been going on for decades and is now reaching a more open state (to which we should be glad — maybe now we can engage it at all levels). I appreciate that you seek conciliation with Mr. Robinson with an eye toward his conversion. Very admirable and gentlemanly. But in terms of the people we are fighting, ineffectual. I’d suggest that Mr. Robinson and those like him would be more impressed by our awareness of the larger movement which has swept them up and by our combative refusal to “move on” or “let go” but to hold them to the fire. I do not suggest a personal war of character destruction against Mr. Robinson, but simply a relentlessness in reminding him and the Left of their offenses that is equal to their own relentlessness in making them. It is not so much to embarrass and shame them (though that is good and useful) but to force them to understand that the old paradigm of hapless conservative acquiesance and defensive appeals for comity is over and that they have a ferocious adversary no longer willing to accept their viciousness but instead willing to return fire in the name of what is right, and that they will suffer and lose for their slanders.

FIFY.

If you don’t think that’s true, get caught committing the crime of putting food in your garbage disposal in San Francisco and you can be punished. And that punishment is enforceable by the police, who carry guns.

War and politics is a continuum. The cop with his gun drawn aresting you for not composting is enforcing laws which began as legislation, much of which is Marxist in intent.

One way not to get shot for living life as you want is to oppose legislation that would enslave you, like cap and trade or OboobaCare. We don’t shoot congressmen who vote for bad laws, but their agents might shoot you for breaking their laws.

Eric Robinson et al are trying to kill Palin’s career because they want to enslave us and they see her as a threat to their plans. So why don’t you turn your weapon on the enemy and away from your comrades, champ?

It’s another thing entirely to use those incorrect facts to paint someone as a moron based on your own prejudices–and that’s just what Robinson did. He made a complete jerk out of himself and needs to be called on it, regardless of his retraction. Trust me, it was like swallowing a jagged little pill for him to have to admit he was wrong because he truly believes Palin is a moron and this was his proof of that. There ya go. Compare those who disagree with you to Mao. That kind of stupidity belongs at DKos.

SKYFOX on February 11, 2010 at 12:27 PM

I did not compare “those who disagree” with me to Mao. I was making a statement objecting to treating domestic politics as literal war. The comment author whom I was addressing subsequently clarified his position and I modified mine. We moved on. You should too.

…The cop with his gun drawn aresting you for not composting… One way not to get shot for living life as you want is to oppose legislation that would enslave you..
Akzed on February 11, 2010 at 12:46 PM

You are delusional and hysterical.

So why don’t you turn your weapon on the enemy and away from your comrades, champ?

That is literally my job. Which really helps me discern that which is worth getting ‘all worked up about’ and that which ain’t. You need to work on reality and fantasy, “champ”.

The level of contempt that the left wing has for Palin is insane! If she became President they would go berserk! I’d love it!

MCGIRV on February 11, 2010 at 4:19 PM

How about if all pundits and editorial writers agree to stop writing stupid crap the second we hear about it instead of doing a little more research?

Speedwagon82 on February 11, 2010 at 2:01 PM

Where Palin’s concerned? Never happen. Look at the sites who, after they were shown to have egg on their faces over this, left the original stories up.

ddrintn on February 11, 2010 at 4:45 PM

Okay so the “Black Bracelet” only for fallen soldier’s is a proven lie, can we now once again point out how “news week” cover photo of Palin placed “textover the “Blue Stare Flag” in her office?

DSchoen on February 11, 2010 at 6:19 PM

Anyone naming her son “Track” or “Trig” must be as stupid as they come… Palin is stupid, uneducated, vulgar and comes with a squeaky and annoying voice. I can’t stand her.
.
Not everyone claiming to be a conservative is competent to be president. I am ashamed of my fellow conservatives who do not seem to get this simple fact: A conservative stance is a required but not sufficient condition for political office.
.
Pat Buchanan for president!

I’m guessing your plastic doll hasn’t been putting out for you lately? Must be backed up.

RepubChica on February 11, 2010 at 7:29 PM

I tell you this. All of this CRAP that they have been dumping on gov. Palin from day one will some day come back and bite them so bad it will make Jaws seem like a walk in the park.I thought the treatment of Reagan and Bush were bad but this goes way beyond that. This is the worst i have ever seen. How she has held up under this daily assault is amazing and that in itself is one thing that drives them even more crazy.

I think she relishes it. She knows she has support. As for the treatment, “they” are bound and determined never ever ever to let anything approaching “Reagan” happen again. Many within the GOP as well.

ddrintn on February 11, 2010 at 10:19 PM

JC Silverberg sounds like a liberal moby trying to make Conservitives look bad.

Did you read his retraction/apology?

“Author’s Note: In my column in News yesterday, I criticized former Alaska governor Sarah Palin for wearing a black memorial bracelet with her son’s name on it, as Track returned unharmed from Iraq last fall.
I hope that this serves as an important lesson for anyone interested in the importance of these symbols.”

I wasn’t misled. It was a lie.

And what lesson did you learn, douchebag? I’ve learned that you’re a petty, self-important fool. And I didn’t even know who the hell you were until now. Now please shut the hell up so I can return to being blissfully ignorant of your existence.
