Criminals just wait until they know power will be off for two hours.

No relief in sight.

Yikes.

Do even the landline phones even work during the outages? The ones w/o onboard electronics have always worked in my city unless the actual phone line got severed.

That macaw? on his shoulder has got to be stuffed.

If it were the real deal it would have went and crapped all over Chavez`s shoulder.

Then executed for the crime of crapping all over Chavez`s shoulder.

Then stuffed.

Vicious circle/cycle.

My friend in Venezuela gives me the daily report of when his power will be out for two hours that day.

Criminals just wait until they know power will be off for two hours.

No relief in sight.

And Joe Kennedy takes cheap oil from this despicable thug and collects $600K a year in pay. Then he has his poor pawns trying to stay warm in Massachusetts thank the people of Venezuela. You know, the people who have no lights because a thug is robing them blind and buying politicians in America.

Ed why do you always link to these Chavez pieces? I mean i love the pic, and OOgo is always good for a laugh, but really I don’t get it.

Yeah, I know. A story of an election of a radical. Followed by nationalization of the basic industries. Followed by nationalization of the banking systems. Deficit spending causes massive inflation. Unemployment rises. Crime rises. Rationing is instituted. The radical shows up on the radio and television daily. Free speech and communication are outlawed. Fat cats are demonized. Investors are demonized. Detractors are demonized. Such is the story.

Now, on the other hand, in this country, where we just elected a radical...

Hmmm, I think we should all strongly support Obama running for the president of Venezuela! He could gracefully give up his job here and go down there and look like a winner.

“Suddenly Chavez” broadcasts whenever Chavez feels like talking, which is why Venezuelans have been instructed to listen for the harp music.

Hear a harp = turn off the radio!

Chavez treats his people like mushrooms--feed 'em BS, now keep them in the dark.

He'll probably go begging the Haitians to send him water for his hydro dams!

Time for Uribe of Colombia to propose some free trade--Colombian kilowatts for free oil.

Venezuelan crude is, I understand, some nasty stuff that requires a whole lot of refinery work to get in a useable state. I think there are two refineries in the US that can use it. In short, it ain't "all that" even as a net exporter of oil. If it never sent out another drop, we'd barely miss it (though Citgo might have some temporary problems). In that, we see just how petty, stupid, and ego-driven Chavez and the coupla thugs who support him are.

BTW, on a trip to Panama two years ago, I was informed by a local that there was a new insult in use: chavello, meaning a fat little prick. Chavellito makes it a little worse.

Polly wants a tetrabyte. Anyway God works in mysterious ways. Chavez steals the election and hobnobs with genocidal antisemites, and suddenly there's a drought.

Good post Ed. I've had Venezuela on the mind for a few days.

I have family that just came into town from Maracaibo (where the Venezuelan oil industry is concentrated) and things for the everyman on the street are much worse than what gets out via news reports. (keep in mind Venezuela had the highest standard of living of any country South of the border - so this collapse is that much more visceral)

There is water rationing across the country. The water comes on for about 3 hours a day if at all. Sometimes its off for 2 or 3 days straight.

There is a shortage of milk, cooking oil, eggs, beef, pork rice, and some vegetables and fruits. A barter economy is springing up for those enterprising enough to have a plot of land producing some food.

When they can find milk it is a powdered "milk" packaged in a plastic bag by the marxist government which dutifully puts pro Chavez Marxist statements on the outside. (although i wouldn't mind seeing Obama's face on the back of a milk carton here I don't think its the same thing)

the grocery stores that remain open had bare shelves before the forced currency devaluation last month which has now really sent the economy into a death spiral. the forced devaluation has been the kiss of death for the Venezuelan economy.

in an effort to "prevent inflation" after his forced currency devaluation, Chavez said he would seize any business that charged more for the goods it sold. It was all a pretext. Inflation has exploded and he has taken the opportunity to "nationalize" a number of international big box retailers such as "exito" stores and "carrefour" (both french owned by the way).

Chavez is seizing any business now that his thugs finger. He has closed the remaining radio and TV channels that don't spout his propaganda and he went after Twitter a few days ago.

Students are out on the streets daily.

the labor unions are now out in the streets protesting Chavez too. He nationalized many of them and now he's unable to pay employee salaries let alone deliver on the pie in the sky promises he made them. ( I love it when socialists get their comeuppance)(Obama)

Robbery and murder are off the charts especially in Caracas, like they never were before.

Caracas is now more dangerous than Baghdad and Chicago.

And Chavez has roving bands of thugs (think of them as the Venezuelan equivalent of the Iranian Basiij militia) "patrolling" the streets intimidating and harassing anyone they deem "counter-revolutionary" (which includes anyone voicing anti chavez sentiments or not complying with government edicts.)

so if you are a small business owner not only do you have to put up with ridiculous shortages of basic necessities but the economy is wrecked and your families physical security is endangered by unchecked crime and and unchecked government.

its an untenable situation.
things are bad.
