Murtha dead at 77

posted at 3:18 pm on February 8, 2010 by Allahpundit

There was no shortage of things to criticize — search our archives for “pork,” “Abscam,” “ethics,” or “Haditha,” for starters — but there’s also no need to kick the coffin while friends and family are grieving. Let’s accentuate the positive. From WaPo’s obituary, semper fi:

He entered the Marine Corps in 1952, during the Korean War period, and served until 1955. He returned to Johnstown to run the family car wash and finish his undergraduate degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1962, and he joined the Marine Corps Reserve. During the Vietnam conflict, he volunteered for combat and served near Da Nang in 1966 and 1967.

In 1955, he married Joyce Bell. She survives, along with their daughter, Donna Murtha ; twin sons, Pat Murtha and John M. Murtha ; and three grandchildren…

Rep. Murtha, whose military decorations included the Bronze Star and two awards of the Purple Heart, was one of the first Vietnam veterans to sit in the House. His district returned him regularly to office, and after 10 years, Rep. Murtha had quietly established himself as a key Capitol Hill player who could woo lawmakers of divergent views to join forces.

I remember seeing a few days ago that he was in the hospital for surgery but assumed he was out of the woods because he was in stable condition. Not so — for good reason:

The 77-year-old Democrat underwent scheduled laparoscopic surgery to remove his gallbladder at Bethesda Naval Hospital last Thursday but then, after his release, sought care at the Virginia Hospital Center over the weekend.

The congressman’s spokesman declined to say Tuesday what led him to be hospitalized again. But responding to questions Wednesday, he said that Murtha was in stable condition. Two persons said it appeared Murtha’s intestine had been cut inadvertently during the gall bladder removal.

The two obvious political questions: Who’ll succeed him as the new powerbroker on defense spending in the House? And what will this do to the race in PA-12, a district that’s ever so slightly Republican-leaning according to the Cook Report? Like Ace says, that election may have less to do with the deficit and ObamaCare than who can promise the most earmarks to a community that’s been gorging on them for years.

Update: More on the Murtha family’s history of military service from the AP, which doesn’t flinch at his many ethics imbroglios:

Military service was in Murtha’s blood. He said his great-grandfather served in the Civil War, his father and three uncles in World War II, and his brothers in the Marine Corps.

He left Washington and Jefferson College in 1952 to join the Marines, where he rose through the ranks to become a drill instructor at Parris Island, S.C., and later served in the 2nd Marine Division.

Murtha moved back to Johnstown and remained with the Marine Reserves until he volunteered to go to Vietnam. He served as an intelligence officer there from 1966 to 1967 and received a Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts.

Update: A special election will be called within 60 days to fill Murtha’s seat for the rest of the year. The winner, obviously, will enjoy an incumbency advantage in November. It’s a jump ball:

With Murtha gone, however, the special election will be seriously contested. Murtha’s district is the only one in the country won by Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) in 2004 and by Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) in 2008, according to Republican sources, and that trend line coupled with the volatile national environment for Democrats ensures Republicans will heavily target the contest.

But, I didn’t comment on a fogw post. He commented on mine. I have reasons for silence that a little perspective on my background might explain.

What? There should be no penalty for dissing your Creator? Ever?

Why would we even need God in that case?

Service to his country aside, Murtha leaves the legacy of a Career Corruptocrat. It will be interesting to see how the lefty media tries to spin that into one of honorable service.

I, for one, have made few attempts to obscure my identity behind a user name. Personally, it goes against the grain to hide who I am and what I write, but that’s just me. I fully understand and respect the safety concerns others hold and their reasons for protecting their anonymity. All good reasons, all valid concerns.

Out of curiosity, ‘father’, what do you suppose happens if and when Allahpundit’s super-seekrit IRL identity is found out? Do you think he’ll pop like a soap bubble? Do you think he’ll melt like the evil witch in the Wizard of Oz? Will you write him nasty letters and make threatening, very anonymous phone calls? I’ve made enemies on these Internets, some of them genuine bad guys, so I can say I’ve been there, done that, sport, yet here I am, sarcasm dial set all the way up. So get a grip. It’s out of sensitivity to the dead person’s family, while they are grieving.

I really don’t care who he is… I don’t think he is worth it , the attention, whether his identity is known or not.

But he protects it like liberals protect Abortion.

But I wonder if he’d post as he does “I like Murtha, please don’t kick his caskets, RIP”.

What did Murtha do to the US Troops???

I wonder if he’d post as he does if his real name and picture were on the Internet, like WikiPedia.

I think wrong assumptions were made on both sides. I also think it’s over.

I wouldn’t call it stupid for being fully aware of John Kerry’s treasonous activities. They are well documented.

You might say someone is stupid for being unaware, but most race baiting liberals I encounter don’t seem to have much of a clue about anything they are talking about, although some pretend.

father, you’d have to ask the guy, but I’m thinking of course Allahpundit would post as he does under his own name: obviously, naturally. Why wouldn’t he? We’re not talking about the King of Internet Porn here. He’s a respected, widely read conservative blogger. It isn’t as if common knowledge of his ‘Allahpundit’ persona would compromise or tarnish his reputation–unless, of course, he’s living incognito in San Francisco or some other bastion of moonbattery. Imagine the awkward silence descending as he enters a room, the accusatory glances from his neighbors, the S&M leatherboy riots outside his window every night.

If you had half a brain you would realize this is an internet phenomenon, and not progressive or conservative. You see it here and you see it at DKOS and other places. Would these commentors behave this way if faced, in real life, with a grieving relatively of Murtha’s? No they wouldn’t, but the internet gives them the anonymity to say and behave in ways that commonsense and decent manners would prevent. I suspect you know all this though, since you’re playing your on little sympathy games.

Regardless of how disliked or embarrassing a person was in life, no matter how corrupt they were considered, or what crimes they had committed, the moment they leave this mortal life, an Iron Curtain rises into place causing the deceased to be remembered as being better than they were, by most anyway. For some people, the reasoning is that they themselves will die someday and they don’t want the precedent set for negative talk about them, while for others the reasoning is that at the very least the deceased cannot continue to do the foul things they were reviled for anymore.

So the king of pork went to his grave never apologizing to the Marines he slandered.

I’m not a Marine, but if they wish to bid him adieu and Semper Fi, then so be it. The way I see it, he broke his faith to them and, as Judas did to Jesus, he betrayed them for 30 pieces of silver. Interesting that both died of intestinal issues (Acts 1:8)

As for me, Murtha was flat out and absolutely corrupt – such that it rendered the honor of his family moot. It’s one thing to be flawed – we all are – it’s another thing to relish corruption and mischief. The. End.

RIP Rep. Murtha

Let this be a “Teachable Moment”. He, as a young man saw fit to serve his Country, he went home, only to serve it again. Truly admirable, nobody can dispute that. Once in Washington, he served himself, and his constituents, on our dime. His reputation for pork rivals Robert Byrd. Washington is a cess-pool, they always start out well intentioned only to use us as the path to power. Our dollars are their insurance policy to re-election, they get greedy, we all suffer for it, but not them.
Jack Murtha IS the poster child of term limits. I always saw him as part of the problem, but as with Teddy K, I only wished him voted out of office.

Rest in Peace Sir.

I think a freshman Democrat is going to have a heck of a time because even a pro-Military freshman Republican is going to look better than a Democrat. Watch the Democrats put up a Progressive after the primary on top of it instead of a recruited candidate like Sestak who can look like a PA hawk (on first glance)

I just left FB and came here, and wouldn’t you know it? I knew after seeing a post on FB about Murtha’s demise that someone would bring up his military service.

That means absolutely nothing when compared to the hatred he has shown for everyday Americans? Examples? Calling his constituents redneck racists, taking advantage of his constituents by ripping off the government, and so on.

I’m tired of people like Murtha who think themselves above reproach and believe they are entitled to a seat in congress being played up as though they have done no wrong. Murtha is gone, so, taking a page from the fascists’ playbook, let’s look at this as an opportunity to reclaim a seat for America.

That’s sick, just sick. I wasn’t a huge fan of Murtha, but using him to further agendas. I understood it with Kennedy (sort of), but it’s just getting out of hand. It’s almost like in their heads they celebrate it because they think “We can use this!!!”

…as Judas did to Jesus, he betrayed them for 30 pieces of silver. Interesting that both died of intestinal issues (Acts 1:8)

AH_C on February 8, 2010 at 7:52 PM

Not exactly:

http://www.gotquestions.org/Judas-die.html

Question: “How did Judas die?”

Answer: Matthew 27:5-8 says, “So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself. The chief priests picked up the coins and said, ‘It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.’ So they decided to use the money to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners. That is why it has been called the Field of Blood to this day.” Acts 1:18-19 says, “With the reward he got for his wickedness, Judas bought a field; there he fell headlong, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out. Everyone in Jerusalem heard about this, so they called that field in their language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.” Which is correct? Did Judas hang himself or did he fall? Did Judas buy the field or did the priests buy the field?

Judas hung himself in the potters field (Matthew 27:5) and then after his body decayed and bloated, evidently the rope broke and he burst into pieces on the land of the potters field (Acts 1:18-19). This passage presumes Judas’ hanging, as a man falling down in a field does not result in his body bursting open. Only decomposition and a fall from a height could cause a body to burst open. When Judas threw the thirty pieces of silver down, the priests took the money and used it to buy the potter’s field (Matthew 27:7), not knowing that Judas was going to hang himself there. Judas may not have purchased the field himself, but it was the money Judas received for betraying Jesus that purchased the field.

My first reaction to Rep. Murtha’s death was one of shock. That’s routine surgery, the same kind my husband had years ago. It freaks me out to think that there might have been fatal complications!

I had no respect for Rep. Murtha at all when he was alive. I would have been ecstatic to see him out of office — by any other means than death. I believe he is now before God in judgment, and which of us can stand before God and be justified by our own actions? Not one of us, no matter how “good” we try to be. May God have mercy on his soul, forgive all his sins, and send comfort to his family.

The bizarre end for Congressman Not So Semper Fi brings the thought of Karmic Justice to mind. It’s that thought that keeps me mostly in line and dampens the urge for making the kind of remarks that quickly came to me. But in all honesty, I’ve thought about it. Quite a bit.

Death creates a prejudice in favor of the deceased. I should like to find someone who knew John Murtha and who does not know that he is dead! Then, perhaps, I should hear what is useful to me — the truth.

this is an internet phenomenon, and not progressive or conservative. You see it here and you see it at DKOS and other places. Would these commentors behave this way if faced, in real life, with a grieving relatively of Murtha’s? No they wouldn’t, but the internet gives them the anonymity to say and behave in ways that commonsense and decent manners would prevent.

nico on February 8, 2010 at 8:20 PM

Having read almost all the comments I will give my thoughts. I met John Murtha here in Mn when he was stumping for Collen Rowley( the FBI employee who falsely made herself more than she was). He and she falsely stated that the use of our VFW hall would be for veteran’s issues yet was used for fund raising. I was aware of his accusations of the Haditha Marines. When he came around to we veterans, he came to me, a combat Marine of Vietnam, and said we were brothers. I said, ” No sir.. the day you took bribes , and called Marines murderers, you became an ex-Marine”. I say this for transparency. Do I think his service to Pennsylvania was honorable?… NO! Do I think his service to the Corps was honorable?… Yes, while he served. I ramble on this way because now that he has passed on.,he , alone, must answer to Marines in heaven for his actions, he alone must answer to his God, for his corruptness. It is not for me to judge. I wish his family peace and solace at their loss. Oh, and Semper Fi to the honor of Marines he so dirtied and would not apologize to when found in error of his comments.

Well said!

Sometimes, in a reflective mood, I wonder about little Baby Adolf, who once looked out at the world from his mother’s arms with wide innocent eyes and might have grown up to be an artist… and wonder how in the world he managed to grow up to be, instead, one of the most loathsome beings the world has ever known, and a byword for evil.

I think it’s appropriate, when pondering the wickedness of Hitler the man and mourning the loss to the whole world of the 6 million people he caused to be tortured to death, to also mourn the loss of Adolf the child and all the potential for good that was killed in him by his own, later self.

So let it be with little Jack, and COL John Murtha USMC.

(For the record, this freaks me out a bit more than most because my husband actually had a surgery to have part of his intestines removed due to Crohn’s disease causing a blockage. Oh, every Judas once loved a Jesus
But betrayal may seize us
You may end up in hell
If your principles you sell
Caught in the middle
Of a dangerous riddle
Do only fools by golden rules play?
There may come a day when you trade your soul away!

father, you’d have to ask the guy, but I’m thinking of course Allahpundit would post as he does under his own name: obviously, naturally. Imagine the awkward silence descending as he enters a room, the accusatory glances from his neighbors, the S&M leatherboy riots outside his window every night.

troyriser_gopftw on February 8, 2010 at 6:25 PM

So why doesn’t he reveal himself?

Michelle Malkin is well known to the public and so is Ed. They are better writers than Allahpundit.

In 30 years, at the age of 50 will Alla Pundit still be known as Alla Pundit?

Like I said I don’t care but he knows how to push buttons.

Murtha himself “killed” something about our service men and Armed Services; I give my condolences to those soldiers.

And why did he sell out the soldiers? For 3 short years of political gain?

Well, he is Dead now. Ahem, scumbag, ahem. I’m sure of it; I just kicked his casket again and he didn’t move.

And to that one poster, I don’t feel embarrassed.

—- Back to are regularly scheduled program —

Murtha was a stand guy; a real shoulder you could lean on. He never slandered a soul. He never spoke a lie.

He was a pillar of the political landscape, of not only the US, but of – indeed – the World.

My sincere condolence to Rep. Murtha’s family and loved ones. After all love is unconditional especially when it comes from God. I am grateful that I was taught at an early age that it is a serious moral offence to lie. Even now I do follow this teaching sometimes I fall short but I still mantain my belief. I have met people who either were not taught this or refused to believe it in their lives. It is sad to see them struggle and then give up all together and believe their own fabrications of the truth to be true. It is at this point that I believe they loose a sense of reality and in a way lose their sanity. It is a sad thing to witness the way these individuals suffer either through drug/substance abuse, reputation and sometimes to the level of criminal behavior. I pray for these people to realize their wrong doings and mend their ways! HEY ONE ITEM IN THE TEA PARTY PURITY CRITERIA FOR POTENTIAL SHOULD BE A ZERO TOLERANCE FOR ALCOHOLICS AND DRUG ABUSERS Noone seems to recognize that this country is being run by a bunch of drunks and has been for years !!!!!
