Obama becoming the National Nanny
posted at 1:36 pm on February 8, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
The funk into which Barack Obama has fallen can be chalked up to a host of reasons — the failure to engage on his own legislative agenda, the failure of ObamaCare, lack of attention to the crisis in employment for almost a year, and so on. Some Democrats think that the problem goes beyond the agenda and extends to Obama’s conception of a President. After having borne themselves the brunt of scoldings from Obama in his State of the Union speech, Politico reports that some in his party wonder why Obama insists on casting himself as the national nanny:
For a president who ran on uplifting themes like change and hope, Barack Obama spends an awful lot of time scolding Americans about how he hopes they’ll change.
He has advised parents to “replace that video game with a book and make sure that homework gets done.” He has urged members of Congress not to read blogs or watch 24-hour cable news. And he’s challenged lobbyists, lawmakers, bankers, journalists, insurance companies and other heads of state to do a better job.
He’s prodded people to get off the couch, eat healthier and exercise more. He’s even suggested Americans buy stocks, U.S.-made cars and energy-efficient light bulbs, while cautioning them not to max out their credit cards.
At times, having Obama in the Oval Office is like having a really powerful Dr. Phil around.
Well, Dr. Phil never whines about how much work Dr. Laura left him when he gained pre-eminence, so I’m not sure that analogy works.
Carol Lee quotes former Clinton aides DeeDee Myers and Paul Begala as saying some of this might be necessary, but too much becomes damaging, which is absolutely true. No one respects a manager who constantly crabs about everyone around him but doesn’t roll up his or her own sleeves to participate in the work. That’s exactly what Obama has done for the past year in pushing Congress to act without bothering to present his own specific ideas to contribute to the effort.
However, part of this comes straight from the agenda itself. After all, if Democrats want to build a nanny state, someone has to be Nanny in Chief, and Obama assumes that will be him. GOP strategist John Feehery says that no one likes a scold, but what has become crystal clear is that the Democratic agenda will put government in that position — with tremendous power to punish what it sees as bad behavior. The founders worried that a strong central government would accrue too much power to infringe on personal choice rather than sticking to truly national issues, which is why they wrote the Constitution to sharply curtail its ability to do just that.
Obama’s problem isn’t just that he acts like a nanny; it’s that his rhetoric makes clear the direction he wants to take the US, if the agenda didn’t already make that clear enough as it is.
Update: I think a little Mary Katharine Ham would be just perfect for this post (thanks to HA commenter Forest for the suggestion):
She came to the same conclusion almost two years ago.

He’d much prefer the role of dictator. But because of our annoying system of checks and balances, he has to settle for “nanny.” It’s a chafing compromise, and one he’s no doubt working at fixing.

Just now they’re noticing? I was sick of his lecturing and scolding half way through the primaries, and I predicted (somewhere, I swear!) that this would be his undoing even more than his “progressive agenda.”
The one thing Americans can’t bear, whether liberal or conservative or other, is a thin-skinned humorless scold. And Obama fits that description, to a “T.”

Individualism is the greatest war avoidance system ever devised, something WWII taught us in harsh abundance.
The state-ism direction we’re being forced towards has other consequences than just enslavement its the prelude to totalitarian governments playing bumper cars, with their citizens taking the hits.
Hitlers National Socialist Party, Mussolini’s fascist corporatism, Stalin’s communist death monster and Imperial Japan’s avarice. They all stemmed from statism the expansion of central government’s tentacles of control into every tiny part of their citizens lives.
We don’t need to repeat history.

Nancy Reagan was roundly mocked for her “Just Say No” campaign. It was utterly pointless, and it most certainly did not earn her any respect.
Let’s go over a basic point:
Just because a Republican has done something foolish does not, in any way, minimize its foolishness when a Democrat does it.
Please see my earlier post on the Tu Quoque Fallacy.

You’re going to flip that I largely agree with you on the details–like buying American. BUT the biggest problem, the overriding one, is the presentation. On top of that is how Democrats are handling their own responsibilities, making their prez and themselves a bunch of hypocrites.
If the Dem Party had its own act together, and not been doing the opposite of what they preach to the rest of us, they might be more credible.
And, no–I have no great love for the GOP, either.

I don’t know, but considering how often Dubya was attacked for so much as looking at a golf course, the comment seems apt. PBHO has played more rounds of golf in his first year of office than GW did in eight years, meanwhile the rest of us are putting in serious hours just to feed our families.
I don’t appreciate having a President who tells me that I’m doing it wrong while he chooses which golf course to empty of other golfers so that he can play a round of 18.

Mr. D on February 8, 2010 at 2:00 PM
If the govt hadn’t been starting to take on the role as Americans’ caregiver, none of this ‘scolding’ would be necessary.
Obama is scolding us on one hand to do things for ourselves & step up to the plate, &on the other, he is trying to wrest as much power about our individual decision -making from us as possible through govt intervention in our lives.
So BO, which is it?
Will you enforce that Constitution you are such an expert in & leave us alone to succeed or fail, or will you keep busting into our lives to take away our self-sufficiency?

He isn’t elected to be Chief Advisor or Head Nanny… I don’t care if his freaking advice is wonderful and splendorific: I didn’t ask for it, I don’t want it, and anyone suggesting what I can do with my life can go to hell.
If I want a Nanny I will hire one. Ditto on an advice giver.
The bozo is elected as the Head of the Executive Office which includes: Chief of State, Leader of the Armies and the Navies, Head of Government, and Pardoner of Last Resort. He is not doing those jobs well and a couple of them at all.
That is the problem with the Nannystate: it wants to get involved in areas it doesn’t belong and ignore the areas handed to it as actual work to do.
ajacksonian on February 8, 2010 at 2:02 PM
Dave has a point here. There\’s nothing wrong with the President making these kinds of suggestions and even demanding some kind of movement in Congress. He has every right, and frankly an obligation, to do it as the leader of his party.I think the point here is it hasn\’t stopped there. Remember the Beer Summit? He jumped into the middle of what should\’ve been a minor misunderstanding in a small town and then turned it into National news because he thought he could fix it. This Healthcare bill is following along the same lines. He thinks the Feds are better suited to determine what, if any, healthcare I need for myself and my family. He and his brethren sincerely believe in a strong central government and the States just falling into line. That ain\’t gonna happen in this country and the sooner he figures that out the better off he will be. Right now I\’m embarrassed for him on a personal level because he MUST be wondering what is going on. All his rhetoric isn\’t getting the job done. His party\’s leadership in the House and Senate is incompetent. His agenda lies in a shambles while the economy continues to struggle.I don\’t want to see any President be seen as a failure in the eyes of History. I\’m not a Bill Clinton fan but there were some good things to come out of his Presidency. I want something good to come out of President Obama\’s time in office as well…but right now it ain\’t looking too good.

Traditionally, First Ladies take up a cause, and drugs happened to be Mrs. Reagan’s. To some degree, it it worked!
Other First Ladies have taken up causes like women’s suffrage or feeding the hungry. With everyone supinely doing whatever he thinks is best, for him
Well… just an ordinary socialistic fascist man…
BUT!
Let some protesters be allowed to speak out against his grand controlling schemes and his serenity is through,
They’ll protest his grand plans, from the cellar to the dome,
And then go on to the enthralling fun of piece by piece eviscerating him…

How long until 72 degrees ‘should be’ 68? We’ll be better there, it’s more common sense! SUVs? Pass a law making their production and ownership outright illegal.
So on, and so on.
The political Left really has no base on which to stand of its own. It can only mock and ask questions to gain some kind of equivalence and, thus, legitimacy.

Oh I know it has nothing to do with him succeeding. I hope his agenda fails but he DESPERATELY needs to improve how he looks around the world and at least make an attempt to look Presidential. That’s what I’m getting at. The world respected President Bush. They hated him but they respected him and the office of President. President Obama is already irrelevant on the world stage and that hurts the country just as Carter’s impotence hurt us.
Dave and I make a good pair? heheh…you obviously don’t know me that well.

Hey Drywall, if ya need heart surgery, come on down!

No. Many of us did not applaud.
But nice projection.

I still think that Obama is an empty suited sock puppet trying to act out the role he’s been given by his handlers.

For us northerners (here in ND), 65 degrees for a house temp isn’t any big deal.
When it’s in the 30s we can wear shorts & short sleeves outside after living in the negatives of winter.
But 65 to Texans, Floridinas, Arizonans, etc is like a death sentence.
Poor buggars would die like flies!

Dave Rywall .
Man crushin on Obama are ya?
If you like living in a nanny state, that’s great. I’m happy for you. We here, want no part of it. We like our freedoms, and ability to succeed, or fail on our own merits. We dont’ need a big government to tell us how, when, what, and where to do anything.
Again…if you’re happy with that way of life…great. But you come here, and act as if your opinion means something, and it doesn’t. Perhaps you’d fit in better at Huffpo, or DK?

No, idiot. You’re supposed to be an adult and have common sense. But it appears you don’t.
Dave Rywall on February 8, 2010 at 2:15 PM
Arrrgggh Avid Drywall is back with more reasoned discourse from Canardia.

And Bush was roundly mocked for that, too.
There’s probably someone in Moose Jaw picking his nose right now. You’d better get on that, Dave.
