New Marist poll shows Obama losing independents 2-1

posted at 12:55 pm on February 8, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

So much for a post-SOTU bounce.  A new Marist poll of registered voters nationwide puts Barack Obama’s approval at just 44%, the same as the Rasmussen tracking poll this weekend.  The numbers among independents will really rattle the White House (via Geoff A):

Fewer registered voters nationwide — 44% — currently approve of President Barack Obama’s job performance than disapprove — 47%. When Marist last asked about the president’s approval rating in December, 46% thought well of Obama’s job performance while 44% gave him low marks.

Perhaps, particularly concerning for Mr. Obama is the drop in support among Independents. For the first time since taking office, a majority of Independents — 57% — disapproves of how he is doing in the role. 29% approve, and 14% are unsure. …

“If attracting Independents and bipartisanship are the aim, then the president clearly has a lot of ground to cover in year two,” says Dr. Lee M. Miringoff, Director of The Marist Institute for Public Opinion.

The news gets worse from there.  The number of Democrats who believe that Obama is changing the country for the better remains relatively high, but dropped from 76% just two months ago to 69% now.  But among independents, that number has flipped.  Two months ago, they split at 36%, but now almost a majority (45%) believe he’s changing the country for the worse, while only 26% believe the opposite.

Obama can’t rely on personal favorability for much longer, either.  Consistently across all pollsters, Obama generally has solid majorities of people that personally like him.  Not any longer; among all Marist respondents, that number is down to 50%, losing five points since December.  A majority of independents (52%) hold an unfavorable view of Obama personally, up nine points in two months.

The upcoming midterms will definitely be a problem for Obama and the Democrats.  Already, a majority of respondents see the elections as a referendum either on Obama himself or Democratic leadership in Congress (54% combined), while only 18% want to send a message to the GOP.  That impulse is as strong with independents (61%) as it is with Republicans (62%), and almost as strong among Democrats (48%).

This spells disaster in the midterms for Democrats.  Of late, their efforts have gone into casting Republicans as the villains that kept the Democratic agenda from being seen as properly benign, but that campaign has been ongoing for the last two months and has had no lifting effect.  They had better reconsider that agenda instead.

Blowback

Maybe this might have to do with Obama’s crash and burn:

AP analysis: US economic stress hit a peak in Dec.

“Nevada was again the most economically distressed state in December, with a Stress score of 21.08. It was followed by Michigan (17.43), California (16.25), Florida (15.78) and Illinois (14.12).

North Dakota (4.99) was again the least-stressed state in December. Next were South Dakota (5.47), Nebraska (5.63), Vermont (7.14) and Montana (7.71).

To the voters of NV, CA, FL, IL and MI….you voted for this, now suffer. On the other hand, 4/5 least stressed states are solid conservative Republican states.

Coincidence?

Obama inherited the worst situation any president EVER had to take.
I give him credit for the country not being in EVEN worse shape.

I bought a new cappuncino maker that was so cheap that I only have to make 20 good lattes to make it pay off.

There are solutions. :)

If the liberal agenda passes in full, you wouldn’t be allowed to own such a thing. Well, maybe allowed, but unable to afford it without saving spare change for a long time.

Liam on February 8, 2010 at 1:44 PM

Big deal, that’s nothing compared to other items.

I went to Snob Coffee Shop the other day and my favorite latte (double large truffle chocolate with fluff cream and just a hint of Madagascar cinnamon) had gone up 85 cents. 85 cents! I darned near dropped my copy of “Dreams Of My Father” on the floor in shock.

I know, right?

And the free-trade Guatemalan is getting so expensive I might have switch to buying the kind where that Juan guy oppresses donkeys to pack it off the mountain.

Hey – Maybe if I get a UN grant to buy him an Audi to use, he will let the donkeys go free as nature intended.

She could write “God Bless America” on her palm and the whole ‘controversy’ would end right there. The libs would never allow it airtime.

“Handwipe’ is about how it’ll be under the Democrat ‘dream’ for America, where the store runs out of TP before everyone who waited in line for hours could get their government-provided and -allowed allotment.

All the more reason for the GOP to refuse to attend Bambi’s upcoming bitch session.

DanaSmiles on February 8, 2010 at 2:08 PM

A lot of moderate swing voters are still hoping Obama succeeds, because they’re still holding out hope Obama will have some sort of epiphany and will change his policy plans to conform to their beliefs. They don’t want to admit yet to themselves they threw away their vote in 2008, so his personal approval rating stays relatively high. But post-SOTU, those same people are starting to notice that Obama not only has no plans as of now to change course, but is basically blaming the American people for not understanding all the marvelous things his plans would do.

Obama’s skirted his past bouts with elitist condescension because so many moderates were so in love with the idea of a successful African-American president. But if Barack & staff decide that a “screw you, you morons” policy is what they’re going to follow, in hopes of getting as much passed before the midterms as possible, then you’re going to see his personal approval ratings crater and the damage for the Democrats in November is going to be even worse than they fear today.

jon1979 on February 8, 2010 at 2:10 PM

I still do not understand why OBama has poll #s in any poll that exceed a single digit.
Those who approve of him HAVE to be sucking on the govt teat in SOME way.
How else could anyone approve of his ‘efforts’?!
I am seriously astounded by the stupidity of people.
These are lean times.
So the govt needs to cut a lot of people loose.
But that doesn’t buy votes, so both parties will continue trying to ‘bring home the bacon’ for their states, all the while being voted in by the parasites that get their goodies.
America will only realize its loss when everyone, or enough govt parasites, have lost their liberty.
Freedom is too scary as I’ve said before, for a lot of people bcs it means that you are free to fail & you will only have yourself to blame if you do.
It is much easier to blame someone else when your life goes to hell.

Hopefully, Mitch McConnell and the other GOP leaders will hold firm, and not buckle to any kind of perceived pressure to “reach across the aisle” to enact some version of the Health Care Reform legislation bills that have already passed in the Democratic controlled House and the Senate. Any remodeled form of those two bills will meet with disaster, both for the country as a whole, and for the GOP whose underlying foundation is supposed to be for less big government involvement in our daily lives.

Be prepared, all, to continue and step up the letter and e-mail writing, and phone calls, to let the Congressional GOP members know that any compromise on the Dems’ bills is no compromise at all. The Dems are looking to get their toe in the door on something they can build on later, as is their historical strategery. More than that, though, the Dems are now looking to get the monkey off their own backs, and what better way than to con the GOP members into signing on to some bastardized version of their bills, so that they can later publicly point the finger at the Republicans and say it’s their fault for causing an unworkable and costly final bill to be enacted.

Ah yes, again another poll comes out and Ed Morrissey dishonestly ignores the fact that many right-leaning folks are (at least nominally) leaving the GOP and calling themselves “independents” (i.e., Tea Partiers).

So this doesn’t mean his ratings are so bad with centrists. It’s means more Republicans are calling themselves Independent, but they still dislike Obama. It’s not a surprise.

orange on February 8, 2010 at 6:49 PM
