House GOP to Obama: We’ll meet with you about ObamaCare — if you agree to start over
posted at 7:06 pm on February 8, 2010 by Allahpundit
No more reconciliation, no more backroom deals, no more dictating terms. A clean start to the process, or else they’re “reluctant” to waste their time on his little photo op. That ain’t gonna happen, needless to say: The main reason the Dems are desperate to pass O-Care at this point is simply to get their base to turn out in November, and a bill that’s watered down with real concessions to the GOP simply won’t accomplish that. If anything, it could suppress turnout as the left stays home in disgust at having had to compromise with Rethuglikkkans despite a year with a 60-vote majority. The GOP doesn’t have any incentive to compromise either, really, since tea partiers will revolt at any bill that expands federal oversight of health care. So all this is about is political posturing and framing the narrative in a way that’ll deliver the most votes in November.
In which case, this letter from Boehner and Cantor to Rahm Emanuel is a nice bit of framing.
Assuming the President is sincere about moving forward on health care in a bipartisan way, does that mean he will agree to start over so that we can develop a bill that is truly worthy of the support and confidence of the American people? Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said today that the President is “absolutely not” resetting the legislative process for health care. If the starting point for this meeting is the job-killing bills the American people have already soundly rejected, Republicans would rightly be reluctant to participate.
Assuming the President is sincere about moving forward in a bipartisan way, does that mean he has taken off the table the idea of relying solely on Democratic votes and jamming through health care reform by way of reconciliation? As the President has noted recently, Democrats continue to hold large majorities in the House and Senate, which means they can attempt to pass a health care bill at any time through the reconciliation process. Eliminating the possibility of reconciliation would represent an important show of good faith to Republicans and the American people…
Will the President be inviting officials and lawmakers from the states to participate in this discussion? As you may know, legislation has been introduced in at least 36 state legislatures, similar to the proposal just passed by the Democratic-controlled Virginia State Senate, providing that no individual may be compelled to purchase health insurance. Additionally, governors of both parties have raised concerns about the additional costs that will be passed along to states under both the House and Senate bills…
Finally, as you know, this is the first televised White House health care meeting involving the President since last March. Many health care meetings of the closed-door variety have been held at the White House since then, including one last month where a sweetheart deal was worked out with union leaders. Will the special interest groups that the Obama Administration has cut deals with be included in this televised discussion?
More at the link. I think this is a bluff, incidentally — the GOP’s not actually going to boycott The One’s invite for a televised meeting lest it seem petulant — but using the invite as a platform to raise these issues before accepting is a shrewd move. Via the Right Scoop, here’s Limbaugh from today’s show reminding them that there’s nothing wrong, and plenty right, with saying no no no.

Much Better, less worried now. Still I have concerns over the GOPs propensity for getting trapped inside paper bags.

Dear Liar made the opening gambit, this is a good counter move.
1) The Whine is not for resetting, in which case why have the meeting, it would be seen as purely a cynical public relations move — very transparent.
2)He does go for a reset — which then pisses off Congressional Democrats.

The unfortunate thing is they should have said no, hell no right at the get go. Now that they are sucked in they need to find a way to a undick themselves from the shortsighted dicking they did to themselves for agreeing to meet in the first place.

What’s the point in negotiating with the president? He’s not the one crafting the legislation or scheduling the votes. The president can make all sorts of promises, but it is Nancy and Harry that matter.

You may recall that Gibbs or some other flack several days ago that they were very close to having enough votes to pass the Senate version in the House.
Well, Pelosi just lost one of the votes she already had in the bag.

I wouldn’t meet with Soetoro under any current conditions. This is all a scam to place blame on Republicans and Conservatives.
Ricohoc on February 8, 2010 at 7:16 PM
I’m hearing right out of the mouth of Kathleen Sebelius, that Obama won’t scrap the bill and start “peacemealing” something together.
And also from Mara Liason’s mouth…..”reconciliation would have to be passed by April, if they were going to move in that direction. That must be a rule we don’t know about?
This is nothing more than an opportunity for Barry to put his face on the boob tube yet again and then blame the Republican’s if nothing gets done.

When building a house of cards, one does not bluff. You simply play your card gently but deliberately. If successful, you back away with the still of the night, without so much as a breath, and allow your opponent to attempt place the next card.
If the structure is without the necessary form or design, it will collapse when he plays his next card.

upinak on February 8, 2010 at 7:23 PM
Did she mention April, as in a rule of congress, or was she referring to April for political reasons? It’s already getting to be mid February, and soon those up for re-election are going to need their time to campaign. So I assume if they plan on screwing us, the sooner the better, or so they think.
If they pass this, without bipartisan support, and against the will of the people, Democrats will forever be tainted. I think most of them know that now. However, they seem incapable of saying no to Pelosi, Reid, and Obama.

Thank God the GOP is showing some sneer. HELL NO, take your crappy bills and run back to Harry and Nancy with your tail between your legs, Barry!
anniekc on February 8, 2010 at 7:32 PM
She really made it sound like a rule.
But now my paranoia meter just jumped sky high when I heard this.
The Obama administration is asking why Anthem Blue Cross is raising its health insurance rates by nearly 40 percent for some California customers while making handsome profits — and is pointing to the rate hike as evidence of why health care reform needs to pass.
Why do I think that this is a setup between the White House and Blue Cross in order to gain more sympathy to pass healthcare? Do I need to take my tinfoil hat off?
Knucklehead on February 8, 2010 at 7:33 PM
Could you just see the viens in Emanuels forehead ballooning while he read this, along with a few dozen “f**k you Boehners”. Obama’s children in the WH can’t even orchestrate another meeting to load their cannons with more explosive rhetoric. My advice to the Axman and Emanuel: fishing for sharks that smell blood in the water requires Red Meat….not this silly attempt to draw Republicans back into a pitless lions den.

Not good enough. The Precedent is a pathological liar whose word cannot be trusted on ANYTHING. Nothing can be done on his word. Only AFTER the current attempt to nationally socialize health care is killed can the GOP talk to The Precedent about the next moves (and then they have to remember that nothing he says is worth spit).
Never do anything based on the word of the lying Precedent. He is the most dishonest person America has ever seen in the White House – by a longshot – and he needs to be treated commensurate with his obvious dishonesty and underhandedness.

One of the biggest threats to healthcare is tort reform and Obama cannot allow that to be a part of the solution. The billions gained by frivolous lawsuits are pay offs to the trial lawyers. They finacially own the party along with the unions. Even a mental midget like Howard Dean said that the democrats would never take them on.
volsense on February 8, 2010 at 7:37 PM
Riiiiight. The GOP will stand firm just like they did with their threat to read the entire Healthcare bill on the floor. This is a dog and pony show, photo-op, Kabuki, whatever you want to call it. If the GOP doesn’t figure out how to rope-a-dope the O Team, they can say “check.”

Speakup on February 8, 2010 at 7:45 PM
The Precedent does that because it’s in line with his goal of sowing chaos in America. He doesn’t really care about health care or anything of the sort. The Precedent just wants to bring pain to this nation, so he is more than happy to push unpopular legislation. The more unpopular, the better it is for The Precedent. And if it makes him look like a fool (as he always does) that works for him because it harms the office of the Presidency. Anything to demean, denigrate or harm our institutions and traditions is what has motivated The Precedent since he got in.
The Precedent’s useful idiot comrades on the Hill are starting to figure out that they are part of a suicide bombing, not a plain old robbery as they originally thought. But, that’s why they’re useful idiots.
neurosculptor on February 8, 2010 at 7:48 PM

Obama said he wants to look at what the GOP will offer to his healthcare bill. The GOP has every right to ask for a full report (including all notes/memos and bribes)from the Democrats closed door meetings. Lay it on the line, baby.
TN Mom on February 8, 2010 at 7:57 PM
I concur with this – as they say in Battlestar, “all this has happened before, and will happen again.”
If the GOP succeeds in retaking either the House, or the Senate, they will once again become the popularity-seeking mediaphiles that they were before, acting like Democrats in order to obtain media (and, by mistaken corrolary, societal) approval. Bad things lay down this road.
