Cohen drops out of IL race; Update: Video added

posted at 9:30 am on February 8, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Along with Scott Cohen’s departure from the Illinois lieutenant governor race goes the potential for months of blog posts.  Just think about it: we could have written endless stories about Cohen’s race, complete with quotes from the apparent myriad of legal actions against Cohen over the last few years, while Cohen ran on the slogan, “They never convicted me!”  Alas, it just wasn’t to be:

Illinois Democratic Lieutenant Governor nominee Scott Lee Cohen announced Sunday evening that he is withdrawing from the race amid revelations about his personal history.

Cohen, a millionaire pawnbroker and cleaning supplies company executive who emerged the victor in last week’s primary, had been accused of holding a knife to the neck of his ex-girlfriend, a prostitute, in 2005.

It has also been revealed in recent days that Cohen had once been accused of abusing an ex-wife. Cohen has also acknowledged using steroids for a period of time.

Cohen announced his decision to drop out of the race this evening at a Chicago bar.

In a bar?  Well, why not?  The setting does seem somewhat appropriate for a man who apparently lacked the insight to understand that domestic-violence accusations and an arrest for putting a knife to a prostitute’s neck might just be considered political baggage, even in Chicago.  Using “roid rage” as an excuse isn’t exactly a winner, either.

There are actually two mysteries still left to explore.  What made a man with this many skeletons in the closet spend $3 million of his own money to run for statewide office?  And what made most of the media ignore these allegations until after the primaries, even after some of them arose in the Chicago Sun-Times beforehand?

In case one is tempted to see Cohen’s withdrawal as a victory over Chicago politics as usual, his withdrawal after the primary means that state House speaker and power broker Michael Madigan gets to hand-pick the Democratic nominee, at least according to Politico.  Maybe that blog potential hasn’t entirely dissipated after all.

Update: Here’s the tearful withdrawal:

How did Cohen think he could get elected? He looked around at the other criminals and thugs elected from Illinois and thought “Hey, I guess I’m not so bad.”

Yeah, the guy’s a dirtbag, but so are most of the Democrats. He was open and honest in his campaign, and he won the most votes. He also spent a great deal of money and expended a great deal of effort.

The Democrat Party of Illinois response? Force him to quit the election and hand-pick the candidate from among their corrupt insiders.

This is absolutely unbelievable. They have illegally thrown out the entire Democrat primary result, and will appoint one of their corruptocrats.

Just when you thought the Illinois Democrats couldn’t sink any lower!

I bet those people who purchase cleaning supplies bring in a lot of great stuff to pawn.

Three million dollars for lieutenant governor. I’m guessing that position pays $150,000.00 +/-. I’m further guessing there is no legal political power to be used.

Gee, what could be worth three mil? In Illinois?

Ahh, but there’s still the drama of Giannoulias, the dem candidate for senator, with a shady family bank history, and the Blago trial this summer. There will be no shortage of embarrassment for Dems in Illinois. Actually I think the Dems are beyond shaming. It’s just the Chicago way.

Amazing. Obama is turning out to be the left’s worst nightmare. He’s in the process of discrediting and destroying liberalism, he’s destroyed the civil rights movement and set us back decades in race relations, he’s alienated indys from the Dems, he’s exposed and weakened the Chicago dem. machine, he’s made the media’s success dependent upon his own, he’s alienated jews from democrats, he’s weakened relations with our traditional allies while emboldening our enemies, he’s alienated the military and intell. agencies, he’s made a mockery of the cabinet, exposed the corruption in the Congress, corrupted the global warming movement, made a mockery of the Nobel prize, indebted us and left us unemployed and begging.

Way to go champ!

SouthernGent on February 8, 2010 at 9:57 AM

I have a feeling that the Dims did this on purpose. Now whoever gets to run hasn’t spend $3MM on a campaign and has a full purse. It’s getting to be a regular thing with Dems, putting somebody up at the last minute so that they can run in the general election. As one person above says, “Why have primaries in the first place.” But you probably do need a liberal judge to pull this off, and as we all know, there are so very few of those around.

Ahh, but there’s still the drama of Giannoulias, the dem candidate for senator, with a shady family bank history.

MADgirl91 on February 8, 2010 at 9:51 AM

Here’s our silver lining. I hope (yeah, fat chance of this) that the media focus on this dirtbag now because he is really rotten to the core. Cohen has a lot of personal baggage and is obviously unfit for office, but Giannoulias has IMHO a far greater potential for outright corruption. He’s much more dangerous, plus the office he seeks is more important.

jwolf on February 8, 2010 at 10:02 AM

Now they’ll just have to find a corrupt and incompetent Democrat who hasn’t held a knife to his/her prostitute girlfriend’s throat, but probably did something else equally appalling, but that’s hidden from view.

Anyone who runs for office as a Democrat is filthy, vile scum, the only mystery is exactly why they are filthy, vile scum.

Although their ideaology is factor #1.

NoDonkey on February 8, 2010 at 10:03 AM

And what made most of the media ignore these allegations until after the primaries

It seems to me, that not only are the liberal msm’s hell bent on meeting their goals of a socialist agenda, but they’re all for it, even if it means placing violent individuals into office.

Where’s the outrage toward this man from NOW and other liberal groups? I guess they’d rather attack a woman, and her son, for choosing life! *shrugs*

capejasmine on February 8, 2010 at 10:04 AM

This is a non-story.

The real story is that D. Durbin is now managing Giannoulias’ campaign.

Even though Mark Kirk is bad on some issues, we need to support him. Illinois is a very pathetic state, and Kirk is about as good as we can hope for, for now.

Good questions. Particularly the question of where was the media. Wouldn’t it have also been handy to have some journalistic vetting BEFORE we got stuck with Obama.

Two words: The Outfit.
Ed, Giannoulias puts Obama closer to the inheritors of the Capone legacy than anyone else can right now… even Rezko. Remember, Giannoulias was a banker for at least one guy in the Outfit. Remember Obama’s currently-unkept promise to the Teamsters that he would lift the DOJ supervision of that former Outfit subsidiary? Watch for that.

Arthur Turner finished second.
Arthur Turner got almost 1/4 of the votes in a 6 way primary.
Arthur Turner got over 180,000 votes and lost by only 30,000.
Arthur Turner received 70,000 more votes than his nearest competitor.
Why hasn’t Arthur Turner already been named as the nominee?

Yeah, I don’t know why the person who was in second place doesn’t get to be the nominee.

I’m not a big Mayor Daley supporter but he nailed it when he said recently that it does not bode well for a democracy when the people’s votes get to be overturned by the political party when they decide they don’t like the outcome of a particular race.

Mayor Daley IS the problem with American Democracy. He should be locked up to prevent him from having any power over the lives of others.
