Quotes of the day
posted at 10:30 pm on February 9, 2010 by Allahpundit
“‘If the primaries were this year, I suspect she’d be nominated,’ a senior adviser to one of Sarah Palin’s potential rivals confides. It’s easy to see why: no one who’s thinking of running beats the enthusiasm she generates among Republican activists. But there is more to the case for Palin than just the confluence of her personality and a vacuum within the Republican Party: there is a method to her management of her public image. It strongly hints that she has pretty much decided to run for president in 2012, unless something knocks her out of the race; it is more organized and structured that it appears; and it is something that Republican insiders, in particular, will ignore at their peril…
“Palin, writes Jonathan Raban in an excellent essay in the New York Review of Books, has an ‘exceptionally canny political instinct for connecting with her own kind.’ It has been noted that her conservatism is resentment-based, and is fueled and nourished by the specter of elite mistreatment. (Palin is savvy enough to tease back.) But it is more than that. More than a list of grievances, Palin mixes Nixonian derision for those who think they know better with an aspirational dimension that motivates the middle class to vote. Out of the tony leagues of Washington and New York, she is — well, an Idahoan by birth, an exurbanite mother, able to expurgate the Republican Party of its own cosmopolitan tendencies. (This is one reason why the McCain campaign could not tend to her.) She is, as my friend @thetonylee says, ‘a hybrid of Nixon and Buchanan.’”
***
“Palin’s ease around a soundbite stands in stark contrast to the preferred rhetorical approach of President Obama who clearly believes that the soundbite culture has led to the dumbing-down of politics and, as a result, resists engaging in it…
“There is, of course, a limit to how far a soundbite strategy will get you. While Palin’s pithy one-liners win her applause from like-minded crowds and help influence the debate, she remains poorly regarded by major swaths of the population who believe she is not adequately equipped to serve as president. (In a Bloomberg poll conducted late last year, just 25 percent said Palin was qualified to be president while a whopping 67 percent said she was not.)
“Palin’s refusal to give any interviews to members of the media or offer any sort of detailed policy proposals of her own speak to a glaring weakness in her overall strategy.
“Soundbites — even when delivered with the skill Palin displays — are not, in the long run, a substitute for substance and won’t persuade those who have doubts about her that they misjudged her abilities.”

ohh please….if Obama is not throwing out pathetic straw man arguments….he is doing nothing but offering up sound bites….
….Grab a mop and help clean up…..I want the people who helped get us in this mess to just “shut up”…..Hope and Change is on the way…..reviewing my “profit and loss ratio’s report”…
…..Obama’s nothing more than a walking talking point.
It is no wonder Obama and his supporters spend all their time making silly, smart a$$ attacks on Palin….she nails him on a regular basis.
Even now liberals can’t argue policy with her so they are reduced to whining about a few words written on her hand while their liberal messiah has to have every word fed to him from a teleprompter.
Obama’s failed policies and lack of leadership have left his base with nothing to brag about….so all they have is to demonize their political rivals.
It is much easier for the White House to keep their sheep busy whining about Palin instead of having to answer for Mr. 57 states having daddy Bush show him the way:
Cheney’s Revenge
The Obama Administration is vindicating Bush antiterror policy.

Bush was right!!!!….and nobody is proving that more than Obama….

What are you adding to the discussion Geo? You don’t know anything about me. That’s a really silly post and reeks of projection. I’m a conservative. I don’t like Palin, and the blind worship of her by atheling and her ilk makes me want to puke. She’s the creation of a populist movement based on dogma and anger with no chance to succeed. She is unqualified for any office at all and is absolutely incapable of being elect to the office of POTUS.
dakine on February 10, 2010 at 1:23 AM
I could have guessed the first quote was from the Atlantic. Only such an organ of liberal propaganda could draw a comparison between Nixon and Palin. Just because she doesn’t like where the country is headed, doesn’t mean she has a chip on her shoulder or that her brand of politics is oriented in grudges and negative thinking. The leftists are the ones who deal in class warfare, not us. Palin begrudges no one anything, provided they are willing to work hard for it. She is an optimist about America and the opportunities that, when left unfettered by statist intervention, are there for anyone who wishes to avail themselves of them. In that respect, she is a lot more like Reagan than any of her other forebears. But of course, we can’t compare her to Reagan, because history has ultimately been kind to him and he is one of the most beloved presidents in American history. Much better to draw analogies with a power-hungry paranoid who had to resign and disgrace and who was never very much of a conservative anyway.
NoLeftTurn on February 10, 2010 at 1:24 AM
Very original. I bet you don’t even have a sense of embarrassment over such a lame rebuttal. Kind of childish really, don’t you think?
Geochelone on February 10, 2010 at 1:24 AM
.
You would never hear Obama using soundbites like; “hope and change”, or “we are the ones we are waiting for”, or “I think when you spread the wealth around it’s good for everybody.”, or “You will not see any of your taxes increase one single dime.”
Dasher on February 10, 2010 at 1:25 AM
C’mon Geo. She’s talking about people “not liking” somebody on a blog comment section. That’ really pretty silly schoolyard stuff.
dakine on February 10, 2010 at 1:27 AM
The definition of absolute stupidity: allowing yourself to interviewed by folks who hold you in disdain or utter contempt or seek to demonize or destroy you.
By avoiding MSNBC, CNN and the 3 networks Palin proves she is not stupid.

Funny you should ask. I would imagine some of the features would come in handy right about now. I am about half way through. I’m a telling you it opens up new insights into behavior patterns. It will shine the light of truth on the vermin.

Heehee, I thought it would! I had thought trying to do what you’re doing months ago because I noticed the pattern too, but I just don’t have the wherewithal to do it. It will be interesting.

plus…Palin’s not the one who tried to shut out a network because they would not carry their water for them like Obama’s White House did in trying to shut FOX news out.
Great political strategy there from the “smart ones”.
Even the other networks who are getting their pathetic butts handed to them on a regular basis by FOX could not stomach these blatant attempts by the White House to control the press and demanded that FOX be included.
Liberals have been calling for a boycott of FOX for years now and demanded that democrats not appear on the network.
But somehow Palin’s the one that is making the mistake by not granting interviews with pundits that cut and paste in an attempt to discredit her.
What pathetic hypocrisy.
Baxter Greene on February 10, 2010 at 1:42 AM
According to the geniuses at the LSM
they know everything about SP, they know what she thinks, how she thinks, what she is capable of, her IQ , her gynocological history, even stuff about her kids and grandkids, her past and her future.
So why do they want to sit down to talk with her ?
What is it that they think they’ll add to their complete and extensive knowledge they already have about her ?

Thank you, Chris Mattews, for defining the Obama presidency, to the utmost perfection. Mr. Tingles got one right, in the short time he came up for air.
Schadenfreude on February 10, 2010 at 2:01 AM
Tingles, you should re-read Palin’s convention speech and you will discover that most of what Palin predicted in that speech about Obama and his agenda have come true including the reading of Miranda rights to terrorists, warnings against excess spending and Obama not being gung-ho to win a war.
technopeasant on February 10, 2010 at 2:05 AM
LOL for real. Chris Matthews did not leave Barack Obama off that list near the clip’s end, oh yes he did!. Crack me up.

Don’t forget my favorite, that brilliant and ultra-nuanced campaign slogan: Yes we can.
Whew, thank goodness Obama wasn’t willing to dumb that down!
AZCoyote on February 10, 2010 at 3:06 AM
The more I hear and see the critics attempt to take on and take out Sarah, the more silly those guys seem to me.
If she wants to run in 2012 or later, I’ll happily support her. The Far Left will be unwitting agents in her eventual election, and I will smile with glee as their heads explode as she asks Mark Levin to be her Press Secretary.
That would be tremendous! ;-)

If these pseudo-intellectual jerks want substance, let them take an hour breather from their relentless nonsensical bloviating to get a daily course (from Glenn Beck) on how our last 100 years have been undermined by “the progressiveness” of many of our own presidents and politicians. Beck is reading as many books as he can to learn everything about what has happened and is still happening in this country. We are being slowly, but surely derailed from the principles of the conservative governing document our country was founded on (The Constitution.) Since Sarah Palin has enough chutzpah to allow herself be pummeled by these pundits and still remain a powerful opponent to these radicals, she’s tough enough to get my vote.

Squiggy on February 10, 2010 at 6:41 AM
Agree!
cmsinaz on February 10, 2010 at 6:45 AM
Your fear says otherwise.
With Obama in office for 3 more years, I believe my neighbor Earl who repairs lawnmowers would come off as more qualified than Obama.
FWIW, I don’t think she will run in 2012, I think she has something more dangerous in mind, I think she just wants to spread ideas. And as Stalin said…
“Ideas are more powerful than guns. We would not let our enemies have guns, why should we let them have ideas.”
RobertInLexington on February 10, 2010 at 6:52 AM
I don’t want to simply choose a candidate by comparing him/her to Obama, or whoever the other side offers. I want to support a candidate who has clearly articulated both the principles and the specific policies/positions informed by those principles. Sarah Palin has many supporters, but there are many of us who believe we can find someone better. If the choice were Palin or Obama, we would go for Palin, but we don’t want that to be the choice.
DrMagnolias on February 10, 2010 at 6:57 AM
Oh, your a conservative, but after seeing what she did to California….wait, sliding off into the ocean would be an improvement for that state considering what damage that RINO is doing to it…I mean Alaska, she turned the state around, took on her own party, put a hell of a dent in the good ol boys club and you think she isn’t qualified to hold any office at all?
Now, you may say she quit. So? She left the state in good hands. Now, maybe you don’t think having to fight wave after wave frivolous lawsuits that sucks up you and your staffs time, money, resources, state tax dollars etc is a big deal, but I am betting now that the liberals who thought they won by getting her to step down are wishing they had left the bitch alone so she would have been chained to her state.
But now she is free to go where ever she wants, to talk about what ever she wants.
She is a conservative that connects, and the one thing that pisses you and your ilk off the most is that she couldn’t give a rats ass what you think.
Again, I don’t think she will run in 2012, but I sure hope her tribe increases.

Ted, there is an utter lack of intellectual honesty today. I listened to Savage yesterday (who has become unlistenable) and he stated emphatically that the Tea Party Convention was a failure because “with all the publicity only 400 people showed up.” He said when he gives a speech thousands so up.
Now is that being a jealous stubborn fool or what? I guess he forgot to mention that it was on CSPAN and watched by millions and the keynote has been analyzed by practically everyone in the media.

Question: Why aren’t our “terribly concerned” Trolls showing up on Obama Threads to support The Mignificent One in his time of need? Answer: Even they can’t lie that well. Therefore they have to pitifully try to derail Palin Threads. She’s living free in all the Liberals’ heads, including the WH, MSNBC, and Gibbs.
kingsjester on February 10, 2010 at 8:20 AM

Johan Klaus on February 10, 2010 at 8:22 AM
It’s so interesting to see the pundit’s take. Everything they discuss about her, the example is even more profound with Obama.
He uses a teleprompter and manages to reveal he doesn’t know a simple military term and how its pronounced. She gets attention for the words on the hand. He hasn’t given a press conference since June, and the article suggests that she isn’t talking to the press.

Of course she is running for President in 2012! Read “Going Rogue”, this is exactly what she did in Alaska. She was welcomed by either party in Alaska either or by the news organizations, she’s been there, done that. So she went straight to the people. She traveled across Alaska talking to people. The media used to be a way to reach people, it isn’t anymore, so why use them?
As for policy, read here the other day a remark about Reagan, that when you actually have principle to guide you, you don’t really need policy. The policy is dictated by your principles, it allows a lot more flexibility and ability to respond to a crises. When you have no guiding principles, every problem looks like it is brand new, and you have to think of wonderful policies that are brand new to fix things. Huge spending and huge debts – apply conservative principles and the answers are easy. Reduce spending, don’t lend money to people who won’t pay it back, stop giving away stuff for free to people who never paid for it and never will, cut taxes because it raises overall revenues, get the hell out of the way of business.
Again to all the naysayers, read the book. She governed a state, and did a great job, 70% or more approval ratings, took on both corrupt Republicans and Democrats, took on Big Oil and won. Made policies that worked! Connected with real people. She’ll be there. She’s got lots of time.
odannyboy on February 10, 2010 at 8:37 AM
Give me a freaking break…. and Odumbo was qualified to be President? My daughter has more executive experience than Odumbo… she has managed a McDonalds. Sarah Palin has managed the largest state in the Union. Elitists obviously need to be brought back to reality, but nothing seems to be able to do it except a startling punch in the nose, literally or figuratively.
ultracon on February 10, 2010 at 8:52 AM
I thnk Palin is 100% more qualified to be President than the Harvard graduate, he is a good example of dumbing down our education system.
When he makes a mistake he doesn’t even know it, 57 states,”corpseman” THREE times and just stands there with his nose in the air saying to himself I am so great.
He’s Pathetic.

Only 1/3rd right.
It’s a populist movement allright, and there’s plenty of anger, but she’s NOT its creation. Palin is little more than an average individual who happened to be in the right place and time to catch a ride on the tsunami of the Tea Parties.
Not even pulling a “brave sir Robin” from her governorship dented her support; if anything, it made it stronger. If criticism were bullets, Palin would be as invulnerable as Superman. Nothing sticks. Nothing even slows her down.
And woe to the fools who naively think she can’t possibly win.

Being a Fox news analyst gives her a wider audience than her FB page and allows her to practice interviews and to articulate her ideas. She should have done interviews with friendly sources during her rollout, but then there should not be a hostile media, if our major networks are impartial and are delivering information vs. manipulating opinions.
Obama was treated respectfully when he went on BOR’s show. There is no reason someone on Obama’s shortlist for VP was writing questions for Katie Couric with the express intent of sowing discord between the two people on the GOP ticket.
