Murtha dead at 77

posted at 3:18 pm on February 8, 2010 by Allahpundit

There was no shortage of things to criticize — search our archives for “pork,” “Abscam,” “ethics,” or “Haditha,” for starters — but there’s also no need to kick the coffin while friends and family are grieving. Let’s accentuate the positive. From WaPo’s obituary, semper fi:

He entered the Marine Corps in 1952, during the Korean War period, and served until 1955. He returned to Johnstown to run the family car wash and finish his undergraduate degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1962, and he joined the Marine Corps Reserve. During the Vietnam conflict, he volunteered for combat and served near Da Nang in 1966 and 1967.

In 1955, he married Joyce Bell. She survives, along with their daughter, Donna Murtha ; twin sons, Pat Murtha and John M. Murtha ; and three grandchildren…

Rep. Murtha, whose military decorations included the Bronze Star and two awards of the Purple Heart, was one of the first Vietnam veterans to sit in the House. His district returned him regularly to office, and after 10 years, Rep. Murtha had quietly established himself as a key Capitol Hill player who could woo lawmakers of divergent views to join forces.

I remember seeing a few days ago that he was in the hospital for surgery but assumed he was out of the woods because he was in stable condition. Not so — for good reason:

The 77-year-old Democrat underwent scheduled laparoscopic surgery to remove his gallbladder at Bethesda Naval Hospital last Thursday but then, after his release, sought care at the Virginia Hospital Center over the weekend.

The congressman’s spokesman declined to say Tuesday what led him to be hospitalized again. But responding to questions Wednesday, he said that Murtha was in stable condition. Two persons said it appeared Murtha’s intestine had been cut inadvertently during the gall bladder removal.

The two obvious political questions: Who’ll succeed him as the new powerbroker on defense spending in the House? And what will this do to the race in PA-12, a district that’s ever so slightly Republican-leaning according to the Cook Report? Like Ace says, that election may have less to do with the deficit and ObamaCare than who can promise the most earmarks to a community that’s been gorging on them for years.

Update: More on the Murtha family’s history of military service from the AP, which doesn’t flinch at his many ethics imbroglios:

Military service was in Murtha’s blood. He said his great-grandfather served in the Civil War, his father and three uncles in World War II, and his brothers in the Marine Corps.

He left Washington and Jefferson College in 1952 to join the Marines, where he rose through the ranks to become a drill instructor at Parris Island, S.C., and later served in the 2nd Marine Division.

Murtha moved back to Johnstown and remained with the Marine Reserves until he volunteered to go to Vietnam. He served as an intelligence officer there from 1966 to 1967 and received a Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts.

Update: A special election will be called within 60 days to fill Murtha’s seat for the rest of the year. The winner, obviously, will enjoy an incumbency advantage in November. It’s a jump ball:

With Murtha gone, however, the special election will be seriously contested. Murtha’s district is the only one in the country won by Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) in 2004 and by Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) in 2008, according to Republican sources, and that trend line coupled with the volatile national environment for Democrats ensures Republicans will heavily target the contest.

So you have to die to suddenly be forgiven? He doesn’t deserve it. Death does not make him less corrupt, less wrong, less horrible a politician. It is sad he died the way he did, subject to the errors of government provided healthcare, but in a way it does drip of irony.

Here’s the question. If they killed him, can his family sue the government? Can anyone? Which is one reason why the universal healthcare he wanted to foist upon us was a bad idea.

Notice when he was crashing he didn’t go back to a government run facility, but to a private one. A choice he would have taken from you.

Sorry, no sympathy. None for his family who spent that bad money for years without guilt and gained a comfortable living and life from it.

Here is one example;

Good he’s gone, maybe an opportunity to put a non-corrupt person in.

Having read almost all the comments I will give my thoughts. I met John Murtha here in Mn when he was stumping for Collen Rowley( the FBI employee who falsely made herself more than she was). He and she falsely stated that the use of our VFW hall would be for veteran’s issues yet was used for fund raising. I was aware of his accusations of the Haditha Marines. When he came around to we veterans, he came to me, a combat Marine of Vietnam, and said we were brothers. I said, ” No sir.. the day you took bribes , and called Marines murderers, you became an ex-Marine”. I say this for transparency. Do I think his service to Pennsylvania was honorable?… NO! Do I think his service to the Corps was honorable?… Yes, while he served. I ramble on this way because now that he has passed on.,he , alone, must answer to Marines in heaven for his actions, he alone must answer to his God, for his corruptness. It is not for me to judge. I wish his family peace and solace at their loss. Oh, and Semper Fi to the honor of Marines he so dirtied and would not apologize to when found in error of his comments. A great summary of my opinion.

I am as distraught over this as I was at Ted Kennedy’s death. That’s all I’m saying.

ErinF on February 8, 2010 at 9:19 PM

I feel for the family.
As I am not family I’m not too grieved. The guy was a bad dude. And just because he was in the military does nothing to say or prove otherwise.
Some people may start off noble…but then somewhere in their rout..go terribly wrong.
As was he. Wrong and just a bad seed.
I DO hope that he, in his last moments made whatever amends needed to be made.

Since Murtha is no longer around to issue the apology, the DNC should at least deliver an apology to the falsely accused Marines.

RIP Murtha. While I can’t say I respect your efforts during the years of political service, you do earn a modicum of respect here for serving your country in the military.

How unfortunate you’ve redeployed over the horizon and are now out of reach of any prosecutorial efforts.

USMC at Haditha

http://michellemalkin.com/2006/05/18/john-murtha-hangs-the-marines/

Congressman John Murtha has now gone so far as to accuse American Marines of cold-blooded murder… the United States House of Representatives should at the very least censure Congressman Murtha, who has gone so far out of his way to initiate such inflammatory and potentially dangerous rhetoric. He has dishonored his seat, the military criminal justice system, the Marine Corps and the United States of America. — Bob Owens at Confederate Yankee

garydt on February 8, 2010 at 9:54 PM

I had no respect for Rep. Murtha at all when he was alive. I would have been ecstatic to see him out of office — by any other means than death. I believe he is now before God in judgment, and which of us can stand before God and be justified by our own actions? Not one of us, no matter how “good” we try to be. May God have mercy on his soul, forgive all his sins, and send comfort to his family.

Mary in LA on February 8, 2010 at 8:15 PM

Be that as it may, I still find Acts’ description as the teachable moment vis a vis Jack.

We may not judge one’s soul, but we sure can judge his fruits and accordingly his life. So call a spade a spade.

May God rest will judge his soul as we all will be judged. And we’ll judge his life for the impact he had on his “subjects” — not good.

For all he cared, the Marines could have been convicted and rotted in jail, so long as Jack could score political points with the nutroots. He sold his fidelity to gain the world and barring a bedside conversion, lost his soul. Teachable moment indeed.

He was an abusive, corrupt, and opportunist political figure. I’ll always remember him as the Congressman who used his incredible political power to smear the lives and reputations of lowly and powerless, yet good Marines.

HondaV65 on February 8, 2010 at 9:11 PM

Of course, this is the objective truth. But I was flamed earlier this afternoon on this very thread by some self-righteous trolls for saying things that were not even this harsh.

Funny how, when Michael Jackson died, more than half the commenters on the HotAir blog were quick to pi$$ on his grave. But Murtha, who arguably hurt more people than Jacko, seems to get a pass because in his younger days he was in the armed services.

Service to the country is admirable. But in my mind. the crimes and corruption that marked his political career later in life overshadow his acts of bravery as a soldier. He abused the trust that was placed in him, and smeared good Americans for political gain.

It is sad he died the way he did, subject to the errors of government provided healthcare, but in a way it does drip of irony.

That’s an unfair shot to take at the VA which does an amazing job caring for this country’s veterans on a very limited budget. My brother proudly served as a VA physician for many years and took pride in providing healthcare to this country’s veterans. Many VA docs turn down more lucrative offers in the private sector during their VA careers.

It’s also unfortunate that you’re blind to the quality of care that the VA offers:

You know, Ed and Kevin, today on TEMS, mentioned that they don’t like to speak ill of the dead. Personally, after having read Orson Scott Card’s “Ender” books, I ascribe more to the Speaker for the Dead line of thought. Tell the truth about a person and tell the truth about how you felt about them. Don’t tell just the good because that doesn’t paint the whole picture of the person AS THEY WERE.

Personally, much like my feelings about the late Sen. Ted Kennedy, I say good ridance. For far too long, both made a mockery of what was good and right about this country, and we’re better off for their not being here.

A crude and crass opinion of those not here to defend themselves? Perhaps. The unvarnished truth of how I feel about both of them? You betcha.

Fins, as much as I detest your politics, I would not wish death upon you. If you go back to my first post in this matter, the condolences to his family and the wish that he rest in peace (or, to put it into correct theological terms, be accepted into Heaven by the Lord) is not hypocritical. What happened to Murtha could happen to any of us; I’ve personally witnessed malpractice. Even as I remember him as opposed to many of my political viewpoints, I can remember that he was the loving father of a son in the service of our nation, and a good husband to his wife. He was also pro-life — or at least mostly pro-life.

Again, my condolences to his family, and my wish that he is with our Lord.

That said, I do not think that the bolded word above means what you think it means.

Mr. Murtha had better hope the whole “God” thing is indeed a bunch of lies. Lying, cheating, corruption, crap all over our soldiers in order to gain personal status with Ms. Pelosi; got some explaining to do in the meeting with the big guy.

Keemo on February 9, 2010 at 8:27 AM

I talked to a friend in PA last night and not only had she not heard that Murtha died…she and her husband had no idea who he was!! You’d think that no matter where you lived you had at least heard of him. I was shocked until I remembered that these two people are the same ones who told me that there was absolutely NO difference in Obama and McCain and gave me the impression they might vote for Obama and for all I know they probably did. :roll:

DanaSmiles on February 9, 2010 at 8:39 AM

Knowing that I too will die someday, I only hope that people do not bash me with the hatred that I probably deserve. That being said, I will say “thank you” Mr. Murtha for your service to this county. Your military record is worthy of praise, if only for it’s testament to the sacrifice you were willing to pay to this country.

I’m not sure what changed your thinking when you became a politician because you obviously became tainted with the power that becomes those in power.

I will pray for your family and friends at their loss of a loved one, but even more so, I will pray that a man or woman will replace you who holds more closely the ideals of us “common” people here.

Rest In Peace

Perspective adds a lot to an exchange. Had I known this, I would have taken a entirely different tack. If I had two kids in the service, I don’t know that I could stay silent. But, I didn’t comment on a fogw post. He commented on mine. I have reasons for silence that a little perspective on my background might explain.

nico on February 8, 2010 at 5:40 PM

I’m sorry, but you’re misrepresenting the facts. I don’t make it a habit to go off on someone for no reason at all. Fact is, I had made a comment regarding what this poster had said, not you.

Praying for the Murtha family. Politics stops at the grave.

pugwriter on February 8, 2010 at 4:04 PM

Then you copied and pasted my comment, which wasn’t addressed towards you or anything you had previsously said, and made your own comment.

It also stops at the waters edge when we are a country at war.

Murtha lost sight of that. He turned on his country and his fellow soldiers, and now I have to listen to comments here about how we owe him respect. Murtha’s politics were a dagger right through the heart of our troops. He used it as a weapon to further his party and his own career.

Please.

fogw on February 8, 2010 at 4:13 PM

An absense of condemnation at this moment is not a show of respect for his politics.

nico on February 8, 2010 at 4:17 PM

Now I ask you, how is that you not commenting on my post and me commenting on yours? It appears to me that you added your two cents, implying that I should have remained silent about Murtha’s indescretions as a politician. You took the trouble to paste my comments, so there is no question that you were directly addressing what I had said (to another poster). It cannot be interpreted any other way. And, there was no mention of how one Marine felt about another Marine, in this, your initial comment to me.

Then, after I had responded to your comment ……

That’s rich. Referring to “absence of condemnation” on a thread about Murtha. Tell that to the Marines at Haditha, who suffered the rath of Murtha’s false accusations while they were spilling blood for their country.

You might feel differently if one of your son’s was in the line of fire.

Yeah, my feelings are hurt. So, a marine cannot refrain from condemnibng another on the day of his death? Is that what you mean by “That’s rich.”?

nico on February 8, 2010 at 4:48 PM

This was the first time you brought up that argument.

I’m surprised that Michelle O’Bambi hasn’t made note of his protruding stomach fat and how that may have contributed to his death. After all, had he been lean and slim, the surgeon might have found it easier to navigate inside his body, thereby avoiding slicing him up inappropriately.

I didn’t agree with his politics but my prayers are with him and his family.

Well said

I won’t miss him.

We can talk about his good side, but most everyone has a good side, and the rest are psychotics.

He did a lot of hurt while he was here. He raided the government treasury, and that is money coming out of the pockets of folk who can’t afford a new coat, or a car repair. He stole this money with pride and it was called smart politics. He was shameless and out of control, and his ability to get the goods got him re elected, because greed begets greed and evil begets evil.

Corruption disguised as public service and he mixed the two so well he finally lost track of truth itself

What did Pelosi call him, a giant? She would know

entagor on February 9, 2010 at 12:09 PM

So many times I hear people say “honor his service to our country” or something similar about a political enemy.

How come it is never seen as a dirtbag who took a short detour on his path of life to fake giving service to our country. Senator Horseface comes to mind. Nobody who is sane would claim he was a patriot simply because he was in uniform and was in Vietnam. Why is it any different with this guy?

Good character is not something that can be taken from a person but it is something that can be thrown away. If Murtha ever had it, he threw it away for the ability to worship self. His problem now is there are no mirrors where he is and nobody to tell him lies about his value.

He is left with only the truth he tried to hide for so long.

My internal cynic says that nobody on either side of the aisle would care about kicking coffins if it didn’t look bad to the center.

After all, the center doesn’t like “mean people.” And it’s “mean” to say bad things about someone that died. They’re kind of like the smoking hot girlfriend everyone wants to keep … but it’s hard because they’re dumber than a bag of hammers and they get upset every time someone wants to do something out of the ordinary.

From the Halls of Montezuma,
To the shores of Tripoli;
We fight our country’s battles
In the air, on land, and sea;
First to fight for right and freedom
And to keep our honor clean;

We are proud to claim the title
Of United States Marine.

Our flag’s unfurled to every breeze
From dawn to setting sun;
We have fought in every clime and place
Where we could take a gun;
In the snow of far-off Northern lands
And in sunny tropic scenes;
You will find us always on the job
The United States Marines.

Here’s health to you and to our Corps
Which we are proud to serve;
In many a strife we’ve fought for life
And never lost our nerve;

If the Army and the Navy
Ever look on Heaven’s scenes;
They will find the streets are guarded
By United States Marines
.

I believe Mr. Murtha will have to answer to the sentries at the Pearly Gates for the passages listed in bold. St. Peter shall be the one to request admittance from. The thoughts of the Marine Sentries in Heaven will weigh heavily in the balance, I am sure.

And for whatever Honor you gave the Marines, Mr. Murtha, God Bless You. For whatever Dishonor you brought on them or yourself on their behalf, God Forgive You.

Murtha, Murtha me oh my.

Lord, this man was far from perfect, and we both know it, so please, could you see your way clear to show him some good ol’-fashioned Murtha?

And we pray, may the Lord show him Murtha and love, as this man showed Murtha to the people of Johnstown, Washington D.C. and Haditha; wipe away his sins and soutures and make him whole; and redeploy him from Walter Reed to that great Okinawa in the sky.

RD on February 9, 2010 at 3:01 PM

With no evidence to back this up, I’m convinced that he had Alzheimer’s or another condition late in life that affected his judgement and emotional state. I met Murtha on a number of occasions in the 1990s while working on defense policy issues, when he was considered a Defense Hawk. Despite getting very animated and energetic over defense issues, I never witnessed him have the emotional outbursts and tear fests we remember him for today. I recall seeing him have a tear fest over an issue, perhaps Haditha, not sure, and thinking, “Wow, what the hell happened to this guy?? This isn’t the guy I remember dealing with years ago.”

But around the same time, a family member started exhibiting signs of Alzheimers. It was devastating, but Murtha’s behavior seemed to fit with the onset of Alzheimers. People associate it with memory loss, but its much deeper than that, causing judgement issues and emotional mood swings and outbursts.

So based only on having dealt with him, then watching his behavior later in the context of dealing with a family member with Alzheimers I’m very sure that Murtha had a condition like that. It would of course be concealed or he’d lose re-election, and the Democrats really don’t care so long as a warm breathing body occupies a seat and votes the right way. Tragic, I feel sorry for his family’s loss even though late in life he hurt the very same defense issues he’d fought for most of his career.

This has to be prefaced by the DI with night duty shouting:

“Turn on the radio!”

Followed by a precision chorus, all laying at attention in their racks, shouting back:

“Sir, turn on the radio, Aye-Aye, Sir!

“From the halls of Montezoo-ooo-ma…..”

That’s simply how it has to be sung.

Wadduya\’ wanna\’ bet the Murtha votes in the next election. Ted Kennedy too.This is why a Republican candidate needs at least a 2% lead to win any election.

MaiDee on February 9, 2010 at 4:29 PM

Im sure lots of people have done good things in their youth like serve in the military or whatever what have you but john murtha was a discrace to the constitution that he took an oath to serve. theres no two ways about it.

One thing I saw time and again during MY 22 years as a Marine (CAPITAL M, retired Former Marine), what goes around comes around Jackov (lower case m, “ex” marine).

Time for another Obama “campaign visit”!

Roy Rogers on February 9, 2010 at 4:53 PM

I always thought Murtha was a dirt bag. I can’t help it, but I feel a sense of relief. Ordinarily I would wish he RIP, but in his case, I hope he is confronted by the thousands of great Marines he disgraced and has that burden throught his afterlife. I can’t find it in my heart to say anything good about him because I can’t think of anything good about him. He represented everything I loath about Washington.

Well, that puts my 4 in perspective. 22 gets a CAPITAL M. No doubt about it.

I think the best and most respectful thing to do in honoring the passing of Murtha is to elect a good conservative to replace his seat.

William Russel and Tim Burns are the only two competitors for Murtha’s seat right now.

Its time to drive another nail in the coffin of ObamaCare.

Conservative Samizdat on February 9, 2010 at 6:45 PM

After all the service to his country, it’s a shame that his legacy is so disgusting. But then, that’s the path he chose.

NNtrancer on February 9, 2010 at 7:15 PM

The dead horse is dead. Quit wasting energy on kicking it and get on to putting a wise, honest conservative in that seat.
