“Green police” ad: good marketing for Audi?
posted at 2:20 pm on February 8, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
Super Bowl ads have a reputation of pushing the envelope artistically and strategically. Last night’s extravaganza certainly lived up to that billing, as Madison Avenue presented the brilliant and the baffling to a nation of viewers. One ad in particular stood out in the latter category, with many wondering whether it meant to entice people to buy the product — or to fear the end result of an overreaching government on environmental issues:
The ad works for me far better as a warning of an overreaching government dictating choices — like incandescent lightbulbs, paper vs plastic in the grocery store, and choice of cars. Audi may convince some people to look into its clean-diesel offerings, but the ad itself is likely to elicit more concern over the direction of regulatory efforts, especially at the EPA, which declared carbon dioxide a dangerous pollutant last year and has started the effort to regulate manufacturing as a way to get around the legislative hurdles to cap-and-trade bills in Congress.
If the government really does intend on creating regulation over these kinds of choices, a “green police” will not be far behind, although not in the humorous style presented here. It will instead insert itself in home purchases, car choices, energy rationing, and in the use of private property. Government will pick the winners and losers rather than a free people making their own choices, and they will use the power of government to ensure that those winners prevail for the purposes of a governing elite.
I suspect, though, that Audi was aiming at a very narrow slice of the market — those people who can afford to buy an Audi and who want to achieve the sanctimony of the driver at the end. In that sense, it’s entirely successful. Bear in mind that it’s that narrow market that wants to impose the Green Police solution on the rest of us.
Update: The boss has background on Audi’s pandering to the enviros here.
Update II: Chad at Fraters Libertas had the same reaction to the Dodge Charger commercial as I did.

they weren’t kidding, they weren’t’ giving a warning, and they weren’t doing more than slight mockery at best.
What you see is what they actually want, and are hoping for.
Use your web browser and search for Audi Green Police; or
http://www.audiusa.com/us/brand/en/models/a3_tdi/green_police.html
(stop the video as the page loads)
They’re not kidding, the want, and hope for a lessening of freedom and control of your choices. That’s their goal (somehow I suspect their lobbyists will be working on that legislation as well…)
They’re not innocuous and they’re not kidding.

They’re already there. You know how many hoops I had to jump through to buy my house? And heaven forbid I add a turnaround to my driveway. They even have people getting energy assessments on their homes in order to qualify for tax credits. They’re moving down the path as quickly as they can, which in most cases means using the executive branch to impose rules, regulations, requirements, licenses, and inspections.
We had a crane fall in at a local lake. None of the salvage crews would pull the crane out because of the EPA and OSHA requirements on the job. So the crane is being left in the lake to rust, spew oil and gas, and provide a hazard to swimmers and boaters. Welcome to the world of the Green Police.

Exactly.
Most people are just confused by all the bickering between the left and the right. The add shows a way to get past it all with a car that doesn’t suck.
It’s a very effective ad.

That’s why, to me, the ad is funny. They’re promoting conseration, and making fun of it, at the same time. In one web ad, they even say “I’m not sure about that part. But the rest of it is true.” Can you say IPCC?
hawksruleva on February 8, 2010 at 3:01 PM
My best guess is that Audi thought it was being cute, not realizing that the supposed goof they were making on environmental awareness was actually an accurate spirit of the age, as dictated by the collective media conscience. They’re in this to sell cars remember, and they’ll adapt in order to stay profitable.
It’s that tagline “Being Green Never Felt so Good” that I think clinches where they ultimately stand.
It’s like saying “yeah, eco-consciousness is a b!tch sometimes, and some people get carried away, but look at us. We’re ahead of that game. Give us a try!”
If Audi was truly mocking the green movement, they’d be sticking their thumbs in the noses of the eco-freaks by NOT making cars to appease them. They’re going along to get along, but they’re still doing it, a few laughs or not.
Personally, I thought it was funny, up til that last bit.
somewhatconcerned on February 8, 2010 at 3:02 PM
So, what happens if you use an illegal lightbulb? Don’t you have to pay a fine? What happens if you don’t pay a fine? Eventually, you’ll go to jail for contempt of court.
All laws rely on the government’s ability to use force to coerce compliance.

The Race Card on February 8, 2010 at 3:06 PM
I wonder if they aren’t doing that already. Audi has a pretty successful racing program, after all. Does the Paris-Dakar rally strike you as being eco-friendly? Despoiling the desert and all? My guess is that a good chunk of engineers tasked with making “clean cars” find the whole “science” of the Green movement to be laughable.
hawksruleva on February 8, 2010 at 3:07 PM
Well, I be sure to never buy anything from Audi.
Greg Q on February 8, 2010 at 3:07 PM
The tagline is “Being Green Never Felt so Right”.
Given the content of the commercial, this may be Audi’s attempt at a little subliminal messaging.

If it pisses of the Left (causes fear & loathing or promotes dissembling of cherished Leftist constructs) it’s a winner.

I thought this ad was funny. It’s funny, and could be true someday. It may overreach a bit, but that’s what satire does. As with so many of the ads produced, this one was so offensive that I now have a strong negative response against Audi that began with their ad last night.
The superbowl had far too many commercial breaks, none of which were really funny.
Who else recalls the old Budweiser bullfrog Superbowl ads that charmed everyone? Last night’s only attractive Budweiser ad featured the farm with the Clydesdale pony and Longhorn calf hat tip to storybook friendship. The other Bud ads like “survivor: LOST” were horrible–referencing really stupid idiots as those who drink their beer. I never liked Budweiser anyway, and given those ads, wonder who on earth wants to be associated as a blithering dumbbell who drinks that swill. I may have laughed had Budweiser spoofed ‘the most famous in the world’ Dos Equis spokesman for tongue in cheek humor.
maverick muse on February 8, 2010 at 3:20 PM
I am definitely unnerved by what that ad recognizes: an emerging “green” state intruding into our lives with its laws, fines, and insane public ostracisms for the even insignificant enviro-infractions.
All ads that aim for humor also aim for exaggeration, like this ad does — but it is no exaggeration that the “greens” want to claim the power to aggressively oppress all people, and the unaccountable institutional dukedoms from which they may sit in judgment and enforce that oppression.

We “got it” while watching. But rubbing one’s nose in sh!t won’t make one like it. Rubbing Audi with the stench of legalized PC leaves a bad impression–bad advertising technique if you’re trying to sell Audi. Good advertising technique if you’re trying to smear Audi.

I think the funniest part of this ad was lost on most people.
The electric car that the “green police” were using is a GEM Car. I owned one for 5 years. I sold it because I discovered that the set of 6 batteries had to be replaced every 18 months.
Six very heavy, deep cycle, marine batteries were required to propel the car up to a top speed of 25mph and a range of about 20 miles (when the batteries were new).
I often joked that the car would be more green if they used a damned internal combustion engine instead.
markfm on February 8, 2010 at 3:31 PM
Oddly, in light of the Cap and Trade bill still hanging around Congress, NOAA’s new Climate Change Office, the demand that the Pentagon conduct environmental assessments, threats of regulation from the EPA….. I think the Audi add may be one of those that becomes something quite different in the political narrative over the next campaign cycle. It now becomes a tool for pointing out how far the enviro-nazis can and will go if they are not reined in.

This ad answers that question.
And the fact that Audi thinks this will sell their cars… I hear it’s a great car. That should sell itself.
Maybe subconsciously even the left is worried about this kind of thing. How else could they encapsulate everything evil and wrong about environmentalism so very well.
Or maybe they are just so much smarter than we are!

Pretty sure this ad will not show in the former East Germany…The memory of Stasi secret police are still pretty fresh…Moreover, I would add that Germans are fundamentally out of step with Americans…This add is anathema to most and will only play well to the green fringe elements…As well, the germans had a large role in killing Chrysler with inept re-engineering of the Jeep line in particular.

Excellent “take” on Audi’s underlying motives for their ad campaign, Michelle.
I’m wondering how long it will take Audi to wake up to the political realities of dealing with the far Left/Progressive movements here in the USA. Wall Street finally hit their brick was of Rude Awakenings, so I would imagine that it won’t take much longer for Audi to also hit that brick wall. Especially in light of the negative campaign being waged by Obama’s Government Motors against Toyota.
Anyone who gets in bed with with the greens-enviro-hucksters, expect to get dirty in the process, in my opinion.

TexasDan on February 8, 2010 at 3:53 PM
Audi is a German brand…Make no mistake about it, Germans are very large players in Green movements…Politically, Euros and Germans in particular use the green movement to club the dumb Americans for wasting so much energy…What they have lost in political and military stature in the world they are attempting to co-opt through the green movement. Not sure how this add works for them. As mentioned here, it manages to insult nearly everyone’s sensibiilities…Of course, the far left environazis are probably wet themselves with delight…

We’re not so far from this kind of eco-police state. And that’s why the ad is so effecting, if not effective. Could we ever have predicted a few years back that kids would be getting marched out of schools in handcuffs for scribbling on desks with eraseable markers? (Or insert your own favorite zero-tolerance horror story. I have my own.) We see now that’s what you get when the control of the police apparatus was essentially turned over to the likes of middle school principals and vice-principals.
Put control of the police apparatus in the hands of Audi drivers and it’s pretty apparent this commercial shows what you’d get. Give Audi and its ad-people credit for knowing their customers.

Seems to me this commercial has the makings of a great commercial! Take it as is up to where the Audi is mentioned. Vashta.Nerada on February 8, 2010 at 4:26 PM
I don’t get this conspiracy theory among my peeps. Since my extremely conservative husband works at Audi, I have a little inside info – namely, it was created in fun. One of my FB friends said he thought Audi corporate officers have decided to take a bold stance on a hot button issue — namely US energy consumption. I believe that is an issue that matters to Audi, not because they want government to be a big brother, but because they want to build on their clean diesel technology in the US. Gas prices and consumption matter to all of us, especially when prices start creeping up again (and they will as O keeps devaluing our dollar). Audi took the issue up last summer with that ad with the barrels (“A U.S. EPA analysis found that if one-third of Americans fueled their cars, pick-ups and SUVs with clean diesel instead of gasoline, the United States could send back 1.5 million barrels of foreign oil per day”) and right now, they’re saying their “green vehicle of the year” A3 TDI lets consumers make a positive change now instead of waiting 15 years for electric vehicles — it gets 42 mpg highway (as my husband likes to say, highest in the luxury market and better than the Lexus hybrid). Plus they have two electric e-tron models being aggressively pursued. So they’re working towards options but I don’t believe in any way that they were making a statement about forcing consumers into green ways, aka Nancy Pelosi. I heard Rush say today that he thinks they were goofing on the greenies … I think Audi was just making a fun commercial using a great song, in hopes of bringing greater attention to its clean diesel cars.
eucher on February 8, 2010 at 4:34 PM
You missed the point. I was not bashing capitalism. “Them”, as in the established green movement who do not constitute a significant share of the conscious consuming public. “Them” as in those who lobby public policy to molest supply and demand economics. “Them” as in the liars and crooks who make up the IPCC, et al.
I’d love to hear if anyone has a profit/loss analysis of green cars to car manufacturers. My guess is that presently there is no reason for a car manufacturer to make them other than to appear hip to the jive. The only people I know who buy these cars are folks making some sort of statement. Why else shell out all that dough? They don’t save money in the long run.

Audi has a relatively small market share in the US, but still chose to spend their profits to sponsor the US Olympic Ski Team … did you catch the documentary they created, which aired on NBC last week? Obama spent a couple million tax dollars on a Super Bowl ad for the census … that bothers me more than a German car company that creates a tongue in cheek ad to focus America’s attention on well made, beautiful automobiles and efficient clean diesel.

But do you believe it has to do with Audi, or liberals gone wild in our government?

I prefer Ferrel’s Green Team.

CRR why no posts since the link about Incandescent bulbs in Britain. Weird how quiet you are. Oh and see my last post a couple minutes ago and while you are at it take your head out of your arse. I know it appears that is a permanent condition with you but I suspect we can save you yet.

And Palin uses her palm for a pad instead of wasting paper and she is mocked. I wish the libs would get their story straight.

When I was watching this ad I wondered where the heck it was going.
Then the elitist snob (read: Obama, Algore, et al.) was allowed to drive past all the other proletariat tripe.
Didn’t work for me. Of course, I drive a pickup truck so what do I know?

Not so sure. As a person of the right, I thought it the most pervertedly anti-individualist ads I’d ever seen. The ad’s message: fascism is funny as long as one is elitist enough to avoid its inconveniences.
But I’m not sure Audi even realizes it. This is what a someone in a society such as ours, at this state of decay, would have to produce sooner or later.
There was little chance I’d ever get an Audi. There is now none.
