Murtha dead at 77
posted at 3:18 pm on February 8, 2010 by Allahpundit
There was no shortage of things to criticize — search our archives for “pork,” “Abscam,” “ethics,” or “Haditha,” for starters — but there’s also no need to kick the coffin while friends and family are grieving. Let’s accentuate the positive. From WaPo’s obituary, semper fi:
He entered the Marine Corps in 1952, during the Korean War period, and served until 1955. He returned to Johnstown to run the family car wash and finish his undergraduate degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1962, and he joined the Marine Corps Reserve. During the Vietnam conflict, he volunteered for combat and served near Da Nang in 1966 and 1967.
In 1955, he married Joyce Bell. She survives, along with their daughter, Donna Murtha ; twin sons, Pat Murtha and John M. Murtha ; and three grandchildren…
Rep. Murtha, whose military decorations included the Bronze Star and two awards of the Purple Heart, was one of the first Vietnam veterans to sit in the House. His district returned him regularly to office, and after 10 years, Rep. Murtha had quietly established himself as a key Capitol Hill player who could woo lawmakers of divergent views to join forces.
I remember seeing a few days ago that he was in the hospital for surgery but assumed he was out of the woods because he was in stable condition. Not so — for good reason:
The 77-year-old Democrat underwent scheduled laparoscopic surgery to remove his gallbladder at Bethesda Naval Hospital last Thursday but then, after his release, sought care at the Virginia Hospital Center over the weekend.
The congressman’s spokesman declined to say Tuesday what led him to be hospitalized again. But responding to questions Wednesday, he said that Murtha was in stable condition. Two persons said it appeared Murtha’s intestine had been cut inadvertently during the gall bladder removal.
The two obvious political questions: Who’ll succeed him as the new powerbroker on defense spending in the House? And what will this do to the race in PA-12, a district that’s ever so slightly Republican-leaning according to the Cook Report? Like Ace says, that election may have less to do with the deficit and ObamaCare than who can promise the most earmarks to a community that’s been gorging on them for years.
Update: More on the Murtha family’s history of military service from the AP, which doesn’t flinch at his many ethics imbroglios:
Military service was in Murtha’s blood. He said his great-grandfather served in the Civil War, his father and three uncles in World War II, and his brothers in the Marine Corps.
He left Washington and Jefferson College in 1952 to join the Marines, where he rose through the ranks to become a drill instructor at Parris Island, S.C., and later served in the 2nd Marine Division.
Murtha moved back to Johnstown and remained with the Marine Reserves until he volunteered to go to Vietnam. He served as an intelligence officer there from 1966 to 1967 and received a Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts.
Update: A special election will be called within 60 days to fill Murtha’s seat for the rest of the year. The winner, obviously, will enjoy an incumbency advantage in November. It’s a jump ball:
With Murtha gone, however, the special election will be seriously contested. Murtha’s district is the only one in the country won by Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) in 2004 and by Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) in 2008, according to Republican sources, and that trend line coupled with the volatile national environment for Democrats ensures Republicans will heavily target the contest.

Ugly on February 8, 2010 at 3:19 PM
Shame.
Only because I would have liked to see him lose his seat in Congress first.
Or be sent to prison.

This is Dave not speaking ill of the dead.
Dave R. on February 8, 2010 at 3:20 PM
dude. saw this on CNN. Man. Thought he’d live to be 100, still porking out.
RIP. I may not have like you Murtha. But I’ll pray for ya.
Trov on February 8, 2010 at 3:20 PM
That’s rather serious medical malpractice to cut the intestine and not even notice it until the patient started getting worse.
Enoxo on February 8, 2010 at 3:20 PM
Uh-oh. His intestines were cut?
About his death, I will just follow the Golden Rule. RIP.
JAM on February 8, 2010 at 3:20 PM
Yikes, that’s horrible.
Dash on February 8, 2010 at 3:20 PM
I don’t want any crap in this thread like the left pulled on Limbaugh when he went to the hospital. If you insist on kicking the coffin, do it somewhere else.

Bye.

Fuzzlenutter on February 8, 2010 at 3:21 PM
Everyone here knows that every left-wing blog will seize on any horrible comment and use it to bash us as heartless.
I don’t think I agreed with a single policy the man supported, but Christ… he’s dead. Leave him and his family alone.
Troika37 on February 8, 2010 at 3:21 PM
Married for 55 years! That’s an accomplishment worth praising these days.
AubieJon on February 8, 2010 at 3:21 PM
Condolences to his family, but as an American it’s always sad when a public servant dies and his legacy will be nothing but graft, corruption, and dirty machine politics. It could have been something more, something better.

RIP, condolences to family and friends.

To his family and friends, my deepest sympathies.
For his honorable service as a Marine, and his efforts in defending our country, I am humbly in his debt.
That’s all I have to say about that……

There won’t be any Marines where he’s going.

think if i post something bad about Murtha I could be “The Worst Person in the World”?
lavell12 on February 8, 2010 at 3:24 PM
No kidding. This is a lawsuit waiting to happen. It’s unfortunate, but serious surgery can often result in these kinds of mistakes. Every time you go under the knife, there’s a chance for this.
Sydney Carton on February 8, 2010 at 3:25 PM
I feel no emotion of any kind and see no reason to fake it for him. He will be “rewarded” for his work here on Earth and that’s OK with me. We all pay the piper eventually.
Extrafishy on February 8, 2010 at 3:25 PM
That sucks.

One less vote for SanFran Nan. Bummer!
Hope that wasn’t “kicking the coffin” too much.

I’ll never understand how a retired Marine could have undermined our mission in Iraq and our troops in the field, like John Murtha did.
This sailor will not miss him. The only good things I have to say about him is that he lived an interesting life (at taxpayer expense) and that he seemed to be a decent enough family man.
NoDonkey on February 8, 2010 at 3:25 PM
Something positive: Now Teddy Kennedy has a roommate.
radioboyatl on February 8, 2010 at 3:25 PM
Why try?
darii on February 8, 2010 at 3:26 PM
I didn’t even know he was seriously ill. I won’t rejoice over his death but I wish his congressional career had been shorter so that he could have lived out his last years peacefully with his family and safely away from congressional power.
jwolf on February 8, 2010 at 3:26 PM

My condolences to his widow and his family, who I’m sure are all grieving right now.

I won’t say anything about Murtha’s passing. Let the man rest in peace. But I am glad that someone else will be representing his district next year.
Doughboy on February 8, 2010 at 3:27 PM
…Or more accurately, you’ll announce that you have nothing nice to say, thereby making your juvenile point anyway. Creep.
The Race Card on February 8, 2010 at 3:27 PM
Agreed. My condolences to his family and prayers offered.
Often, it is better to defeat a worthy foe on the battlefield, or in this case, in the arena of politics. So, It would have been far sweeter to have him lose his seat in November than to go out this way.

JeffinOrlando on February 8, 2010 at 3:27 PM
Yea, Obama can call him a corpse-man and finally be correct!
Conservalicious on February 8, 2010 at 3:27 PM
It is. My parents have been married that long. And my dad fought in the Korean war too.
But my dad never insulted the people of PA (people Murtha was presumably elected to represent) by calling them rednecks. And my dad never insulted our armed forces fighting overseas. And my dad was never involved in any massive corruption scandals like Murtha was for pretty much his entire political career.
I suspect that, when my dad dies, he is going to quite a different place than John Murtha. Enough said.
UltimateBob on February 8, 2010 at 3:27 PM
Rest in peace John!
Dread Pirate Roberts VI on February 8, 2010 at 3:27 PM
They “accidentally/inadvertently” cut his intestines?! I hope his family pushes to have an investigation into that, quite frankly. I’m not one for pushing malpractice suits, particularly for frivolous ones that are somewhat difficult to believe/prove guilt or fault upon (like Edwards and the CP babies and C-sections or whatnot), but in this case, I think they should make sure this doesn’t happen again.
(For the record, this freaks me out a bit more than most because my husband actually had a surgery to have part of his intestines removed due to Crohn’s disease causing a blockage. I can’t imagine if this had happened to him–accidentally nicking another part of the body and then dying because of it…)
JediArashi on February 8, 2010 at 3:27 PM
Condolences to his family. May the judgement he receives in death be equal to the judgments he made in life.
RIP

The hypocrisy is thick on this thread. Ugh.
Grow Fins on February 8, 2010 at 3:28 PM
Well, it’s funny to think these guys in DC are not spring chickens. Kennedy’s death was a long drawn out expected thing as opposed to this shocker today. But it shouldn’t surprise, they are old guys! I forget that.
RIP.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out politically.

What congressman will crooked Arabs brib now?
lavell12 on February 8, 2010 at 3:28 PM
Exactly. As much as I didn’t like him as a congressman, he was still a person. If we can’t give basic respect at someone’s death, then we don’t deserve it either.
RIP, Murtha.
Esthier on February 8, 2010 at 3:28 PM
Not happy Murtha is dead but frankly I can think of a lot of other people I would feel more sad about if they had died.
I honor his service as a Marine, that’s all I can say.

Sounds like he started out like a decent guy, just like Randall “Duke” Cunningham. Washington DC is a corrupting place. Politicians should not stay in power for that long.
rbj on February 8, 2010 at 3:29 PM
Not sure I understand the purpose of the thread. I hate it when people die, but I didn’t know the man personally. Seems to me speculation on his successor this soon might also be a bit grisly.

If everyone were trashing him, you’d be whining about that as well. So who’s really the hypocrite?
Disturb the Universe on February 8, 2010 at 3:30 PM
This is one of the risks of laproscopic surgery; it gives the surgeon less overall visibility for the surgeon, visibility that would have easily seen this. However, it does have the major benefit of being far less traumatic than traditional technics, for someone of his age, it was a lower risk.
RIP to a former Marine (there are NO ex-Marines).

I once was lost, but now am found.
Was blind , but now I see.
Prayers to Mr.Murtha, and family, and friends. I know loss, and the pain it brings. So my heart goes out to all who grieve. We may not have agreed politically, but I will pray that you go with God, and have peace.

Rare (0.2%), but known complication of that procedure.
Aviator on February 8, 2010 at 3:34 PM
I’ll be interested to see who the first Democrat is who uses Murtha’s death as a justification for passing ObamaCare® (given the chance, I’m sure they’d turn his funeral into a Wellstone-like rally for national health care, but the investigations Murtha was facing will probably make the funeral a far-more low-keyed event, since a lot of information about alleged sweetheart deals and illegal government contracts that had been held back by political concerns will now probably start dribbling out over the next few months).
jon1979 on February 8, 2010 at 3:34 PM
I frankly don’t get the point of posting this. I mean it was in the headlines… isn’t that enough? Or is this Allah’s attempt to appear bipartisan and “holier than thou” by saying “Oh let’s not kick his coffin or make the blog look bad.”
Then why even post it. When Rush mentioned it at the end of his show I was like “Oh wow, that’s unexpected” and that’s pretty much all I had to say. What’s the point in this except for the previous reason I mentioned in my first paragraph?
MobileVideoEngineer on February 8, 2010 at 3:34 PM
Then don’t bother posting at all, maybe?
YYZ on February 8, 2010 at 3:34 PM
I find that sad. If it were someone we cared about, and loved, and admired…we’d be hurt by the vitriol, and we have been. Two wrongs don’t make a right. Ideologically we didn’t agree with Murtha, but he’s gone now. The best we can do, is pray for him, and wish him peace from here on out. Remember..we’ll be the better person for it. :)
capejasmine on February 8, 2010 at 3:34 PM

My apologies for kicking the coffin, Allah… Won’t happen again.
I guess that behavior like Murtha’s over the years doubly irritates me, having been in the service myself.
I was out of line, and apologize again.
