Without Murtha, Dems now one vote short of passing ObamaCare in House
posted at 8:29 pm on February 8, 2010 by Allahpundit
A nice catch by Philip Klein that completely eluded me earlier. With 218 votes needed to pass Reid’s bill, the number of Democrats who voted for the House’s ObamaCare bill last year now stands at … 217.
Back in November, the House passed its health care bill by a narrow 220 to 215 margin, with 39 Democrats voting against it. Since then, the one Republican who voted for it — Joseph Cao — has indicated that he would not support the bill a second time around given the weaker language on abortion in the Senate version. In addition, Florida Rep. Robert Wexler already retired prematurely. Factor in Murtha’s death today, and Pelosi is down to 217 votes — one short of passage. To pass the bill at some point in the next few months, she’ll need to flip a Democrat who is already on record voting against the bill. This doesn’t even take into account the pro-life Democrats led by Bart Stupak who are prepared to vote “no.” While there’s been talk that Pelosi had some votes in reserve the first time around, the point is that those members felt they needed to vote against the bill — and the political environment has deteriorated substantially for Democrats since then…
Another complicating factor is Rep. Neil Abercrombie. The Hawaii Democrat announced early last month that he would resign Feb. 28 run for governor. However, in his statement announcing his resignation, he said that he had ensured Pelosi that he’d be around to continue supporting the health care bill. Back when he made that statement, Scott Brown hadn’t won yet, and thus the end of this month seemed like plenty of time to finalize the health care bill. Now that the timeline has been pushed back, perhaps he’d postpone the effective date of his resignation if Pelosi still needed his vote.
Bizarrely, just three weeks after Scotty B shocked the world in Massachusetts, we’re now looking at a re-run of that race in PA-12. It’s a special election to fill out a nationally recognized legislator’s term, and the winner stands to cast the deciding vote on O-Care in his chamber. Expect the Republican nominee to run hard on that point, especially since his opponent is bound to run on the fact that, with the Dems in power, he can deliver more earmarks for Murtha’s district than a Republican could. Exit question: Is opposition to ObamaCare so intense in Johnstown that voters there might cut off their supply of pork because of it? I’m skeptical.

Whoever runs needs to remember that people in Johnstown love to be called ‘racists’ and ‘idiots’. That seem to be what motivates their votes. Murtha might not have been re-elected had he not smeared his own constitutents like that.
What a guy.

Email from William Russell:
RUSSELL ASKS FOR PRAYERS FOR MURTHA FAMILY
Announces a Moratorium on Campaign Media Efforts
(JOHNSTOWN, PA) – Responding to the sudden and unfortunate announcement of the death of Rep. John Murtha (D-PA-12th), GOP challenger William Russell has asked all citizens, Republicans, Democrats and Independents to come together and pray for Joyce and the Murtha family as they deal with the tragic loss of husband, father and grandfather. “While Mr. Murtha and I were political combatants in every sense, our family and campaign team asks you to keep the Murtha family in your thoughts and prayers,” said Russell. “Regardless of your political position, you always knew Jack had an immense love and loyalty to his family and the residents of the 12th Congressional District.
The Russell campaign is immediately initiating a moratorium on all political media activity for the next five days in respect of the passing of John Murtha. The campaign will also remove all political references to Mr. Murtha on the Russellbrigade.com website immediately.
It is the wish of the William Russell for Congress Committee, that the passing of Mr. Murtha be treated with the utmost respect and decency by all, especially in the media and weblogs.

Not to rain on the parade, but I actually don’t think this is right. Cao flips which takes it to 219-216, then take out the two missing votes and you get to 217-216. Passage. (My understanding is that under House rules passage is if Yeas exceed the Nays, if a quorum is present. So theoretically 200-199 is passage if 36 don’t vote.)

William Russell ran an honorable campaign against this porkmeister in 2008. He was up in the polls until KOS, soros and a bunch of others flooded this district with cash and seiu and acorn was out there in full force, in just that very last week. It was disappointing that his small lead vanished into about a 14 point deficit in the election. Murtha was well connected to that progressive machine and they turned out for him. I don’t see that happening for someone else.
With Murtha not on the ballot for a special election, this kind of support will probably be somewhat lacking, as the dems are being peppered on all fronts this time. Russell has been in constanct campaign mode since the day after the last election.
He has the troops in place, the infrastructure in place and the support on the ground in place now to be a front runner in this special election. He is very worthy of support from all here because he is a true patriot and constitutionalist, a real conservative. We need more like him in congress.
I am just shocked that Murtha died so unexpectedly. Was this at Walter Reid? I hope no doctor loses a rank for a surgery error but the irony of that has to be noticed. I know it is in very poor taste to mention it, but it is like the proverbial elephant in the room no one wants to mention but everyone notices.
The karma is smacking the dems on the ass so intensely right now. You have to wonder.
karenhasfreedom on February 8, 2010 at 9:32 PM
Now I remember. Mel crashed and Jean jumped in. Then, there was the special election and Talent took it. With George W. campaigning for him.

Yeah, and now daughter Robin is running against Roy Blount for Bond’s soon-to-be vacated seat. Two Missouri dynasties, neither one worth sheet. Oh how I wish there would be two challengers (one to each)in the primaries…but that doesn’t look likely. I’m with Sarah: the primaries are where things need to be duked out.
BTW: the good news is that brother Russ (Congressman) is about to get his hiney handed to him…He’s the rep. from the district where the black gentleman was beaten up at the townhall meeting by SIEU members last summer.
Chewy the Lab on February 8, 2010 at 10:00 PM
Murtha’s death is a loss to Pelosi in another way. He was one of her henchman, along with George Miller. Murtha originally helped round up the votes so Pelosi could head up the Dem caucus, and eventually become Speaker. Steny Hoyer hasn’t forgotten that she beat him out for this office.
Murtha was also useful at getting votes for Pelosi since Murth sat on imporatant committee and could help Dems get their earmarks through….if they voted the right way.
Hoyer, by the way, has been reported as “reaching out” to the Blue Dogs and being understanding at how difficult it is to have to vote on the stuff Pelosi puts up…
If Pelosi loses the House, Hoyer may foment a coup in the caucus.
