Super Bowl open thread; Update: Geaux Saints!
posted at 10:00 am on February 7, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
Today brings an end to the NFL season with the grandest spectacle in American sports, the Super Bowl. More than a billion people around the world will be watching, perhaps as much for the commercials and the spectacle as for the game itself. However, this year the game pits the best two teams of the 2009 season, both of which threatened to go unbeaten until late in the season, in tandem breaking a record for the longest that two teams went unbeaten in the regular season. As my friend King Banaian noted yesterday, it’s the first time since 1993 that the two #1 seeds in the playoffs have met in the Super Bowl, when the Dallas Cowboys beat the Buffalo Bills.
Which team of destiny will cross the finish line? Let’s look at the matchups:
- Overall offense – The Colts can score, and have a good balance between the passing and running games. However, the Saints have a more explosive offense, both with the pass and the run. New Orleans gets the edge here.
- QB – Drew Brees has done a great job this year, and has been a solid QB in the NFL for years. Peyton Manning has been in the Super Bowl before and has been the best in the league for several years. His experience and talent gives Indianapolis the edge at this position.
- Defense – New Orleans has a good defense, but not a great one. The Colts’ D has been mainly overlooked this season as people focused on Manning, but they turned in a stellar performance against the Ravens the week after Baltimore rolled up over 30 points against the Patriots. The bend-but-don’t-break defense of the Colts gives Indianapolis a big edge over New Orleans.
- Special teams – The Colts do a good job on special teams, but the Saints have Reggie Bush — and Bush can burn just about anyone on kick returns. If there’s a game-changing play on special teams, it’s most likely going to be the Saints making it.
So who will win? I think this will be a good game, perhaps even as exciting as last year’s classic between Pittsburgh and Arizona. I doubt that either team will get ahead of the other by much more than a TD at any point in the game. If it’s a low-scoring game, then the Colts win it with their tough defense. If it turns into a shootout, then the Saints will have the advantage, with their deep threats and wide-open offense.
It’s tough, but I have to go with defense and the Colts. I’ll pick them to win a 24-20 squeaker. I’ll probably be pulling for the Saints, though, to win in their first-ever championship game.
Update: Congratulations, New Orleans — what a great season, and what a great game!

Thank you!
I miss Bourbon Street and the French Quarter! I am from Pensacola, FL, on the Gulf Coast, and a little less than 3 hours away from Nawlins.
Will have to book a trip down there soon…miss the food especially. Great memories going there multiple times growing up.

If the Saints deserve the Super Bowl because of Katrina~- Then it would have been the year of 2007, when they started the March to the Playoffs. They lost to the Bears in the NFC championship game.
This win is Foe all the Fans of LA…….
Congrats to the Saints….

That onside kick was killer. Caldwell looked like a rookie coach out there, and the Colts had some key drops. And of course now we get the ‘ol “Manning isn’t all that great” garbage.
And now all the New Orleans Katrina crap. Great.

Well, dat devil learned that Boudreaux like da heat but don’t like da cold. He turned the tempurature down that ice started to form. Boudreaux started to shiver but had a big grin on his face.
The Devil den say “Boudreaux, why you smilin? I thought you hated the cold”.

This makes the Colts decision not to play all their games at full strength all the more horrid. Freeney was still hurt regardless, as was Powers, and what do they have to show for it? A SB loss. Awesome.

Wow…wish i could have seen the game live..apparently there’s no overage here in India.
I feel happier for Drew Brees than for the Saints.. his comeback (after Marty Schottenheimer almost ruined his career by playing him in a totally meaningless game and getting his throwing arm fractured) is simply improbable. He owes his orthapaedic surgeon and his rehab team quite a lot. But he probably owes a lot more to his own heart.
Was Brees the MVP? Big kudos to the Saints D which held up against Manning and made the decisive pick 6 as well.
But what does this mean for Manning ? The Sports Guy will probably invent a new level of losing and a new Manning face.. his hex on Manning and the Colts worked perfectly =)

Dire Straits on February 7, 2010 at 10:23 PM
I don’t know. All the talk leading up to the SB had been how they won all the games they tried to win anyway, so I’m not sure it would’ve made much difference. At least as far as I’m concerned. They played OK, but they made the killer mistakes at crucial times that they’d avoided all season.

very disappointed that the Chargers let him go. I think the Chargers would have won the SB with him.
@El_Terrible,
BLAME THAT on Marty Schottenheimer – he played him in that totally meaningless last game of the season (after the Chargers were already eliminated from playoff contention) and promptly got Brees’ throwing arm fractured. It also happened to be the last year of Brees’ contract with SD and pretty much every one knew that he was not coming back – the arm fracture made it impossible for SD to re-sign him.
The Chargers did not “let him go”. No team ever does that to a player of Drew’s caliber. They thought that he was finished and would never be a good player in the NFL again after injuring his throwing arm.
Which is why this SuperBowl victory makes it all the more sweet for Drew Brees – ofcourse its an incredible story for Nawlins.. but its just as incredible for Brees.
nagee76 on February 7, 2010 at 10:28 PM
Just be glad you did not have to endure Katie Couric interview Obie.
Dire Straits on February 7, 2010 at 10:29 PM
I want to put some finishing touches on Couric’s interview of Brees in the pre-game.
The school that he had the football field built for was a sorry sorry school in a great neighborhood, near his home. It became a charter school after Katrina and is most definitely completely merit based, including getting in. There is a waiting list now.
Pre-Katrina, it was one of those where the women in the neighborhood hid when “students” were coming or going due fear of sexual assault. Many would skip to burglarize the neighborhood and claim that they were in class. And the doors were locked from immediately after dismissal until just before the first morning classes due assault of staff.
Now it rivals the several great private schools nearby in scholastics.
Kermit on February 7, 2010 at 10:33 PM
